Good Morning,
It was so much fun having BRUNCH with all of you yesterday! We should do it again one day soon! I DO LOVE TO EAT!
I wanted to share a photo of my ’2 year old sister’ with you! EBLOUISSANTE is now at the training center in South Carolina. Here she is a few days ago…getting ready to go out and practice her lessons. Hmmm! I see some definite family similarities. I think I’d know those ears and hind quarters anywhere! I’ve lived with them myself for years. I guess we get these qualities from our MOM….VERTIGINEUX.
In the thoroughbred industry, very simply speaking, your family line as far as being a sister/brother (1/2, 3/4 relative etc.) is primarily recorded in detail through your mother. A MARE only has one foal a year as the gestation period is approximately 11 months. A healthy STALLION, on the other hand, may be bred to 60-100 or so mares each year….depending upon his popularity.
So when you are looking at a PEDIGREE PAGE for a foal (a history of the family)…it is basically traced through the MARE and HER OFFSPRING. In my direct family, my MOM has had several foals while owned by my breeder, MAVERICK PRODUCTIONS. In each of these cases, my MOM was bred to a different stallion….but what ties us together is the fact that we are all foaled (born) from the same MARE. Speaking on behalf of myself, in pedigree terms, ZENYATTA is BY STREET CRY out of VERTIGINEUX. When referenced in this manner….BY…means SIRE (Father of the foal/horse) and OUT OF refers to the MARE (Mother of the foal/horse).
Thus, on MY PEDIGREE PAGE, you would see the following in relation to my MOM. Listed right below her name, VERTIGINEUX, would be the following foals she gave birth to through 2009:
2002…WHERE’S BAILEY, b f, by Aljabr. (Year of birth, foal’s name, b…meaning color bay, f for filly and then by…and the stallion’s name)
2003…BALANCE, b f, by Thunder Gulch
2004…ZENYATTA, dkb/br f, by Street Cry ( dkb/br…means dark bay/brown in color)
2006…TREASURE TRAIL, b f, by Pulpit
2007…SOUPER SPECTACULAR, ch c, by Giant’s Causeway (ch for chestnut and c for colt)
2009…EBLOUISSANTE, dkb/br f, by Bernardini.
In 2005 and 2008, the mare did not have a foal. She has had some since…I just did not list them here.
A full brother/sister….would have the same MOTHER and FATHER.
Thus, when it is not a FULL…it can be a 3/4 or 1/2 brother/sister depending on the various pedigrees influences of the stallion. Thus, as you can see from this, I am not a FULL to any of these siblings….as my MOM was not bred back to Street Cry.
It never ceases to amaze me what a small world we actually live in. My breeder is listed as MAVERICK PRODUCTIONS and when I was purchased this is all my Team knew. All of the paperwork, pedigree pages, and my Jockey Club papers (birth certificate) all list my breeder this way. It was not until months later that any of us on my TEAM found out this was Mr. Kronfeld…a man Mr. Moss knew from the music business. They had not spoken in years…..so I was the one who reacquainted them through all of my racing accomplishments. This is so special!
Additionally, MR. COMMONS and MAKOMA, 2 of my friends from Barn 55…..who both WON this weekend at Santa Anita…..have an interesting ‘small world’ story. Mr. Commons learned his early lessons in South Carolina with Mickey Preggar….just like Eblouissante is doing now. Makoma was with Jeanne and April Mayberry in Ocala, Florida, during her training center days…just like I WAS! There are a number of training centers in our industry….but here we are…..sharing so many wonderful experiences with these two! This is such a small world! We are so fortunate!
Dottie said she’d check the files to see if John has photos of ME at 2…..at the training center….taken at the same stage as ‘E’ is now. Let’s hope! It would be so much fun to compare us at this stage of our lives. YEAH, MOM! This FAMILY THING is so much FUN!
Enjoy your day!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

why have they not bred to street cry again ?

@ Gary,
.
That question has been kindly answered by several posters numerous times above.

@ensign
I read the chestnut is from ages gone by when we were in the horse was created.Chestnuts vary in size and shape and are sometimes compared to the fingerprints in humans. For purposes of identification some breed registries require photographs of them among other individual characteristics. However, because chestnuts grow over time and horse grooms often peel or trim off the outer layers for neatness, their appearance is subject to change. age I believe. It is scale like and just left like a dew claw in other animals.

PS Not sure who asked the question lol

Thanks for sharing all this interesting information Zenyatta. And your sister is gorgeous and looks somewhat like you but not quite. Will be looking forward to seeing how she runs and if her strides will be as big as yours.
You are unforgettable!
Love & Blessings to you
Delrene
Your sister is a beauty too – it will be fun to watch her grow and mature into a fine racing filly. Thanks to you and Dottie on the informative thoroughbred breeding/family lineage lessons. I think it is so interesting. Have fun with your friends and stay warm. It is sunny, but chilly in Ca and the mountains have lots of snow.
Santa Anita Racetrack is really beautiful with the mountains in the background.
Christine
@Peyton take lots of pics to share with us. and have the best time.
Kiss the Queen for all of us and tell her we love her spirit.

My Sweet Lady Zenyatta, I love your post today! Your sister Eblouissante is beautiful too! Great photo!! You definetly favor each other was those fabulous hindquarters and the ears. I love the ears! They show alertness and focus. She looks like she is built for speed as well! I am thrilled beyond words that she will be given time to grow into her own as you were. This is so exciting to get to watch a relative of yours race! This morning, Zenyatta, I was hoping Dottie would do a family line on you. I’m doing ancestory.com on my family. How cool is that! The questions I had Dottie answered!!!@Mary Meek I like pedigree too and was glad to hear about a half sister of Zenyatta named Balance. I’ll be looking for her too! I thought of you when I heard the storms were coming and wanting to know if someone was with you talking to you to keep you calm? That’s what I have to do with 2 of my 4 dogs to let them know it’s ok just when it rains. Poor babies! I love you, Zenyatta and just want the best for you but now you’re expecting extra care is a must! I hope you have a wonderful night of rest and I hope you wake with the warmth of sunshine on your sweet face! You, P.Q. S.G & Alyss have a good time tomorrow. Sending Hugs & Kisses from Alabama With Love, Amanda G.
Dottie, you are a true Blessing for doing the posts. Thanks for all the work you put into them! I really appreciate them & you!

This little filly has some growing to do.

Eblouissante is a beauty at 2. Will be interesting to see how she blossoms as gets older. Definitley some similarities to Zenny. Will be wonderful to watch John work his magic wit Eblouissante. If she has even a fraction of Zenny’s talent, she will be a very good horse. Great information on pedigree, Dottie.
Rhonda Clements
She is a beauty, I think she looks more like your Mama, I read about her a few months ago but couldnt find a single picture of her, Glad to finally see her. Anxiously awaiting news about a little Zendini baby. I personally think you resemble your handsome daddy a lot and your brother street Sense but I think you are all gorgeous, and none more then you! So is John going to have your sister? and the Mosses?
Amanda Gilliland
@Peyton! Congratulations!!! That is absolutely wonderful. Please post what it was like to meet Zenyatta. I know that I may never get to meet her in person but I love hearing from people that do. I want to see photos too! Look forward Peyton to what you have to say!!

Hey big Z,
I’ve been waiting to see another picture of Eblouissante since they showed one of her on the 2nd day of the BC. She is very cute. I was wondering if she is owned by the same owners as Mr. Commons?
I love seeing all of John’s horses go to the winner’s circle, especially with Mike up. If all goes well with baby E, I hope Mike gets to ride her. John has so many other babies, I was wondering about JT Safe at Home and Maestro. Also wondering about Escadar. I believe she is 4 now, so are there horses that never get a try on the track if they don’t show potential or do they all get there as long as they are sound? So many questions. Tell Mom amd Dad good luck with Zazu on Saturday. By the way, you are adorable eating your pears. Can’t wait to hear if the stork will be visiting you!!! Be hearing from you soon big beautiful one.
Lori
Kendra
thanks for all of the wonderful information. Do you know if there is ever a time when they breed the same stud and mare together more than once?
HappyHarriet
Dear Queen Zenyatta, Pear Lover :)
.
I think it was Cheryl Heath who planned that delicious meal in honor of Zenyatta receiving the Secretariat award. Ms. Heath and Our Queen could put their heads together for future Sunday Brunch menus, don’t you think? Of course Pears, Apples and Carrots will be prominently and creatively featured!
.
Dear Zenny, how wonderful that you open your barn door wide, invite us in, and share your history, relatives, training, and the next generation. The Princess E, your sister, is such a beauty! On Bernardini’s Facebook Page, click Photos, then My Foals, then fourth down on the left you will see what appears to be a stunning picture of Princess E. Can’t stop looking at her because she looks like YOU. Royalty all the way!
.
QUESTION for the Diary Readers: How likely is it that Zenyatta would have twins? How is that handled in thoroughbreds? I can’t think of any twin foals from thoroughbred mares but surely there must have been. I did some checking on YouTube and there are some adorable videos of twin foals – it makes me wonder about our Queen.
.
It’s official. I now attend, with all of you, the Zenyatta School of Equine Studies with our Divine Dottie as Dean and Curriculum Advisor. Seriously, I have a notebook now by my side to jot down the rich info available from all of you. Thanks!
.
I found an old charm bracelet I’d forgotten about today and I made room for the addition of that beautiful “Z” pin/charm/pendant that we’ve admired so often. Dare we ask again about the progress on that? I have a birthday coming up and for sure I will treat myself to a pretty “Z” to represent the Queen, and another space for our yet-unnamed filly thoroughbred we recently decided to acquire. We aren’t naming her until we know her better. I think I remember Mr. Moss telling a story at the Eclipse Awards about naming the Queen with a name commensurate with her “aura”, and oh that’s so true! …saving a space for her initial, too!…
.
Lots of Love and Horse Hugs ~~ HH

@Kendra,
If they think the match is good yes. Look at Barbaro’s sire and dam. They have now been bred together a total of 6 times (including Barbaro).
Barbaro, Nicanor, Lentenor, Margano, Slipped Filly, 2011 foal yet to be born.

Hi Zenny: Thanks for the wonderful explantion on how to read the PEDIGREE PAGE. Now I have a better understanding. Never could follow it before. Your sister is very pretty. She will be at John’s barn in April. Well not too much pressure on her do you think!!!! You are a tough act to follow, Zenny!! I agree with the others, I hope she dances. I enjoyed having brunch with you too. Yes, by all means, let’s get together again soon.
@Peyton, wow, what a birthday gift you got!!! Lucky you. I hope all of us have a chance this summer to see Zenny. Take care, Zenny. Be sure to tell Dottie I loved this post.

@ Kendra,

There are lots of examples of full siblings in the Tb world. Man O’ War’s dam Mahubah was bred to Fair Play (Man O’ War’s sire) 5 times. Barbaro’s dam, La Ville Rouge has been bred to Dynaformer numerous times resulting in several full siblings. Multiple breedings to the same stallion happen all the time : )

@ HappyHarriet,

Twins are not totally uncommon in horses but Zenyatta would not willingly be allowed to carry twins. The equine body is not designed to carry more than one foal at a time and it’s extremely risky for the mare and resulting foals. Often one or both foals are lost.
Zenyatta will be scanned for twins several times during her early pregnancy checks. If she were to be found to be carrying twins, they would try and pinch one off (eliminate it) and hope that the remaining one would develop without incident.
Deneen
Dottie — you are SO AMAZING!!!!!! What a wonderfully informative post. Congratulations Mr. Commons and Makoma on your wins this past weekend — how awesome!!! Eblouissante is quite the beauty just like you Z!! Just curious — How many hands high was Z when she was that age? Is Eblouissante equal to or close to that height?

Dear Dottie,
Thank you so much for sharing Zs story about her sister…you are really helping me understand the thoroughbred industry!

@Cindy
Definately. Team Z visited “E” before they
Decided on their list of sires. Not everyone is able
To see their breeding possibility. No one knows what
The Rachel/Curlin will look like.

@Happy Harriet,
ENSIGN has provided good information about twins in equines.
While there may be cute video of twin foals on You Tube, it is truly much too great a risk to both mare and foals, with a very low survival rate. Foaling one foal can be unpredictable and dangerous enough on it’s own.
Let’s just keep good thoughts for Zenyatta to carry and deliver a singular healthy, strong foal in the beginning of 2010. :D
Celeste
Thank you once again for a beautiful photo and an incredibly written, informative and entertaining diary post. That Dottie and Zenyatta team up to create such wonderful entries and articles for us is so amazing and I feel such gratitude for being here, for being a part of this atmosphere, this fun place that is Zenyatta’s Diary. Thank you so very much!

Hey Zenny, First I wanted to tell you my good new. Remember I told you before I had some bad news just over a year they found a small tumor on my mammogram and it was cancer. Well last year they removed the tumor and I went through a year of surgeries including reconstruction.(I was very blessed as I did not have to have Chemotherapy or radiation) but still it was a small cancer.Long story short I went for my 1 year check up-2nd 6 month check up today. Zenny and everyone please have a glass of Champaign with me (or Zenny in your case Guiness’s) My Dr. came in to see me this morning The first words out of his mouth were Peggy All Tests Wonderful……Zenny he said all Wonderful… He said you do know how blessed you are don’t you and I said yes yes I do. He sounded like everything looked really good. I know i’m still not out of the woods, but I sure will take all these days. I don’t have to go back for 6 months. Just wanted to share this. Your sister Eblouissante Zen she is just beautiful, you know how I was telling you I just love the Black horses. Your sister E she looks almost Black especially her mane. I have to learn how to paste and copy, but for anyone that would like to see a glimpse of the horse that I like so much in the New Adventures of Black Beauty Go to Google ask for Informatin on the horse Black Beauty…On that first page there go into Video’s for inmormation on the horse Black Beauty. Click to Ride A Black Horse 1,2 and 3. I would sure love to have a horse like him. He is a beauty to behold. I do want another horse or two when I have the time to look after them. Oh I forgot Black Beauty this series takes place in New Zealand. I’ll go for now Zenny, Love you very much. Peggy

Finally, Eblouissant has been allowed in the media. For several months now many of us have tried to find info on her which was sparse. Any other horse connected to ‘Z’ seemed so exciting! Had read she would go to John soon. Please keep us updated. You have drawn so many new people to this grand sport with knowledge and education. Thank you.
lizzy
@Peggy-so happy to hear of the good news. Positive thoughts coming your way for a very healthy year. :)

Questions for the experts.
How many years does a horse continue to grow?

@Jan
Don’t know if this is Eblouissant official website, but it looks like it was created just recently. A few pics as well.

@Laura J: Read your post regarding why Vertigineux won’t be bred to Street Cry. If true so disheartening that pettiness is over-ruling common sense. On the flip side, I bet these two juggernauts never dreamed that their Hatfield-McCoy idiocy, which normally would have been only an “Industry Know”, has now gone cyber and quickly becoming general public knowledge.
