Happy February!
Last fall we held our fourth annual Zenyatta Celebration, raising $20,000 for Thoroughbred Rehab Center Inc. Five participants were chosen in a random drawing to win the grand prize, An Invitation to Meet Zenyatta. Each winner was invited to travel with a guest to Lane’s End Farm to meet Zenyatta and receive a tour of the farm. These photos document their visits. Photography by Alys Emson.
View the complete set of photos from these visits in our 2016 Zenyatta Celebration Photo Gallery.
Some of you have noticed that we’ve been posting less frequently, but our winter break is no cause for concern. Zenyatta is happy and healthy, and we got to see her at Lane’s End in late January. We’ll be posting images from our visit soon.
Enjoy!

Hello Everyone: As I posted earlier, Oregon was scratched the other day as the race was off turf. He did however work out today and went five furlongs in 1:01.20. Keep an eye on that time as Ziconic also worked out and got the same number as well. Gormley ran 6 furlongs in 1.11.? sorry I was so excited I didn’t get the full time, but I’m sure you get the idea. Here’s hoping we get to see all three of these boys running in a race very soon. Also, start heating up the water and make sure you have a good pair of shoes as it should only be a few more weeks before we need to start pacing in earnest as we wait for the newest addition to the family Zenyatta. Don’t forget, Vixana could be having her little one soon also.
Elizabeth in NM
Dear Martha,
What a very encouraging post you gave us today! Have my pacing shoes on and am sure the carpet will be well worn. Thank you for reminding us about Vixana. I missed that post of her delivery time so close to Zenny’s. God’s blessings and hope you have a wonderful day!
with love, Elizabeth
PS I also hope we see Ziconic and Coz back ‘in the fray’ on the racetrack soon

Memories are simply patterns stamped on our minds. Don’t let them make you believe you have done everything wrong. Make new choices, find new thoughts that feed your spirit. Speak courage. Intentionally cut sorrow and regret from your thought. Get rid of tears and, if you have to, force yourself to begin smiling. It is not ridiculous to set new standards. It is common sense to turn your life around when it doesn’t work the way it is. Forget what others say and believe in the Good Father. It is their privilege to make decisions about their lives, but it is up to you to make your own. We are saying the same thing, we just say it in a different way. Find your own path and fill it with flowers. See something beautiful everywhere you look. Rejoice in life itself and find your own new and happier road.
There is one God looking down on us all. We are all children of one God. God is listening to me. The sun, the darkness, the winds, are all listening to what we now say.

Dear Kathy.Indeed there is only one God who watches over us all.I have never seen the need for different religions. It’s quite cold here today showery for us but snow in places.Happy Pancake day or Mardi Gras.I have never liked pancakes!
I am glad you saw my post about Hovis I hope and pray the joint isn’t affected. He certainly knows how to win hearts and minds though. Can you imagine the same injury as a TB given his views on racehorses?Well he did insist Shergar was his dad even though Shergar wasn’t around at the time!Prayers for the big guy and Karen.
Mullins insists Djakadam is going to run the race of his life in the Gold cup.2 weeks today!!!.Liz was in Victoria Beckham today a beautiful blue dress she never wears highstreet!Mr Fibbs and Milo wouldn’t share Teddy lol and they had taters yesterday.Mr Fibbs is going to the media reception unlike the Donald. He must have had a laugh at the Oscars fiasco. They said Warren has realised there was a mistake but was too vain to wear his spectacles.Someone said his face hadn’t moved in 5 years!
I loved the Zoeism yesterday and she looks so pretty.I happened to watch “Countryfile” on sunday and they were on the Isle of Man(where Clouds spent his summers)there is still a horse drawn tram there and a rest home for all the “trammers” at the end of their working lives.I posted some photos on my FB.Hopefully there will be good news about Hovis tomorrow.Have a great day.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Angel Holly,Nikko and Sugar SheenaXOXOXOXO

Dear Sheena,
Stay warm and comfy today. Pancakes…sounds pretty good! Happy Fat Tuesday. I’m doing a lot of praying for Hovis and for Karen, too. He just has to be okay…Very best a nd good wishes for Djakadam. Liz’s dress sounds lovely. Fibbs and Milo always make me smile. So cute with their Teddy, and they sure were enjoying their corms and taters. They sure have a cute little table and plate. Very civilized! Good for Fibbs attending the media reception. Yes, the Oscars gave new meaning to “fiasco!” Faye and Warren…poster children for face lifts! Yes, Zoe’s Zoeism was great, as always. And yes, she looked gorgeous in her Mardi Gras dress. A little fashion icon, that one! I will look for those photos. Sounds lovely there on the Isle of Man. Fingers crossed for Hovis! Have a good day. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXOXOXO

Sorry for the delay in updating you all but as you can imagine last night was a night of a lot of phone calls and to be honest some reflection time.
So what we DO know: the bone scan has shown an area of trauma to the front of his left hind fetlock area. So we know whatever he’s done it’s “boney” and not soft tissue.
And to be honest that’s about it at the moment.
So what happens next:
He can’t have anything done until Wednesday when he stops glowing in the dark!
He will then have another set of high resolution X-rays now we have located the area of damage to try and ascertain if it’s a fracture or if it’s bone trauma such a a cyst or damage to his cartilage.
If the X-ray is still not conclusive we will attempt an MRI on Friday. Despite an MRI not working on his foot the vet seems to think we might be able to get one of his fetlock.
Clearly the worry now is to see how close the damage is to the joint itself.
We’re in a catch 22 situation. Ironically for long term prognosis the best option is a small fracture which hasn’t compromised the joint. BUT the short term risk of a fracture is much much higher in terms of the early weeks of recovery.
Cartilage damage or a cyst is better in the short terms but will take much longer to heal with the long term prognosis not potentially being v good.
Anything that has compromised the joint itself is not good at all.
So can we now have prayers for very small fracture which hasn’t compromised the joint?!!
In himself he’s fine, winning hearts at the vets with those huge brown eyes and relaxed puppy dog nature. They’re going to ring me again today to let me know how he’s doing but he was very calm and quite interested in what was going on.
So we won’t know any more until tomorrow and the big guy isn’t coming home until at least the end of the week.
My amazingly wonderful vet is liaising with the hospital and me so we’re all “on it” to bring this to the best possible outcome.
It’s going to be a long slog but we will get there!
Amazing how such big creatures can be so delicate – we have absolutely no idea how he’s done it but he will be pleased to find out that it’s a common injury in race horses; which will of course confirm what he already thinks about his athletic abilities!
So we wait a bit longer, pray a bit harder and send every spare vibe we’ve got between us to that 750kg baby of mine.
Thanks again for all your support xx

Dear Marshall,
Happy to hear that your 2nd cataract surgery went well. You will be able to see the beautiful spring colors in all their glory soon!
My leave from work is extended until the end of March & I will be seeing more docs this month. I’m ok with this as long as I don’t run out of money & have enough leave with 1/2 pay to keep up my health insurance premiums.
Amy is doing well. We finally kicked the nasty scent gland infection for sure! Just like us, it takes our dogs longer for our bodies to get better as they get older. We’re not even sure how old Amy is-we think 11 or 12 ish. (She’s a rescue.) Cappy is doing great as well. Please say hello to Bailey & Smudge for us.
Sending prayers for everyone who is not well, both people & animals. Looking forward to both Zenny & Vixana foaling. Hopefully, we will hear about Vixana’s foaling, too. Does anyone know who she was bred to?

Marshall,
I am having the cataract surgery on Monday the 6th and again on the 20th. Ever since the surgery in October, my body has been on the warpath. Hopefully, it will decided to behave after the 20th. Glad you are healing up and doing well.

Marshall and Judy,
Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers. Not very uptight about the surgery since they cut my leg in two in Oct. Just dread all those drops.
Marshall, hope you are healing nicely and can see well. Will keep you in my prayers.
Judy, as always, thanks for your loving kindness and concern.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Shirlee,
Thank you for the healing prayers. You are correct about the drops being a bit of a pain, but as I posted in reply to Elizabeth below, you get very good at getting them into the eye! My right eye is in the tapering off stage with prednisone with one more week of application; however, the left eye is just getting started on the first two weeks regimen. I had to make myself a little schedule to check-off the applications since the first 2 weeks involve the 3 different types of drops. Some people are candidates for “dropless” protocol — the anti-inflammatory drugs are injected during the surgical procedure, but since I had Lasik surgery to correct myopia, the best plan was to go with the 3 kinds of drops daily for 2 weeks.
You will do fine. Prayers and blessings to you also.
Hugs and Love

Dear Sheena and Donna Z.,
Thanks for the well-wishes and kind words regarding my cataract surgery. The eye, while sort of gritty feeling, is doing well. The gritty feeling is a common after-effect. Just elated to have them both done. I am so grateful for Z friends, all of you!
@Donna Z.,
Good that you have an extended leave from work so you can continue with your recuperation. Hope the doctors can get you well again. I am glad Amy has recovered from the infection. Hello and ear scratches to both Amy and Cappy.

Elizabeth in NM
Dear Marshall,
So glad your surgery went well. It is a good type of procedure to have done, Decades ago I worked for an ophthalmologist who was extremely good at this. What a relief to have that done for you and on to seeing so well. God’s blessings as always.
with kind regards, Elizabeth
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Elizabeth,
Thank you for your nice post — blessings are always welcome and most appreciated. Yes, cataract procedure has really become high-tech with the use of the laser surgery. It is amazing to think that they can remove the cataract and implant a lens with very little injury to the eye, and you can be up and about immediately with only a few restrictions. Shirlee is right about the drops, but it isn’t too bad, and you get really adept at putting them in since there are 3 types of drops which go in multiple times per day(1 type of the 3 goes in once/day). One of these drops is prednisolone (prednisone) which after two weeks, you must taper off gradually by reducing the number of applications/day each week until you reach none.
How are your wildlife visitors? I look forward to roadrunner offspring sightings!
Hugs and Love
Elizabeth in NM
Dear Marshall,
Our Roadrunner pair is doing just wonderfully! Thanks so much for asking. I think we feel like they’re our ‘children’ almost. Both the Momma and the Papa RR’s are roosting every night right next to each other in cedar tree – so cute. Will keep you posted on little RR’s on the way. I was on Prednisone for several years and am off it now. I’m still taking Alphagan eye drops for glaucoma, which I was diagnosed with about 10 years ago. My eyes are doing great. I probably will be on this medication for good, but I’m grateful to be taking it, especially since I can see. Being an artist (painter), I’m especially thankful to be able to continue my artwork. Try always to take each day as a blessing. I was on a fairly heavy-duty immunosuppressant for about 8 years, and was able to go off of it (the doctors were all amazed as they had told me that I’d be on it for life, but I always say, “God is so good!”). When we lived in Alaska in the early ’60’s, we all (who lived there) got radioactivity exposure quite frequently, as all of the major countries were doing nuclear testing in the ocean between Alaska and Russia, and we’d have radioactive fallout from that. Whenever that happened, the military police would go up and down all of the streets and make the announcement on big megaphones on their trucks for everyone to go in and take showers, as we had just had nuclear fallout. When you’re kids, you just tend to take things in stride.
Every day is a gift. Anyway, so happy you’ve got that behind you now.

We the great mass of the people think only of the love we have for our land, for we do love the land where we were brought up.
Chief John Ross
We thought they would last forever-those old ones who taught us, bent us, sweetened our lives. We thought our questions would always go to them, and answers would return in familiar voices. Too many times we did not appreciate their humor, their words that chided us with lessons. Our differences were great, we thought. Our eyes wandered to other things, our voices mingled with strange ones. And suddenly, like the vapor mists that lift and fade on sun-struck mountain tops, they were gone. We did not see them go. They slipped past the boundaries to joy and rest without limit. Now the questions hang in midair without voices to answer. And the differences fade like the mists but memory persists with genuine humor, genuine love, and we, in turn, convince our young to, “Hear me now, my children…”

Dear Sheena,
I just can’t believe it’s been a year since Holly went to heaven. Still seems like yesterday. I’m sure it’s hard to believe Katie has been gone for a decade. They still live on in our hearts, though, and they’re waiting for us! And our people who have crossed to the other side…we honor them by being the best people we can be. We represent them, their love for us, the lessons they taught us. And they wait for us, too. What a great reunion we have in store for us! Too bad it’s drab for St. David’s day. All the little girls will look beautiful. Yes, Zoe’s message was so poignant. She’s such a good little Therapy Dog. She gave Mr. George nose kisses. I love those words from your friend on FB! I will look for the pic of CM and Hovis. Praying for them! Best wishes, Daniel! Oh, I’m sorry about your PC. ongrats to Bub. Lulu Bear must be adorable. Sorry, Gigginstown! Yes, should have been with Mullins. Awful news about the father killing his daughter’s boyfriend. Yes, a few questions would have been in order! I’m glad everyone survived in your town the other night. Yes, Ray looked very handsome after getting his ashes. Loved the pic of the ratties sharing their Teddy. I shared it with Steve and he thought it was really cute, too. Felix is quite the celebrity. Happy St. David’s ay! Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXOXOXOXO

I will be down at Del Mar the first week of May. I hope there will be something to see down there, that statue is pretty/nice/fun. But worth a trip from Del mar to San Diego? I will be in Del Mar, at the Hylton, for the yearly Vizsla Club of America National Events, a dog show for vizslas only, probably 3-400 vizslas from around the country. Me and my little Pepper (turned a year old yesterday) will be there to compete in confirmation. The Hylton is right next to the track! I work in licensing for the California Horse Racing Board in Sacramento, I wish some of my co-workers from southern California would be there, but no. the Meed starts much later, July I believe. So I will just have to gaze at the track and imagine racing going on!

This is so cool! Will they be auctioning off these colorful horses after a certain time?
Some towns and cities have done this: Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill had cows, I think, a few years back. There were some wolves at NCSU, too. Various artists in the area painted different motifs on them. They really were wonderful.

My Dear Sweet Neighbor,
It was a three dogs in the bed night and I believe a cat? Hope all is well and happy to read your eye surgery was successful. Used to be the “drops” lady for my late Grandmother when she had her surgery. Amazing how far that procedure has come.
Sending thoughts and prayers to all in the path of those storms.
Safe racing for all. Exciting weekend ahead!!!! Watch over the babies, Racing Gods.
Love and lots of bear hugs!
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Ann,
Thank you for the giggle about “. . .three dogs in the bed night. . .”! Bailey and Smudge do not seem to be too upset about the storms; however, I remember Huey was very uncomfortable during thunder/lightning, and Reilly would go into “the cave” (aka under the desk). My previous dogs, Skeeter and Bo, didn’t like storms either — Skeeter would go get in the walk-in shower! Bo picked up on this and started doing it, too! Then Skeeter decided he would go take cover under the desk.
It is definitely amazing to consider how much cataract surgery has progressed. I think when I was growing up, people had to remain in bed with sandbags on either side of their head to keep from moving. Then there were the “Coke bottle” glasses.
I have gotten pretty good at instilling the drops though. Vision is excellent!

The right for a good life belongs to all of us-as long as we value ti, work for it, and keep it good. We have a right to speak our minds, but we have to know the tremendous responsibility of words. We have a right to cultivate our spiritual preferences and to see them bear fruit in every good thing. It is our right to be who we are without the burden of regret and resentment. But we have to remember that our rights are limited to where our rights end-and another person’s rights begin.
These were not our ways. We kept the laws we made and lived our religion. We have never been able to understand the white man, who fools nobody but himself.

Dear Sheena,
So sorry your PC can’t be repaired. Fingers crossed it still will work for a while. Sorry there’s wind, but at least it’s dry. Beatrice is very beautiful. Hubby is so handsome. You know the baby is beautiful, too! Liz’s suit sounds lovely. Distressing to hear of that greyhound. So anxious to get some news about Hovis. Oh, I can just imagine Felix pawtographing the books! Zoe is a bright, shining light. She will persevere, I’m sure. I’m sure Mango fees better after her baff. I’m ready to move on from the Oscars. Those people really think highly of themselves! I agree AP needs rest. Sad that everything boils down to $$$. Yes, the Saudi King story was pretty unbelievable! I wish you a very happy Friday Eve. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXOXOX
