Diary Post #456

He's resting! Isn't he TOO CUTE! Photo by Matt Martinez

Happy Monday to All!

It has truly been a very eventful few days. My foal and I are adjusting beautifully to our life together. He is quite smart, inquisitive, and charming ….if I say so myself. (Blush, Blush) I’m hearing others making these same statements about him…so I guess you could say I am in complete agreement with them!

Weather permitting, we spend time outdoors in the paddock together….and then we return to the barn for our evening’s rest. I am pleased to report that he is doing everything perfectly…just as a MOM would hope for a foal who is only a few days old.

I must say, I am having the most fabulous time being a MOM and just watching him…sleep, eat, play, and snuggle up to ME. It is an absolute JOY….and I could not be happier.

Just as with human babies, there is paperwork to be completed upon the birth of a foal. All of the proper information must be submitted to the Jockey Club for his JOCKEY CLUB PAPERS to be issued. These papers are a thoroughbred’s version of a human’s BIRTH CERTIFICATE.

Martha at Lane’s End is preparing his LIVE FOAL report this morning. Later after this information is processed, blood work will be provided and this will be used to properly verify he is definitely MY FOAL SIRED BY BERNARDINI. I.D. photos will be taken and submitted to the Horse Identification Department noting every single aspect of his body…color, white star, any other white hairs, or markings. All of these details are noted in a very explicit format. Such steps are completed with each foal that is born. ALL thoroughbreds are specifically identified and parentage qualified with the goal of keeping the integrity of our sport always operating at the highest levels.

You may remember my HORSE IDENTIFICATION PHOTO. I found it again for you. I was just a few months old at the time it was taken. Who ever thought it would be so much FUN to look at several years later.

Hmmmm! What do you think? Does he take after ME?

When all of these requirements are completed and verified, the Jockey Club will formally issue his CERTIFICATE OF FOAL REGISTRATION. This will follow my adorable little guy, just as a birth certificate does a human, throughout his life…when he races, travels, or whatever else he may do!

I also want to tell you that I checked in on TASTY this morning. She is ‘happily in foal’…and from all indications it appears she still has a few days to wait before she gives birth! I’m wishing her all the best! While he’s napping, I think I’ll send her a few ‘foaling pointers’….now that I’m such a PRO and have a bit of experience in this area!

Please enjoy your week!

With Love,
Hugs to All~ (I’m still in AWE of this entire MOM experience!)
Z….and her BABY! (How cute is that to say!)

This is SO SWEET!!

I just got the memo and the date is all set! SANTA ANITA is having LOS ANGELES’ LARGEST BABY SHOWER FOR ME and MY BABY this Saturday. How special is this!

The life-size painting of ME, THE QUEEN’S DANCE, which we unveiled during My Breeders’ Cup Party last year at Churchill Downs, is going to be on display. Jaime Corum, the artist who created the piece, and some members of my TEAM, will also be there to visit with fans.

The beautiful part of this is that MY SHOWER will honor some of the charities I have worked with during my career! My BABY and I are so fortunate, thus, it is truly my privilege to assist others who may need some help whenever I can!

I’m beginning to realize the ‘teaching part’ of being a MOM starts the minute the baby is born! Thank you for helping ME to illustrate to him the ‘gift of giving to others…comes in so many ways’.

  1. “Please enjoy your week” Is Auntie Dottie and Uncle John coming to visit lovely momma and cutie pie baby? Mmmm … guess we’ll know if no post tomorrow …. just saying ….

  2. Dear Queen Z. Yup your gorgeous foal looks like you as a baby. We are all so excited, we just are going nuts with happiness for you and your baby.

Please tell Tasty that we are anticipating her giving birth. We look forward to seeing if she foals a colt or a filly.

    Love you always.

  3. Goodnight Star Prince and his Queen Momma – hope some more photos or videos coming soon … I know it is important to get the ‘MOM’ thing right, so take your time, but does it really bother mother mares all that much if videos or photos are taken very quietly? Is it too much out of routine for first time momma mares and their little ones even though Zenny is used to it? Anyone know?

    1. I think it depends on the mare. Some mares are very touchy when they have a foal on them. Zenyatta evidently is not. Anyway, pics and video are a normal part of her routine. And the boy probably thinks it’s normal already. After all, he has spent his short life in the spotlight.

  4. Hi Zenny, that pic is too cute! Your foal is beautiful. I’m so happy that you are both doing well. Thanks for the update on Tasty. We love her too!
    Love to all,

  5. ♥ Goodnight My Queen and Baby Prince

I did catch up reading on here… see you tomorrow! Pleasant dreams! xoxoxo

    Love Always and Forever ♥
    Judy G

  6. Goodnight, sleep tight and pleasant dreams, dear Z and Z Baby! Love, hugs and kisses!

Sleep well, Tasty — sweet dreams to you, too! Your little one will soon arrive. Wishing you a smooth delivery with both you and the foal healthy. Love and hugs!

  7. Dear Zenny & LittleGuy & Team-Z,
Your sweet little Foal is so precious, and you look like the most amazing Mamma,
ever !! I’m so happy for you all. Give my BEST WISHES to TT, for a wonderful
foaling experience … just like you had. It will be great to see you and TT in your
    paddock, with your Newborns !!
Take care and keep us posted. Hugs to all. Fondly, OraJean

  8. With all the droves of fans that Zenyatta has and has had and now with the birth of the little prince, Lane’s End will never be able to have a ‘come visit with Zenyatta Day” like they had for Rachel Alexnadra. Zenyatta’s star status and now little prince’s star status tells me LE wouldn’t try to take that on. She is just too high profile.

  9. Hi, Momma Z!

Very glad to read that you and son are doing well!!! :)

I love the photos of the two of you and have one of the pics as my desktop, too. The video of your son’s birth produced by HRTV was really special.

I was looking at pictures of your mom, Vertigineux, this morning, Momma Z, and Baby Z sure does favor her, but he definitely has your ears and long legs!! ;) I look forward to seeing little guy grow up into a champion like his parents; he has very big hooves to fill and wishing him only the Best!!

Your baby shower sounds like a blast and for a very great cause!

How’s Tasty? Did you give her some pointers? Won’t be long before we will see pics of you and Tasty with the little ones.

When will a name be decided upon for Baby Z?

    Take care, and love you!!

  10. Great News, Go to Lane’s Ends FB page and see the pictures they have added of Tasty Temptation when she was racing. She is owned by Bill Farish of Lane’s End Farm.

    1. Thanks! We just saw them…it’s great knowing TT is a huge part of the Farish family.

  11. Zenny, how much LOVE is this on this site. Incredible. You BOTH ARE so special. To the Mosses, Dottie and all we thank you for sharing Zen with us.

  12. Ms Zenyatta and Our Prince, Top of the Morning to the both of you. I have such excitment every morning as I know there will be a new picture of you Royal Beauties. Have a wonderful day, exploring and those sweet kisses….I love you sooooo..Lisag

  13. Good Morning All, I hope everyone has a Great Day!! @Matt, i just love this photo!!
It is raining here in MA this morning, I hope you have better weather in KY so you can
be outside most of the day! The Prince is so Cute!! HUGS TO ALL

  14. Good morning, ZEE & Wee(one), & Tee(still hanging low)

I forgot to wish your charity effort well, last night.

If athg your video w Wee literally screams it to the high heavens you and your kind and all the other beings, deserve nthg but respect & good will.

Have a good romp day w Wee

  15. Many are wondering what stallion Zenyatta will go to this year. Often when a mare producing what the farm mgr and owners consider a spectacular foal they repeat going back to the same stallion. So we’ll see soon enough who they go to, I think Hard Spun or Giant’s Causeway will be in the mix.

    1. Someone put on here I think that they spoke with Dottie at Santa Anita this weekend and she said the papers have already been signed on who the next stallion will be but they were not ready to announce it yet but it should be by the end of the month. She’ll probably be rebred again in April.

  16. Dear Zenny and Baby Z. If I had a dollar for each time you made me smile I would be a millionaire. Love to you Mama, Baby Prince and Tasty too. Tasty hope to see you and your foal soon. Love to you all.

There was quite a disturbing article in the KANSAS CITY STAR, Sunday, March 11 !!
It was titled, “TOWN PROTESTS IDEA OF A HORSE SLAUGHTER PLANT” A Belgian Co, Chevideco has joined with a Wyoming co, Unified Equine, to start scouting for new places to set up shop! After all 3 plants in the US were shut down, CONGRESS,has put back the funding for these plants to operate!! They have decided that the little Missouri town , Mountain Grove, population 4,500, would be a good place to set up a slaughter house! A meeting was held at the Mt Grove Senior Center, which was packed, every seat taken & to the point that the fire marshall said no more people. An attorney, a former prosecutor, named Cynthia MacPherson, unleashed a scathing attack on Chevideco & its Texas slaughter plant. The backers told Mt Grove, that “It’s more humane to kill animals for meat, than to let them die of neglect” Another meeting is scheduled for 3:30pm Monday at the Wright County Livestock Auction in Mountain Grove. Z’STERS, what can we do?? This must be stopped before they take over everywhere!!!!!

    1. I used to live near Kansas City and I can’t believe that the good people of Missouri would allow this. Of course, I can’t say the same for the politicians.

  18. Good morning, Zee and Wee! I hope you have a simply lovely day today. All my best wishes and prayers are with Tasty as her time nears.

    1. Zee and Wee – love it!!

  19. Can’t wait until Saturday and the baby shower! The weather forecast says rain and cold but that won’t dampen our spirits! That’s why they make raincoats and umbrella’s!
I understand you will soon be getting a “special” visit from a good friend! Can’t wait to hear about it! ;-)
Have a wonderful day Zenyatta and little Prince! xoxo

    1. Did you want to let the rest of us in on the “special visit”?

    2. Like, yeah, what Sandy said….Is it Her Dottie and Her John and Her Mario?

    3. wink wink :-) ;-)

    4. It is Mikey Smith!!!!

  20. Love the picture, he is so cute. Can’t wait to see him moving around with you in the pasture. Prayers to you both and to Tasty.

  21. Sweet lovely MOM, I can tell this beautiful colt is YOURS for sure!! Hope this posts from the FLA. library. I have been so unsuccessful I could just CRY!! The very 1st picture on 454 was sooo precious and I captioned it THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL.
Z, you & baby colt took my breath away!! I’ll keep this short, but know, each & every day you are forever Gentle On My Mind.
kisses on each of your soft noses, Auntie Sally

  22. Wow!!! It posted. I will be making up a lot of time searching for pictures of you Z and your colt when I return from FLA. Thank you Ann (Jerry), I knew you would be there prior to Z’s foaling!!! I felt all would be OK when I saw Ann. Dottie & John, I am forever grateful for all you do. love to all & hugs
    Auntie Sally

A@Margaret (N) I finally could get on, I am not sure if you will now get this. I’ll be at the Ocala yearling sales the 14th with my Zenyatta pink-leather friendship braclet on. Forgot my Z dumpling tag. Hope to meet up with you.

HI all!!! I miss not being able to be a closer part of Z, Z’sters. But, I think of you often.

  23. Dear Zenyatta. Good morning, sunshine!!! I missed talking with you yesterday. My goodness you have been getting so many wonderful, heartfelt messages, isn’t that absolutely fantastic!!! I’m still trying to get caught up on them. Your little prince has fulfilled so many dreams and created new ones all at the same time. How we love him and you beautiful one!!! The first time I saw you Zenyatta, it was love at first site and it has been the same with your little boy. You are both such a blessing to us all. I keep looking at all the pictures and of course have watched the video over and over. They melt my heart. Jerry and Ann are such kind and caring individuals. They are fantastic!! What a gift you are to each other and to all of us. They just make you want to cry when expressing the joy that you and your little one give them. We all agree he is the most beautiful baby ever!!! The photo of the two of you sleeping is wonderful. Thank you, Matt! You are the best mother ever, Zennie!! Thank you and Dottie for explaining all about the Jockey Club Papers, I think your picture as a little is just too cute! I am so glad to hear that Tasty is doing fine and will soon have her own baby to adore. Wishing her a safe deliver and looking forward to pictures of the two of them also. The Baby Shower at Santa Anita sounds like too much fun!! Well back to work now. Much love and sweet dreams to you and baby boy. Hugs and kisses. XXXOOO

  24. Love that photo also!! Have any of you noticed that Zenyatt’s foal photo almost makes her look like a dark chestnut, and little Z is darker. I think he is going to be a seal color, dark except around the face and esp. the muzzle. He does have her ears, but I can also see Bernadini in there as well. A perfect combo. The Seattle Slew line has a certain “look” to their faces, and that look gets passed down. I’ve got a Slew girl and he looks like him so much in the face. There is no doubt that those ears come from big Z!!!! So adorable. I always loved the look of a little foal with the halter on. I think I cried more putting that on the foal than when the foal came out (my mare forgot to lay DOWN to have the foal; she had her standing up!) Luckily all was ok.
I hope they give Zenyatta some time off before breeding her so she can enjoy the baby and then bein a horse again for awhile. JMHO Keep the lovely photos coming!! thanks

  25. Wish I could listen to “Horse Talk “but have to work……I am looking forward to seeing you both in the grass …you teaching and the Prince doing what he wants any way. You know boys are like that Zen. Love ya Momma Z

    1. I am going to try to sneak it in. It should be 12:00 Texas time, right? I will be at lunch, come up here and see what happens.

  26. Zenyatta, how time flies. Your colt will turn 5 days old tonight. I am anxious to hear what the Lanes End staff have to say about your foaling in the Bloodhorse interview. HAVE TO SEND A BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TIZNOW!! Tiznow is 15 years old today. I try to look in on him every day on the Winstar Stablemates CAM. I wish I could see you more often Zenyatta. Have a wonderful day with your Prince.

    1. O, HappyBirthday, TizNow….such a handsome man, I have a crush on him.

  27. @Ann, posted Moondance and Dancin In The Moonlight here. Suzanne G (IL) looked up Moondancer at the Jockey Club…one of our favorite names is already taken…2008..I am still hung up on ‘Le Prince”. Thanks, Suzanne G for the info. Lisag

And they’re off: Le Prince is coming around the far turn from the outside, oh my goodness, this is unbelieveable. (Silence in the stands, the only sound is the hooves of all the horses). It is Le Prince by 20 Furlongs, Jesse 2nd.

  28. Can’t stop watching the Blood Horse TVG video and smile and weep with joy every time. The little (not so little at 130 lbs but Zenny is so big makes him look so tiny and can fit under her belly for now) guy is so adorable and that wonderful star on his forehead and his big, fuzzy ears just blow me away!
I know we have been playing the name game for fun and the Moss’s will choose the perfect name for him as his personality emerges but I remember year’s ago Herb Alpert and the TJ Brass recorded an instrumental called “RISE” and I loved it and played it all the time. Just a thought because of the Alpert/Moss connection.
Hope the sun is shining bright today on Zenny & her Prince in their Old Kentucky Home.
Hugs & nose kisses to them both.
Hope all is going well for Tasty. I keep checking the Lane’s End 2012 Foals site and nothing yet.

  29. CIGAR ALERT…no.coat

    1. I missed him AGAIN : (
