Happy Thursday!
Back in June, while on our way to Lane’s End, we stopped at Belmont to see Cozmic One. Coz, Zenyatta’s 2012 colt, is now in training with John Shirreffs. So far, we’ve followed Coz from yearling prep at Lane’s End and breaking at Mayberry Farm in Florida to his arrival and training at Belmont. (If you’ve missed anything, you can read it all here.) Today you’ll meet Omar Velez, who walks us through a typical day for the two year-old colt.
Since this video was filmed, Shirreffs has moved his barn and crew up to Saratoga. Watch the video below and then scroll down for photos. At the end of the post, you will see a glimpse into Cozmic One’s new life in Saratoga.
Enjoy!

Thank-You Thank-You, Thank-You I love the video He has really grown up and favors MOM a lot. I’am out here in California and I’am hoping we will be seeing Coz in the NOT so distant future. He seems to be very playful with his handlers and is enjoying what he is doing, thats a good thing, I hope it carries over to dance, but if it doesn’t well thats OK too. Being healthy and sound are most important, and that is my wish for you COZ. What a true Beauty you are.

Thanks for the update on the firstborn Coz. He looks good and he appears to be a handful. Liked where Omar said they have to keep him occupied or he gets bored.
One thing is for sure each of our Z babies are unique and will have their own
individual traits. No matter if we favor Coz, Ziconic or the little Princess more than the other, they will always be special and very loved.
Nancy Z.
He’s a whipper snapper indeed !

Thank you for sharing and how he has matured. Simply beautiful.

Coz looks like his sire, Bernardini, who was not as large as horses like Tapit, but still won many races. He was a bit of a late bloomer, who missed the Kentucky Derby, but then went on to be a very successful racer. On the other hand, there is Aunt Eblouissante, who never made it past the stage that Coz is in right now.
I wish I could see some of that antic, playful Coz that we saw so early on. There’s a lively personality in there that could be dynamite on a race track. Hopefully he will stop biting and will begin to find that racing is fun for him.
lauraj_cincinnati
Not true. Eblouissante is well past Coz’s current stage. She started and won her first two races, a MSW and an allowance, and has raced since, although not with success. She is currently in training and had a workout yesterday. Coz, on the other hand, is still learning. He has yet to have his first official work, get his gate card, etc.–all the things he needs to do before his first start.

Thanks for providing that clarification Laura! Good to see you here.
Especially Horses / So Cal
Lauraj: I have my fingers crossed that we will see Ebby race again soon and return to her winning ways. A reportor called her “Star-crossed” and there is a bit of truth in that…Scratched at the last minute once, another time almost flipped in the starting gate and broke a tooth (should have been scratched, but wasn’t), and there seems to be an inordinate amount of time in-between her races so that it’s hard to gage her true readiness (for example, it is as if she needs a race to “get sharp”, but then there is so much time in-between her races that the last race loses any significance in setting her up for the next race). She is such a lovely mare. I wish her the best on or off the track.

First of all. Thank you Team Z for the GREAT update on our SPECIAL young man. He is just a stunner! Whether he resembles Zenny or Bernie he is his own wonderful, talented, well groomed, handsome athlete. Time will tell. But one thing is for sure…He is something “SPECIAL”…God Bless…Lots of big hugs and kisses to Zenny and the kids..
Irene caty
Coz looks like he is doing great. I love being able to see him in his training routine. He surely looks like he is doing well and will keep watching how he excels. Thanks for the posting and will keep watching to to see how he progresses. He is a beauty and reminds me so much Of his mom Zenyatta. Thanks to all the Z team for keeping in touch With Queen Z and her kids.
Jo
Beautiful! Thank you so much, Team Z! In a day of tragedy with the loss of Dance With Fate, it is comforting to see Zenyatta’s first born and to think of the comfort and healing she has truly brought to many in so many different ways. Thank you for continuing to share the love that is Zenyatta and her progeny.
Roberta
It doesn’t seem long ago that Coz was playing in the field with the other colts; he looks huge now. He looks like he has grown since he left the farm in Florida! When he was on the track with the other horses, he looked keen to race them; the rider had to slow him down. It looks like he is getting the hang of what racing is all about, and has that competitive spirit. What a big handsome guy! Lots of racing luck Coz!!
Paula Higgins
He has really grown and looks like Mom now. Here is hoping he likes to run like Mom did.
Maureen
Wow– what a fabulous video and pics. It seems like yesterday when we were all on baby watch with Zenyatta.
How generous that Zenyatta’s team takes the time to share these moments with us. I’ve learned so much about horses from these posts! Thank you so much for sharing and keeping such a great community together.

Each time I see Coz, I am sitting in awe. He is so beautiful, and quite a handful. I remember the stories of him at Lands End.
I am just waiting to see him come out of the gate, been waiting for that day for 2 years now. I also think he looks like Zenyatta but I also see Bernardini.
I wonder how is it that the majority of us will never get to see Zenyatta or her colts up close and personal, but the love we have for her and her foals, will never end.
Thank You from my Heart, Ann and Jerry for opening up part of your life and sharing Zenyatta and her foals. I can watch you with Zenyatta, Coz, Ziconic and the Princess over and over again…
I pray that all horse owners would follow in your footsteps by loving their horses to the moon and back.
Coz is one beautiful boy!

If you don’t count the melting in the heat part, our boy seems to have had a better week (and he certainly had one coming!). Thanks, as always, to Sheena via Max for our Friday treat.

You go, Hovis!! Charm those fillies!
Glad your week has been happier than the previous one — now if only the heat would diminish. Stay cool, Mr. Cutie; Oops, I mean Mr. Macho!

He’s looking so good! It would be great to see him show some talent on the racecourse! Does anyone know how tall he is? Just wondering if he has his mother’s height.
Linda Mann
How did that cute but funny looking donkey eared baby grow up to be so drop dead gorgeous! ;-) Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful videos with us.
Kathy
Thank you Team Z for all the great insight into Coz’s daily routine. He looks fabulous. So elegant. He is really doing his mom and dad proud!

What can I add to these awesome comments? Coz is just beautiful!! His keepers are certainly the best and love their work! It shows how all horses should be treated. Many thanks to Mr and Mrs Moss for the care and love of these beautiful animals receive from Team “Z”. Thank You!!

Thank you so very much for sharing this great new blog post complete with photos and videos of our favorite first born Zenyatta son!!! Cozmic One has certainly turned into one gorgeous race horse and I’m so happy that he seems to be learning his lessons well. I hope his being a bitey boy will stop once he gets more race training going and less boredom going on. Such an exciting stage of life!! He is so beautiful just like Zenyatta and I hope he has inherited some small smidgen of her talent and heart – with that he will definitely be a winner. Thanks so much for all you do for those of us who love Zenyatta and her family.
