Q:
I always hear that the large Kentucky farms (and others, too) have their horses in the barn during the day and turn them out into paddocks/pastures at night. What is the reasoning behind that schedule?
Debra Medlock
Fall River Mills, CA
A:We bring them up to the barns in the daytime for a number of reasons. We like to monitor their feed intake, so feeding them inside ensures that each horse is getting their fair share of feed and the right amount depending on the individual. We also like to check temperatures and make sure each horse is healthy and free of any kicks, bumps and bruises.
Handling the youngsters is an essential part of their education and makes them much more manageable for the farrier and vet. It also allows them to relax and rest for a while and have a break from the weather. We put fans on them in the summer whilst in the barn so they can cool off. We also have automatic fly spray systems installed in the barns so they are all quite happy to come in during the heat of the day. In the winter they enjoy bedding down in the straw for a few hours and warming up.

Dear everyone: The Spring Racing Carnival has wrapped up for another year – the experts are predicting we’ve seen the winner of the 2013 Melbourne Cup – he’s an entire, a grey, 5y, Shamardal (US) – Princess Serena (US) (by Unbridled’s Song (US)) – owned by a syndicate headed by Gerry Ryan (who also part-owns Americain), and is named Puissance de Lune, and was just brilliant over 2600m in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington. On a very depressing note, The Verminator (a 6y bay gelding), broke down badly and was euthanised on the track. So unfortunately my hopes for a safe race for the equine athletes didn’t come about. But I know DynaKing (among others) will be giving him a warm welcome over the Bridge. Hugs.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Kathy R,
Enjoyed watching part of the Spring Carnival on HRTV. Maybe they will have
more racing from down under this year. So sad about Verminator, you would think
as they get older they would not breakdown as their bones, muscles and joints
are stronger. Very sad part of racing. Glad it was for the most part a good
Carnival.

Thanks for these beautiful links to these amazing video’s! I don’t know much about Dynaformer except for what I have learned on this site! He sounds like a real handful! (It’s so hard for me to believe he was mean, I just don’t think of these gorgeous creatures as being mean!)
I am so sorry to hear about Dynaking, I don’t know his story except for what I read about him a couple of pages ago, how could anyone just dump a horse with such pedigree off somewhere? Thank God for Judy G, my thoughts are with her and her family as the battles the most important fight of her life. May God watch over her and may the angels protect her during her time of need. If you know of any links or articles I can read about Dynaking, would you please post them for me.
I wish there was a place that these retired or unwanted race horses could go, and be cared for, loved and live out the rest of these days with no worries. (Thank God for these wonderful rescue farms, and the people that run them.)
Getting ready for my daughter’s BIG trip to Alaska in a couple of days, she has a layover in Dallas Texas, any advice for me to give to her about the Airport? I am very nervous, as this will be her first time traveling alone and so very far. We are hoping and diligently planning on her NOT checking her bag, as it is a long way to go and have no change of clothes!!!!!!! (Not to mention the severe change in weather!) If any Z-Peeps have any advice, please feel free to advice a concerned mother!

Pati- gradually losing sleep over BC!!!!!
When I flew to Cali, I tried to pack smart. I made sure to take a jacket that I could wear over anything, and I make sure that I had comfortable shoes that I could wear with anything. That way I didn’t have to waste space in my carry-on with shoes that I really didn’t need. Also, make sure she frequently checks gate information on the monitors, as my plane ended up landing in a completely different gate from what was written on my boarding pass. Also tell her to get lots of sleep on the plane, as usually your neighbor to your left and right, depending on where you sit, will be respectful enough to let you do so. Nothing worse than getting off the plane cranky and tired! Especially in a beautiful place like Alaska! I’m green with envy.

Dear GS,
Here is a video of Dynaformer in his paddocke, this is one taken
right after he bred a mare and he is very territorial as he runs
up to the visitors looking on, “thinking you better not come in here”.
He is know for his mean and aggressive personality and because of
this he was very difficult to train, but he left his mark on the TB
in the breeding shed. RIP Dynaking.

I read your daughter is coming to Alaska. Where ?
I only ask because i live in the land of the frozen chosen.
Louise Castello
Janet, I am so envious!!! I would love, love to live there. I haven’t even visited but I plan to some day. You are so lucky!
Janet Newman
Louise:
I always recommend to people to visit in the winter. If you can take the dark, cold and wind chances are good you can handle year round. One of our
favorite past-times is counting the ditch divers ( vehicles that skid out of control and end up in the median) on the Parks Highway with the first big snow. If you own a towing company winter is your season.
The hardest thing is not being able to hop in a car and be in the lower 48 in a few hours, especially with family.
Hope you get a chance to visit.

Janet:
Her boyfriend is stationed in the army and his time of service has come to an end, so they are having a ball or gala for all the men and woman who are leaving the service,. I can’t remember if he is in Anchorage or Fairbanks, I believe it’s Fairbanks! It was a BIG decision on whether to go or not because of work and school, and because of how far it is for such a short period of time, not too mention the fact that she has NEVER traveled alone. But we decided it was a once in a lifetime trip, and it was worth it. Are you any where near Anchorage or Fairbanks? Besides the outfit for the ball, I am assuming she needs warm clothes and appropriate foot wear! (not flip flops, her favorite!) Is it dark all time there yet? If you have any tips or suggestions, please let me know and I will be happy to pass them on to my inexperience traveler!
GirlSaratoga
Janet Newman
Girl Saratoga:
I am closer to Anchorage in Wasilla.
If she is going to Fairbanks it is alot colder there and Anchorage is
a bit warmer. Depending on how much outdoor time she is doing
she will need some warm footwear, although our high school kids
and some adults can be seen wearing sandals with socks. It is dark here at 5 in the evening and light again around 9 to 10 right now. At the height of
winter we will have about 3 hours of daylight. I am so used to it I hardly notice anymore to tell you the truth. Barrow is where you experience the 6 months of darkness. Hopefully she will get to see the Northern Lights, what a show.! People either love Alaska or hate it, there is no middle ground. She may get to see a moose or two in either city, definitely in my neck of the woods. Last year had a Mama and baby bed down at night outside my bedroom window. I am sure her boyfriend will be her main attraction.
Kathy R.
Dear Janet: Your description of Alaska is a million miles away from what I experience here in Canberra, Australia! People here like to think we have it tough, because in Aussie terms we’re the coldest capital city in the country. I tell them they need to check out the temperatures and weather generally in the USA. What we do have to put up with is heat, and in some parts of the country that is a real killer. But I just love hearing about your part of the world – and really envy you the moose and offspring outside your bedroom window – I only have the odd blue tongue lizard and a possum. Hugs, KathyR.
GirlSaratoga
Janet:
She will be going to Anchorage and not Fairbanks, her boyfriend is stationed at the Army base in Anchorage! So happy she will see daylight, she was wondering about that! I am happy to hear that she is going to a warmer part of your lovely state, as these young kids don’t know the meaning of cold!
You are right about her boyfriend being the main attraction, she hasn’t seen him in almost a year since he’s been overseas, and of course the gala, she wants to look nice as to not embarrass him or herself! (There is something to be said having your mother around for big events like this!)
Thanks for all your help tips and insight!

Ben Leon bought at the sale. I really think he just could not stay away. Not going and purchasing may have been his original plan, but I think once you get involved in buying and racing it just draws you in like a moth to a flame.
The sale-topper Nov. 10 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock sale was Atrea, a 5-year-old daughter of Storm Cat who brought $435,000. Glen Hill Farm bought the mare, who was consigned by Lanes’ End as agent.
Atrea is out of the Capote mare New Dice, who produced the Japanese group-placed stakes winner Molto Grande. The sale topper’s second dam is the stakes winner Get Lucky, who produced grade I winner Girolamo , grade II winner Daydreaming, grade III winner Accelerator, and Supercharger, the dam of 2010 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Super Saver . Altrea is believed to be in foal to Flatter .
Sekmet, a full sister to Juddmonte Spinster Stakes winner In Lingerie, brought the day’s second-highest price, selling for $310,000 to Benjamin Leon Jr.’s Besilu Stables. She was consigned by Winter Quarter Farm, as agent. Sekmet is believed to be pregnant to City Zip .
The day’s top-selling weanling was a bay colt by Candy Ride —Magical Theater (by Smart Strike ) that sold to Maverick Racing for $220,000. Lane’s End consigned the colt as agent.

Kubinova Wins In BHP Debut For Mosses
Betfair Hollywood Park News
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (November 11, 2012)—Jockey Eliska Kubinova was a smash in her Betfair Hollywood Park debut, winning with her first mount for some renowned connections Sunday.
Kubinova, who set an Emerald Downs record for wins (76) by an apprentice earlier this year, directed Valeria to a come-from-behind victory for owners Jerry and Ann Moss and trainer John Shirreffs – of Zenyatta fame – in the $20,000 maiden claiming affair.
A 23-year-old native of the Czech Republic, Kubinova had been working horses locally before getting her opportunity in the day’s final race.
“I can’t believe it’s true,’’ said Kubinova, whose agent is George Ortuzar. “I was alone in the (female jockey’s) room all day, so I really didn’t get a chance to talk to anybody. I read the Daily Racing Form on all the horses and I saw all of her races on tape.
“I talked with John earlier about this horse, so he really didn’t say much when he gave me a leg up. He told me she might be a little slow early because she gets nervous. I just tried to calm her down and make a run. Once I found room I was confident.’’
A nine-time loser against better company prior to Sunday, Valeria won by 2 ¾ lengths as the 9-2 third choice in the field of 13. The 5-year-old Elusive Quality mare was claimed out of the race by trainer Peter Miller for Altamira Racing Stable.
