Q:
I was wondering how Lane’s End handles the care of weanlings and yearlings. I know a number of larger operations more or less turn the kids out and only bring them in when it’s time for veterinary care or hoof trimming, with the idea that they’re just letting the babies be babies until the time they need to be prepared for yearling sales or training. I was just wondering if Lane’s End does this or if you guys do give more personal care to the little guys even before they need sales prepping or training!
Kelli Clark
Toms River, NJ
A: At Lane’s End we try to find the right balance between letting horses be horses and that extra bit of professional and personal care.
Our weanlings make the transition from the broodmare side of the farm to the yearling division in the month of December. At this point, we will separate the colts and fillies so the boys have their fields and the girls have theirs. This is a stressful time for these young horses so we keep their routine as similar as possible to what it was like at the broodmare division. This will reduce any additional stress and make their transition that little bit easier.
This routine consists of the weanlings/yearlings coming in from the fields at 7am. We lead them into the barn and run our hands down each horse’s leg. We can then feel if any has a cut, bump, swelling or heat in their legs. This also desensitizes them, so they are easier to touch and handle. They then go into their stalls and eat their breakfast. Feeding them inside allows us to monitor how much each horse eats, and alter their feeds accordingly seen as every horse is different and therefore has different nutritional needs.
Once they are finished eating, we will check their temperatures, pick their feet and administer any medication that is needed. We check temperatures daily. Normally you can tell if a horse is sick simply by observing their demeanor or by the fact that they have not eaten up, but sometimes they will not show any of the obvious signs. This is when taking their temperatures is essential. While we are in their stall taking their temperatures we will also pick their feet. As well as being good hoof care and horsemanship it also makes life much easier when the farrier comes !
After these essential daily chores are completed we have time for the vet or farrier to come if needed. Otherwise we will start grooming the horses lightly so they become used to what is in store during sales prep. As we get closer to prep time, we will start to break the yearlings to plastic bits. We leave the bits in their mouths as we groom them. Using the plastic bits create an easy transition to the metal bits that we use later on during sales prep. We also start to introduce them to the hose so that they are used to getting baths when we start our prep.
These additional tasks take us up until lunch time. At 1pm we will feed them their lunch and turn them out at 2pm. This lengthy turn out time of seventeen hours from 2pm until 7am the following morning is more than adequate time to allow horses be horses. They have that time to run, play and frolic. The concussion on their bones that they create from running and playing mixed with the nutrients that they ingest from our limestone enriched soils helps them to produce strong, healthy bones.
Therefore, I believe that we have the right balance here at Lane’s End between letting horses be horses with their lengthy turn out time and their extra bit of personal care and handling.

Dear Janet,
It is so amazing at his age he is recovering so well.
Very touching his owner came to graze him and he did not
feel well but as she walked him around he started eating
and felt much better.
So reminded me of Jethro, impailing his neck, with a tree branch
in the middle of the night when something spooked him. So lucky
it was a quick stitch and a little rest and he was back to his quirky self.

Here are today’s redneck jokes. You might be a redneck if you have the word “howdy” in your telephone answering machine message. You might be a redneck if you have a four door car and only one of them works. You might be a redneck if you have ever driven down the road with your seat belt hanging out of the door making sparks. You might be a redneck if you are related to everyone living within five miles of your house. You might be a redneck if, with just one sniff of some cow manure, you can instantly identify the breed of cattle it came from.

Well,howdy,TC.

Terry, thanks for the jokes. I only WISH I could identify the breed, from the whiff! My affection for cow manure is historical, going back to every-other-Sunday dinners at my Aunt & Uncle’s place, caretaking a dairy farm in Artesia. There was also an article in the paper about 40 years ago, about a midwest farm family and the allure of manure — and I actually wrote to those people on their farm, about my love for the smell of manure, and to my surprise I got a reply from them, inviting me to come and visit them, they seemed eager. Alas, I did not go.

Does Shireffs have a good one in Mentor Cane
12/3/2012 3:40 PM | horseracingnation.com
Forecasting the future… Unless you are Nostradamus, even the most seasoned professional, of any industry, will tell you the most efficient lessons are learned through mistakes. I have now been a student of clocking for 10 years, so I assume with another 8 years under my belt, I will graduate the equivalent of high school for the profession. Until then, I heed the words of Brad Pitt in the movie Moneyball in regards to his great exchange with scout Grady Fuson. For those that have not seen that film, I would strongly suggest giving it a watch. Trust me, these ramblings will make a touch more sense.
With that helpful disclaimer out of the way, I would like to share my thoughts on a John Shirreffs’ gray by the name of Mentor Cane. The most important tool I have is my gut. It is a tool that can only be sharpened with time. My gut first rumbled about Mentor on October 9th when he showed a legit burst in a team drill where he big-brothered older runner Odeon. In his very next drill on October 18th, my gut said, “this dude is a runner”. He humiliated Odeon. His subsequent drills have not diminished my crush.
What are my expectations? Anything short of a stakes winner and I would be disappointed. The fact that he is an unraced two year old about to turn the Kentucky Derby age of three gets my mind racing. I always have to take note of possible foibles. He does seem fond of leaning in while running on the wrong lead. Thus far that has not slowed him down, but I have found that that could lead to issues on race day. He also seems a bit hot blooded. He will work up a little lather during his routine morning gallops. Nevertheless, I am hoping Shirreffs keeps Mentor happy and sound, so that we can see how his career unfolds from this point. This great game is about athletes. Only racing will prove what kind of athlete Mentor Cane will become because purse money and black type is not awarded for bullet drills. Right now, he sure looks good on the practice field.

Greetings of the Season to all–and to you Zenyatta–hope you are feeling GOOD!!! I will backtrack and scan the past few pages, but before I do Rod & I want to thank all of you for joining in on the fun and congratulations of Rightful Image’s second (wow, second!) place finish yesterday. We were talking last night about how good it made us feel to have congratulations come in from all over the country–thanks to the Dumplings!!! As some of you know, I just wasn’t sure, his having been off for so long, but obviously that time off was put to good use. Rod thought he had a chance to hit the board, especially with Talamo as the jockey. P.S. That long wait after the late gate scratch was nervewracking–bothered some of the other horses. I did feel bad for those connecions (that happened to us once with our very first horse–story for another time) but was very anxious for this race to GO. Thanks again…. and a high hoof from Rightful to all of you! :-) :-) :-)

Belated happy birthday to you, Dawn. I enjoyed your story of your visit to Pulpit–and how wonderful that others got to see him in person, also: Jan D (Texas), Kennedys, Barbara Wood and Shari Voltz. You’ll have fond memories. Trina, thanks for your updated poem about Dawn and also your words about Pulpit.
Hmm..a card to Lava Man..hmm..thanks Doug! Wonder if I should include a few words about our “encounter” last summer? Nah, Summer Encounters are best left alone. Anyway, I’m sure he’s moved on. Love ya, Lava Man!
I wanted to tell you all of a book I just finished–keeping in mind it has nothing to do with racing (OMG!), here is a quote from very near the ending. (Oh, the book–a novel- is, Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple–very good, funny and different, a page turner): Title character Bernadette is relaying information to a minor character(oops I must mention this conversation takes place in Anarctica): “There’a a guy here studying fur seals. He’s also a veterinarian from Pasadena with a degree in equine dentistry. He used to clean Zenyatta’s teeth.” And she goes on about the other people she has met….. That’s it–the ONLY reference to anything racing related in the entire book. I did a double take and then laughed. To me, this means that our lovely QUEEN is like Secretariat…no explanation needed when her name is referenced…after all. doesn’t EVERYONE know the name Zenyatta, just as non racing people have heard of Secretariat?? Z, hope someone reads you that passage; it will make you smile.
Gotta run, time to wrap gifts if they are to get to Pittsburgh on time.
Liked your jokes TC.

I was thinking about our family farm back in Poland, when I decided that maybe I could show my Z family some of our draft breeds! They are used pretty much for everything, and they’re very versatile so we practically don’t use any other type of horse out int he country! I remember sitting on my first horse, and my tiny little legs not even going near the side his belly. It was that first moment when I decided “Hey I like this animal!” and my love for horses stayed. There was another article in Bloodhorse regarding her works and

Herd dynamics??
Will post the mentioned article below.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
To the Kennedy’s:
Here is the quote from Bloodhorse, regarding EP performance:
“”When I want to figure out what is going on inside a horse’s head, I consult Kerry Thomas, my boss at the Thomas Herding Technique, and an expert on equine communication. When Kerry watched the works, he said he didn’t think there was anything wrong with Executiveprivilege physically, but he said something interesting.
“She is increasingly making her own decisions,” Kerry said. “She is not listening to the rider.”
That scenario played out in the Juevnile Fillies as Executiveprivilege drifted outward, against the urging of Bejarano, who had a terrible Breeders’ Cup weekend. The switch to Mike Smith is a big wildcard, as he can give you a Hall of Fame ride one race and a puzzling one the next.””

Dear Z Family:
Just catching up on all the wonderful posts and links. Just found out about Pulpit. How very sad; another Sweetie gone too soon. RIP dear boy.
I’m starting to get some of my energy back now that everything is unpacked and put away and I’ve been able to rest.
I visited Charlie this morning for the first time in two weeks. Before I could even call out to him, as I walked to the paddock he came running over to greet me. This boy just melts my heart. Gave him a big kiss on his beautiful face and lots of carrots and mints. The cut on his foot is healed and he looks great.
Thank you for all your good wishes. Your friendship means so much to me. Hugs, JB

Dear Judy B,
So glad you are getting rest and recovering from the move.
Moving is so much work.
Also please remember, the inflammation (heat) from arthritis or
any injury is treated first with Ice.
The treatment pneumonic is
R = rest
I = ice (24-72 hrs)
C = compression
E= elevation.
With chronic inflammation, ice the best treatment all the time, NO HEAT.
Heat only makes the pain worse at is increases the inflammation inside the joint and makes it swell inside and outside. Something I tell my patient all the time.
A very very common point of confusion.

Thank you for your concern, friendship and excellent advice. You’re a treasure. Hugs, JB

Thanks Sign, Sandy (Northeast Ohio), Trina, Terry Crow, Vicki B and Ann (NC) for your kind responses about Rightful Image. Karen, Judy, Diana, and Kennedys, JAG, too, for your quick input and congrats yesterday. Do not mean to forget anyone- I kinda feel I have–oh Barbara Wood and Linda Edwards–see I know I’ve missed some more! Feel free to insert your name(s):___________________________. We really appreciate our “community” here. As some have said in one way or another, it is a special place.
Ann, hope you are feeling better!
And high hoof to another second placer Mentor Cane!!
JSmith: enjoyed those TROTT videos!
Sign, we saw (TVG) the race that Pure Fun won. Here everyone (radio, etc.) was billing it as EP’s race to lose, and while no one was looking, the “interloper” won. The TVG guys also said that they thought the blinkers did not help EP. Vic S (track announcer) said at the end that she finished fourth “with no excuse.” And I didn’t get Blonde Fog being in the race in the first place. I have no idea what I mean, but I wonder if that didn’t confuse EP. Oh well, Baffert has done well enough w/o my help up til this point, but you know it had to be a disappointment for him.
One more note on “Rightful” yesterday, if I may, (thank you!): the Long Beach Press Telegram had him at 8-1; the Times at 15-1–for morning line I mean. Also one paper had Talamo as jockey, the other had Maldanado. BTW, the LA Times has gone up to $1.50 per day!! YIKES!! At the same time this happened. this past Monday, the O.C. Register went down to 25c (from 75c)–kind of funny, but in reality it isn’t. Sigh.
Yes, Sandy, I will be circumspect with whatever I write to my friend Lava Man. After all, ’tis the season of good tidings and all that.

Thank you, Anne! As always–too cute!

Dear Ann,
Yes, EP had her work cut out for her yesterday.
Posted the two bloodhorse links from her race, the traditional one with
some anyalysis and the video. HRTV commentators said the same
as you.
Although, In the handicapping article, an expert from bloodhorse
commented on her most recent works and said there is nothing
physical, but “she is not listening to the rider”, which is significant.
I guess you know a lot more about herd dynamics, having a race horse,
but may mean she is “the head of the herd” and does not need to listen to the rider.
May need to work on some training issue, as she was tugging on Mike
Smith to go before he was ready. Of course, who the the HOF Trainer???

Alcopop a courageous third in Hong Kong
Posted by: AAP Filled in: Australian Horse Racing | 9/12/2012 at 8:45pm
A horse who has endured a career threatening injury and who appeared to have reached his peak three years ago has turned in the best performance by an Australian-trained galloper in Hong Kong in a decade.
Alcopop, an eight-year-old who started favourite in the 2009 Melbourne Cup and whose career has been punctuated by a variety of problems, finished third in the Chinese territory’s biggest race, the Group One Hong Kong Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.
On a day when one of Australia’s best sprinters, Sea Siren, failed badly in the Hong Kong Sprint (1200m), Alcopop bravely ran past all but two of his highly-vaunted rivals beaten, only by the local champion California Memory and the French filly Giofra.
Jockey Craig Williams told connections they had a horse to be proud of after the $HK22 million race.

Red Cadeaux in breakthrough win
Posted by: AAP Filled in: Australian Horse Racing | 9/12/2012 at 6:45pm
Red Cadeaux, the 2011 Melbourne Cup runner-up, has scored a Group One win that will go down as one the most deserved in international racing, taking out the Hong Kong Vase.
Running in his third top-level race in three countries in five weeks, Red Cadeaux survived by a short head to score his first Group One win over Japan’s Jaguar Mail with local runner Liberator a further half length away.
As well as being hard earned, Red Cadeaux’s win was as international as any victory could be.
The six-year-old is trained in England, owned in Hong Kong and was ridden by Frenchman Gerald Mosse.
“He deserved this win like no horse I’ve ever had,” trainer Ed Dunlop said.

California Memory scores in the Cup again
By Paul Eacott Racing Post 8:56AM 9 DEC 2012
CALIFORNIA MEMORY became the first horse to win the Hong Kong Cup for a second time when he defended his title with an easy win
Although the record books will say California Memory only won by a length, he was eased down late on to beat French raider Giofra comfortably with a further length and three quarters back to Australian runner Alcopop.
Carlton House was never a factor on his final start for Sir Michael Stoute and finished sixth beaten around five lengths.

No worries for Ambitious Dragon as he lands Mile
By Paul Eacott Racing Post 8:08AM 9 DEC 2012
HONG KONG”S horse of the year Ambitious Dragon overcame a late scare to run out a popular winner of the Hong Kong Mile.
The Tony Millard-trained six-year-old had to overcome a late test from the vet due to a leg injury but any worries about his wellbeing proved to be unfounded as he swooped down the centre of the track to win.
Glorious Days finished three quarters of a length back in second with Packing OK just edging out Gordon Lord Byron for third.
