Happy Wednesday!
This week has brought warm and sunny weather to Lane’s End, which means many happy horses!
12Z received a visit from the blacksmith yesterday, during which his feet were assessed and trimmed. He was quite the well behaved colt! Alys was there to document the occasion, so you can watch the whole process on video below.
Enjoy!

Dear Sheena:
Thank you. Max is right, I will be waiting to hear when Kind foals too. Love Frankel and all of his family.
So happy for Bullet Train. Always loved him too. He’s just beautiful. Hugs, JB
Max
Sheena. You are very right about Bullet Train. His fee is just fantastic. As a US breeder you would get 3/4 of the genes of Frankel, only missing out on Galileo. And you can avoid the logistical nightmare and expense of sending your mare to England.
Let us know about Denman. I laughed at that description which Keta posted of Master Minded. I still think of how he was hassled daily by Kauto. Glad however that MM is doing well.

Dear Max, Sheena, Ann, and Z Fans:
Just got some good news on Gigi, the horse with the abscess on her foot. Angela was concerned because the abscess had finally dried and healed and Gigi was still lame. She called the farrier in yesterday to look at the foot. When he removed Gigi’s shoe, he found there was a nail protruding that caused Gigi’s abscess, pain and lameness. He replaced the shoe and Angela said Gigi is a different horse’ she’s prancing and dancing around with no trace of pain or lameness. For the time being, Angela will keep Gigi in the round pen until she’s totally healed and then let her join the other horses in the paddock.
I still have not heard from the woman that has Hudson Township on whether or not we can purchase her. Will keep you all updated. Hugs, JB

Thank you, Judy. That is great news about Gigi, but I am so sorry she had to endure that. She must feel so much better now. Farriers can do a lot. Sometimes they can help eliminate a vet call. Please keep us posted on HT.

Dear Barb W.:
Thank you. She was so uncomfortable.
It’s amazing to me that Florence never had her shoe checked. She last raced on 10/13/12 and I’m not sure, but I think she went lame shortly after. Florence told Angela and I on the day we acquired her that she had x-rays done on Gigi’s foot recently and they showed nothing. The whole thing makes no sense. I’m just so relieved that she no longer has pain. Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Terrific news about G. A painful foot is hard to take. Let us know when she’s turned out in the paddock and there is any news on HT. Love to hear about PC too.

JudyB. Have you found a peppermint yet which Gigi likes?
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I haven’t tried any different peppermints yet, but there is a treat called “Stud Muffins”. They’re made with molasses, oats, wheat, wheat bran, barley, corn and flax seed. Charlie loves them and I’m going to try giving them to Gigi when I visit this week. Hugs, JB

ARCADIA, Calif. – Game On Dude equaled a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 116 with his win in Sunday’s $200,000 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita, a performance that will make him a strong favorite for the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap on March 2.

Baby zebra born at Phoenix Zoo; awaits name
by Tami Hoey azfamily.com Posted on February 4, 2013 at 2:47 PM
PHOENIX –The Phoenix Zoo is proud to announce its newest resident: a baby zebra!
The male Grevy’s zebra was born on Jan. 19 to mom Masika and dad Punta. The 100 pound baby is now on display to the public along the zoo’s Africa Trail.
Zoo officials tell us the new addition enjoys exploring his exhibit and has been playing with another male foal, Utambo, born just a couple of months earlier in November to his mother Afiya. Both foals share the same father.
The baby has plenty of spirit, and his cute factor is through the roof! But what he doesn’t have yet is a name.

Dominguez Enters Rehabilitation Program
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Monday, February 4, 2013 5:29 PM
Jockey Ramon Dominguez has been transferred from New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center to Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, N.Y., and has begun inpatient therapy for a skull fracture sustained in a Jan. 18 spill at Aqueduct Racetrack.
“Ramon continues to do well and is improving every day,” said the jockey’s wife, Sharon Dominguez, in a release. “He was transferred to Burke on Wednesday (Jan. 30), completed initial evaluations on Thursday (Jan. 31), and started a brain injury rehabilitation program on Friday (Feb. 1). As Ramon takes the next steps in his treatment, he and I would like to thank everyone again for the continued support and prayers. Although his injury will take time to heal, Ramon is on the road to a full recovery.”

Stewards Disqualify Sign from Pocahontas Win
By Frank Angst, The Blood-Horse Updated: Monday, February 4, 2013 3:20 PM
Kentucky Horse Racing Commission stewards have disqualified Sign from her victory in last season’s Pocahontas Stakes (gr. II) at Churchill Downs following a positive test for methocarbamol (Robaxin).
Following the positive test reported by HFL Sport Science Laboratory and confirmed (second sample) by Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Kentucky stewards fined Sign’s trainer Al Stall Jr. $250 and had owners Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider forfeit the $101,125 in purse money earned by the daughter of Pulpit .
Lexington attorney David Royse said Stall and the owners plan to seek review of the case from the full Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. Stall maintains Sign was never administered methocarbamol.

Dear Keta and Z Fans:
Oh no! If this is true, it is just so disheartening. Makes me think this poor horses was injured because she was given something to mask pain and make her run more aggressively than normal for her. SO SAD.

Dear Judy B,
That is a muscle relaxer hardly something that would be given to a horse
before a race. May be an erroneous drug test and they do happen.
Humans who ingest poppy seeds will test postive for opiates in their
urine.
Need to be retested and reviewed.

Max,
A medical or veterninarian’s opinion is warranted in this case.
and from the information post below on 1/2 life and side effects,
it is not possible for this horse to have been given this medication.
In addition, Robaxin is not an ant inflammatory or used to treat
bone bruises. Suspecting this medication with this medical
condition is not a possibility.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Keta, Sign and Z Fans:
Here’s an article from Paulick Report 1/16/13 on Sign’s injury and subsequent date of surgery. Makes you wonder. Hugs, JB

Judy B, Max, Claiborne Farm has issued a statement. Here it is. Hugs, Keta
Claiborne Farm tweets Official Statement on Ruling
The Claiborne Farm official statement on the ruling handed down
to SIGN can be found here
http://www.claibornefarm.com/sign_statement.pdf
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Judy B,
Below is the reason that Robaxin would not have been used in Sign.
Half life is 60 to 70 minutes, it would have been given before the race
at the time she was in the paddock or holding area. Side effect
are Sedation and below “it may impair the abilities of working animals”.
Had it been given to her she would have been sluggish and definitely
not have won. They well be an investigation.
ROBAXIN IN HORSES
In horses, plasma clearances appear to be dose dependent after IV administration (Muir, Sams, and Ashcraft 1984), lower clearances were measured after higher doses were given. The serum half-life of methocarbamol in the horse is approximately 60-70 minutes. Guaifenesin is a minor metabolite of methocarbamol, but because of very low concentrations, it probably has no clinical effect in the horse.
Adverse Effects/Warnings – Side effects can include sedation, salivation, emesis, lethargy, weakness and ataxia in dogs and cats. Sedation and ataxia are possible in horses. Because of its CNS depressant effects, methocarbamol may impair the abilities of working animals.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Claibourn’s statement is absolutely correct.
Had Sign been given this medication she would have never
been able to run.
It is metablolite of something that she was given.
It does metabolize into Guafenassin, which is in cough
syrup so may be something like that that cause the
product to be detected as Robaxin and be something else.
We see this all the time in human drug screens, there is a
narcotic metablolite derived from things like poppy seeds.
In fact when Exxon, after the Valdez incident, began employee
drug testing they were the first to find out some of there employees
at poppy seeds for breakfast and tested positive for opiates.
CLAIBOURNE WILL WITH THIS ONE, FOR SURE.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Max,
There are always exceptions in the world of medicine/veterinary
medicine. We in the medical/veterinary community live a grey/gray
world. If we lived in black and white world all of our patients would
be long gone.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Keta, Max, Sign and Z Fans:
Let’s hope it gets resolved fairly and reversed if it is proved a mistake was made. Most of all let’s hope for a complete recovery for Sign. Hugs, JB
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Judy B,
Will send you link to the list of medications that can cause false
positive drug screens.
And so totally agree, a full recover for Sign. She has surgery quite a
few weeks ago.

Gus is very depressed after the loss of his best friend Bing. The vet also believes that Bing had a stroke. The people at SHERR have been trying to help Gus cope. I was at school the whole day, and Gin just now posted how Bing died. Poor guy made it for a few hours, but eventually, he passed on sometime in the morning. A bit later than what a volunteer that was on site originally posted. Still, he’s young and healthy again, running around and having a grand ole’ time with Tessa.

I think Bing wanted to be a gentleman, and didn’t want Tessa to go alone. So he decided he would accompany her across the Bridge so that they could have their fun together. Dear Keta, Ann, Judy and Sheena: I’m still Downunder – recovering from one of the worst migraines I’ve had – due to too much worrying and stress, I’m told. Have not posted in a little while (beyond messages for, unfortunately, too many crossings of the Rainbow Bridge) because I was worried about some comments earlier on regarding posts not related to the magical Zenyatta. Am concerned that I might have been a little arrogant in assuming people were interested in Australian racing news, when the site is really for Zenyatta. As an “alien” I do feel like a guest on this site, and would be horrified if I had offended Mr and Mrs Moss, Team Z or the Lane’s End team. And of course, all you lovely people. Just had to get that off my chest. Oh, Mum is doing really well, now the temperatures are cooling down. Hugs and love to you all. KathyR.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Kathy R. – I can’t imagine there being a problem posting racing news from Australia, or anywhere else! Some people only want to read about Zenyatta, but many are interested in all horse news, education, movies, training tips, personal stories, etc. I doubt that anyone can read everything, so we all have to pick and choose. I definitely enjoy what you post, even though I seldom comment. Thanks.

Kathy R
FIrst, I do hope this nasty migraine passes & you are feeling good again.
Second, there are some on the Blog who are very vocal about it being all about Zenyatta & 12Z. These tend to be newbie’s who haven’t really visited the Blog.
Or, some may seriously think it is only Z’s area. Right now, Z and 12Z daily routines are pretty repetitive.
I waited to post anything outside the Zenyatta or 12Z area for over 300 posts.
The photos & videos were wonderful. People had to share their excitement & love.
But, we are all horse, racing, animal lovers.
We share that interest–not matter where we are-USA, Canada, Europe, UK or Downunder. So, know how welcome you are. No we miss and are concerned when you are not here.
Hugs, Keta
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Kathy R, from one guest on this site to another, your posts are VERY welcome. Like Keta said, that was a probably a “newbie” who thought everything here on the Blog should ONLY be about Zenyatta and her progeny. No worries, mate!

Dear Kathy R,
Please do not feel that way. All of your information is very much welcome on this
site and very uplifting and positive with all of the death, dying, injuries that seem to the most popular topics on this site. Zenyatta is about strength, womanhood,
imagination, can do and positivity. Everything you contribute is all of that and more.
Migraines are a very uncomfortable thing and I hope that you are feeling better.
And glad your mum is doing well.

Rosemary McCauley-Pres./AZ/New Mexico RNC
Kathy R. Don’t feel that you have insulted anyone by posting Australian racing news on this site. Speaking for myself, someone who has never been to Australia, I enjoy hearing about racing there. If you remember, when Dottie was posting as the voice of Zenyatta in the beginning, she posted news about horse racing and the people involved, as well as about Zenyatta and her transition to her new career as a broodmare. No one loves and respects Zenyatta any more than I do, but the site would not be as diverse as it is if every post was “I love Zenyatta and Z12 very much” or something similar. As much as I love to hear and read those words from Zenyatta’s fans and as much as I repeat them myself to anyone who will listen, I believe Zenyatta is all about life experiences and would want her fans to share with each other. Please continue to provide updates.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Rosemary,
So very well said. Dottie really addressed many topics and happenings in

Dear Zenny Fans, Dumpling and All,
Lord God, You have made all living things
and You are even more wonderful than the
things You have made. We thank You for
giving us our pets who are our friends
and who give us so much joy in life.
Bless our pets. May we realize that as
our pets trust us to take care of them,
so we should trust You to take care of
them, we share in Your love for all Your
creatures. Grant this through Christ Our
Lord.
Amen

STEVENS ABOARD SLIM SHADEY FOR G2 SAN MARCOS
by Press Release | 02.02.2013 | 3:48pm
Slim Shadey, prepping for next Saturday’s Grade II San Marcos Stakes at 1 ¼ miles on turf, worked five furlongs on Santa Anita’s main track today in 1:01 under Gary Stevens, who rides the English-bred son of Val Royal in the San Marcos.“He went well,” said Simon Callaghan, who also sent Robert J. Frankel winner Qaraaba four furlongs in 48.80. “The San Gabriel just didn’t set up well for him,” the trainer added, explaining the gelding’s sixth-place finish as the 3-2 favorite. Garrett Gomez, who rode Slim Shadey in the San Gabriel, rides All Squared Away for Peter Miller in the San Marcos. Richard’s Kid also worked Saturday for the San Marcos, going six furlongs in company with Russdiculous for Doug O’Neill. Richard’s Kid, ridden by Kevin Krigger, was clocked in 1:12.40, while Russdiculous was given 1:14.60.
