Q:
I was wondering how Lane’s End handles the care of weanlings and yearlings. I know a number of larger operations more or less turn the kids out and only bring them in when it’s time for veterinary care or hoof trimming, with the idea that they’re just letting the babies be babies until the time they need to be prepared for yearling sales or training. I was just wondering if Lane’s End does this or if you guys do give more personal care to the little guys even before they need sales prepping or training!
Kelli Clark
Toms River, NJ
A: At Lane’s End we try to find the right balance between letting horses be horses and that extra bit of professional and personal care.
Our weanlings make the transition from the broodmare side of the farm to the yearling division in the month of December. At this point, we will separate the colts and fillies so the boys have their fields and the girls have theirs. This is a stressful time for these young horses so we keep their routine as similar as possible to what it was like at the broodmare division. This will reduce any additional stress and make their transition that little bit easier.
This routine consists of the weanlings/yearlings coming in from the fields at 7am. We lead them into the barn and run our hands down each horse’s leg. We can then feel if any has a cut, bump, swelling or heat in their legs. This also desensitizes them, so they are easier to touch and handle. They then go into their stalls and eat their breakfast. Feeding them inside allows us to monitor how much each horse eats, and alter their feeds accordingly seen as every horse is different and therefore has different nutritional needs.
Once they are finished eating, we will check their temperatures, pick their feet and administer any medication that is needed. We check temperatures daily. Normally you can tell if a horse is sick simply by observing their demeanor or by the fact that they have not eaten up, but sometimes they will not show any of the obvious signs. This is when taking their temperatures is essential. While we are in their stall taking their temperatures we will also pick their feet. As well as being good hoof care and horsemanship it also makes life much easier when the farrier comes !
After these essential daily chores are completed we have time for the vet or farrier to come if needed. Otherwise we will start grooming the horses lightly so they become used to what is in store during sales prep. As we get closer to prep time, we will start to break the yearlings to plastic bits. We leave the bits in their mouths as we groom them. Using the plastic bits create an easy transition to the metal bits that we use later on during sales prep. We also start to introduce them to the hose so that they are used to getting baths when we start our prep.
These additional tasks take us up until lunch time. At 1pm we will feed them their lunch and turn them out at 2pm. This lengthy turn out time of seventeen hours from 2pm until 7am the following morning is more than adequate time to allow horses be horses. They have that time to run, play and frolic. The concussion on their bones that they create from running and playing mixed with the nutrients that they ingest from our limestone enriched soils helps them to produce strong, healthy bones.
Therefore, I believe that we have the right balance here at Lane’s End between letting horses be horses with their lengthy turn out time and their extra bit of personal care and handling.

Peter,
Excellent explantion of what happens.
I wondered about a couple of things:
What is the outside temperature threshold when they do not stay out at night?
And, have there been any problems with predators at night?
Keta
Tony
Keta, excellent questions you raise.
Kathy R.
Dear Keta: Please excuse my ignorance, but what sort of predators are likely to be a problem? We’re a bit light on for predators DownUnder – your question is one I’d never thought of!
Keta
Kathy R
Good question–I wouldn’t know the wildlife in your area
Kentucky is home to black bears, wolves, pumas (mountain lions)-larger animals.
And, coyotes and foxes, smaller. Concern here is more rabies than killing.
One danger to farms is pack of dogs who are domesticated but can
become hunting packs.
There are snakes such as timber rattlesnakes and coral, both poisonous.
Most of the larger predators live in the hills & mountains.
So, you really would not expect to see them walking through the fields.
And, I am sure the farm staff keeps an outlook for these types of threats during the daily maintenance.
But, especaily during difficult environmental times-drought, lack of usual food sources-they will wander down looking for prey.
This obviously is not a major problem or Lane’s End would not be leaving the horses out all night.
But, how do they handle night watch?
Keta
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter of RN Club
Dear Kathy R,
We are quite will known in Texas for out coyotes,
And very poisonous snakes. Our horses stay out
All night without any problems as the will
Flee at a moments notice, that is how Jethro
Impaired his neck with a tree branch.
It is usually the infirm elderly horses or the young
Foals that are threatened by wild animals as they
Are not able to run very fast.
All those weanling with fast moms and dads will
Probably threaten the predators more, HA HA !!!
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
I think by now these weanlings are too big and fast even for a pack of coyotes, especially when they’re togehter in a herd. Much easier pickings for the coyotes elsewhere.
Kathy R.
Dear Keta, Sign and LauraJ: Thanks for the responses re predators. Stud farms here rarely seem to have issues with wild dogs (by that I mean domestic dogs gone feral, which is a big problem for livestock farmers in this country, and not the dingo). It’s rare to hear of brown or black snakes being an issue, and oddly enough the most common is loss due to weather – lightning strikes, flooding, or those damn bush fires. But those beasties you folk have to deal with are what I’d call serious predators (call them “Sir” if I came across them!). Thanks again.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Kathy R,
TOO CUTE !!!
We do have quite a “crew” of predators here.
Maybe we could add some Dingo’s to the mix???

Vicky,
Since i am the one who posts most of the tweets,
I wonder what you mean by “tweeted Spam”
And, when you say “on this page” do you really mean on the Blog?
If all Comments were limited to Zenyatta and 12Z and their care,
there would be very few posts.
Missing would be all the informations all the other horses who are racing here in the USA and internationally and the races;
All the wonderful education that Sign gives about horse behavior and care and about horsmanship such as jumpers and dressage; ;
Updates on horse who have been injured; and their recovery,
by the way, all the sharing on the Breeders Cup, the events, the parties, and the Dumplings are gone.
Also, any info to help support rescues would not be here.
And, lost would be the wonderful stories from Sue Noel and Shari Voltz and Karen Gogue and so many others
No birthdays could be posted and Trina’s wonderful poems would be gone.
The Redneck Club with Terry Crow’s funny stories no longer.
So, Vicky, there are so many different pieces that make this quilt–this Blog.
And, for me, it is all those varied pieces and colors that make it so rich and warm.
If I have posted anything that offends you, I apologize.
If you can tell me exactly what that is, I will try not to do it in the future.

Fox Hill Farm has Triple Crown hopeful
Published: November 27, 2012 By Sports Network — The Sports Network
Coming off a narrow defeat in the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct, Fox Hill Farm’s Normandy Invasion is expected to carry the owner’s silks into the 2013 Triple Crown.
Owner Rick Porter and trainer Chad Brown are already mapping out a plan for the colt. Ridden by Jose Lezcano, Normandy Invasion lost by a nose to 3-2 favorite Overanalyze as the 7-2 third pick in the 10-horse Remsen.
“The big thing is that we know now that he is a special horse,” Porter noted. “Chad and I watched the race together and yelled as loud as we could. He will ship to Florida shortly and have two and a half weeks of walking and jogging to give him a slight break even though he has only run three times.”

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) and the New York State Racing and Wagering Board (NYSRWB) recently adopted new regulations recommended by a Task Force of experts after 21 horses died or were euthanized at Aqueduct Race Track in Ozone Park, N.Y., during the NYRA winter meet of 2011 (held Nov. 30, 2011, to March 18, 2012). Most of deaths were due to musculoskeletal injuries.

OTTB Showcase: Mr. Wolverine
by Jen Roytz | 11.28.2012 | 7:42am Paulick Report
Anyone who’s been around off-track Thoroughbreds knows that they can definitely let down after their racing days are over and turn into trustworthy riding horses. Most people will also agree that many times the longer the horse’s racing career, the harder it can be to transition them into a mount suitable for beginners.
Meet a guy who bucks those trends: Mr. Wolverine.

I am not sure older TB or horses for that matter
Would be harder to train right off the track.
Maybe going somewhere where there was little
Training and bad habits developed from treatinguy
Them like humans rather than horse, might interfere.
The older guys and gals calm down considerably
With age and are Sooo very special. It is having
One right off the track and getting them to use the
Thinking side of their brain rather than the emotional
Side if their brain as Clinton Anderson says is the
Challenge.
When it appears they are running for joy, they are
Running out of desperation as no one has taught
Them to slow down and think !!!! Love Clinton Anderson,
He is from Austrailia and uses the Kangaroo in his
Training programs emblem.

Sign: here is the video of Zenyatta’s first turnout at Lane’s End. Doesn’t look like desparation to me.
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/videos/10872/zenyatta-at-lanes-end-2010
But then, the people at Lane’s End know how to do this by giving her time to get used to her new surroundings, hand-walking and grazing for several weeks before she’s turned out and having people spaced around the inside of the paddock to make sure she doesn’t run into anything. This was the first time in 5 years this mare was off of a lead to just run as she pleased. I see a horse that is excited, not fearful. The flagged tail, spring-loaded trot and whinneying shows me a horse that is saying “This is so cool”, not “I’m so scared”. Just my opinion but I think you have to judge the horse, it’s surroundings and people before judging.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
SharonAtlanta,
So very much love this video. Thanks so much for sharing, but Zenny’s let down and everything that went into the preamble for this video was carefully
prepared and orchestrated. Not usually done with every day horses.
So really no comparison. She is running with joy.
Not sure if you were on the diary as all
of this unfolded, but Zenny was let down and hand walked for over
a month. The thinking side of her brain was very much in effect and probably always has been more than other horses. I do think her dancing
was a stress release for her, though.
My comment was made for those horses who are not so carefully let down,
which many are not and end up injured or in an accident in the paddock,. Zenny is very cherished and her let down and this video are only particular to her.
Those without much horse experience may interpret their horses running around the paddock, very fast as joy, when it is desparation as they have not been taught to relax and all they know how to do is go faster and faster and faster.
Not sure if you have HRTV, Clinton Anderson a well know trainer, who lives in Texas and is from Down Under, he let down a TB from the track on his show. He rode and did ground work with that gelding 5 days a week for 12 weeks in order to get him to relax, hang his head and as he says “act like a quarter horse”.
TB tend to get emotional even when they have been retrained and often
need to be placed on a lunge line to run, buck and play in a safe manner
before a rider gets on. The big question is always “is the horse quiet”.
Also when they are emotional head will be up and as they run around
they will start to hang their head and begin to lick and chew, both of which are “signs” of relaxations.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS VIDEO AGAIN, I NEVER TIRE OF IT BUT IT IS NOT GENERAIZABLE TO ALL HORSES, ONLY TO HER.

I don’t write here, but read it everyday. Keta you are the backbone of this interesting
and friendly place to be. I do hope you know you are appreciated and many look
forward to all the info you have provided. Please be back soon. I do hope you
are not in difficulty. I am concerned and shocked with the sudden departure . I feel

Keta, I agree with all of the above.
I’m one of those that looks forward to your posts (tweets, articles etc) that otherwise, we wouldn’t know about. Look at how you helped all of us join in on PUP through all the tweets. Those are very dear to our hearts because, otherwise, we wouldn’t have continuous updates on him.
It’s not just about that either, it’s about you as an idividual willing to help those that otherwise couldn’t find info. You have become a dear friend to most of us on here, the patrons.
This site was made for Zenyatta Fans and Horse Fans. So full of information and lessons learned. It’s about, love, determination, togetherness, understanding, empathy, and just pure friendship. No matter how far apart we are, or the age differences etc.
If this is a personal decision, I hope you get it resolved and will be ok and will join us again soon.
BTW… What is “Tweet Spam?”

My friend Keta,
I totally agree with everyone. If you were to leave, I would miss you very very much.
You are a TRUE horsewoman. Horse folk tend to trade many stories, tales, hints, tips and are a pleasure to be with. Keta, you are our ROCK!!!!!
Understandably, the material on this blog, goes w/ the flow. One thing leads to another and then,oh I recall and yes,I do this for that and so on and so on. Fantastic horse jabber and it does not get any better than on here! All because of your kind, caring and helpful attitude.Queen Zenny has brought a great group together. Z would want you here.
So…take a break,if for personal reasons,otherwise…..we NEED YOU HERE!!!!!!
HUGS and LOVE,

Dear Keta: I don’t know what to say – this is very distressing news – I came in at the top and posted a couple of little bits, and then scrolled down to read your comment. Like the others, I’m very upset, to say the least. I hope you’re well, and just off to check out some predators (or maybe have a vacation DownUnder and seek out Bensley?). But I join the rest in sending you much love and will look for your posts each day.

Dear Keta, If leaving the Blog is because you have other demands on your time etc, God Bless and thanks for all the information. You seem to always know the answers to my questions or where to go to find them.
If this is because some Dummy has said something to offend you, please reconsider. Many of us look forward to your posts each day and would sorely miss them. We have become joined together by our love of Zenyatta and the sport of racing and some idiot should not be allowed to spoil it.
