Q:
Does Coz have Zenyatta’s personality?
Jan Graff
Hull, GA
A: Yes, he’s similar to his mother. He’s so confident, and he’s confident like she is. Being a baby, that’s kind of rare. He’s very confident in himself and that’s encouraging.
Q:
At what point in a young horse’s training is he or she galloped fast enough to determine whether that horse looks promising?
Donna Richardson
California, MD
A: We don’t really ask for speed here. It’s more about their way of going. You get an idea, maybe three months from the start—this one has ability, this one not so much—but we don’t flat out go here. That’s for the trainer. We teach them how to run.
A farm environment is so different from the race track. There will be horses for whom the lightbulb just doesn’t go on yet. It has to do with their age too. They can take longer to mature—as they get to the racetrack that bulb is getting brighter. If it’s a mature horse and you get the idea that they know what they’re doing, you may be able to tell if they have promise, but there are a bunch of question marks in between.
Think of them as kids; we’re the elementary school.
Q:
What does Mayberry Farm’s do differently than other farms that break yearlings?
Elizabeth Ames
Palo Alto, CA
A: I think we have more of a hands on approach than other people in our position. My mom, my sister, my cousin, myself, we’re all hands on (note: April answered this question). There’s no training from the car or calling assistants or taking weekends off. It’s all day and all night. When there’s a sick horse, we get up at midnight and come out. We get to know our horses, we spend so much time with them.
We’ve also been on the racetrack, and we know where the horses are going. We came from there. Most people start at the farm and go to the race track; we did the opposite. We know what trainers want and what they’re looking for, so it gives us a little bit of an advantage in that regard.

What a wonderful ride with California Chrome and all the Sherman crowd. I was very disappointed but I had a feeling something would go wrong. As J. Sheriffs said after Z lost her last race “life is not perfect”. Art Sherman said the same thing. All the greats lost a race, even Secretariat and Man O’ War. I will always be grateful to have all the Art Sherman interviews on my favorites. I watch them many times over. I would like to recommend the HRTV with Zoe Cadman of 4-24-14 .” Beyond the Shedrow” with Art Sherman at Los Alamitos . Like being there in person. Cannot wait to hear CC is all rested and ready to run again. I hope his owner can concentrate on his great gift and really appreciate his great horse and not try to change l40 years of Triple Crown history. Records could not be compared if all is changed. I do hope he keeps his horses with the Sherman barn. Could not do better.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Nancy:
Very well said. Love and Hugs, JB
shirleeinindy
Well said, Nancy.
Hope he doesn’t go for the BC Classic this year as unless there are a lot of injuries, the older horse field is so strong. Will Take Charge, Palace Malice and Mucho Macho Man are all aiming toward that race.
Bekka
I agree. CC is my favorite male horse and Zen my favorite girl. They should breed! What an amazing horse that would make. CC ran his heart out for 5 weeks and just was plain worn out. I sure hope his cut heals and I cant wait to see him run in the BC, but that is a strong field with more experienced horses. If he could win that, he WOULD be champion!! He already is in my heart….the triple crown of MY heart.
Terry Crow
If that happened, Z would be a cougar.
Sally B. (Auntie cherishes Z and her young)
Thank you Judy B. for the link to the photos of CC’s injury. Excellent photography at the start.
I see this other horse’s jockey attempting to pull the reins as his horse is bearing left to CC. I can not believe that CC kept trying, keeping the pace, staying within reach, with this injury. I feel so bad for CC and I pray good things for him. CC has so much heart to run like he did with pain. I think he could have been better.
My heart sank with his loss. I could not imagine why he did not even place. Then we learn of what he ran with. Geez.
I believe CC’s owner although perhaps not quite appropriate right after the loss, had very good points that he made.
Only allow those who qualified for the Derby to race in the other two races.
It is unfair to allow owners to choose which one race they think their horse has the best chance to win when another horse begins with the Derby and runs all three. I understand that some owners are not looking for the Triple Crown, they may just want to win one of them for their advertising.
Not only that but how does a horse that had much lower points be allowed to come into the Belmont to race and then cause CC his injury. Unbelievable.
But, if that is true, how can things be judged for a Triple Crown winner?? Apples to apples, like my BFF and I discussed.
I will be looking for CC at the Breeders Cup and all my wishes and prayers will be for him and I will be rooting for him!!
hugs, Sally B

Dear Sally:
I think CC is an exceptional athlete and, as our Ann said, a Champion. He’s the Class of this year’s three year old crop. Hope he heals, enjoys his R & R and comes back strong in the BCC. Love this beautiful Chestnut boy. He’s all courage and heart; kept right on trying even with that cut. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. That is a nasty cut too from what I could see from the photo. Saw a video of Chromie leaving for home. He was walking well and he looked pretty good. Alert and curious. With some rest, he’ll bounce back. Never count out a chestnut. Maybe the C team should let the trainer do the talking in future? Sherman is a professional. The sons appear to be the same.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Yes, that cut looked very nasty. Chromie should heal and rest up and I hope he races Toni again in the BCC. Love our Prince of the Chestnut Club (Danny Boy is the King). Mr. Sherman seems to be a very classy guy. He’s a friend of our TC, so he must be. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. That Toni is something else. 17 hands at 3 years old. I’m amazed that he made to the classics. Big horses as we know are usually late bloomers. His owner said that Clement has taken his time with Toni and he had not raced much. He was also sick. His last race before Belmont was May 10. His blaze is quite distinctive too. He’s got Ribot on the distaff. Don’t come much better or badder than Ribi.
Free the Moose! Power up Danny! Power up CDA and Chromie too.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Great bloodlines in Tonalist. He’s a big, beautiful boy and showed he’s capable of running big (not just on a sloppy track). Great win for this son of Tapit and Joel Rosario. Would love to see CC and him race each other again with CC at 100%. Love and Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
Sally-Your points are well taken. In fact, the horse that caused the injury had NO points, if you use the KD qualification criteria.

Something interesting I learned this evening. You guys might already know this.
I started wondering about Affirmed’s son The Tin Man, whom I haven’t heard anything about in a long time. I always loved him.
The Tin Man is at Marty and Pam Wygod’s River Edge Farm in California. I was wondering where he was. Seems he is doing pretty well. But has a not so terrific knee that still gives him some trouble. Something that I didn’t know was that the Wygod’s campaigned Life is Sweet. Zenny’s Pal
The Tin Man seems to be enjoying his retirement. Just love keeping track of these greats.

Per my calendar, today June 9 is the 41st annivesary of Secretariat’s Belmont. Just an FYI for fellow Zsters.
Kathy
Right you are, Zfansandy. I’ll watch it on YouTube to commemorate the day.
Deb E.
In honor of our beloved Secrtariat and this special day, here’s the classic call of Red’s Belmont from the late Chic Anderson:
“They’re on the turn, and Secretariat is blazing along! The first three quarters of a mile in 1:09 and four-fifths! Secretariat is widening now! He is moving like a tremendous machine! Secretariat by twelve, Secretariat by fourteen lengths on the turn! Sham is dropping back. It looks like they’ll catch him today as My Gallant and Twice a Prince are both coming up to him now. But Secretariat is all alone! He’s out there almost a sixteenth of a mile away from the rest of the horses! Secretariat is in a position that seems impossible to catch. He’s into the stretch. Secretariat leads this field by 18 lengths, and now Twice a Prince has taken second and My Gallant has moved back to third. They’re in the stretch! Secretariat has opened up a 22 length lead! He is going to be the Triple Crown winner! Here comes Secretariat to the wire! An unbelievable, an amazing performance! He hits the wire 25 lengths in front! It’s going to be Twice a Prince second, My Gallant third, Private Smiles fourth and Sham, who had it today, dropped back to fifth. An unbelievable, an amazing performance from this miracle horse! And look at Mrs. Tweedy! She’s having the time of her life! Secretariat has smashed the mile and half track record by two and three-fifth seconds.”
After watching the replay of the race, Mr. Anderson was humble as he admitted it was hard to count the lengths as Red raced home: “I said it was 25, it could have conceivably been more.” It was, in fact, 31 lengths, a winning margin no horse has ever come close to matching or beating.

And no horse ever will!! Thanks for posting, still gives me goosebumps. hugs

What I remember about it was Penny Chenery’s reaction to it as she watched.
Max
TC. Never saw this race live, but it must have glorious to see. It’s jaw dropping to see the video. His last race at Woodbine was also totally spectacular. He was a record breaker on all surfaces. Regret only that he did not run at 5 or 6 when horses reach their prime.
Terry Crow
Max-Agree completely. Big Red would have been unequaled as an older horse, but all of the breeding commitments made by Penny Chenery could not wait. Money, as usual, reared its ugly head.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Deb E:
Thanks. No words do justice to describe this boy, but Mr. Anderson did a great job. Love and Hugs, JB
shirleeinindy
Unfortunately, I do not think we will ever see the like of Big Red again. You have to give credit to Sham who chased him in all the races and was not afraid to dance every one.

shirlee–In any other year, Sham would have been considered a superstar. His trainer, Pancho Martin, was not anything like the way he was depicted in the Secretariat movie.

June 9 Cherokee Devotional
Near is the lion on our path. But, if we turn around and face it straight-on, it will slink away. The sooner we learn that fear has no power but what we give it, the sooner we gain control of all our emotions. The Tsalagi may know fear, but his stoic expression will never reveal it. To a Cherokee, u na ye hi s di, fear or alarm, is the face of the enemy that tries to numb his mind and spirit to make it easier to conquer him. The lion’s roar is silenced the minute we face it down with our own ga na nv di s gi, war whoop, that shows we mean business. We have no intention to stand still and let fear open the door to worse things. By the faith words of our mouths we turn away, not only the lion, but all it represents.
I turn with a shout that we are saved!

Sad for CC but what a five weeks he gave us! It’s easy to say ‘that’s racing luck’ when the connections must be so disappointed. Hope we get to see CC race many times and win HOY. Thanks for the thrills handsome boy! The throne is vacant and waiting there for a Prince to take his rightful place. No changes are necessary because the challenges are what makes it such a special, special prize. With the progeny of the Queen, RA and HAG coming along I can hardly contain myself.

Dear Ann, Terry, Sue, Janet, Sandy and Z Fans:
Once Chromie is totally healed, I wonder if his connections would consider racing in the Travers Stakes on August 23rd. A lot of the same horses that ran in the TC races, including Tonalist, may be going in that one. I would love to have Chromie race at Saratoga and have another go at Tonalist without having to run with a bloodied foot. What do you think? Love and Hugs, JB

It takes a brave man to apologize on national TV for what was said in the heat of the moment. He was obviously passionate about CC but maybe will learn now that racing is more about winning and losing but the taking part.Kipling’s famous words come to mind “If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same.Hugs Sheena.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Loved that Sheena.
I think both these horses are just wonderful. They did such great jobs
Tonalist had some earlier issues with an illness and foot problems and California Chrome with racing with a hurt foot. Just love them both dearly. Think they both put all their heart into it.
Think Tonalist is beginning to blossom at the right time. And I think California Chrome is there. Think we better look out for these two down the road.
Max
Sheena. Just read that my fav Thousand Stars lost on the jumps in France. Mullins says that Abby expended too much energy on big jumps. Hoping for better results next time.
Admire your use of Kipling. Maybe now their 15 minutes is up and it’s time for DAP to let Sherman and Chromie do the talking? The Queen never gives interviews, nor does Brad Kelley. When Oxbow won the Preakness for Calumet in 2013, Kelley stayed home and said nothing. Focus only was on the horse. A wise policy.

Peggy. He’s got more in common with Big D than that. His great great grandfather on his momma’s side is Ribot, one of the great racers of all time. Won the Arc – twice. Ribi however was very fiery tempered. He could not tolerate the sight of another stallion and so he had to live alone. Hated the sight of cows. Farm had to move a herd of them out of his sight before he would calm down.
No one can fault this colt’s breeding either. Three Triple Crown winners – Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Nijinsky. He’s also inbred to Northern Dancer. Pleasant Colony is his dam sire. Excellent distaff pedigree.
Free the Moose! Power up Danny! Power up CDA, Chromie and all others who are sick.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
Thank You so much for all the information on Ribot. I have to look him up and read more.
Max
Peggy. Ribot is a super horse as is another who was bred by Federico Tesio, Nearco. Nearco was also undefeated and the grand sire of Northern Dancer. An interesting fact is that Northern Dancer is not named after his illustrious sire line. His owner chose to name him after his maternal grandfather, Native Dancer, the Gray Ghost. This shows again the importance of the distaff side of a pedigree to breeders.

Dear Max.I hadn’t heard about a Thousand Stars, these horses are having long seasons?
Hope they will be rested now.I have heard an US horse Undrafted is coming over for our July Cup,he is trained by Wesley Ward and owned by a Denver Broncos player, think he’s a gelding.I remember No Nay Never won for Mr Ward in RA last year.I think we British take defeats more on the chin , we are not terribly emotional although, I must say,I do have my moments!! AP McCoy is having a fantastic start to his season well on his way to a 20th championship next spring barring accidents!Free the Moose PU Dan and all injured horses.Sheena.

Sheena. Read this in the a Racing Post. It sounds like Stars and Daikali raced against each other. Is shorty involved? Agree that they need a break. The Fly has long since gone on hols.
Corrine is quoted in The Guardian as saying CDA has had a roll and is off his meds. Seems happy to be back where he can practise the subjunctive tense. Looks like he will recover. These chestnuts are tough warriors.
Stoicism is a good Brit approach. Getting upset usually leads to problems. If Coburn is worried about fresh horses, he’d get really upset by Moosie. Moosie brags that he is lightly raced. No horse is more rested than Moosie, and you never know when he will turn it all on. Moosie was thanking the guys at BettingNation for their support. He’s planning on an October return if the beak folds. Does he mean Champion’s Day or back to the jumps?

Deb E.
I’m actually sorry that Steve Coburn apologized for his rant. He had every right to be angry on Saturday, and I totally agree with him that only horses that have competed in both the Derby and the Preakness should be allowed to run in the Belmont. It’s only fair. NBC Nightly News just ran a story on the C.C. controversy with the reporter pointing out that Secretariat ran against horses that hadn’t competed in all three legs of the Triple Crown and won on “tired legs”. I’d like to point out that Red was an anomaly as his world record time in the Belmont proves. He could run on any surface, against “fresher” horses, and it just didn’t matter. He had a bigger engine than any of them. He was a physically perfect equine specimen. Things have changed since the 1970s, however, and the rules for the TC need to reflect those changes. All the horses should stand an even chance, and all the competitors should have to compete in the first two legs of the TC. It’s the fair thing to do. As for Bob Costas putting in his two cents that Mr. Coburn was a “sore loser” and “an embarrassment”, I’d just like to say that Mr. Costas’ comment during a sports radio show broadcast on NBCSN on Friday that Secretariat didn’t deserve to be listed among the top 100 athletes of the 20th Century ahead of Mickey Mantle because he was “just a horse” just goes to show that he wouldn’t recognize true greatness from a hole in the ground.

Sheena. One must have a sense of humor in order to handle Moosie. Some may not know that the Mooster is owned by a racing partnership of some the highest ranking peeps in Brit racing. Don’t come much higher or professional than the Hannons or Nigel. Was thinking however that the Moose might listen more intently to a woman trainer because as we know he loves the ladies. Maybe they should send him to Warren Place? Lady Jane got through to Noble. Moose might be next.
You’re probably right about Champion’s Day. If Matterhorn goes to the Arc, why not Moosie?
Free the Moose! Power up Danny! Power up CDA, Chromie and all who are sick.
Danielle
So does anyone know if Coz will go for the triple crown run of 2015?
Terry Crow
It is impossible to know at this point if Coz will be a good enough runner to compete in the triple crown races. One thing is for sure–The Mosses will nominate him for them.

Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I sent a text to Jackie about two weeks ago asking if she would send me photos of Diamond as she grows. She said she would keep in touch, but I have not heard anything from her. I miss the little love and her mom. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max. That is a good idea about Lady Jane and Moosie,a woman’s touch .No doubt he’d have to run on the flat with her.We all need a sense of humour where the Moose is concerned.Free the Moose PU Dan and all sick horses.Sheena.

Coz, it’s so exciting to know you are in John’s capable hands. He loved your mother and had a special bond with her. I know you will always do your best and that will be enough for me. Stay happy, healthy and enjoy these special days as you train to become a magnificient throughbred racehorse.

Dear Max and Z Fans:
