Q:
Sales have always fascinated me but I don’t have a full understanding of all the mechanics of them. How is it chosen which yearlings will be sent to auction and what sales they will be sent to?
Brooke Coleman
Versailles, KY
A: Determining if a yearling will go to public auction depends on a number of factors, beginning with the initial interests of the breeder. Some clients breed to race, some breed specifically to sell, and some do a little bit of both.
Sale nominations are submitted to the auction companies by May 1st of their yearling year; this is when it is determined who will be kept to race and who will be pointed towards a sale. This decision is generally made by the owner in conjunction with the advice given by our managerial and sales staff here at Lane’s End.
Various sales are held throughout the summer and fall; some are “select”, meaning nominated yearlings must be accepted by the sale companies upon inspection, and other sales are open, or acceptable for all types of yearlings. Determining which sale to nominate a yearling to prior to the May 1st deadline depends on a few important factors:
1) Physical
Yearlings are very similar to teenagers—they can go through awkward stages as they grow and develop, so it is important to select a sale that corresponds well with a horse’s maturity level. Our public sales and managerial staff inspect yearlings every two-three weeks through the Spring months. Notations are made on the horse’s conformation, condition, stride, and even demeanor. Maintaining notes on their physical development allows us to judge how each horse matures and determine the most appropriate sale for them.
2) Vetting
When all yearlings at Lane’s End are between 10-11 months of age, a set of survey x-rays (36 views) is taken to help us determine if any joints need special attention or surgery based on radiographic findings. For sale yearlings, survey x-rays also allow us to establish a suitable exercise program for each yearling entering the sale prep routine on June 1st.
We are mindful of survey x-rays at sale nomination time because radiographic findings can affect how commercial a yearling will be at a sale. Another set of x-rays are taken within 21 days of the auction date and provided for veterinarians to review on behalf of potential buyers.
3) Pedigree
The strength of a yearling’s pedigree also affects which sale we nominate it to. For example, a horse by a proven sire out of a stakes winner/producer will appeal to buyers at select sale venues. Alternatively, a horse with an unproven family will probably be best-suited for a larger, open sale venue where there are more potential buyers present, some of whom may not have steep pedigree requirements.
Lane’s End typically consigns yearlings at the following sales:
July 15: Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Select Yearling Sale
A one-day select sale best suited for a physically forward yearling with few (if any) significant radiographic findings. Because it is a select sale, all yearlings must be accepted in a conformation inspection performed by the sale company. Physicals and X-Rays are very important here as this is the first summer yearling sale and buyers are not pressed to purchase a horse that doesn’t meet their exact requirements. Minimum bid required: $10,000
2012 # Catalogued: 283
Average sale price: $81,291
Median sale price: $60,000
August 5-6: Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale
A select sale taking place over two evening sessions, held in conjunction with the prestigious race meet in Saratoga Springs, NY. Physical, pedigree, and vetting are all extremely important at this sale as it is concentrated with some of the best yearlings to be found all year. Minimum bid required: $10,000
2012 # Catalogued: 162
Average sale price: $299,065
Median sale price: $225,000
August 10-11: Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York – Bred Yearlings
A two-day sale for New York-Bred yearlings only. Athletic-looking individuals sell well here as the sale is well-attended by trainers and end-users looking to race in the lucrative state-bred program. Minimum bid required: $5,000
2012 # Catalogued: 223
Average sale price: $62,551
Median sale price: $50,000
September 9-20: Keeneland September Yearling Sale
This is the largest yearling sale in the world and it is suitable for yearlings of all types… a one-stop shop for buyers! 11-12 sale sessions are typically catalogued within 6 sale books. Horses catalog primarily by pedigree with the best pedigree + physical combinations selling in Books 1-2. Keeneland September attract thousands of international and domestic owners, trainers, and bloodstock agents. Minimum bid required: $1,000
2012 # Catalogued: 3,604
Average sale price: $87,354
Median sale price: $45,000
October 21-23: Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale
A three-day sale acceptable for all yearling types, especially late bloomers! This sale is also a good option for yearlings that may have been injured or experienced a physical setback over the summer months. Minimum bid required: $1,000
# Catalogued: 1,254
Average sale price: $26,127
Median sale price: $12,750

Kathy R. and Max,
The girls send their MOOS!
They will enjoy the warmer weather, under the last quarter moon tonight!
I better get sewing. Have a wonderful weekend.

Dear Ann: Return MOOS to the girls. Glad it’s warming up for them – just hope it doesn’t get to the extreme stuff that’s down here. Love the little bloke and his bull – hope it’s not one destined for the market, and he loses his mate. Love looking at the cattle section when the show comes to Canberra!

Ann NC. Loved the photo. Moos to the two ladies. Keep watching those curves, M & G, for the upcoming fair. I laugh from time to time at your earlier description of some Jersey cows as stubborn.

Now here’s an interesting one:

Max
Kathy R. After her long rest, Black Caviar will probably be better than ever. The big question is who is her chum these days? Is Voila Ici history like her English boyfriend Saloon?
Kathy R.
Dear Max: Very hard to know just how (or even if) Nelly will race. Tricky bunch at that stable. All I know is that there are a lot of people who would dearly love to be the one to beat her. We will have to wait and see. I have not heard about Voila Ici for a bit – he was in the paddock, so is probably about due to come back soon. But I think Nelly is a somewhat fickle lady – just a destroyer of hearts.
Max
Kathy R. Wanting to outrun BC and doing it are two different things. She’s a real racing star. I hope that she continues to win and win well. I heard an interview with Nelly’s groom when she was at Ascot. He said that she is a very sociable horse. She probably has a friend in Moody’s barn. If you hear a name, let us know.

I will have no fingernails left,if the race goes off.

I have a friend her birthday is the 6th we will be going to the Hard Rock over the weekend we do that every year. We don’t win much but you never know. I will go out to eat again and have a few more happy drinks. If my husband was still here he would take me to Disney. I have not been there for many years it’s just not the same without him. I will also be watching horse races today and tomorrow can’t miss them. HOORAYFORHOLLYWOOD what a name love it and WIND GUST John’s horse plus any horse Mikey rides love them all. Okay I do not usually post jokes, but this was funny.
a little twisted, but funny. And I must tell everyone it is a joke

judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
For me it would have to be Z or Bernardini. Love them both so much.
However, my old brittle bones have put an end to my ever considering riding. Angela has asked me many times if I would like to ride Papa Charlie and I have declined. I am content to be the “carrot and mints lady” and visit with him often. Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Me too, I worry about those bones too. I take a Vit D2pill once every month and 2 caltrate Calcium and Vit D tablets every day. Hope its enough.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Just had a fun question to ask. Hope some will answer. Just fun to think about.
If you could go out tomorrow and ride any famous horse (alive) that you wanted to. On a pleasure ride considering your age, your willingness to try, considering the horse, his temperment, his quirks, your ailments, but you wanted to try. Just go for a nice ride. This is a serious question, Someone would be right there with you. Who would you like to ride???????????????????????Mare, Filly, Stallion, Gelding, Either Western Saddle or English. Who would you Choose to ride. It could be anyone. ………………………………….
Here goes my Question, So I think I have to answer. For me I think it would be………POINT GIVEN
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
I know you might give me a hard time about my answer. I would have said Orfevre if he were a little older, but you know I have to think about the horse I might could stay on. (Ha) Love Orfevre dearly, but he’s gotta get a little older. Guess I have to be realistic, Maybe I could stay on Poiint Given. Would love to go for that ride..
Now who would you want to ride.
You know like the TV commercial Who Do you Like today. This is just who would You Like to Ride.
Max
Peggy (N). You can decide. No hard time ever from me. Loving a horse is a personal thing. It sounds however like Point Given has some other ideas about being ridden. You really know how to pick the feisty ole super talented chestnuts. They are both truly amazing horses with big personalities.
Sue Fl CPRC
Wow only one ride?
I believe we would all love to ride Z.
This is hard I have several names running through my brain.
I am going to ride Sunday Silence.
Ann NC
Zagora!
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Ann, What a beauty
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Peggy,
Of course, Frankel. Maybe if they chained me on it would work, although he is
walking 7 miles a day now prepping for his breeding shed stamina. He might be
OK to ride.
A P Indy would also be great as he is 22 now and a veteran is often very kind to their riders. However he has not been ridden for 19 years, so who know what would happen.
Our illustrious, wonderful Zennyatta. Now she would be slower (in foal), bareback
with a halter, and maybe a little easier to get along with when you are on her back.
Great question, Peggy N.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Hey Sign, I almost said my darling A P Indy, but the last time I saw him and they had him outside the stallion barn. He was actually acting a little frisky that day , which was good to see, but I thought now who would be best to ride for me. I remembered that Gary Stevens said he said thatPoint Given was the best horse he ever rode.
He’s getting older now and he seems like such a gentle soul. Although, have no idea of when the last time was that they tried to saddle him. Probably years. Up Oh might be interesting to see, Oh My
I did hear Three Chimneys say that when they needed a good tempered horse to bring out for some reason that he was one of the ones that they usually brought out.
Signofthetimes
Dear Peggy N,
Looks like you got some inside scoop on Point Given, which is the best.
Those TB can still act 2 when the are 25 yo. Jethro was a wildman as
A 23 year old. That AP Indy has been so well taken care of it does not surprise me he would be frisky. Great question for our imaginations.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Nothing could persuade me to get on the back of a racehorse that had not been retrained to be a saddle horse. :-)
But since this is a fantasy, probably Zenyatta. With her even temperament, she would make a great saddle horse. I would want a tall mounting block!
More realistically, I’d be willing to try Lava Man, since he HAS been retrained. I suspect he would be too much horse for my skill level, though.
Of non-Thoroughbreds, there is a gorgeous Friesian stallion, Anton 343 Sport, of whom I am a fan. I’d ride him. If I had the skills, I’d love to ride Totilas. Unfortunately, at my current abilities I would drive the poor beast insane.

Dear Sign and Sheena: Thank you so much for the rain! We had a really noisy thunderstorm for a couple of hours this afternoon that dropped the temperature from 40 down to 25 very, very fast. Gave us 10 ml to top up the rainwater tanks too. So thanks for the UK wet stuff, Sheena, and Sign, could you please ask the Rain Dance guys if they could provide a little more wet stuff, and little less of the sound and light show? (I don’t want to sound ungrateful here, but it scared the pants off the dog). Just a point of reference – the average temperature at this time of year in Canberra is 28. Oh and please, could we have some prayers for the poor folk in Tasmania who lost homes in firestorms today – one little community has lost 40 homes, the local school, and various commercial facilities like the bakery and the sawmill. We’re approaching the 10th anniversary of a firestorm that killed 4 people and destroyed many homes here in Canberra, so it is hard to see this sort of thing. Hugs, KathyR.

Praying for you folks Down Under.

So good news is the the temp dropped!
And, the bad news is it came with thunder/lightning.
We’ll try and get it right!
Know how dogs do not like thunder or lightning.
In my case, not a problem with the dog. Big problem with cat!
But, the dog does not like getting her feet wet.
I try and remind her that she is a Cavalier & a spaniel. Does not work.
The fires are so scary. Terrible loss!
Hugs, Keta
Janet Newman
So sorry to hear of the losses.
Will pray for the safety of all.
Hope the thunder and lighting
settles down and just some
nice rain follows.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Kathy R,
Sooo very glad our American Indians were able to do a rain dance for you and
send it as well. They can be a little “loud” so will have them ask for a quieter
rain storm next time. They often use loud drumming and vigorous dancing to
get the rain to come.
On a more serious note, prayer for those in Tasmania as they face the aftermath
of those terrible fires. So sorry to hear about the fires in Canberra, too. These
disaster are just sooo very difficult to face. The victims of Sandy are still working
on their recovery efforts, thoughts and prayers to them, too.

Dear Sue Fl, Janet, Sue Fredrick, Sheena, I’m with all of you. These are all my favorites. What a hard questionto answer this is. I could just dream about riding one of these beauty’s. Sorry, that is Lewis Michael from Three Chimneys. They say he is great to ride. Still miss his beautiful dad Rahy.

Three Chimneys does not take Point Given out.
I saw a piece and I cannot remember where, but the exercise
rider for the stallions at Three Chimneys said Point Given did not
want any part of it. Lewis Michael is always first because he really loves it.
WinStar has started riding their stallions. I have seen little clips
of Distorted Humor, Speightstown, Bodemiester, Harlan’s Holiday being ridden.
They have Pioneer of the Nile there now and he was ridden
for the first time since he entered stud and did very well. Now Tiznow, I have yet to see.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Janet:
I think this is great for the stallions (except Point Given of course). Their lives are usually so isolated and this must be enjoyable for most of them. Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Oh, well that ends my hopes for riding him doesn’t it. Well I can still dream. I hadn’t ever heard about his status on them riding him. I am glad you posted that. I guess he had just had enough of that in his racing days. He is so kind to be around though.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
I am supposing in there saying that Point Given was one of the one’s that they brought out with a good temper was that for actually showing him to the public. Just love him.
Signofthetimes
Dear Janet,
Now that you mention that about Point Given.
I remember hearing that, they road him for awhile and he started
Rearing up when it was time for a ride, so they got the message
And quit riding him.

Borel to be Featured on Trading Cards
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Saturday, January 5, 2013 9:30 AM
The city of Hot Springs, Ark., is issuing trading cards that will be given to fans in attendance at Oaklawn Park on the day jockey Calvin Borel rides his 5,000th career winner.
With 4,999 victories, Borel is taking a break from competition but will be back in the saddle when the Oaklawn meet begins Jan. 11.
“We have done a series of these trading cards beginning in 2001 shortly after President Bill Clinton left office,” Steve Arrison, chief executive officer of Visit Hot Springs, said in a press release. “They have been among the most successful marketing items we have ever done, with hundreds of thousands distributed free around the globe. When Calvin rides his 5,000th victory we’ll give out free Calvin Borel cards at Oaklawn that day.

Your idea is wonderful and would be a beautiful touch. It would be fun job designing the awards show! Esp. graphics/photos needed.

My Ms. Zagora, show a gorgeous shot of her w/ her forelock in full poof style!

would be a disaster. Would just have to chose that boy to feed him
some carrots.

Have loved reading all the posts, jokes, and Eclipes finalists. I’m glad I don’t have to make the decision (well, one of mine would go to Shack!).
As far as a fantasy horse to ride, I would pick the oldest-lol! Would be a better match for me. Actually, I would ride our Money, who juswt managed to lacerate a place very close to his eye. 2 big shots from the vet, but it could have been so much worse. His mommy (our daughter) says she never rode anything like him–that he feels like a Cadillac.

I am busy on WinStar stablemates looking and watching to see the mare in the foaling camera stall.
Got to see several last year and it is exciting. I keep telling
them they need to hold up a pink or blue flag so we know if it is a
filly or colt.

Great idea, Janet.
Winstar’s camera is too cute. Remember the Super Saver
filly’s video standing for the first time last year.

Is that the one that did the back flip

Dear Sign:
Thank you for this adorable photo of the first foal born at Three Chimneys this year. What a unique blaze she has. Too cute. Hugs, JB
Marty R / Colorado
She has at least one back stocking to go with the blaze. She will be a beauty.

Had not seen Kittens Joy before, anyone want to see him, here is his
stallion directory conformation photo; love that blaze and white hind legs.
Thanks for pointing that out Marty R !!!!

Two stockings! There are definitely two little white legs in that photo.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Oh yes,
I see two white hind legs, too.
Hopefully like daddy like daughter.
Ann NC
So far she is Daddy’s little girl.
Now to see those front legs??!!!
I’m melting,adorable.
Signofthetimes
Dear Ann
I was wondering the same.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Wow! It is amazing to me how they can cut it so close to Jan.1. Just a few days earlier, and they would lose a whole year of racing.
Signofthetimes
Dear Barbara,
Great point, wondered that myself.
This foal could have been a yearling and only a few days old.
Terry Crow
I would think that if a foal came on December 31 he or she would be hid out for a few days.

Dear Sue, Fl

Dear Especially Horses,
Thanks for the heads up, will look for her today.
Ann NC
Thanks,Esp.Horses.
Love her name. Run girl,run.
Max,Max…a Big D. baby girl!

12 of 12. Back to the drawing board. Wind Gust, there is always another day. Listen to John, eat up and do your best. Love your name.
Especially Horses / So Cal
She got Post 1 in a large field (12 maidens in all), and according to the charts she hesitated and was off to a slow start. Not the most auspicious debut for sure, but a learning experience and nowhere to go but up.
Max
Especially Horses. Keep us advised of her next race. I am interested in her as a daughter of Big D, and being trained like Harmonious by John. Hoping for the best for her.

Dear Sign: Just caught up with your post on the previous page regarding stayers in Oz. The money is certainly with the sprinters – especially two year olds – and all the sales gear up for that. But the peculiar thing is the number of either owners, or big name trainers who are actively seeking out European staying types to bring down and work up for the Melbourne Cup. Some owners have around three or four, and we’ve seen Gai Waterhouse, Chris Waller, Peter Moody, all getting into the act as well. Bart Cummings, who has the record for the most number of Melbourne Cup wins believes it is a lack of patience with the modern way of racing, and often talks of his regret that top staying stallions are ignored by breeders simply because of the money factor. I don’t think racing fans in Australia can complain when an international horse takes out the big races in the Spring Racing Carnival (or anywhere else, for that matter) is they don’t get behind staying types. And a lot of the two year olds just disappear (I don’t want to think where) after injury, or just failing at the track. Money is really all that matters, increasingly.

Dear Kathy R,
Very interesting focus for Racing in Australia. Breeding and enjoying speed for
Quick training and performance and importing or soliciting Euro, stayers to win
The Melbourn cup and other longer races. So very true about slow developers or stayers take much more money up front in hopes money will come in on the backside. Therefore, it is difficult for those people with smaller purses to develop a stayer.
Sort of like why Zenny was passed over in the Keenland yearling sale, she was a huge
Undeveloped horse that was going to take time to develop. Goodthing the Mosses had the money up front to develope her. Jerry Moss commented on how many horses he
Purchased to help train her as well, at least 4 or 5 that really were not money earners.
We try to put our speed horses into the classics, which has only resulted in injuries. Almost all of our 3 year olds from 2012 are no longer racing. Maybe breeders here are
Looking at the Australian model to utilize the Euro stayers mixed with our speed to
Get sturdier classic horses.
Interesting to know what is going on in the world of racing.
You are right it is all about the money here, too. If not on the track in the shed. Stallion
Contracts are very variable, one year they are in Kentucky the next the are back in their home states.

Dear Sign: This article from Chris Roots in The Canberra Times/Age explains a bit about Australian racing:

Just had to post this one about a local Canberra horse:

Dear Kathy R,
Great article, All To Hard and Pierro competing. Black Caviar’s possible return, i hope she
Goes to the shed. Would really not like to see her lose. The saga of Oliver continues
And $$$$.
Kathy R.
And another piece on the reason Australian bred stayers are just not in the game:

Again the money is playing a huge part in how the industry is conducted with regard to the major races.
Signofthetimes
very interesting, thanks for sharing.
