Q:
We’re curious about the weaning process. Is separation done gradually over several weeks, or is it a fast process? If the latter, how do you deal with the mares’ and foals’ distress and stop them from, say, hurting themselves, when separated and perhaps trying to get back to each other? It seems like weaning would be awfully hard on the human handlers, too.
Trish & Mike
Highlands Ranch, CO
A: The weaning process starts between five and six months of age at Lane’s End. At this stage weaning has started to begin naturally—the foals will be playing and socializing with their buddies more and more and be quite independent when they are turned out.
We typically wean early in the morning so we have a whole day to observe the mares and the foals and make sure they are handling it well. The weaned mares and foals are on opposite sides of the farm so that they are unable to hear each other. This actually makes the separation much easier on both when there isn’t a constant reminder. They stay with the groups they have been with for the last few months so they draw comfort from each other, and it really is only a matter of a few days before they are happily settled into their new routine.
The weanlings continue to come into the barn everyday and have already been taught to eat on their own before being weaned, so their routine is much the same as before. They will be checked over and have their temp taken and their feet picked before going back out in the afternoon with their pals.

Do they really use Vicks Vapo rub in the nostrils so the scent goes away?
This make me sad that Zenny won’t see lil Z ever again.
Kathleen
You really can’t impose human feelings on our 4 hooved friends. We’re geared to take care of our children for many many years…………horses don’t. I’ve put mothers and daughters and sisters together in paddocks, and they generally hang with horses other than the ones they’re related to.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Very important point, human feelings do not have a place being projected on to horses in their horse world.
If we don’t speak horse, which every one at LE does very well, we will not
be able to know how horses feel or what they are experiencing.
I watched Monty Roberts try to connect with a horse about 10 years old that had never been “spoken to by a human in his horse language”. It was so very sad
to watch his dissconnect with Monty and Monty describe his “pain” at not
being heard or spoken to. for so many year.
However, it was a real joy when he heard Monty “speak ” to him and how he just perked up and could not believe a human was really able to speak “horse”.
Kathleen
I have a much higher opinion of Buck Brannaman. I’ve always said it was our job to understand the horse, and to communicate on a level that they understand. My horses are happy and well mannered.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
So very true Kathleen,
Monty is one that impresses me, but their are many other trainers
that have training, speaking philosophies that work from horses
and humans.
Zenyen
Not for weaning.
The only time I have heard of Vicks Vapo rub or a similar ‘scent masking’ trick being used is when a farm is attempting to get an orphan foal on a nurse mare.
Zenyatta will have her hooves full with Z13 when that little one is born. In the meantime she will have her girlfriends to relax and laze away the late summer months.
Kathleen
In the world of show horses, we have used it on occasion to keep the stallions from losing focus.
Zenyen
That would definitely be a useful purpose yes!! :D
HeidiK (Vallejo, Ca)
My dad used “Tiger balm” on the show stallions. It worked very well.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Yes, Kathleen, at our barn we used it to keep the stallions focused
on the task so they could smell the mare in season.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Great idea, Heidi K !!!
Ann
That Tiger Balm is some strong stuff!

To all of those who are being so critical of Lane’s End and the weaning process: Have you ever worked on a breeding farm and seen first hand how the process works? Have you ever seen how poor a mare’s body condition can get if the foal is left by her side too long? Do you have any experience at all in the horse industry and understand mother nature’s part in the process? Or are you simply offering your uneducated and emotional opinion? I have worked on several breeding farms, Lane’s End being one of them. There is nothing abnormal about their approach nor is it in any way cruel or harmful. They are professionals who have been in this industry for many years. They are well educated and very experienced. I suggest that you take the time to first research the topic that you so strongly bash before you make a fool of yourselves again. Or perhaps you should call them up and tell them how wrong their highly qualified staff are and inform them of ALL of your experience that proves their methods wrong. Don’t get hurt feelings when they laugh and hang up on you.
And for the record, separating as far as possible is best when weaning. Foals will be less anxious, will calm down faster and are much less likely to injure themselves if they can’t see or hear Mom.
Kathleen
LOL, I did ask someone if they would care to share their source of expertise on the subject of horse husbandry? To be fair, though, people love this horse and they can only associate their human feelings to her. Yes, some people do get their bloomers in a bunch over things they know nothing of, and others are crusaders…………the dead give away on them is they refer to Zenny as a ‘Cash Cow’ or ‘Breed mare’……whew. These are people who know nothing of the Mosses love for their horse.
Linda Sain
Yes, I worked in breeding for 20 years. Mares keep conditioning if you feed them right. We’ve had foals on mares who were 7 & 8 months old because of a sudden injury requiring stall rest causing weaning to be postponed.
The humane way to wean is to divide the mares and foals with a fence. They can see and touch each other but the foals can’t nurse. You leave an old nurse mare in with the foals. It is hardly traumatic at all and typically neither lose any conditioning during the process.
They hang around each other across the fence for a day or two and then wander off.
Stevie
Have you done it the normal way?
They’re fine, honestly!
The thought of them touching each other through a fence terrifies me just as much as the normal method seems to terrify you.
More than one way to skin a cat!
Pati- Prince Z Future TC Winner
I thought we were weaning foals not skinning cats… :-P
Linda Sain
Yep, I’ve done it the normal way where they both whinny and whinny and run and run.
The fencing has to be adequate where they can only touch each other over the top not between the boards.
Think about it logically. What is less traumatic – where you suddenly separate the two so they can’t hear or see each other or just make it to where the foal can’t nurse?
Pati- Prince Z Future TC Winner
Baby Z is so independent anyway. After a few hours, he’ll be fine. He isn’t using mom as life support, and will probably do the best of all the foals.
Ann
Pati…..LOL!
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Linda,
One of the barns I rode at, the trainer had a PhD in animal science, and started the weaning process as you suggested. It worked very well to get them eating separately but still next to each other. She did separate them eventually, but not much calling, I think because she did the above and they were already used to eating in separate stalls.

Ok I’m confused….I understand the separation during weaning, but once 12Z is weaned he doesn’t hang out with his mom anymore? Are they separated forever? I will admit I know nothing about weaning, so I will trust Lane’s End experts, since that’s why they are there, and well that’s their job! I don’t think anyone on Team Z would do anything to hurt Z-Girl or 12Z, and that “Cash Cow” statement was very mean, didn’t your mother ever teach you, if you didn’t have anything nice to say you shouldn’t say anything?
So back to my burning question…….once they are separated that’s it, Mom and son don’t play, or hang out? I hope someone will help me to understand this procedure.
GirlSaratoga is confused!
Kathleen
They will part company forever. She will hang with her girlfriends, have z13 in March or so, and start the process over again.
GirlSaratoga
Kathleen:
Thanks for the not so happy news! :-( That’s kind of what I thought from all the posts! But It was very nice of you to answer my burning question. I appreciate the clarification!
Zenyen
Once Z12 is weaned he will go forward with his life as a young racing prospect and Zenyatta will continue her life as a beloved, retired broodmare.
They will not meet again but Z12 will have his buddies to play with and grow up with for at least another year until he goes into training.
This is the same way that Zenyatta and her dam’s lives diverged at weaning time and as you can see Zenyatta grew up and went on to do brilliant things and was loved and cherished all along the way. Z12 is lucky in that the Mosses will retain ownership of him and he will be cherished and loved just as his mother has been.

I’m a little bummed right now. I submitted the name Jess’s Dream in the contest to name Rachel Alexandra’s colt and I saw on fb where that’s the name they picked. I figured there had to be a lot of people that entered that name, but I still got really excited, but it said on Rachel’s fb page that her friend Thor Stables won. I thought it sounded kind of fishy that her friend won, but now they’re saying Sam Bucholz won. Anyway, enough of my whining. I can’t wait to hear what they’re going to name Z12. Dear GirlSaratoga: (My favorite Race Track)
Do you know the names of the Dams for each of the yearlings or what sale they were in and when? The year they were born? Skip Away, unfortunately, passed away on May 14, 2010, so the Hip No. 440 colt may not be a yearling. I don’t know for sure if any of his foals were born in 2010.
The Pedigree Query website Progeny for Skip Away lists foals born in 2009, but none in 2010; but they’re not always up to date. One of Skip Away’s sons who was born in 2009 out of Watt Ever was in training in New York this year and sustained a minor injury; he is healing and expected to return to training soon. His name is Circuitous. I will see if I can find out what sale he was in and the Hip No.
The Progeny for Real Quiet lists thirty plus (I stopped counting) fillies born in 2010. If you have any of the above info, we will probably be able to track them. Hugs, JB

Rachel Alexandra’s first foal named Jess’s Dream, in honor of the late Jess Jackson
Here are excerpts from the article
Posted: Friday, July 27, 2012 6:56 PM
The first foal out of 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra has been named Jess’s Dream, a moniker chosen from suggestions submitted in a fan naming contest.
More than 6,500 people entered the contest to name the bay colt, who was foaled on January 22.
Barbara Banke of Stonestreet Farm made the announcement on Friday at Saratoga Race Course, following the running of the Curlin Stakes. Banke was the wife of the late Jess Jackson, who campaigned both Curlin and Rachel Alexandra to their championships in Stonestreet’s colors. Jackson died in April 2011.
“It was Jess’s dream to see this baby,” Banke said.
Samuel Bucholtz of Chino, California was among the multiple people who submitted the winning name, and won a drawing to visit Stonestreet Farm for a weekend.

Overwhelming is what my doctor told me my first year would be like after the loss of my husband. Brian was killed February 15th 2005 at 8:30am.
As you can see that after several years no amount of time takes away the loss. I am not telling you this to make you feel bad or upset you. I just want you to know that only time will build up a kind of tolerance that will allow you to move forward. A tolerance to try and live again, Family and my good friends help or at least they try. I have made a connection with this horse Zenyatta that may seem ridiculous to others. Zenyatta was racing and winning over and over. I got so attached to her and then the Moses allowed her story to continue. I do not believe God takes away. I believe God adds to our lives. He can even add a horse from the opposite side of the country named Zenyatta to give his child me and you a place to rest. I find rest with her and the others that love her so. We will see Russ and Brian again someday. Until then thank God for Zenyatta. Love Sue

By 5 – 6 months my mares have been ready to move on w/out their babies and some in fact would start to kick @ them and chase them away if they tried to nurse or hang around too much, so please don’t be judging that this is too early. Not every mare will kick her baby @ 6 mos, but most will by not too long after that. And Baby Z will probably remember his humans more than his mom–just the way it is. Our babies always knew us, but they could come back home (from the track) and mom was just another horse to them.

I must say the negative comments surprise me. Sure I would think a few folks that have no idea about the weaning process might feel it is awful. Horses are not Humans. Yes they certainly feel and yes the mares and weanlings are going to be going through an adjustment BUT the Lane’s End staff know what they are doing. It is BEST to get the mares and weanlings far enough away from each other (distance) so they do not hear each other call. The stress of calling and hearing but can not find one another can cause physical accidents (attempting going through a fence or gate- hurting themselves in the process). Z will have her mare friends and Prince Z will have the other weanlings. He seems like quite the outgoing young “man”. Is it me or does he not give out the vibe “Heh Check ME out- I AM SOMETHING SPECIAL”!!! His being weaned is important for his emotional/intellecutal well being to begin the next part of the journey in his Life. I would NEVER believe the Mosses will race him UNTIL HE IS READY- in EVERY WAY- PHYSICAL AND MENTAL. Zenyatta was not ready as a two year old – how lucky we all were that John did not race her until she was mature enough for the task and WHAT A GRAND RACEHORSE she became! Think of all the JOYS, WONDERMENT, EXCITEMENT AND TOTAL THRILLS we would have missed if she was started too soon. Look back at the video (HGTV?) when Z had Prince Z- Ann Moss was laying in the straw with him- LOVING HIM – EXPRESSING HER LOVE TO HIM- her AFFECTION and LOVE is clear. Many have said they hope to see him in the triple crown races when he is 3 and if he is ready then so be it. BUT I would much rather the Mosses bring him to the track when he is ready- if he is ANYTHING like Z (she burned up the tracks) what a GREAT thing that will be for all of us. Let Prince Z be who he is and lets not pressure him to be the next “triple crown winner” (unless he is ready – then I say GREAT). Not all offspring are as excellent as their parents on the track- oh he is looking really good right now – and we can have high hopes and watch his workout times and finally his debut. I certainly would like to see him get on the track and ROCK EVERYONE’S WORLD! The Mosses are NOT FOOLS nor are they HEARTLESS or in this just for GLORY, MONEY OR FAME. Mr Moss already made his money in the record business. They love Zenyatta dearly- when they speak of her- the LOVE is there- they are sincere. The chose to have Zenyatta and Prince Z in one of the best places in the country (Lane’s End). If they were not pleased with the care that Lane’s End provide the would MOVE THEM to another facility. They can certainly AFFORD to make a change if they thought it needed to be done. I am sure the staff will be keeping a little bit of an extra eye on both Z and Prince Z at first- not to the point of ignoring their other clients of course. Instead of finding fault let us all PRAY that all goes well for Z and her Prince during this transition and also for Prince Z as he grows to be what he was born to be. Also Pray for Zenny as she not only transitions to “being with the girls” but also for her and her unborn foal. Before we know it Prince Z will have a little “brother” or “sister” (not full – I guess half seeing both of them Zenny’s babies). Hopefully we will get a few pics occasionally as he continues to grow and also of Zenny with her new baby bump and new foal.
Thank You to ALL the Folks at Lane’s End and Zenyatta.com for all the pictures and updates. There are lots of people that will ALWAYS LOVE ZENYATTA and Prince Z and any other Baby Z’s in the future. We will never tire of seeing pictures of and hearing about her and her babies. :)

Debra,
If you read the March 12 or 13, 2012 diary the day after Zenny had 12 Z,
it was all about his everyone “difficulty” with her weaning him.
I am sure all of this “commotion”, was a part
of why Dottie closed the diary and handed the baton back to The Mosses, who then
handed it to Lanes End for some appropriate education on breeding, broodmare,
foaling and all that goes into these processes.

Thanks for the update and answer regarding the weaning process. It is so hard for us not to anthropomorphize in regard to our dear Zenyatta and young Z12 because we love them both so much. I must admit that I’ve never been around a mare and foal at weaning time so I don’t know much about the matter other than what I’ve read in books and heard from friends who have horses, but I have every confidence in the capable folks there at Lane’s End to do what is right for our Queen. Having watched a dog wean her puppies, though I’m sure there are some similarities. The young ones are eating regular food, relying less and less on the mother’s milk for any nutritional value and at some point, the mama just says that is enough and moves away when the young pup, or I would guess, a foal, tries to nurse. Day by day they’re spending less time dwelling on each other – pups or foals are playing with those of their age group, learning to get along, and moms are getting a chance to relax. At least this is how it goes in my experience with dogs and I’m guessing with horses. Of course, my heart is hoping that it is not traumatic for either Zenny or Z12, but even if they call for each other for a little bit, they will be in safe pastures where they cannot be injured. I do kind of like the idea of being separated by a fence, but it would have drawbacks also so I guess there just isn’t an easy way to do it. I sincerely do hope, however, that the generous people at Lane’s End will continue to update us on both our little prince and the beautiful Queen. It will be so fun to watch Zenyatta grow through another pregnancy and also to see our little colt turn into the wonderful horse he is going to be. Thank you once again to the wonderful Mosses and to all those at Lane’s End who take care of our loved ones.

Thanks LE for another answer to a very compelling question. We have no doubt 12Z and Zenny will be handled profesionally and carefully during this natural process.
We just hope the Mosses allow us to continue to be close to both Zenny and her prince through this forum. It has been a blessing to thousands.

Wow–I took an evening off to watch Olympics, and I’m way behind.
Thank you, LE and Donna, for answering the question we had been knowing was the “next step” for both Z and Baby Z. I’m sure it will go well.
It does seem odd that so many suggested the name for RA’s baby, and only one was chosen. Maybe he was the first to submit the name? Don’t know.
Prayers for safety all racing this weekend and Olympians competing. So much going on to help us through this miserable heat.
Hugs to all.
Z and Baby Z.–love you always.

I read that they took all the names of people that had suggested the name chosen, put them in a hat and picked one.

Rachel Alexandra picked the winner !!!
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
The one chosen for a visit with Rachel was chosen from a “hat” by Rachel from all the submissions with that name and there were quite a few people who suggested that name.
Rachel chose the person who is going to visit her. Just like Zenny does.

I suggested “Jackson’s Vision.”. Close but no Cigar. (No pun intended.) Jess Jackson’s dreams and visions made enormous contributions to horseracing, and it was exciting to see him honored today at Saratoga. Whether this little foal becomes a racehorse or not, he has already made history as the offspring of two Horses of the Year. What a treat to see him and little Z12 be born in the same year!
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Really like your name, too, Harriett.
Very beautiful !!!
Sorry maybe you can visit Cigar at the KY horse park ???
Debbie G/Kentucky
That’s a great name, Harriett!

When I was 12, my uncle gave us a horse. She had a year old colt still nursing and was bony as could be. It took her two years to get back to good weight and health.
The process Lane’s End describes sounds about as good as it gets. They give them a month or so longer together than some other farms, they keep the mares and foals with their friends so there’s not a lot of change at one time, they acquaint the foals with feeding so they at least have an idea of what they should do.
Thank you for the information. How long will the foals stay at Lane’s End before they leave for training?
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Karen,
Great point, nursing human or animal take a lot away nutritionally from the
foal or human. Especially when the nutritional value of the milk decreases
at 3 months of age. That poor mare was not able to make enough milk to provide nutrition for the foal and depleted her own nutrition. Very sad.

I’m surprised at some the rather curt replies to those ppl who truly have expressed their concerns about the weaning of Baby Z . . . if everyone was knowledgeble on the subject, there would be no need for the “experts” . . . I don’t see anyone BLAMING Lane’s End for how the weaning process is carried out . . . don’t be so defensive ppl!!! What I see here is truly caring ppl who are simply looking for answers to their questions . . . and they have turned to the experts for those answers . . . no need to be so rude to caring ppl . . . try using a bit of “kindness” as opposed to “arrogance” in your responses in your attempts to educate folks. Thanks . . .

No one is using arrogance to answer for the people who truly don’t know. Many of these people are merely restating what LE has only said above. I, myself, didn’t know how the process works until now either and I have had many people educate me on this site about the various ways of the thoroughbred world. How you choose to take it is up to you. You is universal you, I’m not targeting you specifically.
The people who arrive on scene and start telling of the “proper way” to wean foals and how LE is wrong are the people who get the responses you are reading. LE has a proven and effective method they have used for years and never was it questioned until Zenyatta’s baby was the one being weaned. If this was any other horse, there wouldn’t be nearly this many people trying to accuse LE of being cruel. Of course, there will always be sadness surrounding a separation of Z from her foals as she is one of the most beloved horses of all time, but LE does not, and should never, be lectured as to how to do their job. When push comes to shove, Baby Z is a horse just like Spooky’s baby, and the other colt they share a pasture with. Now when we add our emotions to it, Baby Z does indeed become special. He is and always will be. That’s doesn’t mean that LE is rushing to wean. They are treating him like every other horse they have ever had, and he will be just fine. Z was weaned from V the exact same way and she developed healthy, strong, and has no vices. If Baby Z got any part of his mom, he will do just fine, and Z could have cloned herself with this baby.

Salutations, LE! Thank You from the bottom of my heart for your continued loving care of Zenyatta, she gets the very best care with you! Thank You for continuing to share her progress and that of her 2012 foal with us in the general public, We know you do not have to, you are so gracious to continue to do so!

Dear Max,
Here is a wonderful article about one of Big D’s sons, Point of Entry, who could
be a son representing the Dyanformer line at stud in the future.

Big D. info and Duct tape….you can never have enough.
Max
Sign. I love this article and very glad to see it again. Big D and family are the best.
Ann. Right on about Big D and duct tape. Once you are hooked on either, there is no escape.
Ann
Max, I ran this by Sign on another spot, but…..that Lucarno guy is a great candidate for BA Tuesdays. No worries w/ him tagging along!
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Max and Ann,
I think Big D could come to Little Woodrow’s on Tuesday celestially, he had a BA, too. He would have to have a muzzel, but maybe he would be affectionate as he was in his last days.
Max
Ann and Sign. Big D would rule on Big Ass Tuesdays, but they would have to change the name to Bad Ass Tuesday. I am in the camp that says the attitude change in his final days was a ruse by Big D to get in some last licks ( make that kicks or bites) before heading to pastures new. I love it in the video of Lucarno where that English guy refers to Dynaformer as being called “Big D in America.” Never forgotten, Big D.

What a beautiful name for Rachel’s boy. I’m so looking forward to Zenyatta’s colt getting his official racing name……
My husband and I were on a sheep ranch in New Zealand and were staying in a beautiful cottage on their property. I was in heaven. Horses, lambs, cows. Little did we know that the evening before they began “weaning the little lambs” from their Moms. Their bleating throughout the night was so pitiful and didn’t allow for much sleep! The ranchowner apologized to us and said, “hopefully in another night or two” they will be done. That was my “city girl” introduction to separating the Moms from their babies. I confess it sounded very sad and I could hardly look the little lambs in the eye.
Dear Z and baby Z, I hope it goes well for you both as well as the others at Lane’s End. Thanks so much for sharing the farm news.

Dear Delrene,
I so very much love the name “Jess’s Dream” for TACO. It is a wonderful, touching tribute to a wonderful man who had the vision and the $$$$ to bred to HOY and create this wonderful colt. Hope he and 12 Z meet on the track, that will be great fun!!!!!
Arlene,
There were numerous submissions for that name, they put them all in a hat and Rachel chose one of them to visit with her and “TACO”.

Dear TC, GP,
Got back to the Redneck jokes, also love the one about the Redneck hospital and the maternity ward, will share it with my midwife friend, she will get a great kick out of
it.
As president of the Texas Chapter of the RNC, I vote Debbie G 4.98 half-moons and an opportunity to come to Houston for the next Redneck Games at Big Woodrow’s.
Also, right on with extra money for Redham to “expedite” perhaps by FEDEX, IHA to Japan.
Ann
Uh Oh, Sign is sweetin the pot…..a trip to the RN games at BIG Woodrows. I might have to reconsider???? Do they serve corn on the cob?

Thank you, sign! I’m REALLY excited now. A trip to the Redneck Games! That would be heaven on earth!

I just wanted to say, reading these wonderful posts from the LE folks, and the various inputs from the Z fans, that it makes me feel rather sad in relation to Black Caviar. Much as she is loved by many in the racing industry here in Australia, once the decision is made to send her to the breeding barn, aside from news on her first foal, that will be the end. No wonderful website, no updates in the manner of the Z Team, because even though many folk over here love racing and particular horses, there is not the same emotion allowed in the industry. I guess I just wanted to remind you all, if somewhat clumsily, just how lucky you are to have had this connection with Zenyatta, and also how truly blessed you are to have people like Mr and Mrs Moss who will enable a site such as this. As I’ve said, I cannot imagine any Australian horse farm doing such a thing here. So heartfelt blessings to all of you. Best thoughts Kathy R.

Thank you Those are kind words. We are lucky and we love her. Maybe someone will start a web page for your special girl. Keep asking
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Thank you so much. We do know how fortunate we are to meet here and keep up with our Z.
Max
Kathy R. I cannot see Black Caviar trotting quietly into the sunset? She already has a great website and her own horse beauty products line. I had the impression that many Australians went to Ascot to see her run and that millions more watched her race on tv. Zenyatta set the standard for retired mares staying in contact with fans. Maybe Nelly will do the same in Aussie land when the time comes? She has already crushed the dreams of at least two suitors. Someone needs to chronicle her exploits both on the track and off. BC takes no prisoners in either location. She also models horse clothes like a pro.
Ann
Thank you Donna Vowles, for your wonderful addition to the Ask the Experts series.
