Q:
I have a question about the colts. When is the decision typically made whether to geld or leave them intact, and what factors go into that decision?
Nancy Schaffer
Tucson, AZ
A:Typically we will never geld a colt before it leaves the farm, either for the sales or to be broken in, unless there is a medical issue involved. We often have a good idea that they may become geldings fairly soon into their training careers though! Some colts are definitely more “studdish” than others.
Buyers usually don’t want to purchase a yearling gelding, as this will often indicate they have a difficult temperament. On top of that, this is a dreamers game—when someone buys a colt they like to think they have a shot at owning a horse that will have a stellar racing career and go on to leave his legacy as a stud.
Some of the colts that are headstrong and studdish as yearlings improve once they are in training and they have a job to do. With the horses that don’t settle down, it becomes a question of whether you can get the horse to train and race to his full ability if his mind is not on the game and he’s fractious and difficult to handle. If the answer is no, then often he will be gelded at this point.
The other reason to geld a colt is if they are clearly not going to compete at the levels that would then lead to a career at stud. A gelding is usually easier to handle and deal with on a daily basis. I know a lot of people will say they have had difficult geldings or easy colts, and of course that can be the case but generally it’s easier to have a gelding in the shed row, especially when there are fillies in the barn.

For Heidi Kruckenberg: Reba sings WALK ON

What would I do without the Dumplings and of course, Zenyatta? Trina, I left a comment about this of fb but, I’ll say it here as well. When I first got on fb and I saw that you did this for me, I thought, wow, how did she know? Then, I remembered that I told the story about meeting Reba the first time before my Father passed away and how Reba sent me the autographed photo that said: “To Heidi, Walk On, Love Reba McEntire.” Not only that but, there was a very lovely, hand written letter from her to me and said that the next time I go to her concert to let her know and she’d send me VIP passes. Well, it was 4 years later and I had tickets to see her in Sacramento. Sure enough, I got two VIP passes and took Ellen Jackson (VictoryRose) to the concert with me. After the concert, we went backstage and met up with Reba and she remembered me, came up and gave me a huge hug (while she was on crutches). Wow, just Wow!! Prior to this concert, Reba had a skiing accident in which she broke her leg and I thought the concert was going to be cancelled. Noway!! She came out on stage in an old taxi, her grand entrance. Once out of the taxi, she was put into a wheel chair. I think at that moment, I realized the true meaning to “Walk On!” She didn’t let her broken leg keep her from her fans. She was determined to put on a show, and a show, did she! So, the moral of the story is in the song. Keep your head held high and fight to do what is right.
So, I thank you from the bottom of my heart because, this “gesture” has touched my heart and soul in ways that I can’t explain.
Never in a million years did I ever think that I would share such personal stuff on a blog but, it’s because of Zenyatta and what she invokes in everyone of us and that is, kindness, love and understanding.
As is our moto: Love in Dumplinghood!

Penny Crosby from Skip Over Trouble Equine Rescue reports that mom Faith and baby colt Fredrick the First are both doing well, considering the shape mom came in in three weeks ago (injured–you’ll see her front right foot is bandaged–and starving). At first, Penny had to hold Faith so that she would let little Fredrick nurse, but now Faith is cool with it. The vet reports that Fredrick’s blood work is excellent with plenty of colostrum. A.P. Indy Filly Brings $1.1 Million at F-T
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Monday, March 25, 2013 3:57 PM
An A.P. Indy filly became the first seven-figure purchase at the March 25 Fasig-Tipton Florida sale of selected 2-year-olds in training when she was acquired by Green Hills for $1.1 million.
Consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds as Hip No. 124, the filly was produced from the multiple stakes-winning Mr. Greeley mare Foxy Danseur. Bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms, the filly was purchased by Mayberry Farm for $300,000 from the Clearsky consignment to the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale.
Barbara Montanye signed the ticket when buying the filly March 25 at the Fasig-Tipton sale. During the pre-sale workouts, the filly had one of the co-fastest workout times of :10 for one-eighth of a mile.

Bernardini Colt Tops F-T Sale at $1.6 Million
By Esther Marr, The Blood-Horse Updated: Monday, March 25, 2013 3:40 PM
A bay colt by Bernardini became the new sale topper at the Fasig-Tipton Florida select sale of 2-year-olds in training when he was bought for $1.6 million by prominent New York owner Robert LaPenta.
Consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, agent, as Hip No. 131, he was bred in Kentucky by Masaichiro Abe.
The $1.6 million colt is the first offspring produced by the Forestry mare Hishi Aspen, a $300,000-plus earner in Japan during her race career. Hishi Aspen’s other foal is a yearling Corinthian filly.
During his first trip through the auction ring, the Bernardini colt was acquired for $250,000 by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale from Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

Haskin’s Derby Trail: A Legacy to John Nerud
Steve Haskin Hangin’ with Haskin The Blood-Horse 25 Mar 2013 3:03 PM
If you’ve been following this year’s Kentucky Derby trail, you no doubt will recognize the names Verrazano, Orb, Flashback, Will Take Charge, Govenor Charlie, Normandy Invasion, Mr. Palmer, Super Ninety Nine, He’s Had Enough, Shakin It Up, Capo Bastone, and My Lute.
What they have in common is they all carry the John Nerud influence in their pedigree, mainly through the descendents of Fappiano and Dr. Fager and continuing through Unbridled and Quiet American. It is the last two on which we will concentrate, as they both reflect the true genius of Nerud, who celebrated his 100th birthday this year. What is ironic is that Nerud never believed in the Derby and ran only one horse in the race – Gallant Man in 1957.

Dominguez to Continue Therapy Following MRI
By Ashley Herriman NYRA Press Release | 03/25/2013 03:47 PM ET
Following an appointment with his neurosurgeon on March 25, jockey Ramon Dominguez said he will continue physical and cognitive therapy for a fractured skull sustained in a spill at Aqueduct Racetrack on January 18.
“I had an MRI and saw my doctor this morning,” said the three-time reigning Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Jockey. “While he is very pleased with the progress I have made, I am not completely healed and need to continue my therapy. I feel very good physically and mentally, but my injury was serious and I need to take more time to allow myself to fully recover.”
Dominguez said he would continue to follow-up with his doctors, and that there is no timetable for his return to riding.
“I miss riding and I’m excited to come back when my doctors release me,” Dominguez said. “It’s hard because I feel so good, but I know I need to be patient and focus on my recovery.”

dear Kathy would be wonderful to see black caviar back ascot again and a date with the great one!!! could you please send some of your warmer weather over here we’re all freezing!!!hugs sheena
Kathy R.
Dear Sheena and Black Caviar fans: I think we’ll know more about Ascot once the TJ Smith is run and won. Neil Werrett was talking with Sean Cosgrove on Skysportsradio this morning and he said they’re (the connections) going with a race by race situation. They had a phone hook-up with Peter Moody on Sunday and agreed with this game plan. He (Werrett) certainly still has Ascot on the agenda and a meeting with Frankel – but will not make a decision on a stallion until he has taken advice from what he termed “my close friends in the industry”. He did go on to say that they would not be looking at reducing the speed in Nelly’s genes, and that the final choice may not necessarily be one of the top stallions. All very teasing! He does have connections with Vinery and Kitchwin Hills, so I guess they will figure in the stallion prospect discussions.
On the weather thing, I’ll do my best to rearrange the highs/lows and send you some warm stuff. New Zealand is now in drought and having a really tough time without their usual rain, so will see if the Kiwis can come to the weather party as well. Hugs, KathyR.
Max
Kathy R. You will recall the foal from Makybe Diva’s date with Galileo? There are no guarantees in breeding. It’s all mostly hope and magic.
Kathy R.
Dear Max: Oh yes, dear Rockstardom – think he’s only had a win and some placings at country meetings – stunning looking fellow ($1.5m in the sale ring). But then again so far none of the Diva’s offspring have been at all outstanding. She had a filly (La Dolce Diva by Fusaichi Pegasus who went for $1.2m) and is now a broodmare after failing with Mark Kavanagh, failed to get in foal with More Than Ready in 2010 and produced a colt by Lonhro in 2011. And a colt to Encosta De Lago in 09. Have said before, the comment is that the best mares leave it all behind on the racetrack. All the more reason to appreciate their splendour when and while they’re racing. Cheers KathyR.

A Birthday Poem for Tasty Temptation

Dear Tasty Temptation,
Though you haven’t yet foaled,
We’ve been told
This is a day for celebration,
For it’s your own birthday!
We hope nothing stands in the way
Of festivities for you today,
But we also pray
That your little one,
Be it a bay,
A chestnut, a brown,
Or a gray,
Will not much longer delay
To say
“Okay!
Everybody make way!
I’m coming down
The gangway!”
Happy birthday, Tasty, aka Chocolate, and many, many more!
