Ask The Experts #2

Q: When a mare has a foal, and then is sent to another farm to be bred for the next season, is the foal left back at the farm until the mare returns or does the foal accompany mom in the horse van to the stallions farm ? Is someone assigned to the foal to keep it calm while mom is being bred? Sally Wade Saginaw, MI A:Typically, as long as the stallion is local, the foal will be left at home while the mare is bred. They usually return within a one to two hour period, and someone in the barn will watch them closely while the mare is absent. In our breeding shed we will make concessions for mares that are travelling some distance to be bred and allow them to bring the foal with the mare. Q: Zenyatta has always been a big girl and has packed… Continue Reading

Zenyatta Confirmed 60 Days in Foal

Happy Friday! How did you spend Father’s Day? We went to Lane’s End to celebrate with Zenyatta, and that was just the start of an exciting week… 12Z is getting so big, and we just had a blast hanging out with him and his mom. Our next stop was California, where we stopped in to see Z’s little sister Eblouissante. We brought along Baby Z’s first halter, and Auntie Eblouissante got a kick out of it! And then the most exciting news of all came this morning: Zenyatta is officially 60 days in foal to Tapit! We also debuted our new column, Ask The Experts, earlier this week. Recently we invited all of you to submit questions about Zenyatta, her colt, and life at Lane’s End. Our inbox was flooded with hundreds of questions from all over the world. We are so touched by the number of people Zenyatta has… Continue Reading

Ask The Experts #1

Q: Hello! I know everyone will have horse related questions, so my question will be about the barn cats at Lane’s End. Does Zenny have a favorite cat friend? Kelly Mullin Allentown, PA A: Zenny does have a cat friend! This is Mr. Scraggles, who has been her buddy since she moved to the new barn with 12 Zenyatta. He’s pictured here cuddling up with Alys right outside of Z’s paddock. Fun facts about Mr. Scraggles: He’s the best mouser on the farm, but he doesn’t like to get his feet wet. He’s very social kitty and comes when he’s called. He is partial to a good tummy scratch. On cold days you will find him in the tack room snoozing on the barn laundry. Our Expert Alys Emson Client Management, Lane’s End Alys has been at Lane’s End for fourteen years. She has worked in every division of the… Continue Reading
