Happy Sunday To All! A big thanks to Alys and Team Z for these wonderful photos of our beautiful Zenyatta! She is indeed a “Snow Queen”. Always makes me smile and feel so good when I see her. :)
And thank you, Kathy, for the nice Cherokee Devotional for today. Very inspirational. :)
Sending all good thoughts and prayers to everyone out there in the Land of Zen! Be safe and stay warm!
Here is the Beast in normal mode. Trainer says that the Beast escapes from his handlers on a daily basis. Needs his pony with him at all times, including the winner’s circle. Pony likes the chance for photos. Probably gets treats too.
Don’t know his pedigree but there has got to be some Big D in there somewhere pehaps mixed with a little Halo!
Beautiful animal with lots of spirit. They haven’t gelded him have they?
Godspeed to him as he races.
Max
No Big D. Not gelded. The Beastie is inbred to Northern Dancer on his distaff. Has the Minstrel, a champion in Europe, in his pedigree. The Beast is actually a good natured sort, but he is huge and he just likes escaping. Looks like he has company in that stable with Big Trouble and Overthespeedlimit. They seem to do the same things.
Look at this photo of The Big Beast winning the Kings Bishop at the Spa. You can just about see the jockey on the horse racing at the rail, but you can’t see the horse at all; Beastie is huge. Love and Hugs, JB
I always enjoy looking at Zenyatta but have to say I have seen her looking
much happier than of late. May be it’s the winter. I think she deserves
to be retired from breeding.
Love you Zenyatta you have brought such joy to
many peoples lives and always will.
Why on earth should she be retired from breeding? She’s young, healthy, and has had a grand total of three foals–experiencing no trouble at all with her pregnancies or births. By all reports, she thoroughly enjoys being a mom. She just got a year off.
As for her not looking happy of late, you’re basing your judgment on photographs that are subject to camera angles, lighting conditions, and other factors. You haven’t seen her in the flesh, so you don’t have a real basis to evaluate her mental state. She has no reason to be unhappy. She’s got her girlfriends, a nice big paddock, and snow and mud to roll in. She’s well taken care of. She is probably blissfully happy.
“Just being around horses settles everything. Sometimes I don’t even have to ride; I just go out and brush them. Whenever I feel like I need to get centered, that usually does the trick.” (From People Magazine February 2015)
Looking at photos of Zenyatta in the snow or anywhere has the same effect.
Her most recent close up photo above seems to suggest that she is actually looking younger and better than ever. She is magnificent. No words can capture her essence, although goodness and joy may do it somewhat.
Dear Max, I agree 100%. Having the year off has done wonders for her, physically. Not long ago in an interview, John was asked if Coz is like his mother in the barn. He smiled and said that he is a colt and he is young and Zenyatta always had a kindness about her. She still does.
Thanks for sharing that, JB. Equine aromatherapy works wonders. The Tack Shop is a close second. Now to see Michael’s movie!
Agree, Max. Z and her buddies receive great care!
Kick butt, Coz. Study hard, Zi.
Dear Marshall.Thank you for your kind message about SDG yesterday. It was wonderful to see him back to his best and jumping fluently. How is Bailey settling down and more especially how is Huey coping with his sisfur. You all keep well!Love hugs and woofs.Sheena.
Dear Sheena,
Bailey and Huey are getting on just fine. She would like him to play and chase her, but alas, Huey is not into lively activities since his joints are too stiff and arthritic. She is very good, though, and he seems to have adjusted to his sisfur very well.
I have checked the shelter site to see if “Hobo” is still there, and he is; however, he has been there since the first of January, and it is quite likely that time is running short. I haven’t been successful at finding a rescue group to take him. I haven’t given up yet — could I handle three dogs, and could Huey handle another young dog? I am not sure.
Have a good week! Huey and Bailey send woofs, wags and wiggles.
Hugs and Love
So glad that Bailey and Huey are friends. Just having his “sisfur” around will be good for Huey even if he’s unable to be as active as she is. Please keep us updated on Bailey, Huey and Hobo. God Bless you for the great home and all the love you give them. Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Judy B.,
I checked the shelter website again this morning. There was no Hobo. I didn’t call to find out if he had been adopted — too afraid that he wasn’t. I certainly hope that is the case, but . . . Timing is everything, and I have waited too long. I am so sorry. Be safe and happy, sweet boy.

Judy,

Stay safe and warm tonight and know we join you in moments of grief for Dubai and our sweet Z Princess.

Dear Shirlee:
Funny, isn’t it, how stewards rulings on similar infractions differ from track to track. Hope Upstart came out of the race well and he’ll be back strong. We know only too well that the best horse in the race doesn’t always win. Love and Hugs, JB
Today in race 5 at Santa Anita, Smart Transition, trained by John Shirreffs, ridden by V. Espinoza came in second in his debut race. Smart Transition is the son of Smart Strike, out of Zardana, John’s former trainee. Smart Transition is also on the list of early nominations for the TC races. Smart Transition looked like a calm veteran in the post parade.
Late on a snowy winter’s evening the woods are quiet as though a woolen blanket has been laid over everything to muffle the sound. The sunset lights the western sky with wispy clouds like horsetails.
Pink and orange and purple streak the sky and slide down to glowing embers along the horizon. A thin spiral of blue smoke rises from a chimney and the sun’s reflection bronzes all the windows.
It is suppertime. It is the end of the day and time to be peaceful. Grievances and unhappiness can go by the wayside and let companionship come in. It is suppertime-a time reserved for sharing the best. A pot of soup, a loaf of bread, and peace.
The many moons and sunny days we have lived here will long be remembered by us.

Sheena: Very, very sad. This happened in my adopted hometown (where my Mum & Dad grew up) here in Quebec. I was just a kid myself, but I never forgot it. Sincere condolences.

Very very sad, only eleven years old if I read things right. Children should be able to grow up, enjoy being a child. So sad. Sally B
