Good Morning All!
John and Dottie were on their way back to the barn yesterday afternoon when these adorable POODLES were driving right next to them with their owner. SOPHIE thought they looked just like her….only MUCH bigger!
John simply had to get this photo. (Needless to say, Dottie was driving!) The 2 dogs in the back sure seemed to be enjoying every moment of the summer breeze while driving around town. I think lots of our 4-legged pals LOVE DEL MAR!
The real point of John and Dottie’s trip from the barn was to go to the market and purchase more dandelion leaves for the horses. Per MY JOHN, they absolutely love them! I do remember that John always tried to have some fun and different things for us to munch on and play with all of the time….often with the primary objective being to change the pace from our normal routine…and KEEP THINGS HEALTHY AND FUN FOR US!
Perhaps you remember meeting my BARN 55 friend, BRONZE BEAUTY. In an earlier diary, I referred to her as “Sleeping Beauty” as she LOVES her naps. Well, John also knows she LOVES dandelion leaves. So much so, she’ll wake up to have them. Please enjoy her photos. She is a DOLL!
It can be pretty terrific to be a lucky DOG or a fortunate HORSE enjoying life in DEL MAR!
With Love,
Hugs to All~(Have some fun today!)

Dear Queen Zenyatta & the Royal Baby –
.
How beautiful are those two poodles? I think they were smiling for John’s camera!
.
Bronze Beauty IS a true beauty. I think she was snoozing when some of the Dumplingz visited Barn 55 back in July, if I remember correctly. She is making me rethink dandelion greens, which my Grandmother considered a “find” and “highly usable” in her farm kitchen but I thought they were bitter and inedible. Of course, I was 4 years old when I made THAT decision!
.
The Summer Racing Season is in full swing but there’s one name blatantly missing from the card – YOU, Queen Z. Thanks always to Dottie, the Voice of Zenyatta, for keeping us in the “Z loop” so we can learn more and feel a part of the action.

Dear Dottie and Zeny: Thanks for the great photos. I have a dog too. His name is Eddie and he loves putting his head out when I am driving. He is a mix beagle so his long ears fly and spread out as he enjoys the ride.
Zeny – hope the weather is great in Lanes End and you are enjoying your naps. Hugs and Kisses, Marilu

Dandelion leaves! Who knew? John Shirreffs is the best. Thanks for the cute Mini pictures and of course Bronze Beauty, Love to you, Zenyatta. I saw the Zenyatta Breyer horse and ornament in my Back in the Saddle catalog.

I think the dogs and horses (and any other animal) is lucky to have John and Dotty looking after them! :-)

@Judy Berube-Yes, my daughter had a very happy childhood, just as all kids should have and deserve.@marshall-Glad you enjoyed the joke. Glad you enjoyed the joke. @Abigail from Montreal-Looking forward to your story on Will Harbut. His statement that Man o”War was just the mostest horse that ever was is hard to argue with. Big Red’s original caretaker when he retired is almost lost to history, a man named John Henry Buckner. Here is today’s joke.–The Pope had just finished a tour of the east coast and was taking a limousine to the airport. Having never driven a limo, he asked the chauffeur if he could drive for awhile. The chauffeur didn’t really have much of a choice, so he climbs in the back of the limo and the Pope takes the wheel. The Pope proceeds onto HWY 95 and starts accelerating to see what the limo could do. He gets to about 90 mph, and suddenly he sees the blue lights of the State police in his mirror. He pulls over and the trooper comes to the window. The trooper, seeing who it was, says “Just a moment please. I need to call in.” The trooper calls in and asks for the chief. He tells the chief that he’s got a REALLY important person pulled over and asks how he should handle it. “Is it the governor?” replied the chief. “NO, this guy is more important.” Is it the president?” replied the chief. “No. Even more important,” replies the trooper. “Well, WHO is it?” screams the chief. “I don’t know, sir,” replies the trooper, “but he’s got the Pope as his chauffeur.”

Sweet report. I love Del Mar too.

Oh! How cute…love the post. That is great info about dandelion greens! Bronze Beauty surely looks content, but I am sure all of the horses at Barn #55 are loved and well cared for…this is great!

Hey, how is Ebbloissant doing?

Your John is a very special guy. I’m so impressed he would buy dandelion greens for his horses. He must be a wonderful person. Just look at how relaxed and content Bronze Beauty appears! Thanks for sharing those photos and the picture of the traveling poodles as well. Thanks, Dottie!

To: Zenyatta and Bronze Beauty. Come on over to my house for a picnic. I have dandelions in my yard. BB is certainly a sleeping beauty. I hope to see her race one of these days. Thank you and Dottie and John for the news and all the great photos.

Hi Zenny, those pictures of your friend are adorable. In Dutch a dandelion is called “paardebloem” translation – horseflower. @ JAG – went to the site and sent my comment about the wild horses. @ All – thanks so much for yesterdays birthday wishes. @ DMCQ – very nice post, thanks for the help on how to post a picture.

Dear Zenny, I have missed you so much! I hope you and Tasty T are enjoying summer now that the heat has eased up a little. I didn’t know that horses liked dandelion greens!! What a great horseman Your John is-I’m so glad you two found each other. Bronze Beauty is too cute curled up in her stall and then- “oh-what’s this?” The poodles are very cute, too, but not as cute as Sophie! Take care, sweet girl-love you much <3

Dear Zenny and Baby Z – I live on the East Coast in New Jersey and I am jealous. I want to move to California and spend time at DelMar and Hollywood Park. Have a blessed day beautiful girl.

Dear Z friends, I have missed you all so much, too. Hope everyone is doing well- I am certainly better. I have not read back thru the posts(but will) so I am not caught up on all the news.
I went out to River Edge this a.m. The vet came out to see several of the horses and was going to check Chester, too. Well, poor Chester had 2 rotten molars on the top that the vet wiggled out with his hand! He said he should feel better and eat better, too. He put him on an antibiotic. He assessed his arthritis and said for a 28-30 year old, it’s not bad. He started him on Equithrive, which I’m not familiar with. Anyone ever used it? He said they have had good results with older horses using it. It helps reduce inflammation but does not have the side effects of the NSAIDS. It goes in his food. He said he seems happy and certainly looks better. I think so, too, but it’s nice to get an “outside” opinion!
Rusty and Rootbeer were excited to see me-very cute. I haven’t posted since Dawn Conrad stopped at the rescue on her way thru Nashville. First of all, Dawn was just as nice as you would imagine! Rootbeer really liked her-and he is the shy one. I brought him out so Dawn could visit with him (without Rusty in her back pocket!) and he was SO good and relaxed. He told me later that Dawn knew just how to talk to him and her petting was top-notch :) I got some pictures of him and Dawn to send to his friend Shari Volz.
Sasparilla has shed almost all his baby fuzz and is a pretty dark bay. He is still growing like a weed and has to really bend to nurse now! He will probably be weaned in about a month.
@Terry Crow: Great joke!
@DJ: Beautiful prayer-thank you.
Will check back later-warm wishes to all<3

John is such a fabulous trainer and lover of horses. Being in the stable area many times I think John should teach young trainers how to respect and treat the horses. I have never been in a more Zen environment then in Barn 55. John you are a HORSE WHISPER and God Bless you for taking such great care of the horses in your barn. The other trainer I really admired for his love for the horses was the late Bobby Frankel. So many trainers and owners today run their barns like a business without regard the the horses. Kudos to to Zenyatta’s John!!

Dear Susan in Tn.:
Thank you for the update on the Sweeties. Looks like Dawn made a friend. Rusty and Rootbeer missed you; too cute, not surprised, they know you love them. Glad Chester will feel better now, I’m sure. Sounds like Sasparilla is a very handsome boy. Hugs, J.B.

Good afternoon Zenny and all,
Today is my Zenyatta day. I was #1 and 2 posting and my beautiful Breyer Zenyatta arrived !!!
Cute pictures, Zenny.
May all have a blessed, joyful day. LOL, Arlene

Dandelions must be healthy for you. That was very thoughtful. Wish del mar had the same hours that Santa Anita does. I live so far away that I would have to stay overnight if I stayed for all the races at del mar. As it is, I drive an hour each way to Santa Anita, but at least I’m home for dinner the same day.

Hi Zenny and Dottie– I love the picture. The poodles are adorable! And Bronze Beauty is a hoot, getting her beauty sleep. Saving up energy for the next race. Thanks also for the heads up about dandelion leaves. I would have thought they were poisonous! So much to be learned here.
@DMCQ–you have more patience with computers than I have . I’m SOO glad we have you here. I loved your comment on the “brevity course”–TOO CUTE!
@JAG–already done. I did it on a different website, but I couldn’t get the “cut” feature before pasting here. AAUGH–computers!
@Denise in AZ–I’ll try that. I tried through my FB acct. yesterday, but it looked like it wanted to move all my acct. there, and I just wanted to look. Will work on it.
Barbara Wood
@Susan in TN–welcome back. I’ve been asking for you! Thanks for the update. This orning I mailed a little donation to River Edge, and in the note, I claimed to be a Z- friend of yours–hope that was ok.
Not a lot, but maybe will help with feed or dewormer, etc.
J Smith
Wish I could move into Barn 55!

@Susan in TN–Good to see you posting again. I feel like I know your charges from the way you describe them. Chester sounds like my kind of guy. Bless you for the work you are doing.
