Good Morning,
I love this! Look who is at Del Mar having a few days of RNR. It is my dear friend, Jeanne Mayberry. She is the wonderful lady, who along with her daughter, April, taught ME my very first lessons at their training center in Ocala, Florida.
Jeanne is taking a few days off and relaxing in good Ol’ DEL MAR. She is here with her other daughter, Summer, and her family. In the photo with Jeanne is her grandson, BRYAN. Jeanne loves to come to the barn and visit with her ‘students’. I know John and Dottie always keep her up-to-date on how ‘we’ are all doing. It makes it so much FUN for everyone to stay involved.
April went on a vacation a bit earlier…so everyone is taking a moment to refresh before they gear up for another season of ‘breaking yearlings’. Dottie always equates this to ‘going to school’. The yearlings start arriving in late September (after the Keeneland Yearling Sale) to begin the program. They settle in and get acquainted with their new surroundings, and then start to learn their lessons: to wear tack, have a rider on their back and then learn to take the cues from the rider to jog, gallop, and lengthen stride etc. All of this is so, so important to every horse and his / her future.
These lessons progress throughout the winter and then in March, April, May and June, the individual horses… now 2…leave Jeanne and April to go to the racetrack to their respective trainers. When the horse leaves the training center depends on several factors. The most important is HOW the horse is doing and the progress he/she is making. Just like humans, horses develop at different levels and different stages. Some are fast learners and quickly ‘get it’. Others, may need a bit more one-to-one attention to learn a task and and master it. Learning for this horse may progress at a slower pace.
Meeting individual differences, in MY TEAM’S opinion, is just as important for a horse as it is for a young child and a developing student.
Just like school, the students leave each year to go on to a new teacher. The same principle applies here…the 2 year olds leave to go on to the race track, to their new trainer, and the next stage of their career.
I must say, I adore Jeanne and April. They always treated ME with such LOVE and PATIENCE. So much goes into the development of a race horse…and every lesson, every consideration, and every single person who touches you can have such an impact on your future. I’ve been SO BLESSED!
I think they feel I was ‘REALLY A TERRIFIC STUDENT’. I know they are EXTREMELY PROUD OF ME and WHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED.
With Love,
Hugs to All~ (Have fun in Del Mar, Jeanne!)

@ Charlie & ALL ZEN-STERS: I have found tons of great footage on YouTube. If you go to YouTube and search for Terlingua1849 (no spaces) you should arrive at my “Channel” and there are about 100 pieces of tape there about a HUGE number of great horses. (There are other things too — like how to thread a sewing machine! — but the vast majority concerns thoroughbreds & other horses.)
Here’s the link, in case the TERLINGUA1849 search fails: http://www.youtube.com/user/Terlingua1849?feature=mhsn

Dear Abigail in Montreal:
I don’t know of a site that celebrates Thoroughbreds equal to yours. Hugs, J.B.

Dear Trina Nagele:

Z, thank you so much for the lesson on the training of yearlings, and for sharing the picture of your dear first teacher, Jeanne Mayberry with her grandson. She and April gave you a wonderful foundation upon which your John taught you to utilize your full potential and blossom into the shining star you turned out to be.
Shari V., Trina Nagele, Abigail from Montreal, and all other teachers (of humans AND animals) on this site….a big High Hoof to you all!! I salute you and thank you for the far reaching positive effects you have on your students and on our world.
Eveline and Judy B…thank you for the links to those beautiful boys, Totilias, and Kris S
Terry…LOL!

@judy berube. Mr. Commons is definitely a charmer. That photo is very nice. Also it was a brilliant idea of yours to post the video of Zenyatta in the snow. I loved it the first time and I love it even more every time that I see it. She is such a perfect looking horse. And how great is it to see a happy Zenyatta and some snow and cool weather again in all this summer heat? Really really great. Thanks.
Max
@judy berube. Thanks for the photo of Stay Thirsty. I do love Bernie’s boy. He is so handsome and a true late bloomer like his sire. Go Thirsty, and make your fans and your daddy proud by winning the Travers like Bernardini did. Zenyatta might be happy too.

Dear Max:
I love him too and hope he wins the Travers like his Dad. Hugs, J.B.

@Barbara Wood—-Sorry you are cancelling your trip to Ky, the weather is beautiful now, in the 70’s today & no humidity. I hope you will come whenever you can. It’s a great place.
Have you had much rain there, I certainly hope so. I know it has been terrible for everyone down there.

@Lil in KY– we only had about 1/4″ Saturday night. 105 today. It’s really wearing. We’ll for sure do KY next year some time. Also hoping for the BC 2012. Hope all the Dumplings can go.
Sweet Z–every evening my thoughts turn to you, hoping you’ve had a good day and managed to spread your magic to someone who needs it. You are the cure of choice for what ails us. Love you always.
SPeaking of cures, I’d sure like to hear from our Catherine Uher. WIsh we had told her to appoint a “reporter”.

Another informative diary entry Zenny/Dottie! I think it is so important in the early stages of a horse’s life to have the right people training them. Just like the first two years in a child’s life. Very crucial years. A patient, nurturing and kind teacher can do wonders.

Zen, very informative post today. Always wondered how the babies got their start to their careers. Thank you for sharing. X & O’s for you!

Great seeing them.. Friends of mine for my 60th birthday.. gave me Ocala horse Farms tours.. They heard me talk about you so much and mentioning the Mayberry connection but when they went to think of something unique.. They couldn’t remember the Mayberry name nor how to contact.. I had their contact info.. just had not got around to calling or emailing.. Ideally I would have loved to seen you for my 60th birthday.. but they though this was the next best.. We live only 30 mins from the farm.. can’t believe at one point in yours and mine lives we were 30 minutes away from each other.. Have a wonderful rest of the week team Z and family and baby bump.. LOL

To TC: Yes! Infallibility! Laughing with you and so cute once again.. Thank you.
DJ
To Trina N: You are simply Amazing! This offer has touched me deeply. If this is not the greatest example of what Love is, and what was brought about through Zenyatta’s Fame and Fortune, the simple, most important thing…Love.

Turning In..For those “Z” Friends who who would like an Evening Prayer/Hymn:
………………………………….
Amazing Grace! how sweet the sound,
That saved a soul like me!
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see.
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
