On this day in 1957 at 3.30am Bright Cherry delivered a bay colt at Ballymacall stud. His name was Arkle. It’s enough for me just to whisper his name. What can you say about this phenomenon that hasn’t been said thousands of times? So I will just remember his bravery in defeat, his magnificence in victory and his gentleness in repose.I will always be sad this happiest of horses was denied a gentle old age.Long after we are all gone from this world they will still be talking of Arkle.God bless him.Hugs Sheena.
His owner the marvellous Anne,Duchess of Westminister was born on april 18th 1915.RIP.

The problem which I have is that Arkle’s skeleton is on public display in Ireland, apparently because of a decision of the then Duchess of Westminster. Shouldn’t the horse be returned to the good earth from which, like the rest of us, he sprang?

There’s been some wonderful dialogue here the last 2 days. Always entertaining to read what us racing fans have to say. Coz may stay as a bad boy but I’m sure he’ll be just fine. Love all the comments.
maureen ph[llips
Bad boy of racing?, look at that face, does it look anything but angelic. But you are right, still we love, love, love him in all his badness. You always need someone to shake things up and we should all jump on the Young Prince’s band wagon and enjoy the ride. Just saying, but then, he is my first love so don’t mind me; he can do no wrong in my eyes. It is well.

Very truly a remarkable horse who reminded me of our Queen and humbles me to see our first Prince in the same light. That, one defeat does not define a horse but only makes them better if their spirit is not broken. First Prince will figure it out and like Arkle’s trainer said, Patience is always the key in training a horse, giving them their due and not making them feel like they are being challenged. First Prince is assured of himself and knows who he is and will be damned if anyone wants to challenge him, the trick I think is to treat him like the royalty that he is and in so doing he rewards us with good behavior. It is well. The Prince and John S will figure this thing out. The day is young.
Mary Margaret in Georgia
RIP Elusive Kate. Much too young. One of the heartbreaking risks, personal experiences in breeding.
Coz is definitely to be handled with kid gloves. He needs to stay in tack with his royal pedigree. Coz issues need to be addressed with much care and time. Forcing any creature is not the answer. Honey is better than vinegar. “Now” may not be his time. We all need a lot of patience with this young Prince. He can work through this period. Patience.

I have appreciated all the insight and comments about our first prince, Coz. Just to express what some may be thinking, I wonder if John still sees Zenny in Coz, almost to a fault. She was headstrong but also reasonable and able to focus on her job. From her time at Mayberry’s the common opinion of all who worked with her was she loved to work. An alpha mare is totally different from an alpha stud colt. I wonder if Coz was ever disciplined at LE or Mayberry for his nasty biting habit Or, is it just their job to get a horse conditioned for the next phase of training? Were all of them ready to excuse Coz’s behavior because of who he is? I have no idea…these are just thoughts running through my head. He certainly needs a different approach and whether John can do it or if he’s suited better elsewhere the Mosses will make the best decision. To my way of thinking. if…and that’s still a big if…Coz can’t settle down and be properly trained, losing the family jewels may be the answer. I am thankful these dicisions aren’t mine to make. I’m going to simply enjoy whatever happens next knowing his best interests will always be first and foremost in the hearts of his owners.
shirleeinindy
We have to remember that Coz is not the only 3 year old colt out there who is from a racing royal family and has not had his first start yet. Taco, Jess’s Dream, has not started and I think he is a month or so older than Coz. These 3 year olds are just teenagers and are better off starting late than to be rushed into a too early start.
Tizgood
John definately sees many of Zenyatta’s physical attributes in CoZ, his shoulder, length
of stride, the beautiful way he arches his neck and even when Mike Smith rode him
he said he smiled all the way around the track, but his is not Zenyattahe is CoZmic One and has to make a name for himself. Zenyatta has given him all she can, unfortunately as with humans she is not able to help him along she has the next best thing thr man who
helped her along JS.

Let us not forget about a few bad fillies that their connections had to deal with. Many creatures react differently to different genders. First, we have to think like they do to understand them better, to be able to help them through their issues, extra patience.

Well said. No horse had any say in whether he or she actually wanted to be a racehorse. These are self aware beings and God’s own creatures in need of human protection and patience always.

Bobbie --- Elkhorn WI
I’ve read all the comments and my only concern is that neither John nor any of his staff get injured by Coz. I keep recalling what happened to D. Lukas when a horse reared and he got hit in the head. For you breeders—doesn’t temperament count when it comes to selecting a prospective sire? I read somewhere that Zenyatta’s pedigree includes several noted stallions with questionable temperament (Roberto, Hail to Reason, etc). I would think that temperament would affect performance on the track.
carol in arkansas
Hi Bobbie….if you are referring to the incident with Tobasco Cat…it was Lucas’ son who was kicked in the head….i think
carol in arkansas
Or maybe you are right…now must check
Especially Horses / So Cal
It was Jeff Lukas and he is still experiencing difficulties to this day because of that kick.
Bobbie --- Elkhorn WI
Jeff was knocked down by Tabasco Cat and had a significant head injury but I remember that a few years ago D Wayne also was hit in the head by a horse. Nothing serious but still scary.
Bobbie --- Elkhorn WI
June 2012 the week before the Belmont (Optimizer) Lucas was injured and had stitches for a head wound down to the bone. Horse reared. Glad to see my memory is still working!
Karen R.
Bobbie, you are correct. Jeff Lucas was knocked down by Tabasco Cat after the horse got loose on the track and Jeff, on foot, tried to stop him. Jeff tried to avoid a collision but they both ended up taking same path. Sad that Jeff still has to deal with issues from it.
shirleeinindy
The incident with Tabasco Cat and Jeff Lukas was not a horse being mean. I know from our horses on the farm if you get in front of almost any of them, they will run you over. TC was a bit of a handful but Jeff’s accident was not evil temper on the part of the horse.
Max
shirlee. Same thing with Optimizer kicking D Wayne in the head. Lukas took full responsibility for making a mistake with the horse. Never said that the horse had issues. As far as I know, Optimizer is still in full possession of his vital faculties. He’s a rival of Danny. Finished 2nd last year to Dan in the Ben Baruch He’s owned by Calumet and they are trying to breed stamina horses like the days of old. Brad Kelly is particularly fond of the offspring of Big D, such as Americain.
Tizgood
Dear Bobbie,
CoZ does not have any habits like Tobasco Cat, he has concentration issues and
he had biting and just wanting to go all the time like a little boy trying to sit in his seat
with a lot of energy.

Dear zfansandy,
I read your response to my post about Sunday Silence which was a joke and am so sorry you did not see it as such. I posted the same for first prince, Cozmic One, stating that he could not possibly be a trouble maker. Is that true?, of cause not, but just to make light of issues. Light jokes are allowed on this blog I hope . Your comment about stamping the autograph on my forehead was unwarranted and mean spirited. Yes we are talking about Cozmic One but other horses are also been mentioned on this blog even as the discussions are about Cozmic One. Again, I am sorry if my joke fell flat on its face but it was only a joke. Wishing you a Blessed rest of the weekend. It is always well at Z Nation.
maureen ph[llips
Dear Max,
Hope you are having a wonderful weekend so far. I am responding to your comment on the previous frame about what I said of Sunday Silence in response to @ zfansandy’s comment about Sunday Silence. It was my lame attempt at a joke and sorry that the joke fell flat on its face. I said same thing about Cozmic One and we all know that’s not true, but meant it as a joke. I do hope jokes are still allowed on this sight. Hope I have managed to clear that up. Again, forgive my fallen joke, I’LL try to do better or just stay off the jokes. It is always well at Z Nation, and Blessings are wished you always. Much love.
Max
No problem. It would be pretty amazing to get a hoof print from any horse, other than the horse artists, let alone Sunday Silence. Always glad to see your comments.
If Coz were reading some of these remarks from those who are enthusiastic about the benefits of gelding, he might paraphrase an old Searchers song from the 60s, coming as he does from a musical family:
“Don’t take my parts away – no, no, no, – Don’t take my parts away – no, no, no. Because I may need them some day!”
maureen ph[llips
Dear Max,
Thanks. Re the hoof print from Sunday Silence, I did get it. My friend at the time was good friends with one of the owners and seeing how much I loved SS got that for me. At the time, I wasn’t really into horse racing but absolutely loved SS. Seeing that, he made it happen to cheer me up since I was very ill.. He actually told me then that it took quite some doing to get that print but I did not quite understand what he meant. Unless he lied to me which is possible. It’s in the past and I only was using it as a joke. Enough about SS, may he continue to rest in perfect peace . It is well, Remain Blessed.
Max
It is entirely possible that SS did do the hoof print. Cherish it.
maureen ph[llips
Dear Max,
I meant to say ‘site’, not sight. Thanks, and once again, my sincere apologies.
Ann K
Temperament does seem to be an important issue. Everybody has theories, and I have one too: Coz’s whole story of growing up is a story of increasing isolation from his surroundings. Places, people, other horses–all keep changing on him. If you could get into the Derby on travel points, Coz could certainly qualify. Moving all over the place, he keeps travellin’ on with no constant companions in his life. Every time he gets to know somebody, they disappear on him. There’s no stability. No wonder he is on edge all the time. He needs more stability in his life, not more cupcakes or plane trips or road trips.
Max
Coz went to Mayberry Farm to be broken like his momma did, but then he went like her to train with John and has been with John ever since. John and his peeps have been constant in his life. John spends training time in NY and Saratoga as well as California and Coz goes along as part of the stable. Travel like this is not unusual and does not upset most horses because they see the same human faces and other stablemates, and have the same routines wherever they are. Dan loved his trips to Saratoga for the summer and to Toronto for the Woodbine Mile. He liked being looked after and exercised by the local women at Woodbine. Change like this is often good and a learning experience for a horse in training.
Tizgood
There is a similar situation going on in the UK with Adian O Brian and Ballydole and a 3 year old named JFK. He ran well as a 2 year old and won but as Adian says he is babish
we call it coltish. So he kept him home in Ireland to run. He is by Galileo and I Believe Monteju a very old equine family and will not be gelded. Sheena please comment. She
discussed his first 3 year old race last week and he traveled for the first time and came in last. He was ridden by one of the best jockey in the UK Ryan Moore and he said he did
not like the ground it was too soft and Adian thought he may have not had enough condition. So all horses have bad runs and maybe CoZ won’t mature until he is 4, one
never knows. And the same with JFK he may not mature until 4, but because of his family his jewels will remain and Adian and Ryan will have to work with it, just like JS and CoZ
jockey.
Max
JFK is by Galileo not Montjeu. His momma is Rumpelstiltskin and his dam sire is Danehill. Coolmore owns him and they are all about breeding. They will not geld a horse unless there is a serious medical reason to do it. Look at how they fought so long and hard to save Nick. They also own Zenny’s full brother.
Most people here may be looking at this gelding from the perspective of the sire, who has many many offspring. The Mosses will examine it from the perspective of the mare’s legacy. Zenny has had only 3 foals and tragically lost one. Why geld one of the two remaining foals who are inherently valuable if other means can be found to correct problems? Noble Mission had baby issues, but a monogrammed hood and time cured them. Coz and Red may turn out to be hopeless as racers, but their sons, daughters etc are another very big question. No one knows when and where lightning will strike, but you have to give it a chance.
shirleeinindy
Max,
Your reference to monogrammed hood brought to my mind Gate Dancer and the gawd awful head piece he wore. Remember, covered both ears and was white. Couldn’t miss him in the race.
Max
Noble Mission had his hood custom made and imported from Europe. Monogram was Henry Cecil’s initials, gold on black. Made NM look like Zorro. Apparently, he wore it around the stable because he liked wearing it. It was only recently when he arrived at Lane’s End that we discovered that NM looks like his grandfather, Sadler’s Wells. They both have the Northern Dancer blaze.

Dear LauraJ
Wanted to thank you for your informative posts. My young 3 year old Night Prowler that I love so much is by Great Sire Giant’s Causeway. They have gelded him in the last year. I am not suggesting that Coz be gelded but it does sometimes have to happen to offspring of Great Sires and Dams. I hope like you and a lot here that he can stay intact. But, think the Moss’s and John will do what’s best for him.

Thanks for this report. I caught a glimpse of it on the news and nodded off before I could find out where this happened.

@Carol Great news for the buffalo!!We only had 1 cow loose in the town one sunday morning .Police killed it said it was a danger to the public at 5.30am on a sunday morning. Stupid or what???Sheena.

I was once driving in my car when a real herd of cows (about 25) broke free from their field and stampeded down the country road. I just stopped the car and sat quietly until they passed on both sides. It was actually pretty marvellous. All returned safely to their barn.

Sheena and Max, We were up about 3 a.m. one morning to watch a meteor shower from our back patio (there’s nothing behind our home for miles). It was a crystal clear beautiful night with a canopy of stars over our heads. (Cold too! – so it must have been winter). Soon after the shower started, a small pack (about 5-6 . . . can’t remember now) coyotes rounded the dirt road on the curve by our home. They stopped and were all looking up too. When a big burst came by, they would all howl. They were probably 100 feet from the porch, and heard us talking. One of the most memorable nights we’ve had. And unfortunately they haven’t showed up again for a late night chat like that – although we see them occasionally by themselves on the other side of the fence or on our walks in the early morning. Love experiences like that – so rare and beautiful.
Max
Great story. Maybe they will return one day? That story shows that we are or should be at one with the animal kingdom, tiny creatures all in the vast universe. Like coyotes and wolves. If one is stressed out, listening to wolves howling will sooth the nerves. Best heard on CDs or iPod as real wolves in packs can be a handful.
shirleeinindy
What a great experience. All I get are raccoons, squirrels, possums and chip monks. Every once in awhile, buzzards hang out on someone’s roof.

Dear Tizgood.Every horse is entitled to one stinker of a race.So far JFK is still entered for our guineas who knows he may even win!!!His jewels will definitely stay intact.Hugs Sheena.
Max
For sure.
Max
Sheena. Isn’t JFK headed to the Derby? Read that Gleneagles and another Ballydoyle horse would end up in the Guineas. Hootie might be there too. Not decided?
Tizgood
Sheena,
Didn’t you say JFK was also from Monteju family?
You are so right every horse has a stinker and JS does
not usually get them ready to win first time out. in the UK
the Equine families are very old and established and
the horses from those families are not gelded. The case with
AP Indy was so very well handled with a very special surgery that
had never been done and then the question of whetherhe would
be fertile with one testicle was in everyones mind and then he was
and he built and empire combining Seatle Slew and Secretariate.
Often in the US we think that being able to handle a horse outweights
their ability to breed and we lose sight of creating great families.
But we are all different !!
Max
Galileo and Montjeu were half brothers. They are sons of Sadler’s Wells. JFK is a son of Galileo. He is not related to Montjeu in any other way.
Tizgood
Sheena,
I know what you mean about Galileo and Montigue, you were saying
they were both important families and used the names together. I noticed that Miesque is Rumplestilskins dam is that the Miesque Freddy Head rode in BC Mile
and won, she is from the USA?

Dear Max.I have never been keen on seeing Arkle’s skeleton either.I suppose I can understand the Duchess would have been worried what would happen to the grave after her days but they could easily have buried him at The National stud. They have beautiful gardens there.Charmian Hill left Dawn Run at the mercy of the knacker’s yard in France when she got killed. How cruel was that??
My poor mother was terrified of cows despite being a ‘country girl’!I’ve never been afraid.Lovely pic on FB of Elusive Kate’s colt. He’s at Newsells park stud.It was her first.Very sad.Hugs Sheena.

These deaths from foaling are just awful. I still get upset at what happened to Urban Sea. I’m very surprised that the UK police killed a cow as a danger to the public. Oxford is a fairly big city but there were cows in the meadows near the colleges. Blenheim Palace had them and sheep herds roaming around with the tourists. Just stand still and they will pass you by. You get used to this quickly or you go home.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Tizgood Galileo and Montjeu are both sons of Saddlers Wells.Mont jeu died in march 2012.He was a very successful sire of Derby winners. An eccentric genius remember him refusing to go into the paddock at Ascot. He is greatly missed at Coolmore.Hugs Sheena.
Tizgood
Thanks for the clarification I knew there was a connection somewhere- Saddler’s
Well’s boys.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Think Ballydoyle have JFK in the Guineas and Derby.I’d prefer Ol’Man River myself,he’s one of Montjeu’s last-ever crop but anything can happen before then.Hugs sheena.Remember that Searchers song well!
Max
Liked your comment about Montjeu. Nijinsky was like that too. He sometimes refused to do any work at all. Good thing that he had Vincent O’Brien as his trainer. Seems like the Moose philosophy is rather widespread after all.
Have to see the final line up for the Guineas. If Hootie goes, he could benefit from a UK jockey. That Rowley Mile is a tough go. Think only US jockey Steve Cauthen has had any success with it. Dettori rode Hootie at the Breeders Cup, but he’s probably committed to his regular rides.

A little brief authority can play such fantastic tricks before high heaven as to make the angels weep. The angels are not the only ones weep.
Authority, among other things, is very brief. Clearly so when we try to control our thoughts and keep our tongues in check. Misused authority makes people self-destruct. It is not so much the authority we wield over others that destroys us, but our failure to wield authority over ourselves. What terrific power we have, but still we whine, “I just can’t do it.”

It wasn’t a good day for me, nothing went right and when I thought nothing more could go wrong, I lost my phone!. The last time I recall having the phone was when I called up the first prince to have a little chat with him. Not liking what I was saying nor the tone of my voice, he promptly hung up on me!, I get mad and the end result is a lost phone. On a serious note though, I need prayers for the return of my phone. I had it in my jacket pocket and it must have fallen out and I didn’t realize it.I need a miracle. Sounds like a good name for a horse.
Am sure the first prince is screaming, please, don’t blame me for your lost phone am still dealing with mom’s and aunties and uncles who are mad at me about my race on friday; and as much as I feel for you, just leave me out of it.! I hope you all know its a joke except the part of being besides myself for losing my phone. Am so sick, this would be the 10th phone I have lost. Unreal. I’LL try to go back to sleep and hopefully have some good news to report tomorrow, It is well. I hope everyone is having a good nights rest.
