Ask The Experts: Mayberry Farm Part 1

Q:

Does Coz have Zenyatta’s personality?

Jan Graff

Hull, GA

A: Yes, he’s similar to his mother. He’s so confident, and he’s confident like she is. Being a baby, that’s kind of rare. He’s very confident in himself and that’s encouraging.

Q:

At what point in a young horse’s training is he or she galloped fast enough to determine whether that horse looks promising?

Donna Richardson

California, MD

A: We don’t really ask for speed here. It’s more about their way of going. You get an idea, maybe three months from the start—this one has ability, this one not so much—but we don’t flat out go here. That’s for the trainer. We teach them how to run.

A farm environment is so different from the race track. There will be horses for whom the lightbulb just doesn’t go on yet. It has to do with their age too. They can take longer to mature—as they get to the racetrack that bulb is getting brighter. If it’s a mature horse and you get the idea that they know what they’re doing, you may be able to tell if they have promise, but there are a bunch of question marks in between.

Think of them as kids; we’re the elementary school.

Q:

What does Mayberry Farm’s do differently than other farms that break yearlings?

Elizabeth Ames

Palo Alto, CA

A: I think we have more of a hands on approach than other people in our position. My mom, my sister, my cousin, myself, we’re all hands on (note: April answered this question). There’s no training from the car or calling assistants or taking weekends off. It’s all day and all night. When there’s a sick horse, we get up at midnight and come out. We get to know our horses, we spend so much time with them.

We’ve also been on the racetrack, and we know where the horses are going. We came from there. Most people start at the farm and go to the race track; we did the opposite. We know what trainers want and what they’re looking for, so it gives us a little bit of an advantage in that regard.

@Deb E. I was hoping someone would step up and express your thoughts.Agree with absolutely everything you said.So sad he was forced to apologize for his integrity and beliefs. Actually, many agree with him. Hope he finds comfort in that. He is learning the sometimes painful process of knowing when to pick your battles. I’m sure his financial investment as a hard working trusting person contributed to his frustration. Cannot imagine how difficult it was to apologize on national tv. The media did play a part in all of this in my opinion.

I felt so sorry for him. You shouldn’t have to apologize like that when you’re right. He’s a nice man who had every right to be angry on Saturday. Unfortunately, if you want to “play the game” in horse racing, you can’t burn your bridges and alienate the other owners, breeders, and officials. Gotta play nice. But I thought it was refreshing to actually hear someone vent their frustration on live TV.

To a certain extent I agree with him. But if that was the rule, there would be no Rags to Riches winning the Belmont or Rachel in the Preakness. I guess since Rachel won the Oaks, she could have qualified.

He’s not right. There’s never been a rule, either written or understood, that Belmont horses must have run in the other two Triple Crown races. All the winners of the Triple Crown had to run against fresher horses.

The Triple Crown is a traditional association, and the tracks that put on the races are happy to continue the tradtion insofar as it’s good for business. However, the races themselves were never conceived as part of a series. The weren’t inaugurated at the same time, and the order of the races sometimes varied prior to 1930. The races are put on by separate, independent entities. The three tracks operate in different jurisdictions and have different owners. They determine their own criteria for who gets to enter each race. The goal is to provide full, competitive fields that will interest bettors and draw handle.. It it not a goal to enhance the chances of any particular horse.

You know over the years when I was a Blood Horse subscriber (now electronic lol) I kept the stallion pages and articles (there are BOXES full of lots of them) and I came across one when Smarty Jones was initially retired it read:

Smarty Jones : America’s Horse. He won the Derby, the Preakness. And all of our Hearts.

The same could be applied to California Chrome. He won the Derby. And The Preakness. And all of our Hearts (He definitely won mine!)

Ideas are like eggs in an incubator. They must be kept warm and protected until they have grown enough to hatch. Our need to go wo ni ha, talk on and on, can do away with a promising situation before it has ever had time to take form. Left to develop, it may have been a great blessing to many-but tampering with it in our belief that we can do anything and say anything aborts it. There is a time to speak and a time to keep silent, but it takes wisdom to know the time. Most things can only stand one telling, and it had better be where it stands a chance to survive. Until that time, don’t talk, don’t count.

Just returned home from a visit to Kentucky for my grandson’s graduation. During the week we were there I took a tour of Claiborne Farm. The groom leading the tour and I got into a conversation about Zenyatta (when he brought out Blame) and her new baby
filly. We started talking about the fact that she would not be bred this year when he mentioned that she had a 2015 date with War Front again at Claiborne. Just thought I would pass the info along –no way of knowing if this is truly the case.

Will look up Mr No-Ears and Sheldon Chubs. I have no tolerance for animal abusers. So sick…it’s just a small leap to hurting humans. Stay safe, Joey! Glad all is calm on the Dyfi. I’ve kept close watch on Babinka. Such a beautiful little girl. I’m relieved her suffering is over. Heart breaks for her mom, and I know her little brother and sister can’t figure out where she has gone. Lots of heartbreak in that household right now. God bless them. Have a wonderful day. I was hoping that CC would stay back East and take on those horses. Would love to see him at Saratoga then return to California to prepare for the Breeders Cup. CC needs to race as an older horse. I think he will improve with age. Also, there is so little respect for his pedigree that his stud book could be limited. CC in Dubai perhaps next year.

My brother suffers from pulmonary heart disease. Last week he had a minor stroke (the doctor’s words) and is scheduled for extensive tests this week. All prayers greatly appreciated. Love Vicki!

An interesting analysis by Forbes of stud fees, and the significant difference between the potential earning power of the English Derby winner, Australia, with his impeccable pedigree, vs. California Chrome.

JudyB. Absolutely true. None of this has ever been an exact science. The trouble for our Chromie is that few breeders might be willing to take the risk on an unproven and weak pedigree, especially since the recession. He’s got to keep racing and winning to overcome their analysis.

        • Sally B. (Auntie cherishes Z and her young)

          June 10, 2014 at 7:25 pm

Max, you consider Lucky Pulpit a weak pedigree? I looked beyond just Lucky Pulpit into the depth of the pedigree but yes, I am still learning.

SallyB. It’s the experts who criticize the pedigree of Chromie, not me. I have nothing but admiration for that horse.

        • Terry Crow

          June 11, 2014 at 7:00 am

Max-You are absolutely correct in your analysis. The DRF used to have a writer who wrote about dosage. Before the Kentucky Derby was run, he would analyze the field and pick the horses who were likely to get the distance. To some extent he was right. His picks “got” the distance in the context that they finished the race. But they rarely finished in the money, much less won it. The breeding of horses is an inexact science. If it wasn’t, we would all be hearing about The Green Monkey today.

Ingrid. I love that horse. I do not know how anyone could not love him because he has charisma, and he has heart. We will never know if he could have won that race without the injury. We will just have to move on and hope that Chromie can continue to have a good career. I’d say he’s got an amazing record already with two classics. Wise Dan has never won a classic, but he’s still a super horse.

          Dear Max, Sally and Ingrid:

I think you have to look deep, but I think that CC’s pedigree is not all that weak. Take a look at the bloodlines on both sides. AP Indy, Cozzene, Mr. Prospector, Polish Numbers, Northern Dancer, Danzig, Sir Ivor, Raise A Native, Seattle Slew; not too shabby. The genes are there. Love him; love his confidence, his courage and his heart. Hope he stays healthy and sound and has continued success in future races and in his stud career when he retires. I think he’s an exceptional horse in so many ways. Love and Hugs, JB

I am not familiar with The Big Beast. I did check his Equibase chart and I’m linking it here. His Sire, Yes It’s True, is a multiple stakes winner earning over $1M dollars. His Dam is a daughter of Deputy Minister (who is my Charlies Grand Sire) who won the Sovereign and Eclipse Awards for Two Year Old Champion in 1981 and the Sovereign Horse of The Year Award in 1981. After his 1983 campaign, he was retired to stud. DM’s Grand Sire was Northern Dancer. The Big Beast has some wonderful bloodlines.

The Big Beast has started three times and has a win, a second and a third place finish.

JudyB. Thanks so much. The second horse, Guggenheim, is owned by Jerry and Ann Moss. I’m however very impressed by The Big Beast. Hope that he goes to Saratoga. Bravo Beast.

          Dear Max:

You’re so welcome. Did not know Guggenheim was owned by Mr. and Mrs. M and trained by JS. Yes, impressive win by The Beast. Will have to keep track of both of these boys. Love and Hugs, JB

JudyB. Guggi is a chestnut! He also looks like a nice horse. I’m thrilled to be able to follow a horse like The Big Beast. Loved the comment of the announcer that The Beast is a “big boy.” He’s a fast mover for a big beast. We can have a lot of fun with him. Power up Big Beast.
Free the Moose! Power up Danny. Power up CDA, Chromie and all of the others who are sick.

Dr. Raul Bras: Chrome’s injury “painful,” common (Rood & Riddle)
By Susan Salk Off-track Throroughbreds on June 9, 2014
The injury sustained by Triple Crown hopeful California Chrome in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes bid is a very common racetrack injury, and one that typically does not aversely affect a racehorse’s future career, says Dr. Raul Bras, DVM, CJF of Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital.
The laceration, which can occur when a horse grabs his own heels while exiting the starting gate, is very painful to a horse, says Dr. Bras, who notes that it’s impossible to say at this point whether such an injury would have affected the 4-1 favorite in his quest to win the Triple Crown.

1-time rider TomChapman”It’s amazing CC finished as close as he did.
This would take 10 lengths from any horse.”

This description is why I do not consider CC’s injury as grabbing a quarter. That is a self inflicted injury. His was not. I respectfully disagree with Doctor Bras. I would like to see him try running a mile and a half after having one of his feet stepped on by a horse. Tom Chapman’s comment seems more on the money.

Chrome had had a long day on Sunday.
He flew from MacArthur Airport on Long Island, NY to Louisville
Then Louisville to Ontario, CA. Then van ride to Los Al
Wonder if he gets frequent flyer miles?

The airlines now consider the money spent rather than the number of flights when rewards are considered. Just another way of cheating us poor folks.

    Beholder Injured in Ogden Phipps
San Diego Horse Race posted by redbird June 9, 2014
California Chrome was not the only one gashed in a race at Belmont Park last Saturday. Two-time Eclipse Award winning filly, Beholder, will miss up to six weeks of training after she came back from her run in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps with a gash to her left hind pastern.
Trainer, Richard Mandella, said it was “pretty deep” and that the whole pastern was “rubbed raw.” He added that there was large flap of skin that is too jagged for stitches and will probably be removed once everything’s healed. They washed out the wound and put a bandage on it and so far it “looks fine.” Mandella says fortunately nothing more serious was damaged, like ligaments or tendons. His biggest fear… at this point is infection but she’s been treated with penicillin and antibiotics.
Mandella said he doesn’t know when the injury occurred but that it appears to have been created by a toe-grab on a horseshoe. He has watched replays of the race and, while he can’t pinpoint when his prized filly was hurt, he told the Paulick Report that it appears to have occurred when another horse’s back foot came down on Beholder’s leg, cutting a deep slash from top to bottom. He also acknowledged it could have occurred in the starting gate.
Rider, Gary Stevens, is also perplexed as to how and when the injury occurred. He said he just thought Beholder was having trouble handling the Belmont track. They finished fourth in the talent-ladened, Ogden Phipps, behind the winner, Close Hatches, and runner-ups, Princess of Sylmar and Antipathy.

Was really cheering for her and couldn’t figure out what happened. I didn’t hear this until yesterday. Again – it’s a miracle she did as well as she did. SO hoping that it doesn’t get infected and that she gets better soon.

Ride On Curlin to Get Some Time Off
    By Blood-Horse Staff June 8, 2014 3:01 PM
Preakness Stakes (gr. I) runner-up Ride On Curlin, who failed to finish in the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I), will be getting a break after competing in all three legs of the Triple Crown.
Daniel J. Dougherty’s son of Curlin bled in the Belmont and was eased at the quarter pole by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez.
“He bled probably a three out of 10,” trainer Billy Gowan said. “He ate everything last night and his legs look good, so that’s the main thing. He was going to get a little break anyhow, so maybe it’s time to give him one.”
Gowan and Ride On Curlin will head back to their base in Kentucky on Monday.

California Chrome trainer describes Belmont injury
Jennie Rees, USA TODAY Sports 10:33 a.m. EDT June 9, 2014
    Excerpts from article:
California Chrome also sustained a cut on his foreleg. That’s where Sherman said they really dodged a bullet.
“He had a cut by his tendon where they hit him. That’s what scared me the most. It wasn’t deep; it was superficial. Gosh, that’s the worst thing that can happen to a horse, hit his tendon. But we got lucky there. It just went down to the bottom of his foot, by his pastern.”

Stonestreet posted to pic of Taco yesterday. He is a beauty but does not seem to be as tall or long as our sweet Coz. Of course, it is hard to tell from a picture. Both of them seem to look more like their moms than their sires. If both guys make it to the track next year, it could really be fun.

Kudos to big D’s boy, Medal Count for his 3rd in the Belmont.
