Good Morning,
Thank you so much for all of the kind messages you have sent ME offering congratulations on my IN FOAL news! Dottie and John were reading them last night and told ME about them! I am still chuckling at the cute names all of you are suggesting.
I also thought it was TOO CUTE when you referred to ME as having a BABY BUMP! I’m still giggling over this comment! And a name that is still making me smile is WINK WINK! How precious is this!
I promise I will do my very best to eat properly and stay nice and healthy. As you can see, I’m out enjoying the lush grass with my dear friend, Mona De Momma! She is a Grade 1 winning mare by Speightstown. As a matter of fact, Mona also raced in California…so we have a great deal in common.
The weather is quite warm in Lexington now. The rain has stopped for a bit and the sun is shining.
I’m one very happy HORSE!
Again, thank you for all of your kind messages. Happy JUNE!
With Love,
Hugs to all~(Especially my dear JOHN on his birthday!)

Happy birthday to John — Thanks Team Z for sharing all this…. you know how much we so appreciate your graciousness, both on and off the track, in KY and CA. I like the name Bernadetta! :)
Arnita Strutz
so happy to hear you’re in foal. Hope everything goes right – “crossed hooves” Hey maybe that would be a good name or “hooves crossed”

I’m all in for a baby shower with donations to New Vocations or Old Friends. Maybe we could contact them and set up a fund from all Z’s fans and put it out there on the web site with directions for donations. If some of you out there let me know I can start the inquiries.

Good afternoon Zenyatta I am having 5th grade with-draw :) I miss my children already. I hope your outside because it is so beautiful today. I am heading outside again to dig in the yard. I could live outside. I hope your feeling on top of the world. I know all of us are so excited for you sweet girl. Enjoy the rest of this beautiful day. Hugs and Kisses, Shari missing her Homeroom 215 XXXOOO
@ Susan in Tn I won’t get to see Dusty until after Brooke comes back from vacation but I will post everything about Dusty and the others. I will take pictures too. Keep telling us about Rootbeer and all the other sweethearts. I love to hear what you are doing with them. You are teaching me while your telling about your work. I am not sure what to do sometimes :)
@DJ it was hard to keep it together. I started crying a couple days before that and got Corey so upset. He started crying and couldn’t stop. One little boy started crying in DQ so I knew I needed to keep it together. Thank you for caring :)
@ Kari beautiful video. I loved it.
@ Judy thank you for the info :)

@Kari B: Loved the video- they really are “working mothers”!
@Terry Crow: Funny Bill Shoemaker story! I know what you mean re: being around at Zenyatta’s time. We are so lucky to have the access to her like we do, by way of her kind people and modern technology. If we were there during Man O’ War’s time, we would pretty much be limited to races on the radio and newspaper stories and newsreels-unless you were lucky enough to be able to travel to his farm.
@Laura J: Good luck to Step!
@Trina N: Definitely an adventure!
@Judy B: I love “Happy Ever After”! I hope that is what he has ahead of him. He is so bright,curious,friendly-he doesn’t know he has been rescued by way of his mother. Right now, the world is his oyster.
RESCUE AT RIVER RIDGE: Well, the last few days have been exciting. Tater and Dillon (I didn’t really know them) have gotten a “forever home”-their new people are fixing their fence and then they will come back to get them. Sly went to his new home on Monday. Jane (RR owner) has had to turn away 11 horses over the last 2 weeks. Yesterday she was able to take in 2 more.
Yesterday I haltered Rusty and led him around and, of course, he was a STAR! He has been haltered before so it was no big deal-and he would try to do calculus if you asked him, he’s such a friendly, willing boy! But here is the really exciting part- I was able to halter and lead ROOT BEER around the round pen and he has only been haltered once before and it didn’t go well, I was told. He was so good-I was so proud of him! He wasn’t as sure of himself as Rusty, but I think he trusts me enough, he was willing to try. He let me rub and pet him back to his flank area without any tension. I think Rusty trusts mankind in general, but Root Beer is going to need that one-on-one relationship to thrive.
Chester is a little at loose ends, I think. He was hanging out with the new foal’s mother before she gave birth, but now she won’t let him get near and he is afraid of the other horses. He hangs around the barn in the shade. I soaked horse cookies in water yesterday and that was a hit! He ate the cookies and slurped up the water-best thing since sliced bread! I brushed him and he enjoyed that. He is still very thin although he looks so much better than when he came in. He needs an extra-special home.
Happy Ever After (love it!) is SO friendly and getting more independent by the day. He will head off to look at something and his poor mama is trotting behind him-and it is HOT outside! He comes right up now and loves to be scratched, petted, etc. His milk teeth have erupted- they look like Chiclets (the gum)-so cute! His mother is so dedicated to him. I wonder how many babies she’s had.

Have a great evening Zen and Zenswink.
Thoughts go out to the horses lost in the fire and those who loved them.

@Shari V: Just saw your post- I can’t wait for you to start and look forward to hearing about your experiences! We can exchange ideas. I think you’ll find your “teacher intuition” is going to stand you in good stead! I can imagine you are going thru 5th-grade withdrawal :(

Congratz Z! I think Wink Wink would be a great name. Very happy to hear the great news!
Happy B day to John also. I too am a Gemini and we do keep thinks interesting!
Love and best wishes on both your happy events!
Terry Crow
@Susan in TN–You expressed in a few words what it took a paragraph for me to say and I said it badly. God bless you and the work you are doing. Those horses should erect a statue of your likeness.
Susan in TN
@Terry Crow: Thank you for your kind words but there are so many horses out at River Edge that I’m not doing anything with-it can be really overwhelming,if you think about it that way, though. The horses are the heroes- that they have been mistreated and/or neglected and still, for the most part, are willing to give people another chance-that says a lot for the spirit of the horse! Thank you, Terry.(and you see how long my posts get!)

I can go for the name ZENMASTER, because it honors both ZEN and John, her fantastic trainer!
Susan in TN
@Christine in VA: I hadn’t heard about the fire-I looked it up. How horrible. My thoughts are with everyone involved.
Also, my thoughts and prayers are with the tornado victims near Boston.

Queen Z, you look absolutely FABULOUS!!! You & your buddy look so relaxed & happy!! Happy Birthday John – the best trainer I’ve ever seen in my lifetime!! Awesome how you let Z grow into racing instead of rushing her & of course everything else you did for her! Other trainers should follow your example. Thank you for the post Dottie!! Love this photo!! Big Hugs to you Z, Cara from Texas xxxooo :)

Zenyatta, keep expecting the compliments about you being back in foal. They won’t stop for a long time. I don’t know yet what name I would suggest for your foal-I still have to think about it. You definitely need to take care of yourself, eat right, get your rest, and everything else now that you are back in foal. I’m glad you’re aware of that and that you’re taking some initiative. I hope the good weather in Kentucky continues and that you continue to graze and have fun with your paddock pals.

Dearest Queen-Z & Team-Z,

To Susan in Tn.:
So glad you like the name. It’s wonderful that some of the horses have found forever homes. That Rusty sounds like quite a character and I think you have really made a big difference in Root Beer’s life in such a short time. I think it’s his trust in you that he allowed you to halter and lead him. They know when their loved. Hug, J.B.
To Shari Voltz:
You’re welcome. You’re another special person, like Susan. Best wishes in your rescue work. Hugs, J.B.

To Terry Crow:
I think you might be right. After all MOH is European and should like the distance of the Belmont. Nehro is a good closer and might be up there in the end. I’m still thinking Animal Kingdom, but I really love the heart and courage of MMM. On another subject. Did you happen to see the video I posted and also, Abigail from Montreal posted, on going from Race Mare to Broodmare. I directed a question at Abigail and Ensign, but so far no answer. I wondered why the vet in the video, Dr. Tanner, stated that once the foals are born it’s really important to get the mare in foal again right away. It seems to me, with about 30,000 foals born every year and a lot of them never getting to the track, why they don’t breed back less frequently. There are not enough rescue organizations or funds to help all the horses. What happens to them? What do you think?. Hugs, J.B.

Oh my goodness! That is really a great picture of you and Mona De Momma. I remember her. I seen her raced a few times. That is really cool! Yes, eat and stay healthy! I love you so much Queen Z.

To Terry Crow:
I was wrong to refer to MOH as European. His sire is Kingmambo (USA) and his dam is Silk and Scarlet (GB). He was born in KY., but I guess he was raised and trains in Ireland. Hugs, J.B.

My Sweet Lady Zenyatta, You look marvelous grazing in the sunshine with your new friend. Happy Birthday to John! What a wonderful birthday present for you to be in foal. Zenyatta, that would be so awesome for John to train your baby. I’m so glad you are happy & healthy. I wish the BEST for you & the little one. Sending Love With Hus & Kisses To You Zenyatta From Alabama, AmandaG.
