Uniquely marked Starresha debuts Saturday
By Bailey Gallison for WoodbineEntertainment.com
TORONTO, July 5 – “Usually the first question is, ‘when did you get a pony?’” trainer Kelly Callaghan said with a laugh.
No, that light framed, loudly coloured horse turning heads on the backstretch at Woodbine is not a pony, but a 2-year-old Thoroughbred racehorse named Starresha. When she makes her debut in Saturday’s second race, she’ll have a B. under her name in the program denoting she is registered as a bay with the Jockey Club. But to find her in the paddock you’ll simply need to look for the one horse that appears to have ran through a river of white paint. http://www.woodbineentertainment.com/Woodbine/RaceTrackNewsPage.aspx?NewsId=721ae9ef-1873-408d-b5ab-f66476687292
Thanks for this article. I am glad that you and Max brought this lovely girl to our attention. There are very nice photos here, too. Starresha’s mama, Painting Shadows is quite a stunning mare!
Hope Starresha has good fortune and stays healthy, sound and happy with her job.
Great find. Love the photo of Star and her momma. Nice video too. When she ran at Woodbine, race caller said that Star was “cute as a button” as she was loaded into the gate. For sure.
Happy Retirement to Minding!
Enjoy your new career, beautiful girl, and have many good years of health and love.
Thank you for the thrill of watching you race!

Long, Hard Struggle For Female Jockeys
Hangin’ With Haskins The Blood-Horse 11 July, 2017
When Diane Nelson passed away on July 5 at age 54, her days riding regularly on the tough New York circuit were long forgotten by many. But those who followed racing in the Big Apple on a daily basis remember her as a top rider, who like so many females before her, was never given the opportunity to ride world class horses and compete in championship races on a regular basis.
Nelson is remembered as being stunningly attractive and very affable who had signed a contract with the Ford Modeling Agency. But on the racetrack she was talented enough to win almost 1,100 races, while bankrolling over $19 million in earnings and winning eight graded stakes, including the the grade 1 Prioress Stakes and grade 2 Comely Stakes aboard Acey Deucy in 2005. http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/horse-racing-steve-haskin/archive/2017/07/11/long-hard-struggle-for-female-jockeys.aspx
Thanks so much for posting another truly great Steve Haskin article!
He is hands down the best — a beautiful soul with the talent for writing. His love and respect for horses, and those who work with and care for them, always shine brilliantly in his articles. I enjoyed this piece very much indeed. An excellent tribute to Ms. Nelson and all those strong determined female pioneers in horse racing.
BGG, thanks for posting another great article by SH. I remember Diane Nelson and some of the other girl jockeys named in the article well. Here is another article on Diane Nelson with a photo. She was beautiful.
BBQ and Judy Berube. I remember some of the early female riders mentioned in the article you posted. Most notably Mary Bacon when she rode at Turf Paradise when we HD horses there. She was indeed stunningly beautiful. After one race she was very unhappy with the result (I can’t remember exactly why, maybe a disqualification??) And after she dismounted, weighed in and was on her way back to the jock’s room and in full view of the grandstand, she threw open her silks, and while jocks typically wear a sleeveless tank under their silks, she did not Oops.
