Mike E. Smith

Mike E. Smith has been one of the leading riders in the sport of Thoroughbred Horse Racing since the early 1990’s. Raised in a racing family, Mike began riding match races in his native New Mexico at the age of 11. He took out his first Jockey’s License at 16 and rode primarily in the mid-west until moving his tack to New York in 1989.

Once based in New York, Mike’s career literally took off. He’s won countless Breeders’ Cup races and each of the American Classics. He’s also won several International Races. Awesome Again, Lure, Holy Bull, Sky Beauty, Skip Away, Unbridled’s Song, Azeri, and Zenyatta are some of the accomplished horses he has ridden to victory.

Mike was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2003 and has received other awards of note for his riding accomplishments.

Until 2005, his primary career goal, winning the Kentucky Derby, eluded him. Then it happened. He will forever remember the complete thrill of winning the Kentucky Derby on GIACOMO. It was magical!

In 2009….he got the mount on ZENYATTA. From the first moment he was in the saddle and she began to stride out, he knew he was “in for the ride of his lifetime!”
