Q:
I have a question about the colts and fillies that are newly weaned. I understand that 12Z is in with a group of buddies right now and that one of them is a filly. Yet I thought colts got put with colts and fillies were kept separate, so there are no rivalries. My guess is that much like kids, at very young ages they don’t really “recognize” the difference. Am I right, and when does that start to change? Or does it completely depend on the personalities of the individual horses? And for that matter, when do the colts have to be in separate paddocks? At what ages do those separations need to start happening?
Julie Malida
Arlington Heights, IL
A:At this stage, the weanlings are mixed and not separated by gender. We will not separate them until later in the year. They don’t have a real understanding of their sex yet and mix well together at this point. Although you will see stronger tendencies of gender in some of them, to be honest some of the girls can be tougher than the boys at this stage!
Once we separate them they will stay in large groups until next spring when we start prepping for the yearling sales. The yearling fillies are always able to stay in a group, as they tend to be less boisterous with each other. The colts that are to be sale prepped are separated into individual paddocks at the start of the preparation period. Their paddocks are all adjacent to one another so this doesn’t really bother them too much. The “keeper” yearling colts will stay together, albeit in smaller groups, until they are shipped to the training farms where they will be broken in prior to joining their prospective trainers. This tends to be in the fall of their yearling year.

Dear Lanes End and Team Z,
Just love the photo of 12 Z in his “herd” of boys and girls.
He still perks up when he sees the camera just like his mom.
Looks like he has really blended in and is a member, which I know
his mom gave him the skills to “get a long with others”..
This photo is TOO CUTE !!!
Thanks so much Alys for keeping us sooo well informed and uptodate.

Comments regarding stopping antibiotics are only related to what can happen after.
They have to be stopped at some time and they are being appropriately stopped at the end of the course (number of dayS) and the horse has no fever for a number of day. THERE WERE NO NEGATIVE COMMENTS REGARDING THE VETS, JUST MEDICAL KNOWLEGE.
PLEASE DON’T INFER NEGATIVE ASSUMPTIONS WHEN THEY ARE NOT THERE.
Antibiotics are prescribed for a specific number of days, when that course does not work they try another course or another antibiotics. No one knows other than the vets how many antibiotics they have used and for how many days. THE MORE ANTIBIOTICS USED AND THE LONGER THE NUMBER OF DAYS THE MORE CRITICAL IS THE INFECTION.
There is a physiologic response when antibiotics are stopped in a horse with soooo many complications and it is call defervesence, which means the fever may come back
tomorrow or in a number of days and they have to look again for something.
GirlSaratoga
Sign:
I am with you stopping the antibiotics? If “our guy” starts running a fever they have to figure out why all over again, seems a little risky, so the only thing I can think of if this….. Is maybe they have gotten the colitis and laminitis under control and want to see if his fever will no longer be an issue? I don’t know, maybe the Vets are afraid the antibiotics could be masking additional issues or problems? I just hope and pray “our brave fighter” is finally on the slow road to recovery. I will continue to pray and lite candles for him, he certainly deserves that.
I can’t believe FLF is a Silver Charm baby! He was one of my ALL time favorites! I am so happy she finished in the money, wish I did! I had FLF and RS exact box! (second and forth doesn’t quite cut it!!!!) I looked at BC, but went with RS instead, my original “gut ” feeling! Congrats to you!

Thanks for the story and link about Dyna King aka “Gifted” I am so happy he found a safe and loving place to heal, and an angel in Judy, he certainly deserves it. It still amazes how an owner or owner’s could or would allow such horrible neglect or abuse go on , and then just throw him away. Thank God he is in a loving and caring place, where his physical and emotional needs are being met.

Love FLF and Silver Charm, too. Sorry you did not win any money, You got that Exacta, though and won more than most of us. What a great team.
They have to stop antibiotics because he had a full course and see what happens.
That is the way medicine goes. Just commenting that things could arise again,

Obituary: Judy Maas’ filly won big at Churchill Downs
Article by: PAUL WALSH , Star Tribune Updated: September 8, 2012 – 5:49 PM
A childhood passion inspired Judy Maas to own and race horses at some of the America’s greatest racetracks: Santa Anita, Oaklawn, Hialeah and even Churchill Downs, home to the Kentucky Derby and the Yankee Stadium of thoroughbred racing.
Maas, who learned to ride as a child in Edina, died Aug. 31 after her recent diagnosis of throat cancer. She was 72.
Judy Maas’ crowning achievement as a horse owner came in May 1992, when filly and longest of long shots Luv Me Luv Me Not narrowly won the $280,700 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs before nearly 80,000 fans. The Maases’ take of the purse was more than $180,000.
Luv Me Luv Me Not “was the best horse we ever had,” Skip Maas said. “She was a campaigner.”
Judy Maas’ father was the late Bill Boyer, a Twin Cities auto dealer and one of the five founding owners of the Vikings in 1960.

Sheena: Glad to her that Snow came out of the race okay. She really put in a very fine performance. Dettori was quoted as saying that she is as popular as Kauto Star. That is a great compliment. Let us know where she goes next. I see that Chachamaidee also won for Henry Cecil at Leopardstown at the group 1 level, another victory denied to Aidan O’Brien. Bobby Frankel always had great success with fillies as a trainer. These girls doing their best are helping to protect his record. LOL!

Now I am curious I am going to look it up and see if Bodega Bay is a real place.

Hi all,
Playing catch up again, because we went down to Milwaukee for our grandsons wedding. It was great fun but I’m exhausted, have to get ready because Sally B and hubby are coming up this weekend. I’m going to install a revolving door pretty soon!
Vicky B your redneck letters were just hysterical, laughed my — off!! You’re filling in the big gap TC left.
Terry C hope this bad news has a hidden blessing for you, don’t know the details but someone as nice as you can only come out ahead.
Peggy N, if you get down to the Keeneland sales buy me an Indy kid, I’ll pay you back as soon as I can, Ha,ha. If you get to see my beloved INDY at LE give him a big smooch from me right on that white blaze on his nose. You, Sign, and I are his biggest fans here!
Sign, thank you for that article in Thoroughbred Times what a wonderful tribute to our special sire, he’s got quite a record of Champions. I’ve got to put that new filly “Dreaming of Julia” in my virtual stable so I can watch her…..wow she’s sounds like quite the gal.
Keeping my fingers crossed and praying every nite for our boy Paynter, it has just been such an up and down ride you are afraid to get too excited about a little good news.

Sue, we still have to buy Havre De Grace. Don’t We? I think maybe she comes up for sale in Nov.
Sue Fredrick Co-P WI Chapt.
Peggy N,
Unfortunately I’ve only won $24.00 in my fantansy capping, ha, ha, at this rate it will take forever. Did you get any others on board while I was gone? It would definitely take a whole community to do it unless we could pull a Mr. Zayat in. OMG I just had the most scathingly brilliant idea…….Michael Phelps wants to get into racing with Bob Baffert. If they chipped in we could buy HDG and breed her to Bernardini and Michael would have his derby horse!!!!! BRILLIANT isn’t it?
Well I’m not just another pretty face ya know, ha, ha. Now how could we suggest this to MP and BB?
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Love your plan Sue F. Great one and I am sure Michael would love it
to as it would mean $$$$$$.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Yes, Sue that is a brilliant plan. There are definatley others here that want to chip in. Debbie, I believe Darlene. Listen I’ll have to think of all the names Lots have mentioned it here. Listen Debbie should tell you about her plan too. She wants to buy a farm that is for sale next to Lane’s End. We could get Sheik Mohamed to help and we could sneak into Lane’s End to see Zenny and Zl2 and put Havre De Grace on the farm that we along with Sheid Mohammed buy. See Shiek Mohammed already owns Bernardin so both these plans are terrific. Debbie wanted to know who’s going to call them to get them to help us??????????????

Peggy n & Sign, had to reply here as the permalink wouldn’t let me in above. A farm in Kentucky, OMG, I’d cut the grass with a scissors if I had to just to live on it……..brilliant idea, does she have an “in” with the shiek? It’s perfect, then we could talk to Michael about boarding HDG there, ha, ha, if women ruled the world life would be so much simpler!! I’m thinking of having a garage sale if I can get my act together this fall, maybe I can raise some more revenue. Maybe those on the blog that are interested could organize bake sales or leomonade stands, how about a “chili dump”? Lets toss this around. Hugs
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Sue these sound like wonderful ideas and we have a couple of months left to plan. Us Zesters can do it…………………………
Actually it was Debbie’s idea to buy the farm. She says there’s two for sale next to Lane’s End. And my idea to get Shiek Mohammed involved.
Your idea to get Michael Phelps involved.
I think these ideas are brilliant.
Everybody other ideas are very welcome.

I bet Havre De Grace is depending on us. LOL

Sooo very true Sue.
The Shiek has money to “burn” may be he would help us.
We just need to find an attractive angle for him to invest.
Maybe TC, when he returns could help with that.

Peggy, maybe we could talk to Kobe Bryant, too. I know he bought a racehorse not too long ago, so he may be interested. Maybe we could buy one of the last A.P. Indy foals at the Keeneland sales AND Havre de Grace! (Hey, if you’re gonna dream, dream big!)

Spruce Meadows unveiled a statute to Hickstead, after which Eric Lamaze announced that he is taking a break from competition until 2013. He withdrew from today’s competition because he said that the course was too difficult for his horses, and he did not want to risk their welfare. There were some nasty spills and a few refusals.

Paynter continues to improve gradually today he is having a great day in fact he had an excellent weekend. He is stable his temperature has been totally normal for the last 36 hours.
He is eating well. He likes his new grain , his protein level is stable.
His Edema continues to gradually improve. His manure is soft, his feet are very comfortable
All in all a very positive and upbeat report from his angel Dr. Laura. Paynter has served us notice, I WILL BEAT THIS.
He is brave and courageous and total class. He is a super horse, He is the toughest horse in America. #steelhorse

Paynter is tough….very tough….and horses can fight and come back…
Example….late 70’s…very tough horse got fever sweats diarrhea…wobbly….owners feared for his life…but he was tough….fought back …trained back….won more races to go along
with his TC…Seattle Slew….
not saying P is SS….just saying tough horses can win at life as well as races
Louise Castello
Carol, I just love this!! Seattle Slew is my favorite, favorite of all times!!! He came as close to dying, or worse, than Paynter! Didn’t his daughter, Landaluce, die from the same thing very suddenly? It was discussed in the forum, but I forgot if it was the same thing SS survived and that Paynter had or something different.
Max
Louise. Slew was definitely his own horse. He marched to his own beat and he knew that he was special. He was like a king among equines.

Slew had a viral condition …..as did Landaluce …she was poss his best daughter or could have been…..5 races won by over 26 lengths total….prepping for 6th when virus struck….took her in days…reported she died in her trainers arms…jockey devastated….buried at Hollywood Park….one report of her races stated she glided over the ground softly like she was flying..
do not knowcif Paynters illness identified yet

Fond memories of Zenyatta’s family
By Glenye Cain Oakford Posted 8/5/2010, 1:53 pm
LEXINGTON, Ky. − It’s fitting that Don Robinson was the first human to put a hand on Zenyatta. As owner of Winter Quarter Farm, where the great mare was foaled on April Fool’s Day in 2004, Robinson has handled three generations of Zenyatta’s family for breeder Eric Kronfeld, starting with Zenyatta’s granddam, For the Flag, in the mid-1980s.
What Robinson remembers most about Zenyatta’s birth is that he was nervous about it.
“I was kind of concerned about it, because she was a big mare,” he said of Zenyatta’s dam, the towering Kris S. mare Vertigineux. “I was more anxious than I was for most foalings.”
Vertigineux tended to produce large foals, always a worry for breeders because they can cause tears and other complications.
Robinson, 62, needn’t have worried; Zenyatta’s arrival was uneventful. Her career, by contrast, has been anything but. Looking back over the 25 years he has known her family, Robinson says he and Kronfeld knew there was good quality in Zenyatta’s bloodlines.
Today, Vertigineux is a broodmare of the year, the dam of a champion in Zenyatta and a multiple Grade 1 winner in Balance. But on April 1, 2005, Kronfeld and Robinson’s faith in Vertigineux hadn’t been borne out yet in past performance lines and win pictures.
Keta Note: Yes, this is from 2010. But, so much good stuff thought it worth sharing again.
Hava a great Monday!!

Thank you Keta. Very enjoyable.

Keta. Great article. Z does everything so casually that one tends to forget how difficult these things are. Same for V. If a horse is a broodmare, there needs to be a great deal of cooperation on the part of the horse to take of herself before the birth and to look after the foal later. V set the standard, and Z has more than lived up to it, a great family of fillies and mares. Looking forward to see E race.

Thanks, Keta. I’m looking forward to reading that article later, when I get home from work. Anything “new” about Z, V, and E is great.

Sheena and Z fans. I found this video of Kauto Star on his vacation with his buddies. It is nice to see these great jumpers having a holiday. It reminds me of pictures of Z with her first friends at LE.
Paul Nicholls, the trainer, parades the horses though the nearby village of Ditcheat when the horses win their races. Everyone comes out to see them walk by. The horses also seem to like the attention. They are all great hams when the cheering starts.

Paynter Update: Mon. Sept. 10. More Great News!
A. Zayat tweets 6 minutes ago at 8:50 am Pacific time
Paynter Update: We continue to be blessed by a special horse, he continues to defy the odds.
We have a happy horse today, no fever, all blood work is good. He is comfortable stable and eating well. His protein level is good all in all looks like painter continues to turn the corner and winning his battle with his colitis.
On his fight with his fight with his laminitis, Let me explain more in detail…
Paynter has 3 of his legs with casts to support his feet. He has no had any rotation at any point since the start of his illness in any of his feet. None of them have shown any sinking ever since the beginning of his diagnosis. It is fair to say that we caught a very mild laminitis in the first stages. We have taken today for the first time new sets of x rays on his 3 feet since he has been in the casts since last Sunday. Dr. Laura was extremely happy to see that there was no radiological changes from last week in fact there has been much improvement from the way his feet looked before being in the cast.So she feels very hopeful and encouraged that if we continue to have comfortable feet and we feel blessed that this courageous Paynter, not only beaten colitis but he has a very good chance of beating laminitis.
Miracles can happen; I am very heartened and encouraged that not only Paynter will survive as a stallion but in 10 days when his casts are off. We can be in for a surprise that we have a chance of seeing him back as a racehorse in 2013.
Please god answer our prayers. I feel today like dancing and crying but this time out of happiness. #warrior #champ #special

There was one very interesting tweet following the Monday morning updates.
It is from A. Zayat to Justin Zayat.
I am not going to try to interpret it-just sharing
A.ZAYAT @JustinZayat #poweruppaynter I hope we didn’t jump the gun!!!
Max
Keta. Not so good? We’ll see soon enough.

Max,
First, want to let you know that I have been reading & really appreciate your posts. This weekend was a pop in and check and pop out time.
Thanks for the updates on Beezie & happenings at Spruce.
Also, you are our guru of the international scene.
Depend on you to keep me informed & on track :) with the horses & races over there.
Here’s what I thought when I read Mr.Zayat tweet.
This has been such a long struggle he is almost afraid to look into the future at where Paynter will be in 6 months or a year.
So, what I think he is saying it that he said what he was thinking but maybe should have held back a little. Just a thought
Hugs, Keta

Keta. Beezie did really well at Spruce Meadows on very tough courses. She won the Suncorp Cup, and was a close second for the $1 million CN title. The horse who won is called Cabrio van de Heffinck. He looked like Tasty Temptation, and kind of acted feisty like her too. Last year Hickstead posed quietly during the awards. Cabrio was having now of that. He was moving all over, thrilled to win, and letting everyone know it.

Why wouldn’t they retire him if he has a full recovery..!!!

Excellent! Thanks Keta
