Good Morning,
I guess BABIES are a very popular topic everywhere these days. At home, in California, MY JOHN and Dottie live very close to MY MIKIE….and they often run into each other when out in the community. The other evening, they happened to see each other at THE DERBY RESTAURANT. Mike arrived with some friends of his and then they all got together and visited.
MY JOHN just had to capture this photo to share with you. It is MY MIKIE playing with his friend’s baby, LELIA. It amazes ME how small human babies are. From what I’m hearing, MY FOAL will be approximately 125 pounds or so when born and up and walking around relatively soon after birth!
MY MIKIE asked about ME and wanted a complete update on how I am doing. He has been to the farm several times to visit ME since I’ve been in Kentucky and commented he can’t wait to see ME ‘running’ in the paddock with my first foal!
I AGREE! I CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS TO HAPPEN MYSELF!
I’d also like to thank TVG for doing an update yesterday ‘on my soon to be a MOM status’ for MY FANS. They visited with Dottie and shared so many of my racing and current photos…many from the DIARY! They even have a ‘countdown’ taking place on set monitoring the days until they think I’ll foal.
I must say, the next several days could be very exciting for several reasons. There are actually 2 BIG countdowns taking place….ME and the number of days until I foal….and MY MIKIE needing 7 more wins to reach 5000! Last night, he told MY JOHN he has several very ‘live mounts’ over the weekend….so HOOVES CROSSED!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

I don’t know how many of you are interested in pedigrees…but I’ve done one for our own Lady Z, and she’s got Man o War on both sides of it….Street Cry, her daddy, is 3 generations away from Hail to Reason through his sire, and Hail to Reason is 3 generations away from Man o War through his dam. Vertigineux is 3 generations from Wavy Navy through her dam, and Wavy Navy was a daughter of War Admiral, a son of Man o War….
I love this stuff…
PeggyOne
Camela, you don’t need to go through all that. Just go to http://www.pedigreequery.com/ and type in the name you want. simple and easy.
Have fun!
Joanna from TX
I like to dabble around with pedigrees too. Once upon a time, I traced lineage of one of my Afghan Hounds back to import from the middle east, but no records were kept there, so that was the end of that.
I’ve goofed around with an attempt to do some tracing of my pedigree (German and American Mutt), but my dad was adopted so can’t go anywhere with that either.
With the TB’s I’ve got print outs of some that I like to follow that take up 1/2 page. Then I can do my ‘match making’ just by pairing with whoever I’m looking at. I also try to highlite any duplicate names and look at those top and bottom.
It’s all just for fun!
Patricia/Far northern CA
I’m a pedigree tracer from way back, and it’s easy to lose oneself in tracing the “other lines” in a pedigree— the siblings, progeny, and so on. I do TBs, Arabians, and Salukis. Fascinating all across the board, and so many parallels!! The connections, far back, of Arabians in the TB breed; the Arabian hounds and horses with their parallel development and region of origin…. and some of the names pop up in each other’s history, too (people and horses, and now I’m seeing it in the hounds!).
My horses and hounds are all traced back to their desertbred origins… if I had a TB I’d have that one traced back as far as the records go too. Amazing the historic names that show up, and the stories that go with them sometimes. Just following a certain color or bloodline back into the 1700s… and photos or paintings when available…
Take a look at TT’s pedigree and follow back, you can see where that gray color comes from because all grays have to have at least one gray parent— and NO she is NOT a ROAN, which is a dumb rule (“gray or roan”) by the JC in my opinion, a horse CAN be both, but gray and roan are two different genetic effects and a horse could have overlays of both on a solid base (bay or chestnut) coat. Also possible to be a palomino (dilute chestnut) pinto etc. Well, not all of these on a TB but in general horse genetics.
Pedigrees and genetics are some of the unexpected side benefits of critter connections… and are both fascinating. That’s how we can be 100% sure Zenny’s foal will be a dark bay with minimal markings… whereas Rags To Riches has had a chestnut with bright markings from Giants Causeway (chestnut to chestnut is ALWAYS chestnut, ch is recessive) and I’d love to see what her other progeny, by sold bay horses, have looked like??? Wasn’t she bred to Sea the Stars?
Well, I ramble, it’s like that when one is waiting, killing time… take your time, dear Zenny, and when you and Baby ZB are ready we’ll see the reward for our patience.
Back to playing with my puppy….
Deborah Richman from So. Calif.
Very interesting! Thanks, Patricia!
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Rags’s second foal was a colt by Henry the Navigator. She had a 2011 colt by Galileo and was bred back to him for 2012.
It’s interesting that Rags’ first foal, her Giant’s Causeway daughter, had markings almost identical to her mother’s. I sure hope she makes it to the races. She chipped a sesamoid last year. Poor thing doesn’t even have a name yet.
You’re right about the Jockey Club being lazy about color. True roan doesn’t occur in TBs, as far as I know. One does find some dilutes and paints, Many of these are bred as sport horses or halter horses, though. Some are quite flashy.

Dear Laura J.:
Thanks for the update on Rags and, as usual, your always informative info on all things horses. Love and Hugs, JB

First time poster, but I have read every diary entry and laughed or cried with each one. Im a huge HUGE fan. My husband laughs at me when I give him the Zenyatta updates.
And Thank YOU Dottie, for giving us this amazing insight into her world. Zenyatta is too special to be hidden away on some farm.
I think Zenny will get her 100,000 Fans when she foals. There will be many people who will want to see the new royality take the first steps into history.
Stay calm, enjoy your peace now, pretty girl. Once your baby is on the ground, it will be non stop action!!
And I know this will never happen… WIth Zenyatta being toooo valuable as a broodmare, but wouldnt it be nice to see her in the show ring? That conformation, her movement. Her presence? Beauty in motion. Hunter under saddle? Dressage?
And has any of the grooms/Lanes ENd staff hopped up on her? JUST once?

Hi Jessica,
Welcome, I started posting just the other day and this is a wonderful group of people you are posting with! Enjoy and think PINK!!!!
Patricia/Far northern CA
Well, that “some farm” is Some Farm, indeed, where she gets the very best of care and attention befitting her status as Queen…. and because she is so precious to her owners.
And as to a Lanes End staffer “hopping up on her” — would need help getting up on her 17+ hands, and then both would be summarily SACKED. Against the rules, she’s not a riding horse, she’s a retired racing champion and her career now is to be a broodmare. I can think of TWO people who would be able to gain permission to ride her (when not heavy in foal): Mike Smith and Steve Willard. Period.
Still concerned about the bad weather, everyone stay safe!!
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
And I remember a post mentioning there was one other exercise rider, a woman at Barn 55, who asked and was granted her request to ride Zenny, before Z moved to Kentucky.
Marty R / Colorado
Vicki,
I think that was Isabelle who worked her when Steve Willard had hurt his back. John Shirreffs let her ride Zenny for her birthday wish then gave her a video of the ride as her present.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Yes, Marty, that’s right, I couldn’t recall the details. Thanks!
Patricia/Far northern CA
PS I’m not a grouch, really I’m not!!! Just a longtime horse person with years of practical experience and a passion for TBs and my own beloved Arabians.
Reminds me of a bit in the old “Music Man” musical— one of the musical numbers (“Trouble”) asks if “you’d like to see a stuck-up jockey boy sittin’ up on ole Dan Patch?” —- DP was a famous Standardbred of the early 1900s who won a lot and traveled around the country “taking on all comers” —- but was never RIDDEN. Just driven. My dad saw him when he was a small boy, and he was famous even back then before radio and TV and internet…
The liability of the farm if someone climbed up on Z and then something happened — tremendous. Z is worth millions on paper (insurance, etc.), but is priceless in our hearts… and to the Mosses, Shirreffses, Mike, and all the Barn 55 crew. And now to the Lanes End crew as well.
Hoping for a “bag report” tomorrow? I’m guessing March 5-9; but first-time foaling mares can pop them early or hang on for days after the nominal due date. Fantastic if we saw Z and TT babies arrive on the same day!

Hi Jessica,
I’m glad you finally decided to post. Part of the fun of this site is the different personalities, insights, and also the fun of verbalizing things many of us think but otherwise would have no other place to express them; and so many times a whole new line of conversation takes on a life of its own because of sharing a thought, a video, a memory, or a favorite book. So while it is unlikely, improbable, brazen, reckless, I still smiled at the thought of someone at LE’s sitting on her back for one quick moment. Which one of us wouldn’t love to do the same (under the right conditions)?
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
You got that right!

Welcome to Zennyland Jessica, it’s the most loving, crazy, supportive place you could be. As for “that farm”, it is home to Queen Zenyatta and has been known to host Queen Elizabeth II, home to royalty indeed.

You are just too cute, GF!!!! We are having so much fun, even if we can’t breath!!! I’ve heard that there has been a run on small brown paperbags in regions of the United States where Zenyatta fans live. Some other thoughts about when we will hear…
Folks trust me! I don’t know the plan but I can well assure that the announcement has already been crafted! All they have to insert is sex and weight!
I know Team Z knows how crazy we all are to hear (good crazy–not the bad kind). A lot will depend on timing and so forth. I’m certain that since John is up before dawn every morning as is Dottie that we will hear first thing in the morning if it happened during the night.
Likewise I’m certain that Dottie will make another diary entry if the birth happens during the day.
Please dont fret about this. After all of this you think Dottie would leave us in the lurch? I don’t think so! And the Moss’s equally are as kind and gracious as the Sherriff’s–they won’t allow us to go for long without hearing the news!

I’ve no doubt that Dottie will keep us informed…I hope it is early morning, not too many people here yet, and I do not know if I will be able to half way control myself, alot of people in my department know that I am doing the watch for Zenyatta’s baby and know the time is near…so if i faint or have chest pains, or something, I will have people here to help out.

Hi Zenny!
Before I leave for lunch – I just want to explain WHY I’m “wringing my hands”.
1) I never had children – so I do not know about “birthing” *-)
2) After watching the numerous videos of foaling, it only made me more nervous due to the possibility of “complications” – simply stated!
3) I know that you are in EXCELLENT HANDS – no doubt.
But, worry is my middle name, period!
XOXO
Raylene/ So Cal
I am with you JAG. I have not had any children and like you watching the foaling videos is making me nervous. But Queen Z is in great hands and I am sure TT is also.
Ingrid Arnone
I agree with you, because I am the same way, sometimes life is cruel, Ingrid.
Lisag in Texas
@JAG, I too, have never had children (human that is), but I was priveledged to see my first nephew be born, invited by my Sister-In-Law, out ranking both Grandma’s. It was the most beautiful and wonderful experience of my life, YET I WAS A NERVOUS WRECK. I did not beat out the grandma’s for my second Nephew’s birth, and glad I did not…he was not breathing and, and as my bro put it…silent, loud, confusing, nursing running around…all at the same time. Ms Zenyatta will not have any problems, She has a secure place from all of our prayers, stop the nail biting, knuckle cracking is better…that is what I am doing! LOL Lisag
Margaret
At the risk of being called grouchy you guys are making yourselves even crazier with all the hand wringing you are doing. All the pacing. And all the fretting.
I know Mother Nature can be cruel but please please don’t go there. We need to stay upbeat and positive.
I know you guys are scared. I can pretty much see that through the posts. Calm down! You are not doing yourselves any favors and when others come here they see folks about to melt down.
CALM DOWN! Okay?
Karen Gogue /Nanny-Granny in a Looney-Tune coma ♥
NAW, no one is really that scared Margaret. It is in the awareness of each and everyone of us, but just having fun and lightening up a little to wait for the blessed day! Thank you though for the great calming posts! Always top notch and informative! We all know what the reality is, really! And if we can laugh at ourselves while in the “wait” coma-mode to stay reasonable, so be it! ♥ We really ARE sane people and don’t take ourselves too seriously, if we did, we’d all be stuffed shirts with no life, AND NO FRIENDS! :)
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
I have to agree, Karen. When my mind starts jumping to the “worst-possible fears”, I sometimes remind myself that “magical thinking” is not real — that my thoughts don’t make things come true in reality, so it’s just my own internal nightmares talking, and not connected to anyone else. And actually, as Dottie has confirmed every day, Zenny is doing fine, all signs in the “green”, so to speak, moving toward the outcome we’re all awaiting.

I don’t agree that everyone is “scared.” It’s okay to be excited and look forward to the coming event. With all the negativity in today’s world, it’s a good thing that Zenyatta lovers have something to be excited about other than the election, the economy, gas prices ($4.27 in CA today), and increase in the price of products because of the increase in shipping costs. Before the birth of my son, my entire family was excited and there’s no way that they would have “calmed down” as the day was very near. When Prince William was born to Charles and Diana, the same type of excitement went on in the media before and after and to the people on this site, it’s pretty much the same type of celebration. I say let everyone be excited – at least we have a place like this site to express our excitement about Zenyatta’s first foal. She will never have another first foal. Let’s enjoy the heck out of it!

I too never had kids, and the foaling vids also made me a bit uncomfortable. And girlfriends have said they wanted their hubby “there” for the birth, partly to have someone to holler at about the pain! But the other side is that I was invited to be the first person to “meet” my friends’ son, in the hospital, the same morning soon after his had-to-have-caesarian birth. I found it awesome, and have always felt some primal “connection” to that boy, now a 23 yr. old young man. So in spite of my discomfort, I would go see her foaling “in a heartbeat”, except that it would not be the best thing for her.

Thank you, Mama Z, for the beautiful card. I was so excited to receive it and impressed that you have the time to write cards so close to your due date. I imagine it can be a rather long process when one does not have opposable thumbs. Some friends and I are throwing you a baby shower. We are going to donate money to rescues that specialize in helping nurse mare foals. These mares do a great service in helping other mares who cannot nurse their babies. But, it is sad that their foals are left without mamas. The rescues that help these babies must have special skills to work with such young ones. It can be very expensive and time consuming. We are looking forward to having a great time celebrating your bundle of joy, while making sure that other babies have joy in their lives, too.

Zen, did I mention that you give new meaning to the term “March Madness?” We usually refer to that with regard to college basketball, but now all of your fans are anxiously awaiting the arrival of your baby this month and it’s driving us crazy! ;) He or she will be the most anticipated foal of the century as far as I’m concerned. But any TRUE Zen fan knows that you do things in your own time, even if it takes awhile (like your many breathtaking come-from-behind victories)! I wouldn’t want it any other way!

MIKIE is hot no matter what he’s doing, even holding a baby! That would be AWESOME if you could have your foal on the same day MIKIE hits 5,000. Of course, being Irish, I would love for you to have a St. Paddy’s Day foal! I read an article yesterday that in general foals are arriving 2-3 weeks late this year. So maybe I’ll get my wish. Hooves crossed! :))) Cathleen XOXOX
