Q:

How will Zenyatta’s daily routine change as she gets closer to foaling?

A: Routine is one of the most important factors to keeping all horses, including Zenyatta, happy and settled. Other than moving Z to the foaling barn, her routine remains the same. She is out all day with her buddies and in the barn at night. She and the other mares in her barn are monitored 24 hours a day—with someone checking them in their respective fields during the day and with a full time night watchman keeping a close eye on them at night.

Q:

Is Zenyatta pastured with the same group of mares she was with last year at this time?

A: Z is currently with mares that have a similar foaling dates, that is how we “buddy” them up. This means that they will move into the foaling barn around the same time. Providing all goes well, they can go back out with each other post foaling and after the mares have had time to adjust to their new arrivals. One of the mares Zenyatta is with has been with her since last spring.

Q:

How will you know upon birth whether her foal will be dark bay like its dam or (will turn) gray like its sire?

A: Although some thoroughbred foals are born obviously gray, often it is difficult to tell whether a foal is going to turn gray until they are a little older. They can begin as chestnut or bay before changing color. Usually the first sign they are going to be gray is when gray hair starts presenting itself around the eyes and muzzle when they start shedding their first coat.

Hi Zenyatta and Baby Z I don’t get on here like I used to. To many papers to grade but I want to wish Baby Z an early Happy Birthday. I have that wonderful poster of you framed in my livingroom. Baby Z will be one year old.
Thank you to Mr and Mrs. Moss and Lane’s End for sharing both of your lives. Just know that the children in my classes watch all of your videos. They know about racing and about the farms. i feel so lucky to be part of something so wonderful. The children love you both so much.
Happy Happy Birthday and May God Bless Zenyatta and Baby Z. Soon we will have another foal to celebrate. Love and Kisses, Shari XXXOOO

      Dear Barbara W.,
Thanks for the article on MTB! I was so excited for him and his connections when he and Calvin came home first in the Derby. You gotta love an underdog. He ran very respectably in the Preakness and Belmont, also. YAY, Mine That Bird!!
      Cheers and hugs

Mine That Bird to take up residence at Kentucky Derby Museum
Published March 7, 2013 Edited press release:
Mine That Bird, upset winner of the 2009 Kentucky Derby, will make the Kentucky Derby Museum his home during the spring meet at Churchill Downs this year.
This is the first time the Kentucky Derby Museum has had a Kentucky Derby winner stabled on the grounds to greet the thousands of Derby enthusiasts during this peak time of year.
“As most Derby winners retire to stud, the opportunity to share a legendary horse with the fans at the museum is rare,” says Lynn Ashton, executive director at the Kentucky Derby Museum. “However, as a gelding and a fan favorite with his 50-1 longshot win, Mine That Bird is a great fit for all involved. We appreciate Mark Allen and Dr. Blach’s generous offer to share him with us and the fans.”
Mine That Bird, retired in the fall of 2010, has been stabled in New Mexico at co-owner Mark Allen’s Double Eagle Ranch. He is expected to arrive at the Derby Museum at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 15th as the resident thoroughbred and stay through July 4th, 2013.

From Press Release: MOVIE ABOUT MINE THAT BIRD
A movie about the Mine That Bird story, called 50-1, has wrapped filming and is in the editing stages with famed director/producer Jim Wilson. Capturing the stories of each of the members of the team along with the storied drive to Kentucky by trainer Chip Woolley, the movie highlights the unique blend of circumstances that led them to unexpected victory in the Kentucky Derby.

Congratulations to Calvin Borel on joining the Mr. 5,000 Club! A distinguished and honored group. All 13 before him are HOFers. Perhaps it is now his turn as well.

Oops, not 13. For some reason, I split the number in half. 26 jockeys have reached 5,000 wins, and maybe it’s time for Calvin to join the HOFers already. He’s a finalist, but I would like to see him be inducted already. He’s Mr. Derby after all.

Sorry about that. My English comprehension and writing capabilities today is a bit sub-par.
