Q:
I have a question about the colts and fillies that are newly weaned. I understand that 12Z is in with a group of buddies right now and that one of them is a filly. Yet I thought colts got put with colts and fillies were kept separate, so there are no rivalries. My guess is that much like kids, at very young ages they don’t really “recognize” the difference. Am I right, and when does that start to change? Or does it completely depend on the personalities of the individual horses? And for that matter, when do the colts have to be in separate paddocks? At what ages do those separations need to start happening?
Julie Malida
Arlington Heights, IL
A:At this stage, the weanlings are mixed and not separated by gender. We will not separate them until later in the year. They don’t have a real understanding of their sex yet and mix well together at this point. Although you will see stronger tendencies of gender in some of them, to be honest some of the girls can be tougher than the boys at this stage!
Once we separate them they will stay in large groups until next spring when we start prepping for the yearling sales. The yearling fillies are always able to stay in a group, as they tend to be less boisterous with each other. The colts that are to be sale prepped are separated into individual paddocks at the start of the preparation period. Their paddocks are all adjacent to one another so this doesn’t really bother them too much. The “keeper” yearling colts will stay together, albeit in smaller groups, until they are shipped to the training farms where they will be broken in prior to joining their prospective trainers. This tends to be in the fall of their yearling year.

We heard the anouncement over the intercom in our office. The news was running. I went out for lunch and found a restaurant with a TV and watched the film on both hits of the towers. I just sat there, numb. Over the passing days, it became one of the most devastating things I have ever witnessed. I felt the vulnerability of our country because we had been attacked on our continental homeland. I remember so well the sight of the people running down the streets of New York with fear and panic on their faces. I remember the legendary courage of the police and fire men as they worked ceaselessly to try to save as many people as they could and going into those wrecked buildings looking for survivors. And now, people dying from cancer as a result of the toxic materials and gasses that were present. Don’t complain going through airport security, they’re trying to keep all of us alive.

I remember 9/11 like it was yesterday. I remember everything about that tragic day on an almost minute to minute basis, as well as the weeks which followed. RIP those whose lives were lost, and peace to those who lost loved ones, to those who worked so hard to help others and to all of us who lived through those terrible days. We will never give up our way of life and we will never forget that day.

I was on a business trip, staying at the Hyatt Regency inside the Orlando International Airport. We were in our meeting when the hotel manager walked in, made the announcement and asked us to please all gather in the hotel lobby. There were big TV screens on and since we were not allowed to return to our rooms we just sat, stared at the screens, cried and raised our fists in anger. We were not allowed to leave the hotel and not allowed to return to our rooms until each room was searched by a bomb dog. The entire airport was evacuated EXCEPT for the people staying at the Hyatt. . If anyone is familiar with the Hyatt at the Orlando airport you know that it has an open air lobby that overlooks the terminal. How strange it was to be in a deserted terminal, with only soldiers, police offers and their dogs. We could see the rail transport cars circling the terminal with no people, the Terminal Departure Boards were lit up with CANCELLED, CANCELLED, CANCELLED, CANCELLED, CANCELLED, for every flight. Very late in the afternoon we were allowed to return to our rooms. Of course our weeklong meeting was cancelled too. Later that evening a small group of us walked the empty airport looking for food, haha. All the stores and eating establishments were closed. We found one restaurant that was not really open, but the Manager and a few of his employees were there. When we explained our situation and how we were not allowed to leave the hotel he fixed us dinner. The next day people were allowed to check out. Home was California and there were no planes flying and at that time no one knew when they would start flying again. One of my co-workers decided he would drive home to Texas. Long story short, I drove with him to Texas…18 hours nonstop….he dropped me off at DFW, I walked into another empty airport, but they were just beginning flights again. I said “I’ll take any flight to anywhere in Southern California. Within 30 minutes I was the ONLY passenger on a flight to Long Beach, CA. My brother picked me up from the airport. When we saw each other we cried.
I know this is getting long, but here’s a side story. It just happened that before I left on my trip, I had asked a neighbor to please go to our local Shelter and put my name in a drawing for a certain kitten. She had come to my attention the weekend before my business trip and she was going to be given to someone on Tuesday, September 11. Since I was not going to be in town my neighbor graciously agreed to stand in line, enter my name and hope for the best. As it turned out, due to the circumstances that morning, only my neighbor showed up for the drawing and I got my kitten! Since I got her on 9/11 and we really don’t know her true birth date, 9/11 has become her birthday….Happy 11th Birthday sweet Nala.

@ Marty R in CO-I was trying to find out about Hip 115 too! Kept trying yesterday–didn’t know he had been pulled. He was SO cute and had the cutest and most unusual white mark on his forehead! He seemed to like the camera too!! Hope to be able to follow him one day.
I watched a lot of the 9/11 service before work–what a terrible day that was!!! I still love catching a glimpse of the towers in older movies–especially the night shots. I always thought they were so beautiful!! I was on the top of them once on a clear day and it was amazing!! I was nervous going up and down in the elevators. Once, when I flew into New York, the pilot flew right past Lady Liberty, over the towers and right up the island before circling for the airport!! Quite a thrill.
Impossible to believe we lost so many souls all at once–and all those brave first-responders!I pray nothing remotely like it is ever visited upon us again!! My prayers to all who suffered losses that day.
My prayers, too ,for all are going through the sale at Keeneland. May they find loving new owners who will use the Mosses as their models and give them the lives they deserve!
Sent off a donation to Marlene from Barnaby to help some more Quarter Horses toward a safe new life. Hope we all got our money in in time to save this latest group. I really think that Barnaby knows that he had a narrow escape. He had to notice the truckloads of animals, packed to the gills, leaving the feedlot! I still marvel at the sight of him, standing at the fence to greet me when I pull up in the car. He is so majestic and so filled with self-confidence these days. I think his days of worrying are over and he really knows he is home.I think he really heard me when I told him I knew that I really didn’t OWN him,how can anyone really own such a magical and free spirit as a horse, but, rather, that he allows me to be HIS!! He is getting me nicely trained!!

I was disappointed to find out that Life is Sweet’s colt had been pulled out of the sale, but, maybe their owners decided to keep him and I think that would be good. Anyway, I agree. I hope we can follow him some day.

I was seeing patient in the transplant clinic and went out into the waiting room
to see the first plane strike the first tower. Everyone in the waiting room was agast.
Shortly after the second plane struck the second tower and I thought their was something wrong with the pilots in the plane. Never suspecting terrorism.
My boss came down from the OR and we talked and started seeing all the patients.
Every one of the patients was devastated, despite their severe medical problems, with the happening of the morning and finally it came out that it was Terrorism.

Remembering 9-11
I still work in NYC. Every day I walk by the World Trade Center and watch as they rebuild this location. But today it was different. As I looked out toward the site, I remember what that day was like 11 years ago today. Eleven years ago today, I worked in the World Financial building, which was directly across the street from the WTC. I heard the first plane hit and saw the shadow of the second plane before it hit the second building.
It was a horrific day, as close to 3000 fellow Americans lost their lives. As I walked by that site today, I thought to myself–No, We Will Never Forget!

Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Wow! You miss a few days, and it’s almost impossible to “catch up.” Looks like there has been a lot going on here (and that’s just from today – I’m reading backwards). Had a short but nice trip to southern Ontario, and a large part of the fun was spending an afternoon at Ft. Erie racetrack with Brenda S. Despite a very threatening weather forecast, we didn’t see a drop of rain and although there sure was a nip of fall in the air, we had a great time. It was amazing to see the action “live” after all of this watching on TV or the internet, and Brenda is a wonderful guide. We got to sample one of the local restaurants and have a look around her “neck of the woods.” It’s very pretty country, and I’ve never seen Lake Erie from the north shore before!
I’ll add my thoughts and prayers for today’s remembrance of 9/11. Just like everyone else, I remember exactly where I was and how I found out, and I imagine that is firmly etched in everyone’s memory. It’s hard to believe that it was 11 years ago, and I don’t think anyone can comprehend the enormity of what we lost that day. Glad to be back among my Z friends and hope to be up to speed soon.

Sandy,
It’s good to have you back, but very happy you were able to take a short trip. Are you even more excited now for BC since you’ve actually seen horse races in person?
I also remember how I found out about the tragic happenings on 9/11/01. I bought some magazines devoted to everything from that day and have saved them for my future great grandchildren. Grandson is 21 and granddaughter is 19 so great grands are probably a ways off yet. Anyway, it was a day and time in history and we lived through it.
You’re right. A lot happens in Zenyatta Nation daily. It’s such a good place to be a part of.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Hi Marty,
Yes – getting very excited about the BC although it will still probably be more of a “people event” for me than a “race event.” However, this was a great introduction to being at a “real” track – I had no idea how BIG it really is (and thus the TV screens so that you can see what’s happening when the horses are over on the other side). We also made a brief visit to the paddock which was also cool (having seen all of those videos of Zenny and others walking around in the paddock before a race). My ability to get around is still very limited (I had very kind people with me) which is another thing causing some trepidation about the “race” aspect, but . . . I’m still hoping for some type of miracle turnaround before November.

Seabiscuit, Model T’s & Georgia racetracks! A fun read
All because of Seabiscuit
Posted: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 4:39 pm
by RONNIE JOHNSON |
During the Depression, horse racing became a popular pasttime in Emanuel County. Farm families would pie into whatever vehicle that had enough gas in the tank and power under the hood to get them to the race tracks spread across the state of Georgia.
Horse racing began to catch the attention of folks in Emanuel County because an unlikely race horse burst onto the scene and schoked the racing world with unlikely victories. His name was Seabiscuit.
He did not come from a champion’s bloodline. His legs were uneven and wobbly when he ran. His coat was coarse and rough. He was not sleek and handsome as other racehorses have been. He wasn’t much of anything to look at or admire, but man, oh man could he run.
People crowded around radios, peering into the sound box. “And down the stretch they come, Seabiscuit is last, but moving up.” The announcer’s voice thundered over the air waves. People were so excited that they fell bakcwards in their chairs and hit the floor. Seabiscuit had won the California Stakes at the wire.
Seabiscuit became known as the people’s horse. He had risen above his expectations and had captured the world’s attention. He had brought back “hope” to people who had no money, no jobs and very little to look forward to. The depression years had cast a dark cloud over Emanuel County and the rest of the world. Seabiscuit was their beacon of hope.

I wish you all the best of luck. Just come on over a little further and you’ll be in Georgia. We have very very little snow here in South Georgia. Acutually if we ever get any its just a few flakes.. I have a friend that lives in Michigan (she is originally from here in Ga) Lived in Colorado before moving to Michigan. But she and her hubby are just itching to get back down here. Her mom just passed away last year and they are redoing her home to move here when her husband retires. I don’t know if she’s going to make it though till retirement . She’s down here every 3 or so months checking on the house remodeling. I think she’s going to be here sooner rather than later.
We do have one thing here in the South Georgia area though, that will just drive you crazy or it does me. Those pesty little knats. They will bug you terribly when outside in the summer There not as bad in North Georgia. They use to not be this bad. Some say its the huge amounts of produce that they are working with now here and in Florida.

Paynter Update: Paynter continues to take big strides towards a healthy recovery.
He had another great day yesterday
No Fever, Blood work great, Feet comfortable and walking sound on them.
Enjoying his new variety of goodies and hay that he has been given. Went out again yesterday for grazing and play time
All in all Dr. Laura is very happy with his progress. Paynter has an amazing desire to beat all odds He continues to fight real hard and he is winning. In fact, I am getting really upbeat about his total prognosis for a full recovery.
I was very happy after my call with Dr. Larry Bramlage. We sent him x rays of Paynters feet for his review and 2nd opinion. Our conversation made me very hopeful. He confirmed to us what other vets have told us that the x rays look great, that there is no sign of rotation or separation or sinking in his feet in fact, he was very encouraged and “pleasantly surprised” by those images. He told me that he believed based on what he saw that if the colt continues to improve there is no reason why he shouldn’t return to a full recovery as a racehorse in his opinion that he has all chances to race again at top notch level.
Continue to pray for a speedy recovery for the peoples horse!

Keta Question: Could a dropped rein have anything to do with a dropped jockey?
My first thought when I read the Game on Dude change.
HORSE RACING: Dullahan runs past Game On Dude to win Pacific Classic

DEL MAR – The results of Sunday’s Pacific Classic are not in dispute: Dullahan won, Game On Dude beat rival Richard’s Kid out of second, and all three ran faster than the old track record for 1 1/4 miles.
But the reasons are up for debate by the 34,482 fans who watched the $1 million race at Del Mar.
Did favorite Game On Dude lose because jockey Chantal Sutherland let the reins slip out of her left hand in the final sixteenth of a mile?
Did Dullahan win because he thrives on synthetic surfaces like Del Mar’s Polytrack oval?
Or did Dullahan prevail simply because the 3-year-old is finally showing his championship potential?
Dullahan and jockey Joel Rosario won by half a length, stopping the clock in 1:59.54 as Game On Dude’s reins dangled.
“Dammit, I haven’t done that in 13 years,” said Sutherland, who explained that the reins got caught on the rubber grip of her whip as she switched it from her right to left hand.
Sutherland said dropping the leather straps with which a jockey steers a horse “was a little sloppy” but didn’t cost Game On Dude the race.
“Game On Dude didn’t even notice,” she said.
Maybe more to the point, by the time it happened, Game On Dude had lost the momentum to Dullahan, whose rider is one of the strongest finishers in the game.
Rosario said he didn’t know about Sutherland’s trouble with the reins until he watched the videotape, and didn’t think it made the difference.
