Diary Post #447

Hello, Yesterday, we had a very comfortable afternoon in Lexington and the temperatures were rather pleasant. Then last night at about 3 in the morning, a very heavy rain began. Fortunately, at that time, TASTY and I were nice and safe snuggled comfortably in our stalls in the foaling barn. My ‘foaling status’ is progressing in a very nice and relaxed manner since the latest report. As of this morning, per Matt, TASTY, is at the ‘one marshmallow size bag’ stage. This is where I was last week. It will be fascinating to monitor the progression we each make during the next several days. Many of you have asked if we would be together with our foals once they are born. From what we are hearing, that is the plan. On another note, I would like to send a HIGH HOOF to a dear friend who used to visit ME… Continue Reading

Diary Post #446

Happy Tuesday! Yes, it is just that….a very happy Tuesday! I am so pleased to report the findings from all of my evaluations yesterday. I am DOING GREAT! Per Mike Cline from Lane’s End, I AM DOING EVERYTHING JUST AS THEY WOULD HOPE! (Blush, Blush!) I am really beginning to ‘let down now’. This means my body is relaxing and recognizing the fact that the many changes required before foaling occurs are now gradually happening. My “bag” did get a bit bigger over the weekend. It is currently the size of the palm of one’s hand. From all reports and the many years of experience of my Lane’s End Team…I am still several days or so from actually foaling…but all of the proper stages they want to see are taking place in my body. We are at the stage where nature truly directs everything as to how quickly these stages… Continue Reading

My friend, Pirate Queen….has an update for us! Photo by John Shirreffs

Diary Post #445

Good Morning, Everyone! It was such a fabulous, yet rather quick weekend! I am constantly amazed at how fast the time is flying by now. It seems like BABY NEWS is definitely in the air here at the farm. I just received this message and wanted to share it with you. It’s from my dear friend, Pirate Queen. As you may remember, when I first arrived at Lane’s End she was one of my original paddock mates. Then Mike and Charles moved things around a bit….and TASTY and I became such dear friends in our own paddock. Often, so many of you ask about some of my friends here at the farm. Well, I am very pleased to announce that PIRATE QUEEN had a grey colt…this morning at 3:50 a.m… by QUALITY ROAD. This is her first foal…and the first crop of Quality Road foals…so this adds to the excitement!… Continue Reading

Tasty and I....relaxing in the sun! Photo by Sarah Campion

Diary Post #444

Happy Friday Dear Friends, I have always been one to enjoy an early afternoon nap! I was on a very definite schedule when I was in training at BARN 55. MY JOHN used to have the entire barn area be completely peaceful after our morning training hours and 10:30 a.m. breakfast. This way all of the horses could totally rest, relax, and nap. He would have the fans turned on so we would have lots of fresh air circulating and the entire environment was completely tranquil. This is a habit I have continued to enjoy since I’ve been at Lane’s End. I must say, I love my naps! When at Barn 55, this was the time MY JOHN would walk around and just observe us while we were resting! It was sweet to see him always ‘peeking in on ME’ as he walked around the shed row and made sure… Continue Reading

Tasty....we have lots to learn about 'babies'! Photo by Mathea Kelley

Diary Post #443

Good Morning, Tasty and I were recently visiting in the paddock and concluded we each have a great deal to learn about becoming a MOM . The entire process of having a foal and then raising it to become a healthy and talented race horse is rather interesting. Since it is the first foal for each of us, we decided it is something we really want to prepare for so we can do our very best! I’ve heard with humans, they have birthing and childcare classes plus all kinds of books and videos to prepare people to become parents. Since we are horses, TASTY and I tried to figure out how we could learn more about all of this process that would help us in ‘our world’. In our quest to do so, we asked our pals here at the farm for some advice. It just so happens that a… Continue Reading

It's ME...thinking! Photo by Sarah Campion

Diary Post #442

Hello Everyone, I can’t believe it is already the 22nd of February. The time is really going by so quickly. I am definitely getting to the final weeks of my pregnancy. I’ve gained just the right amount of weight and the ADORABLE BABY does move around a bit and even gives a little ‘kick’ now and then. This is all TOO CUTE! Rachel from California asked “How I would let my pals here at the farm know when I am ready to foal?” As I’ve mentioned in earlier Diary postings, I was put under ‘foal watch’ on February 1st. This is done so everyone at the farm is monitoring ME each day very closely to observe everything going on with my body. From what I am being told (as I have not done this before), my body will start giving signs as the big day gets closer. It is a… Continue Reading

Kari, you are in our hearts! Photo by John Shirreffs

Diary Post #441

Dear Friends, It has been such a touching weekend…but I must say in so many different ways. Life has a way of being like this. There were 2 birthdays I honored…My dear pal, Charles, here at the farm and my owner’s wonderful MOM, Jean. Then MY JOHN and Dottie attended their niece’s wedding celebration and it was all so special. On the horse front, BLACK CAVIAR won #19…. ANIMAL KINGDOM won his comeback race with style, and some very impressive 3 year olds celebrated victories around the country. All of this so much fun to watch and enjoy! Then, on our Zenyatta. com home front, our dear KARI BUSSELL, one of my most loving and endearing fans passed away on February 17th. Her daughter let all of us know by posting on the site….and so many have responded with love and heartfelt sympathy. I did meet KARI and would like… Continue Reading

I love looking at CLOUDS! Photo by John Shirreffs

Diary Post #440

Happy Friday! I’ve shared the clouds and sky Tasty and I see from our Lane’s End paddock with you on many occasions. At about 5 o’clock Wednesday, MY JOHN and Dottie were running an errand in Arcadia and they just had to take this photo. The FOOTHILLS looked as though one could literally touch them…and the trees on the mountaintop were so precisely outlined. The CLOUDS were equally amazing. It appeared as though they were hugging the mountains in a soft and gentle way. What an amazing sight! It is so special to take a moment and enjoy views like this and all of the beauty they offer. Thank you for the LOVELY COMMENTS about my life-size bronze that is going to be installed at Santa Anita this fall. I must say, I am truly excited about this. It is like I will still be with ALL of you each… Continue Reading

Sophie, this is the JOHN HENRY BRONZE created by Nina Kaiser! Photo by John Shirreffs

Dairy Post #439

Good Morning Dear Friends! I am absolutely elated this morning! I am so honored and thrilled to share the news with you that SANTA ANITA PARK, The Great Race Place, has commissioned Nina Kaiser to create a life-size bronze statue of ME. It is to be installed directly across from John Henry’s statue at the south rim of the Kingsbury Fountain. I will be located right there to GREET the fans as they enter the track through the main grandstand gates. I will be facing eastward and right by the path the horses take when they walk from the receiving barn to the paddock area directly before each race. I am SO EXCITED and SO DEEPLY, DEEPLY HONORED! Nina created this beautiful JOHN HENRY Statue (shown above) for Santa Anita….and now she is completing the finishing touches of ME…a LIFE-SIZE ME! Another thing that is so special about all of… Continue Reading

Diary Post #438

Good Morning, I do hope all of you had a wonderful day yesterday enjoying special moments, visits, and hugs with dear friends and loved ones. We certainly enjoyed our day here at Lane’s End. Everything was lovely! As many of you may know, MY TEAM absolutely adores all kinds of SPORTS. MY JOHN and Dottie are avid sports fans and have many teams in various sports they follow. In the many lessons we learn in life, “sports” can often be a great teacher! For one N.Y. KNICKS Basketball player, yesterday was truly a very special day! JEREMY LIN clinched the WIN last night for the KNICKS with his final shot….a 3 pointer…in the last few seconds of the game. Jeremy’s story is a fabulous one. He is Harvard-educated, is passionate about Basketball, and has exhibited a work ethic in his sport that illustrates a high level of perseverance. HE NEVER… Continue Reading
