Good Morning,
I think it is so special that ALL of you wanted to wish US a HAPPY BIRTHDAY on January 1st! TASTY and I were so busy…..we literally forgot to send wishes to each other! So, we took some time this morning to do that. As many of you already know, thoroughbred race horses have two birthdays… the actual one stating the day he or she was born that is recorded on his/her Jockey Club Papers….and then the ‘technical’ one which has ALL thoroughbreds celebrating a birthday and becoming one year older on January 1st of each year.
Thus, I am ‘technically’ 8 for industry purposes…..but I am still 7 per my real birthdate of April 1st. I must say, I do feel I look terrific, have maintained my glowing coat no matter what the weather conditions, and my body is still quite ‘fit’ and handling this ‘baby weight’ very well! Blush, Blush!
TASTY was born on March 26, 2006….so she turned 6 on the 1st. If our foals are cooperative, and are born ‘on time’…(they say first foals can be rather independent and do their own thing, so we’ll see)…then TASTY and I will both be MOMS before our actual birth dates.
In reading the DIARY comments, you are ALL becoming VERY ASTUTE at what is going on with our ‘in foal status’ and the foaling process. I was commenting to TASTY this morning that we are 2 very fortunate horses. Our foals are going to have about 180,000 feet pacing about in different communities around the country when we get ready to have our babies…and about 95,000 plus NANNIES!
LUCKY US!
On another note, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to each of you who may have celebrated a birthday over the holiday! Also, in reading the comments, I’m so happy to hear that so many of you who have had some health concerns or been dealing with them with members of your family are ‘doing better’. ALL BLESSINGS to you and your families!
Have a terrific day! Don’t forget….RAPID REDUX is entered today at Laurel in their 6th race…going for #22. I’m sending him a big HIGH HOOF and wishing him the best!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

A new year, a new site, and a new BABY just around the corner.
I love the new look of the Site/Diary, thank you Dottie, Tyler and Kyle.
Dottie I need to tell you…I’d come to this site regardless of the look and even if the news on Zenyatta was only provided in a conventional, business like way….but Dottie you have brilliantly “Beatrix Pottered” Zenyatta. Thank you for maximizing the splendor of Zenyatta, from racing legend to the hoofs that rock the cradle.
Alia Abu-Bakr
Happy Birthday Lovely Ladies!! I hope you had a beautiful racing birthday. Queen Z, I would love to send you and Baby Z a gift. Do you have a fan mail address?? If so what would you like?? And you too Tasty. Queen Z, I love you dearly. You are such a special gal. XO- Alia

The comment to Dottie was right on point. Absent your daily posts, Zenyatta would still be an amazing phenomenon, because of what she did for racing, and because of the hero she is and because of the special horse she is (when you meet her, you know this for sure). But you have made her phenom even bigger. It is over a year since she retired, and it has only grown, not waned.
Please keep making our hearts swell every day.
Brigid
I second this emotion!

I agree, both these great mares are so easy to love. They really seem to compliment each other. What a treat it would be to share a paddock with Zenny.

The new website has such a great look! I have to say that I prefer the white background to the black…for some reason it’s easier for me to read that way! You’re lookin’ good, Zenny! I hope all goes well during the remainder of your pregnancy and when baby Z is born! Happy New Year!

do not forget…..i would somehow manage to get there…should you need a “baby” nurse…and you should know that ALL BABIES ARE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING….they have resourses and reserves that us grown ups just dont understand…i always thought its because babies just do not know that they “cant”…so they go ahead and “do”…
you and your BFF tasty are looking super……keep warm and safe…kisses for both of your soft noses…some for the “soon-to-be” little ones too…love always

Dear Zenny,
Do you know who Tasty’s owners are and did she ever run @ the track? If so where and for what trainer? Also, did you see the latest article in the DRF about Lewis Cenicola? He fights on just like his beloved John Henry.
Enjoy the sunshine & lack of snow!

do not know who owner are….i believe she ran in canada…Tasty Tempation…i will do some research……should be able to find owners and trainers from that

Dan,
Tasty ran at Woodbine for owners Woodford Racing. She won the Wonder Where Stakes at 3 and [placed second in the Woodbine Oaks and La Lorgnette Stakes. At 4 she Won the Hill N Dale Stakes. Her life time record is 16-5-3-1 with earning of $542, 343…not sure who her trainer was.
And to whomever asked she is in foal to Candy Ride.
Joanna from TX
And just to add to the thread, I bellieve I read TT is owned by a racing partnership headed by Will Farish…of Lanes End, so Tasty is at ‘home’.

Shannon J; Thankyou for the info. I know I have read about Tasty; but at my age, I can not remember all I read!!!

Hi,
Rapid Redux did win the 6th Race at Laurel Park. It was a Starter for 4 year olds & up. 5 horses in the race. Wonder what owner Robert Cole, Jr. & trainer David Wells have planned for RR next?
We’ll have to wait and see.

—Canadian-born jockey George Woolf, known as “Iceman” for his coolness in the saddle, died of injuries sustained when falling headfirst from his mount, Please Me, during a race at Santa Anita Park the previous day. He was 35.
During his career from 1928 through 1946, Woolf had 3,784 mounts, 721 wins, 589 seconds, and 468 thirds, and purse earnings of $2,856,125. Since 1950, Santa Anita Park has annually presented the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award to a rider who demonstrates high standards of personal and
professional conduct, on and off the racetrack.

Thanks JAG for the look back in history. This past weekend I watched the Seabiscuit movie again and enjoyed seeing Gary Stevens playing George Woolf.
Here’s a line from the movie: George Woolf: [during the Match race, on the final stretch to War Admiral’s jockey] So long, Charlie.
The Kennedys in San Diego
And, of course, George Woolf was the original owner of the famous Derby Restaurant near Santa Anita. The restaurant still contains some of the memorabilia from that era although much was auctioned in Beverly Hills following the release of the Seabiscuit movie. We previewed the items to be auctioned. No, we were not the high bidders.
Dawn Conrad / Colorado
The Kennedys, I watched a show about the restaurant and it’s history which included some people who tell stories of having experienced evidence that the ghost of George Woolf is still there.

I ate at The Derby following Zenyatta’s BC Ladies Classic win – what a fantastic atmosphere!
Especially Horses / Southern California
I’ve never had the pleasure to patron the Derby Restaurant. It is now on my to-do-list for 2012.
Dawn Conrad / Colorado
JAG, great information about George Woolf. He holds such a special place in the history of jockeys. Our own wonderful Mike Smith was presented with the award in 2000 and Garrett Gomez was honored for 2011.
Terry Crow
I haven’t been to Santa Anita yet this year so I don’t know how things are arranged. Surely, Cynthia H would know the answer. The statues of George Woolf and Seabiscuit used to be aligned so that Woolf was always looking upon his old pal. As I recall, Laura Hillenbrand said something to the affect in her book that it would be that way as long as people care about horse racing. May it always be that way..
Sharon in Atlanta, GA
Wasn’t this the “Iceman” that rode Seabiscuit when Red was injured? I believe George rode the Biscuit against War Admiral in that much touted match race. Am I right about this?
Barb Guckert
To the person who asked about George “The Iceman” Wolffe yes he rode Seabiscuit to victory against War Admiral.
