Q:
I have a question about the colts. When is the decision typically made whether to geld or leave them intact, and what factors go into that decision?
Nancy Schaffer
Tucson, AZ
A:Typically we will never geld a colt before it leaves the farm, either for the sales or to be broken in, unless there is a medical issue involved. We often have a good idea that they may become geldings fairly soon into their training careers though! Some colts are definitely more “studdish” than others.
Buyers usually don’t want to purchase a yearling gelding, as this will often indicate they have a difficult temperament. On top of that, this is a dreamers game—when someone buys a colt they like to think they have a shot at owning a horse that will have a stellar racing career and go on to leave his legacy as a stud.
Some of the colts that are headstrong and studdish as yearlings improve once they are in training and they have a job to do. With the horses that don’t settle down, it becomes a question of whether you can get the horse to train and race to his full ability if his mind is not on the game and he’s fractious and difficult to handle. If the answer is no, then often he will be gelded at this point.
The other reason to geld a colt is if they are clearly not going to compete at the levels that would then lead to a career at stud. A gelding is usually easier to handle and deal with on a daily basis. I know a lot of people will say they have had difficult geldings or easy colts, and of course that can be the case but generally it’s easier to have a gelding in the shed row, especially when there are fillies in the barn.

Rachel Alexandra Returns to Stonestreet
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: March 26, 2013, 4:11 PM ET
Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year, returned to Stonestreet Farm March 26 to begin the next stage of her recuperation following abdominal surgery performed mid-February at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington.
The 7-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro was hospitalized one day after the Feb. 12 delivery of her second foal, a filly by Bernardini. The filly is healthy and has bonded well with a nurse mare while her multiple Grade 1-winning dam continues to recover.
According to a release, Stonestreet employees decorated her stall with cards from fans as they awaited her arrival, and a get-well banner from Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots stretched across the barn to welcome the hard-fighting champion home.
“Having Rachel home is a milestone in her recovery,” said owner Barbara Banke. “I am deeply grateful to Drs. [Brett] Woodie, [Bonnie] Barr, [Steve] Reed and the entire Rood & Riddle team for the unparalleled care Rachel has received. A special thank you to Alex Riddle for keeping Rachel’s fans updated on her progress and to Medicine Technician Brent Comer for his dedication to her care.”

California Horse Racing Board warns of contaminated Purina feed; 48 positives found
By Steve Andersen Daily Racing Forum Updated on 03/26/2013 6:30PM
ARCADIA, Calif. – Several brands of sweet feed produced for horses at a Purina mill in Turlock, Calif., contain the banned medication zilpaterol and resulted in 48 positives earlier this year, the California Horse Racing Board has announced.
Zilpaterol, listed as a Class 3 medication, is a feed supplement that promotes muscle gain in livestock.
The racing board on Tuesday said that the 48 positives have been found in runners at all California tracks. Currently, there are four venues operating in the state – Thoroughbreds at Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita, Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos, and Standardbreds at Cal-Expo.
The racing board said the contaminations occurred in mid-February and were first detected from a sample taken from a horse who raced on March 1. Executive director Kirk Breed has recommended to the racing board that the cases be dismissed.

Dear Keta and Z Fans:
My gosh. Makes you wonder about other positive tests in the past. Who would ever think that the feed would be contaminated. Hugs, JB
Kathy R.
Dear Judy and Keta: Very interesting. We had an issue a little while back with trainers insisting the positive test result came about because of contaminated feed. In this case, I gather all the testing could not prove the issue conclusively in favour of the trainer. My memory may be playing me tricks (and I certainly don’t want to badmouth anyone) but I think Ortensia was caught up in an issue of this nature. Hugs KathyR.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
There was something a while ago on two trainers’ (can’t remember who they were or the horses names, but I think they were California trainers) horses testing positive. Both of them denied using any drugs. Maybe this contaminated feed was the culprit. Hugs, JB
Keta
Judy B & Kathy R
That is one of the reasons I posted this.
First, as an alert to horse owners who might use this feed
Second, as information on how testing can get bad results from a
very unexpected source
There were 48 tests that are now being thrown out.

Black Caviar sibling goes up for sale
Chris Roots The Age March 28, 2013
The next generation of the Black Caviar family will pass though the Inglis sale ring next month – and the expectation is he will break the record price paid for a yearling in Australia.
Lot 131, a Redoute’s Choice colt out of Helsinge, will be the highlight of the first day of the Easter sale on April 9 at Newmarket, in Sydney.
Black Caviar was the result of a mating between Bel Esprit and Helsinge.
The Australian record of $3 million for a yearling is jointly held by a Redoute’s Choice colt out of Deja Slew in 2006 and a Rock Of Gibraltar colt out of L’On Vite in 2007.

Dear Keta: Saw him on TVN programme Thoroughbreds with Tara Madgwyk (I think that’s how she spells it) and Caroline Searcy – it’s a really good programme. Yesterday I got one of those crazy “give me your credit card details and I’ll send you money” letters – personally addressed, but the money was $38m US. Told my husband we were going to get the cash and head for the Inglis sale ring and get ourselves Lot 131. Needless to say he told me to stop dreaming!
Kathy R.
Dear Keta
I think the Rock of Gibraltar/L’On Vite colt was called Mount Olympus and raced very briefly with Gai Waterhouse – was gelded and sold on after performing very, very poorly. I’ve actually seen the colt here in Canberra with a local trainer – the horse has had only 1 win when racing up north and just doesn’t seem to have his heart in it. But is the most magnificent animal one would see in a long march. Just another of those things that shows that brilliant breeding doesn’t necessarily translate into performance on the track. Hugs KathyR.

Frankel opens door to Caviar, other southerners
John Holloway The Age March 28, 2013
It has been confirmed England’s wonder horse, Frankel, will be available to serve 20-25 southern hemisphere broodmares this year, which opens the door for a covering of Black Caviar even if she bypasses Royal Ascot.
Juddmonte Farms general manager Phillip Mitchell told London’s Telegraph earlier this week interest from Australian and New Zealand breeders had exceeded expectations and Frankel’s owner, Prince Khalid Abdullah, had given his consent.
“We have had a huge interest in Frankel from the southern hemisphere,” Mitchell said. ”We have decided to make him available to a very small and select group of mares, which is something we have done in the past with Dansili and Oasis Dream. We have had no contact direct contact with the owners of Black Caviar, but if at some time they would like to discuss a visit to Frankel, we would be very happy to have that discussion.”
Frankel will have a harem of 135 mares in his first season at Juddmonte Farms’ Banstead Manor Stud in England at a fee of £125,000 (180,000). It is believed Frankel’s fee for the southern breeders would be £100,000, to assist with travel and insurance costs to England

Dear Dumplings & Z-sters,
Here is something to start the day
Love of Horses Author Unknown
If it is in your blood to love horses, you share your life with them.
Our horses know our secrets; we braid our tears into their manes and whisper our hopes into their ears.
A barn is a sanctuary in an unsettled world, a sheltered place where life’s true priorities are clear: someone who loves us, and the luxury of regular meals.
Some of us need these reminders.
When you step back, it’s not just about horses – it’s about love, life, and learning.
On any given day, a friend is celebrating the birth of a foal, a blue ribbon, or recovery from an illness.
That same day, there is also loss: a broken limb, a case of colic, a decision to sustain a life or end it gently.
As horse people, we share the accelerated life cycle of horses: the hurried rush of life, love, loss, and death that caring for these animals brings us.
When our partners pass, it is more than a moment of sorrow.
We mark our loss with words of gratitude for the ways our lives have been blessed.
Our memories are of joy, awe, and wonder. Absolute union.
We honor our horses for their brave hearts, courage, and willingness to give.
To those outside our circle, it must seem strange.
To see us in our muddy boots, who would guess such poetry lives in our hearts?
We celebrate our companions with praise worthy of heroes.
Indeed, horses have the hearts of warriors and often carry us into and out of fields of battle.
Those who know them understand how fully a horse can hold a human heart.
Together, we share the pain of sudden loss and the lingering taste of long-term illness.
We shoulder the burden of deciding when or whether to end the life of a true companion.
In the end, we’re not certain if God entrusts us to our horses – or our horses to us.
Does it matter?
We’re grateful God loaned us the horse in the first place.

There has been so much press about this pairing.
Lots of talk about Nelly running in Ascot.
This was the story I have been waiting for–Prince Khalid Abdullah, had given his consent. Until this, it has been nothing more than speculation.
Frankel will be getting a shorter vacation than planned.
But, it gives more mares an opportunity to have a Frankel Foal
