SANTA ANITA TO HOST ZENYATTA BABY SHOWER;
‘IT’S A BOY’ POSTER FREE TO ALL THIS SATURDAY,
‘TEAM ZENYATTA’ AVAILABLE FOR AUTOGRAPH SESSION
Santa Anita Park will proudly host an equine baby shower in honor of the great Zenyatta’s newly arrived foal this Saturday, March 17. All on-track attendees will receive one “It’s a Boy” poster, free with their paid admission and will have an opportunity to meet “Team Zenyatta” in an autograph session prior to the races.
“The entire racing world is buzzing about Zenyatta’s new colt, who was born in Kentucky last Thursday night (March 8),” said Chris Quinn, Santa Anita’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Zenyatta is easily the most popular horse of the past 25 to 30 years and people are clamoring to see and learn more about her new baby.
“We want to thank Jerry and Ann Moss and the entire Zenyatta team for helping us to make this happen and we look forward to following the progress of Zenyatta’s first foal in the weeks and months ahead. I think all of us here at Santa Anita are hopeful that someday, we’ll get to see this precious horse race here in Southern California.”
“The Queen’s Dance,” a life-size painting of Zenyatta on post parade, will also be on display at Santa Anita on Saturday. This magnificent work of art, first unveiled during Breeders’ Cup week this past November at Churchill Downs, was created by Jaime Corum (whose posters and original artwork will be available at the gift shop this weekend).
Corum, along with members of the Zenyatta team, will be on hand Saturday and will participate in the Zenyatta autograph session which will take place from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Santa Anita’s East Paddock Gardens area.
Several charities, including CANTER of California Old Friends, Race for Education and EAGALA, which have been involved with Zenyatta throughout her legendary racing and now maternal career, will be represented at Saturday’s event.
First post time on Saturday is 12:30 p.m., with the Grade I Santa Margarita Stakes (won by Zenyatta in 2010) and the Irish Obrien Stakes headlining a festive St. Patrick’s Day card.
Be sure to check back soon for the new “It’s a Boy” photo gallery posted in the “photos” section of zenyatta.com

Hello to everyone….so glad to learn of the very wet, yet joyful experiences of the baby shower yesterday. The wet weather kept many people away ( very low attendance for a Saturday)–I, too, had no desire to be out. I HAVE to go to work–anything else is my choice and I am a fraidy cat even as a passenger. When we lived in Wisconsin for three years, I turned over the car keys to Rod for six months. BUT, I digress. I am so happy for those who did brave the elements and can tell us their stories. I saw only a brief glimpse of the signing on HRTV, and later Gary Stevens in his Irish costume. LOL. ANYWAY, thanks JAG, Karen and Ro for your feedback. Sounds like what a Z get together should be–fun! (Before my knee issues, I used to LOVE standing in any race track line talking horses…even waiting to get in was a lot of fun chatter.) We have met the nicest people at the track and now with our QUEEN-and her Prince- we have met even more. And yes, here we all are. still. And before I forget, I just love those photos!
@Sierra…I am enjoying your stories…
@Ashton: thank you so much for continuing to be here and for your Moma’s video.
@Shari Voltz, I am so very sorry to learn of the devastating loss of your student. I don’t know what else to add.
Happy Sunday and high hooves to all Dumplings!!! :) :) :) :)

Dear Anne from Paramount:
Great to hear from you. Hugs, JB

Dear Anne,
So happy to hear from you.

Dear Ashton:
Thanks for the info on Sarbonne. Hugs, JB
March 18, 2012 at 12:55 pm
I’m just now catching up from last night (thunderstorms on and off, and I learned from a friend’s dreadful experience – surge protector or not, if lightening hits the house, everything electrical is gone so I just unplug).
It seems like the Dumplings in attendance yesterday survived the deluge. I looked at a couple of the races on calracing.com and couldn’t believe how wet it was. Glad to hear the joyful accounts of those who were there.
Not sure if everyone has made it over here to the News posts yet and have no idea how to contact some of our friends – has anybody “seen” LauraJ (Cincinnati)??
@Shari V – I’m so sorry about your student. That is just dreadful, and I imagine it is more than scary for some of the children who might be afraid that something like that could happen to them. Thoughts are with you as you grieve and help the children deal with this.
@Dawn Conrad – just wondering where you saw pictures of the Zenny baby shower? I looked on her FB page and don’t see any – can’t think where else to look.
@Sierra – hope you’re feeling better today – am enjoying your stories – will be awaiting the following installments :-)
March 18, 2012 at 1:18 pm
I am felling a lot better today thanks! Cold medicine really does wonders. Glad to hear that you are enjoying the stories.

Sandy,
CANTER California posted some on their FB page.

Thanks, Ashton, I was wondering where the pics were, too.

Hi again Ashton. I wanted you to have this link to the latest on THE VAULT, dedicated to your Moma:

Bob Ehalt on NTRA wrote an article yesterday titled THE RETURN OF THE QUEEN. The problem is that the article is about Havre De Grace’s return to the track. He asks for comments on where all she should race this season and the only comments that he is getting is that there is and always will be one Queen and that is Zenyatta! It gave me a good laugh when I read all comments.
Here is the link if anyone is interested.

I guess he should qualify himself as 2012 Racing Queen, HDG.
It really is fun to have her come back this year. Curlin
Was the last HOY to return to the Track and win
HOY again.
March 18, 2012 at 2:21 pm
Sign. You are right that Curlin was the last horse to return to racing and win HOY again, but there were others in the past such as Affirmed, Secretariat, Forego, Cigar and JAG’s beloved, John Henry, who also won HOY more than once.
I agree that The Queen is Zenyatta. Good luck to HDG in her career this year. It is always possible that HDG can win again. She is a very talented horse.
March 18, 2012 at 3:08 pm
Dear Max,
I think if HDG had Zenny or RA to contend with
It would be a no brainer. She is a talented mare
For her time, has a cute little cocky I am special
And beautiful attitude that I love and owner and
Team who really love her. That is so nice since we
we don’t have a Zenny, RA, Curlin, Secretariat etcc
It is just so nice to have her come back. Too bad no
Sturdy talented males that are champion’s at three
And so sad about Animal Kingdom. The best surgical
Repair may not allow him to race again with the pelvis
fracture. He legs are off balance and caused his pelvis
To fx.
I thought there were others who were two to three
Time HOY, thanks for looking up or recalling all
Of the others.
March 18, 2012 at 4:56 pm
love remembering all these old greats. let’s not forget kelso who was hoy five times, i think.
March 18, 2012 at 2:54 pm
Thanks, Carol. I do think it is funny, that Bob Ehalt got SUCH a storm of protest, and that he “didn’t see that one coming”. I would never call any horse except Zenyatta the Queen. But I also wouldn’t yell at Bob for such a mistake, I would just correct it. Since Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in the past has had her horses at Lane’s End, I have still been wondering if “The Queen” will ever meet “The Queen”.
March 18, 2012 at 3:36 pm
Wouldn’t that be something. I love both Queens….
March 18, 2012 at 1:20 pm
Well it looks like no story today I have tons of homework to catch up on from yesterday and Friday. But Monday I should have the next chapter. Sorry everyone but I just have way too much homework. Plus science fair is coming up.
March 18, 2012 at 7:36 pm
No worries, Sierra. We will patiently wait for the next installment. I am working full-time and taking online college classes, so I can sympathize with not having time to write “for fun”!
March 18, 2012 at 1:29 pm
Here is a link to the only race which was ever lost by the great English race horse, Brigadier Gerard.
The winner was Roberto, who is Z’s grand daddy through her dam line. Check out how much Roberto runs and looks like Z , especially those ears at the end of the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNsATgJA50g&feature=youtube_gdata_player
March 18, 2012 at 1:41 pm
Another great link Max, thanks
For finding a bit of wonderful history.
March 18, 2012 at 2:21 pm
Brigadier Gerard — such a GREAT horse! Thanks so much for this, Max.
March 18, 2012 at 2:31 pm
Sign and Abigail. You are most welcome. It is fun to look to Z’s history as we wait for more news of Z and 12Z. Also still pacing for some good foal news of TT.
It is wonderful how much Z’s maternal granddaddy looked like her. Roberto ran the race of his life to win against one of the all time greats in Brigadier Gerard. His regular jockey, Lester Piggott, decided to leave him for a ride on another horse. Roberto therefore had an American jockey who had never before raced at that track. Roberto ran the race of his life and set a track record. He was brilliant in that race and obviously passed on that brilliance to his illustrious grand daughter.
March 18, 2012 at 2:58 pm
Oh yes Max. Was Angel Cordero the jockey on
Roberto? Also, thought Zenny got her ears from
Kris S, she sure does run like Roberto, that very long
Distance covering stride.
I so much love to ride long strided horses. They
Cover so much ground, it makes you feel awesome/euphoric
When you pass everyone by standing still.
March 18, 2012 at 3:55 pm
Sign. The jockey was Braulio Baeza. He also rode Foolish Pleasure in the 1975 match race which resulted in the tragic death of the beautiful Ruffian. That terrible loss is reason enough for an end to match races.
Kris S is a son of Roberto. Those famous Z ears however may go back as far as Man o’ War in the pedigree.
March 18, 2012 at 5:54 pm
My counting skills are absolutely shot from pacing for first for Z and now for Tasty. I have to get some sleep. Tasty, that is a clue for you to get things done whenever you can.
Roberto is Z’s great grandfather on her dam line. He is grandfather to Vertigineux. Kris S is Z’s grandfather.
March 18, 2012 at 6:34 pm
Dear Max:
Thanks for that interesting post. Great photos of some of Z’s ancester. Look at the photo of Roberto. Guess that’s where Z got her white blaze. Kris S and Roberto have those wonderful ears too. Hugs, JB

Dear Max:
Great video of Roberto. Thanks. Hugs, JB
March 18, 2012 at 7:24 pm
Judy. This is the best. Those photos of Z’s family are fabulous as there are so many fine looking horses in her pedigree. It looks like the ears go back generations. Bernie also have good ears.
March 18, 2012 at 1:59 pm
My dear Z fans, I want to let you know that I enjoy all your post very much. I did not replay because am still very upset from the closing of the dairy. Without knowing, how our adorable Zenyatta and her baby are doing has been very hard for me. I feel that some one dropped a bucket of cold water on top of my head. I only hope she is doing okay, and TT is okay. I miss you very much my adorable Zenyatta, Ingrid.
March 18, 2012 at 2:55 pm
Dear Ingrid,
So good to hear from you.
Please do keep posting.
Hugs
March 19, 2012 at 10:38 am
Dear Signofthetime, yes I will thank you hugs, Ingrid
March 18, 2012 at 6:13 pm
Dear Ingrid:
Please let us hear from you often. I think we will be getting info on TT, updates and photos on Z and the little guy from time to time and we can keep in touch with each other here. Love and Hugs, JB
March 19, 2012 at 10:42 am
Dear Judy B, yes I will thank you pace… pace… for TT, hugs Ingrid.

Hi there Zenny, Baby 12-Z, Tasty (c’mon there, girl!), Dottie, Team Z & beloved Zen-sters:
I’m sorry to take so long to get back into “the swing of things” here but AM BUSTING OUT OF MY BUTTONS TO SEE ALL OF YOU POSTING!!!!! Now I feel we’ve got our Z Family back & I’m just thrilled! Hopefully, the CHAT ROOM will also give us new territory to explore…..kinda neat, really. It’s like we’re getting our own LADIES LOUNGE as per the lounge Team Z donated in California! Too bad there’s no way to decorate a chat room…..I see Zenny posters and photos…..lots of greeny greens and pinks…..Mike’s goggles from BC 2009…..a few of Zenny’s cooler blankets……YUP! I would be UP to decorate our forthcoming CHAT ROOM, that’s for sure.
I promise I’ll be a regular from here on, though. For the Zenster who asked about Baby Shower photos, here’s the link to a friend of mine’s SmugMug site & the photos she took. Donna Powell is an amazing photographer & a longtime Zenny-phile. The second link is to her photo gallery where you’ll see “many of Zenny” — scroll down to BC Classic and in & below there are her Zenny photos. I’ve bought prints from Donna for my own collection. She really captures Zenyatta at work & at play. (PS: Her prints are very reasonably priced, if anyone is interested.) ENJOY!

Abigail, thanks so much for the link to those pictures! It makes such a difference, to almost feeling like being there, minus the storm and the waits.
March 18, 2012 at 4:00 pm
Abigail, thank you so much for the link. I’m an artist too but, wow, I could never do a painting like that of the Queen’s Dance. Do you know what the attendance was?
March 18, 2012 at 3:09 pm
So where is the chat room???
Did I miss something???
March 18, 2012 at 3:29 pm
Not here yet…..I think they are calling it “Forum”
March 18, 2012 at 3:16 pm
Thanks for the link, Abigail. Great photos!
Sandy
March 18, 2012 at 3:28 pm
@ASHTON–your comments have made my day. We have so much in common. I am an only child, and we have an only child (daughter). I will tell you this: our Coach Kim did not want to be in the same region with the Lady Vols because she loves Pat Summitt so much. She was one of her mentors, and they are still very close.
@SHARI VOLTZ–be assured you will be in many of our thoughts and prayers tomorrow as you face this most difficult task. Your love for “our” Zenyatta will bind you closer to those students.
@SIERRA–How I wish I had had students as dedicated as you are! You go, girl! I would very much like to see your story and poems put on a permanent blog or site, so that I could print them for my notebook. Keep practicing your talent. One day you might be another Laura Hillenbrand.
March 18, 2012 at 4:24 pm
abigail – thanks so much for the link to the pictures! they are beautiful. while i’m at it, i want to congratulate you on the success of the vault. i remember when you began it, and have tried to keep up with reading each one. it is really a joy to read and seems as though it is a labor of love for you. well done!
March 18, 2012 at 4:24 pm
Abigail, thanks also for the link to Donna Powell’s photos. She has a huge set from Zenyatta’s Appreciation Day! I was there, and took photos, but there was a problem with my film, and they were lost. So all I had was my own memories. With her photos, I could see people in the crowds around the paddock that I recognized, and of course Team Z members everywhere, and I spotted Nina Kaiser in several pics, out on the track taking photos, too.
March 18, 2012 at 6:10 pm
Dear Abigail:
Thank you so much to the links. It gives us a visual of what it was like to be there, green water fountain and all. Hugs, JB
March 18, 2012 at 7:38 pm
If we are lucky, maybe the new forum will allow us to post photos as well as just text and links. Then we can “decorate” our virtual Lounge :)
March 18, 2012 at 3:18 pm
Hi Z’sters! I am finally dried out enough from yesterday to give you a brief rundown on the Baby Downpour, er, I mean Baby Shower ….
Like JAG and the other Dumplings who braved the river-like roads and freeways of So. CA to get there, I drove my trusty car on the 210 to get to Arcadia, all the while wondering why I hadn’t purchased an amphibious vehicle instead. I got there safely, but on the way discovered exactly what is meant by “hydroplaning”.
In the parking lot at Santa Anita, I waded through puddles and what I can only describe as flowing streams to get into the park. Once inside the gates, I saw signs pointing the way to the Zenyatta poster signing. Passing the festive fountain spraying green water, and blowing a kiss to the statue of John Henry, I slip and slided up the steps into the building, feeling a bit numb with cold and very wet.
The sight that greeted me was so warming and cheering I immediately forgot the cold wet journey to get there. There in front of me was a long, long line of the happiest, warmest, friendliest people I could imagine. Yes, they were a bit damp, but all looked glad to be there and all were visiting with each other and seemed to be in agreement that Z fans will do anything for the Queen!
The ravishingly beautiful painting by Jaime Corum was hanging on the wall above the table where Jaime Corum, John Shirreffs, Dottie Ingordo Shirreffs, and Mike Smith were tirelessly and happily signing autographs on the adorable posters. There were a lot of pictures being snapped., and I have to say that the subjects looked fabulous!. Mike looked particularly dapper in his porkie hat….
Many faces looked familiar to me, and it was great to see JAG, Karen Gogue, and Raylene. The lovely ladies of Canter had a table set up and were giving away literature, stickers, and beautiful calendars.
Any of you who have been to Santa Anita know that they have fantastic carved sandwiches. My friends and I had hot corned beef on rye sandwiches and toasted little 12 Zenyatta with lemonade!
We went outside and stood at the rail next to the starting gate to watch the horses sloshing to the finish line. Horses and jockeys were covered in mud and looked ready for hot showers! The San Gabriel Mountains were shrouded with rain clouds in the distance.
It was indeed a day for a Shower, and as I headed home, a rainbow appeared. I like to think it was a good omen. A sign that good things are in store for Z and her precious colt.
The perfect end to a wonderful day!
March 18, 2012 at 4:18 pm
deborah – thanks for such a great report of your day at the baby shower ! i’m on the east coast so couldn’t be there. your description is the next best thing!
March 18, 2012 at 8:17 pm
You’re welcome, Nancy! Wish you could have been there too.
March 18, 2012 at 4:39 pm
Deborah, Thanks for your detailed account, I’m glad you all had so much fun, in spite of the weather trying to drown you all out.
March 18, 2012 at 8:20 pm
You’re welcome, Vicki! Hope to meet you at SA or HP one day.
March 18, 2012 at 4:46 pm

Thanks, Karen! Loved meeting you in person too :)
March 18, 2012 at 4:53 pm
Deborah,
Thanks for sharing your day with us! I didn’t mind missing the rain part, but I sure would have loved to be there too. Your description allows me to “envision” at least some of it.
Sandy
March 18, 2012 at 8:23 pm
Thank you Sandy! Wish you could have been there too :)
March 18, 2012 at 5:54 pm
@ DEB
I’m sorry I didn’t get to talk to you much yesterday !!
I came in totally soaked – jeans wet to the core. Socks and shoes soggy, soggy, soggy! The water hit my face as if I were standing in my own shower (pun intended)! A little body wash and shampoo – please! LOL
BUT, I my Z friends drove to Arcadia from a further distance than I… we did it for ZENYATTA! We are the “die-hards” who took a risk driving the horrific freeways – ALL FOR TEAM ZENYATTA and ZEN’s BABY SHOWER! Personally, I think it was a “test” for us Dumplings – who would go to the end of the earth for OUR QUEEN – we did!! :o)
BTW the sun has been out all day today! Hummm I wonder if my above comment is true after all LOL
There was a rainbow at the end of the day! My signed “It’s a Boy” poster. Seeing the biggest grin on John Shirreffs ♥ face all day long! Seeing Dottie ♥ looking “too cute”. And Mikey – well, Mikey just being Mikey ♥ adorable!!
I asked Dottie if she and John were the God Parents and she said “yes”. I proudly said, “I’m her Auntie” and Dottie said “yes you are!” :-) They plan to visit Prince in the Springtime – perhaps April (sales)
@ Ms. Rumor Mill – if you had seen the storm we got, you’d understand WHY Ann and Jerry did not make it to the signing. Disappointed, yes! Forgiving, yes!
Auntie Judy (grateful for Team Zen and their continued generousity!) ♥
March 18, 2012 at 8:32 pm
LOL, Auntie JAG! It is always good to see you even briefly and totally soaked to the bone :)
March 19, 2012 at 7:51 am
Wow, Judy – sounds like something torrential happened on Sat. But you are such a brave and true Z-ster. I think you represent the spirit of all of us who would have been there if our circumstances permitted. thanks
March 19, 2012 at 10:16 am
Dear JAG:
That’s love. Hugs, JB
March 18, 2012 at 6:04 pm
Dear Deborah:
Thank you for sharing your day at Santa Anita yesterday with us. Like the idea of the rainbow being a good omen for Z and her new son. Hugs, JB
March 18, 2012 at 8:34 pm
You’re very welcome, Judy! Hugs to you, too :)
March 18, 2012 at 7:18 pm
Deborah- I feel like I was there! Thank you!
March 18, 2012 at 8:36 pm
You’re welcome, Susan! I know you were there in spirit :)
March 18, 2012 at 7:41 pm
I saw the rainbow on my way home, too. I joked to my sister that since Zenyatta is so far away now, her powers to control the weather got delayed :)
March 18, 2012 at 8:38 pm
LOL, Julie! It sounds like your fundraiser went well, too, in spite of the change of location due to the weather :)
March 19, 2012 at 6:13 am
Yes, Deborah, thank you for the report.
March 19, 2012 at 9:12 pm
You’re welcome, Maryp!
March 19, 2012 at 7:47 am
Hi Deborah – great report! thanks! Made me feel even more lucky to have been there on Handicap day. BUT if I had been in S. CA Sat, I would have been at the Z-downpour – er – shower. Maybe just a “downpouring” of love for the Queen!
March 19, 2012 at 9:14 pm
I’m sure you would have been there, and the weather wouldn’t have thrown you for a loop like it did us Calif. people :)
….a “downpouring” of love for the Queen…… well said!
March 19, 2012 at 9:53 am
Deborah: Thanks so much for this great description of Zenny’s Baby Shower. It felt just like I was there myself!
March 19, 2012 at 9:16 pm
You’re welcome, Abigail! I wish you had been there, and can only imagine the beautiful account you would have written for the day :)
March 18, 2012 at 3:29 pm
@ABIGAIL FROM MONTREAL–I agree with you completely. I am so glad we have made it here to continue our friendships. If any of you have e-mail addresses of Dumplings who are AWOL, maybe you could e-mail them that we are here now. Hugs to all.

Dear Ashton:
Thank you. Hugs, JB
March 18, 2012 at 10:44 pm
Thank you, Ashton. I will go there now.
March 18, 2012 at 3:48 pm
Shari Voltz… I just read what happened to Trey. How horrible!! I’m not sure whatelse to say except, I know that you will comfort your students and will be there for them. Sending you many Z hugs to give you the strength you’ll need to get through this very tough time.
Ok, now, Tasty, hurry up and drop that foal already! I’m getting a lil worried about her. I’m also sad that her and Zenny won’t be pature buddies anymore.
March 18, 2012 at 3:49 pm
@ ALL: As the “Emeritus” Zen-sters know, when I first began THE VAULT I always announced a new article in Zenny’s Diary first — before it went out “into the world.” The reason for this is that Team Z and Zenny herself were responsible for weaving some of the principal threads that resulted in THE VAULT in the first place.
My friend, Marjorie Gawley, fought cancer most of her adult life, succumbing to it in August 2010. Marjorie was an educator/teacher here in Quebec without equal and before she died, I sent her a YouTube video that I made — inspired by OUR KARI — of Zenny dancing. Marjorie loved to dance and in those final weeks and days, the images of Zenny dancing out her joy brought great comfort.
After Marjorie’s death, through Steve Haskin & Donna Rehder Powell (whose SmugMug photos I bookmarked above) I was able to get a message to OUR DOTTIE asking that Zenny run her final race in Marjorie’s memory. Dottie’s response was almost immediate and she wrote out Marjorie’s name and it was affixed to Zenny’s brow band. When you see photos of Zenny in BC 2010. the white on her browband is Marjorie’s name.
I ask you: could ANYTHING be more BEAUTIFUL?
Thousands of Quebec teachers watched BC 2010 to participate in this tribute.
Shortly thereafter, I decided to “follow the flow” and launched THE VAULT for, primarily, horse racing fans. My Zenster family cheered me on through each & every article…..without YOU I would never have GONE ON.
Today, THE VAULT boasts 30,000 visits from fans all over the world!
My latest article is dedicated to OUR KARI, whose very first love (as I understand it) was Ruffian. Here’s the link & I hope you enjoy it. It was hard to write, let me say, but finally 2 weeks later, I’m happy with it:
http://thevaulthorseracing.wordpress.com/2012/03/18/my-echo-my-shadow-me-ruffian/
March 18, 2012 at 4:12 pm
Abrigail – what a great story on Ruffian whom I was not too familiar before, but now I understand why so many people including Kari loved her so much….I know I would have too because she was one of the great ones. Thanks for sharing that and also the photos from yesterday’s shower – all very terrific!
March 18, 2012 at 4:44 pm
Great article and wonderful photos and videos of Ruffian and her family. The one from Kari B. was particularly interesting.
I also liked the link to the photos of Santa Anita and the signing ceremony. It is really beautiful there.
Thank you, Abigail for such excellent work.
March 18, 2012 at 4:54 pm
Dear Abigail:
Just read your beautiful piece on Ruffian and our Kari. I never knew Ruffian sustained a hairline fracture as a two year old and I had never seen Kari’s wonderful tribute video to her. You are spot on about the “presence” that so many of the great ones have. Z and Bernie have it and I see it developing in Eblouissante. A kind of poise and confidence. Ruffian was so beautiful; gorgeous head and eye. Thank you so much for the beautifully written article. Love and Hugs, JB

Abigail, loved the Vault! Very touching. However, the videos would not work for me. I thought that I knew pretty much everything about Ruffian but, I didn’t know that she hind hind end issues and a fracture as a 2 yr old. Intersting stuff! Thank you.

Abigail, as you know I’m one of your biggest fans (remember I wanted you to publish them or put them in a newsletter) well I especially loved this one because of the connection to our Kari and because I always loved Ruffian. It amazes me how you get all those old photos which I delight in seeing. The only pain is I have to copy them all off the computer because I want to save them. Hope someday you’ll be officially in print. Beautifully done! Hugs

Thank you for remembering Kari and her first love in such an extraordinarily special way, Abigail. She wouId have loved this. She and Ruffian are the heroine’s of their own life stories, and are glowing examples of courage in the face of tremendous adversity. Kari’s exquisitely elegant video is a reminder that the most beautiful things in this world are often the most transient. They shoot across the horizon of our lives with the brilliance of a falling star, and then are gone. They leave a permanent imprint on our hearts and in our memories. We search for pieces of them through the things which they loved after they are gone, and we find them. Kari left pieces of herself in the artistry of her videos, in the powerful truth and beauty of her words, and through the great love which she bore for her daughter, grandchildren, and Zenyatta and Team. Flashes of Ruffian can still be found whenever a balletic filly with a swan-like neck suddenly appears on the track, or a magnificent mare with poetry in her hooves engages us in the dance of life. They are here for us still. Always. Thank you for reminding us of that.

Dear Cynthia H.:
Lovely post. Hugs, JB
March 19, 2012 at 9:50 am
@ Cynthia, Max, Judy B., AJ, Sue Fredrick & Heidi K: Thank you all so much for these encouragements and beautiful messages. It was hard taking on Ruffian because so much has been recorded already and one never wants to annoy a serious & expert fan! However, I so wanted to do this for Kari and, as usual, the insight came from my reflections about Kari’s life that Ruffian should be celebrated as she lived, not through her demise. But it is THE VERY BEST to hear from my ZENSTER FAMILY! Sue: I’m still thinking about publishing but it’s a costly undertaking unless a publishing house like Equine Press (Blood-Horse) picks it up. However, one can “publish” PDF’s of favourite stories and that format preserves the photos better. Anyway, I’m still exploring the options…..promise! Love & hugs from me to you

I think that Kelso won his awards in the 1960s before it was called the Eclipse HOY.
He was a great horse. Apparently he liked chocolate milk shakes.
March 18, 2012 at 5:11 pm
max…you are correct….seems like yesterday…..he won 1960 thru 1964…i think…i try to qualify everything….sometimes my memory fails me….

carol in utah.
It is basically the same award, but with another name. He was a super horse and it is good to remember his accomplishments.
My nerves are on edge at the moment over Tasty. Probably there is no need but I am still pacing for that mare to have her foal.
March 18, 2012 at 5:59 pm
Dear Max and Carol:
Never knew Kelso liked chocolate milk shakes. Too cute.
Yes, TT, please have your foal soon. Hugs, JB

Judy I love to learn these little characteristics of horses. In the podcast last week, one of the people at Lane’s End said that Zenyatta likes the soft kind of peppermints. They also said that she is a very good eater and likes carrots with her oats and hay. She was eating right up until she foaled, probably to keep up her strength. I also liked the part about how she was lying down with Z12 until he got up, again probably to converse her strength for the responsibility of looking after the colt prince. These are such good details to know about our equine friends, especially the Queen.
March 18, 2012 at 4:19 pm
Abigail, thank you so much for the link to the photos and to your friend Donna’s collection as well. I have just spent the most wonderful hour or more looking at new photos of Zenny. You made my day.
March 18, 2012 at 4:24 pm
@Everyone, I fell madly in love with a new horse today. (Well he is a 6year old I have just not seen him before. His name is Flat Bold and the son of Flatter. The guys from TVG were talking alot about him. He is a Black Beauty. (Well almost Black) I believe they tecnically have to call him a bay, but the guys were talking about him. He was so Black. I think it goes back to my love for Black Beauty from my childhood. He was just a beauty. Gorgeous and he won today. I was not real familiar with his sire Flatter, but he is going to go on my wish list for horses to visit. He is at Caliborne Farm. I have already looked him up. Flat Bold is a Gelding and unfortunately there want be any younsters. And, wouldn’t you know it Flatter is the Son of (You Know Who) my favorite boy A. P. Indy. Indy you just keep on surprizing me. Seem like I just always love your family. They didn’t say you were Indy’s Grandson. (Should have knownit. I am going to have to go back and see who Flat Bold’s Dam is. I love studing the family.
Did anyone see this Race today?????????

March 18, 2012 at 6:21 pm
Dear Z Family it is late and I can not stay on my computer to long. I have been so busy with my school stuff. I just want to thank everyone for the candles and words. I think to get my classes minds off of the situation I am going to start my classes showing the pictures of Baby Z. The children just love seeing Baby Z and how can that not make one feel better. Then I will go into my class stuff. My horses have helped me through so many things. Zenyatta is an angel and I know she would want to help the children. I told Dawn early I would not show them but I think this will help them and calm me down too. If you have time check out http://www.peppermintpal.com Mistletoe is doing something too.
Please vote for my friend http://adminkentuckyderby.com/oaks/survivors/wally-naperville-illinois
