Q:
I was wondering how Lane’s End handles the care of weanlings and yearlings. I know a number of larger operations more or less turn the kids out and only bring them in when it’s time for veterinary care or hoof trimming, with the idea that they’re just letting the babies be babies until the time they need to be prepared for yearling sales or training. I was just wondering if Lane’s End does this or if you guys do give more personal care to the little guys even before they need sales prepping or training!
Kelli Clark
Toms River, NJ
A: At Lane’s End we try to find the right balance between letting horses be horses and that extra bit of professional and personal care.
Our weanlings make the transition from the broodmare side of the farm to the yearling division in the month of December. At this point, we will separate the colts and fillies so the boys have their fields and the girls have theirs. This is a stressful time for these young horses so we keep their routine as similar as possible to what it was like at the broodmare division. This will reduce any additional stress and make their transition that little bit easier.
This routine consists of the weanlings/yearlings coming in from the fields at 7am. We lead them into the barn and run our hands down each horse’s leg. We can then feel if any has a cut, bump, swelling or heat in their legs. This also desensitizes them, so they are easier to touch and handle. They then go into their stalls and eat their breakfast. Feeding them inside allows us to monitor how much each horse eats, and alter their feeds accordingly seen as every horse is different and therefore has different nutritional needs.
Once they are finished eating, we will check their temperatures, pick their feet and administer any medication that is needed. We check temperatures daily. Normally you can tell if a horse is sick simply by observing their demeanor or by the fact that they have not eaten up, but sometimes they will not show any of the obvious signs. This is when taking their temperatures is essential. While we are in their stall taking their temperatures we will also pick their feet. As well as being good hoof care and horsemanship it also makes life much easier when the farrier comes !
After these essential daily chores are completed we have time for the vet or farrier to come if needed. Otherwise we will start grooming the horses lightly so they become used to what is in store during sales prep. As we get closer to prep time, we will start to break the yearlings to plastic bits. We leave the bits in their mouths as we groom them. Using the plastic bits create an easy transition to the metal bits that we use later on during sales prep. We also start to introduce them to the hose so that they are used to getting baths when we start our prep.
These additional tasks take us up until lunch time. At 1pm we will feed them their lunch and turn them out at 2pm. This lengthy turn out time of seventeen hours from 2pm until 7am the following morning is more than adequate time to allow horses be horses. They have that time to run, play and frolic. The concussion on their bones that they create from running and playing mixed with the nutrients that they ingest from our limestone enriched soils helps them to produce strong, healthy bones.
Therefore, I believe that we have the right balance here at Lane’s End between letting horses be horses with their lengthy turn out time and their extra bit of personal care and handling.

Dear Sheena,
I was so excited to see that race. Everytime they jump I feel like I am
jumping too. Very grueling course, those six jumps in a row and the water
is high and wide. Not like in Grand Prix jumping where they usually only
jump water wide and not high. Of course, the falls are no fun, HA HA HA !!!!

Dear All,
Happy Sunday to everyone. Have been very busy, but “lurking the Zenny Site”. Am way behind in posting, but hope everyone knows I care.
I did get to see a few races yesterday. I was all on board for Executive Privelledge, but wow, what a race by Pure Fun. That is it what makes TB horseracing, so much fun.
Anne in Paramount, Congrats with Rightful Image. It is so much fun to read your posts and to know, I had the great fortune to meet you at BC.
RIP, Dear Pulpit, This really through me through a loop.
Ann NC, Get well soon and your little kitty too. Someday, I will tell you all the long sage of me and my Cosmo. He brought me such joy through sickness and health.
Sign, Happy Hanukah! Even though I am Catholic, I have always loved and admired the Jewish faith. I love your daily inspirations.
Keta, thank you for your continued deligent “keeping us informed:” It really helps me.
Judy Berube, I am so glad Papa Charlie is well. Bless you and him.
I love you all, especially you Zenyatta, my angel.
But, on a last note, for this post, I am really worried about our dear friend Kathy R, from Australia. One of my residents told me Australia had some very bad storms this past week, and we have not heard from Kathy R, since then. Hopefully, I am just being a worry wort. Hope and pray you are well Kathy R.
I know I will think of people and events I forgot to mention, but Happy Sunday to all and love forever to my angels Zenyatta and 12Z.

Dear Darlene,
So glad you got the opportunity for “catch up and get in your Zenny fix”.

Thanks for the update on weather Down Under.
Sorry for the confusion, I posted the Happy Hanukah for those on our site of

Happy Sunday to you too, Darlene. I’m also way behind on the posts. Hopefully when the holidays are over I won’t be working so much and I can spend more time on the blog. I hope all the Dumplings out there have a joyous Sunday and Happy Hanukkah to all of my Jewish friends.

Hi Darlene,
Nice to see you here – we’ve missed you. In addition to possibly bad weather, Kathy R also mentioned (several pages ago, but I just happened to see it again), that her Mom was quite sick with shingles so that has probably also kept her busy. Hope they are both OK.

My tribute to Pulpit.
Sired by A. P. Indy and to Preach you were born
to the bluegrass of Kentucky you will always belong.
Looking like your father you grew up strong.
The triple crown of glory would not rest upon your head, but
your true mark would come in the breeding shed.
A sire of sires you have become

A daughter named Sign has come to ease our pain
and praying your glory she will gain.
Eighteen years so short on this earth and
now in Heaven you have a rebirth.

Dear Darlene, Sign and Sandy: What a great start to my Monday to see such caring comments from you all – I’m really, really touched. But then again, this IS the Zenyatta family, so I shouldn’t be surprised. My Mum is suffering dementia and we had to place her in a nursing home a few years ago, but she is rapidly losing it, so to speak, with increasing confusion, and just seeming not to be at all interested in life. I’ve a sister here in Canberra, and we share the visits, but are so glad we placed her in the home because she was starting to wander away from her original home, leaving the doors unlocked, stuff like that. At least we know she is safe and has really lovely staff to be there at all times (she also has a heart condition). I’m the dummy who got the shingles – thankfully they seem to be calming down. The weather here is the usual summer stuff, bush fires, thunderstorms, and strong winds – the winds caused a bit of a problem in Sydney, but Sydney folk are very precious (as I tell my other sister who lives there) and need to stiffen up with a look at the sort of weather (with a capital W) that you folk accept as fairly normal. Racing is also very quiet as the silly season rolls on. Much love to you all! KathyR. Oh yes – we lost a wonderful stallion, Thorn Park to laminitis – he’ll be welcomed over the rainbow bridge by Pulpit, and other mates!
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Kathy R,
So sorry to hear about your mum, but sooo very happy she is in a safe place.
When they start to wander, they can get hurt or lost and that is definately some-
think no one wants to experience. Sound like a wonderful loving place, very hard
to find here, but found one for my mum, too, when she came to live in Houston.
Hugs to all of those in Sydney with that treacherous weather !!!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Glad to see you back Kathy (I must learn to read more carefully!!). Hope you’re recovering from the shingles and didn’t suffer horribly. Was thinking about you earlier today as I scanned this list of CNN’s top cities around the world in “Quality of Life.” Take a look at this link: http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/04/business/global-city-quality-life/index.html
Australia has 5 cities in the top 30 (and one from your New Zealand neighbors as well!!). Not so many from here in the USA. Always wanted to visit down there someday.
Kathy R.
Dear Sandy: Oh my, Canberra at number 26 – better keep that one quiet from the local government or they’ll use it as an excuse to increase the rates and gas prices. Melbourne is a terrific city and not only for the great racing. But San Francisco is lovely, especially those cute little pastel houses, and the Bay I think is much better than Sydney. Don’t know why Seattle didn’t make the list though. Hugs.

It is a tough journey with Mom! Bless you & your sister!
Had a shingles attack earlier this year–no fun!
Here we have a vaccine for it.
It was recommended even when you have had an attack.
Apparently it is known to come back The vaccine prevents that.
Might want to check with your physician.
Hugs,
Keta
Kathy R.
Dear Keta: thanks for that piece of information – will ask my friendly doctor. Hugs.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Kathy R,
Here is information in the Herpes Zoster (shingles vaccine) from
Mayo Clinic one of our very prominent medical centers way up
in “cold country”, Minnesota.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/shingles-vaccine/AN01738
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Kathy R,
More on the Herpes Zoster vaccine (shingles) (also reccomended
only over age 60 as immunity is lower at that time in life, can take
it 50-59 age but may not be beneficial. Also very expensive here
in the US.
Below is a statement from a Harvard Medial School publication that says
taking the Herpes Zoster vaccine after having shingles is not reccommended. Once one gets shingles, it is like you aready have had the vaccine and antibodies begin to form. Also no research to show any benfit.
“When the FDA approved the shingles vaccine (sold under the brand name Zostavax) in 2006, the agency posted a question-and-answer piece — which is still on its Web site — that says an episode of shingles boosts immunity to the varicella-zoster virus, so people who have had shingles are unlikely to have a second case. The same piece notes that the effectiveness of Zostavax in preventing repeat episodes of shingles “has not been demonstrated in clinical studies.” And the FDA-approved prescribing information (the package insert) for the vaccine is silent on the subject of whether people should be vaccinated after they have already had shingles.”
Max
Sign. Very interesting information.
Keta
Sign,
My suggestion to Kathy was based on the recommendation from my MAYO primarycare physician. There are several Mayo facilities in the Phoenix area-two are about 15 miles from where I live.
Never would I presume to give medical advice-especially unsolicited.
There is too much information that I do not know-for example, Kethy’s age.
And, I have no idea what health care costs are in Australia.
This was nothing more than sharing information based on similar personal
experiences.
Frankly, until I had shingles, I did not know that a vaccine even existed.
Keta
Here is the opening paragraph from the Mayo link
Whether they’ve had shingles or not, adults age 60 and older should get the shingles vaccine (Zostavax), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Although the vaccine is also approved for use in people ages 50 to 59 years, the CDC isn’t recommending the shingles vaccine until you reach age 60. .
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Keta,
Your quote from the Mayo link is correct.
However, once you get shingles it is like getting the vaccine, called
active immunity, so there is no reason to get the vaccine. Age is an
issue but that can always be gotten around by “off label” administration,
which some MD’s due if patient is high risk.
Also the cost is about $150 and often not covered by insurance in the US.
Many Doctors had the vaccine in their offices, but due to cost and not
getting reimbursed by the patient or insurance they are now giving
prescriptions to the patients to pick up the vaccine at pharmacies and bring back to the office for administration. Therefore no lost revenue.
Great discussion topic.

Dear JudyB. We’re really grateful for the care Mum gets in her home – she’s not really happy to be there, but as you say, we know she’s safe. dear kathy so glad to know you are alright typical aussie weather my mum suffered with dementia as well it’s a sad end to a life know what you must be going throughsorry to hear about thorn park hr’ll be fine with all his friends how are things settling down on the radio station?hugs sheena
Kathy R.
Dear Sheena – Thorn Park will be proudly represented by his son Jimmy Choux who was standing his first season this year – great way to remember him. That useless radio station has a lot of form in this regard – some very tacky “gottcha” efforts. What on earth possessed them to think it’s funny to be a nuisance to a hospital though I’ll never know. I hear that poor Kate is still very ill. Hope your weather has settled down a bit. Hugs.

A Birthday Poem for Adrianna
December 9, 2012
We have read
In the posts of her mother
’Bout Adrianna
And her thrillin’
Rides on William,
That dashing off-track Thoroughbred.
Adrianna’s the daughter
Who decided maybe she oughtta
Take a look see
At what could be
A shared activity
With her mother.
Mom is none other
Than Kim S on Z’s site,
Who, inspired by Susan in TN,
Thought she just might
Go see about
Helping out
At Equestrian Inc.,
And–what a lovely mother-daughter link–
Adrianna soon the same did think!
Quickly she there won many hearts.
At that rescue she is known
For the kindnesses she has shown,
And also her sparkling wit they extol.
Today she’s turning twelve
And wishes into equine arts
Yet deeper to delve.
She’s still yearning
More to be learning
About how to cajole
And gently control
That frisky ex-racer,
So full of vigor and vim.
After their sessions,
She gives William a bath
And a loving caress
With her gentle touch
While cooing to him
He’s the best.
William loves her ever so much!
Also at school
Adrianna’s nobody’s fool:
She’s great with her lessons–
’Specially in math
She’s a true test acer.
Yes, Adrianna
Is a top banana!
So let’s all give a rousing holler
To this multi-talented honor roll scholar!
Happy birthday, Adrianna, and many, many happy returns!

Trainer hails Sprinter Sacre’s brilliance
Posted by: AAP Filled in: International Horse Racing | 10/12/2012 at 12:00pm
Nicky Henderson believes Sprinter Sacre is already close to being the best chaser he has ever trained after his effortless victory in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown.
The six-year-old is unbeaten over fences and never came off the bridle in adding another Grade One to his haul.
Henderson houses the current Queen Mother Champion Chase winner in Finian’s Rainbow and trained one of the greatest two-milers of his generation in Remittance Man, but he already thinks Sprinter Sacre has eclipsed them.
“I think he’s a bit special. What he did yesterday was what we were all hoping for. It’s been a long wait and the last week has been quite a long one as well,” Henderson told At The Races.
“He is a completely different type to Remittance Man. He was a charming horse, small and wiry but he could really jump.
“Sprinter is a great big thing, classy and a real speed horse.
“In a bit of work at home it wouldn’t be a contest, Sprinter would be in another league. Sprinter has that touch of real class and I think he’d win (if they met).
“I don’t know if you can say he’s the best chaser I’ve ever trained just yet, but he must be getting very close.
“In fairness, we’ve had better hurdlers over the years before Long Run came along, he’s been the only realistic Gold Cup horse.
“We mustn’t forget Finian’s Rainbow who is the current champion chaser yet he seems to be slipping off the radar.
“He’s fine this morning and trotted up well.
“I would think we’ll go to the Victor Chandler and it’s possible that is all we’ll do before Cheltenham, then he can go to either Aintree or Punchestown.”

Trina, thanks for letting us know more about Adriana.
At the track today there was a tribute to John Scheer(?-sorry–can’t think of correct spelling now.) He’s the one who jumped in front of the horse at S.A. to save that little girl. Anyway, today was his last day at Hollypark–been working there 50 (!) years and has decided the commute is too long! He will resume work at S.A., however. Remember he is 90 (or is it 91?) years old! Thanks for the news about our hero John Shear. I’m so glad he is continuing at Santa Anita. He must be 91 now–here’s an excerpt from a year ago at Santa Anita:
ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 2, 2011)—Santa Anita Park will pay tribute to its heroic 90-year-old Paddock Guard John Shear on Saturday, Oct. 1, as the Great Race Place will name a designated race “The John Shear Hero Purse.” The race will include a winner’s circle ceremony in which Shear will be recognized for his selfless act of heroism earlier this year on March 12, when he shielded a 6-year-old girl from a runaway horse prior to the third race just outside of Santa Anita’s walking ring.

Good Morning Carol,
If you win out over hubby, Kentucky vs. Hawaii, let us all know. Maybe some of us could come and meet you in Kentucky. It would be so nice to meet you and I know some of us are wanting to see some horse farms this spring/summer.

Dear Carol, I hope you get to see Pure Fun! What a great Zenny-esque style she has!

@Good morning all–before I rush out the door, I want to give a more thorough report to those who were interested in the over 100 mini horses that were rescued. This has pictures and a video.

Another senior moment–thought it was Kathy who mentioned Sacre.
He is quite a talent–good article.

Dear Sheena,
Did get one of your e-mails and love the Frankel story, “eye for the girls”, HUMMM !!!
and he has quit “tearing up his box” ??? Oh those girls, may have something big in
store. They said in Japan that Silver Charm would intimidate the girls when he came into the shed, like a very tough, boisterous stallion. Love the info on Sacre also.
Hope it wasn’t too cold and windy.
It was very much in Houston, woke up and it was 37 degrees F. Very cold for us
Texans.

Best wishes trainer Mel Stute … bless you and get well soon!

Judy, Max, Sign, Keta, my Gabby won her first race at Calder last month. Don’t know how in the world I missed that. She came in first. Yippeee. Watch out every one War Pass’s girls doing well. She’s breezed Dec 4. Wonder if she will run again this month?
Soo Happy she won. She will be 3 next year she should keep improving.

Gabby is a winner, just a slow start !!!!
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy
Jeez, I’m sorry. Was that the race you were telling me about last month? I think I got confused and I thought she came in second. I know you said you were going to see if you could get a copy of that race. Was that the one she won. I am just so glad she won.
Keta
Peggy & Judy,
Here is some info on Gabby’s win. Very brave!
11-17-2012 Calder Race Course Race 10 Maiden Claiming
Gabbiano in Dead Heat with Whateverworks
Footnotes: Gabbiano away alertly, set the early pace, got clear in the turn,
responded when challenged from the outside entering the stretch,
slight brush, also proved game to the end.
There is a video of the race on Equibase & Calder-requires a log in.

I didn’t realize some of us are continuing here — there’s 6 pages on the new blog already! https://staging.zenyatta.com/news/ann-and-jerry-visit-zenyatta

There is such an outpouring of love and thanks for the photos on that Blog.
I felt that adding news or info about racing was an intrusion.
So, I returned here to post the what-is-happening-in-the world news.
Others might be feeling the same way.
Hugs, Keta
