Second annual Zenyatta Celebration to welcome fans at the 2012 Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
Special Zenyatta seating section also available during Championships
ARCADIA, Calif. (Aug. 1, 2012) – Breeders’ Cup Ltd., along with Zenyatta owners Jerry and Ann Moss, announced today plans for the second annual Breeders’ Cup Zenyatta After-Party Celebration, to be held Championship Friday, Nov. 2, at Santa Anita Park’s Frontrunner restaurant. This year’s official event will be an exclusive evening full of Zenyatta fun following Friday’s race card and will benefit several equine and racing-related charities, including the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund and The Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses (CANTER).
The Zenyatta After-Party Celebration will be from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., providing racegoers a relaxing environment to toast the day’s winners, celebrate the past and present of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, while enjoying a twilight, panoramic view of the historic racecourse from Frontrunner. Amenities include a California buffet and cash bar featuring cocktails, race replays from Friday’s Breeders’ Cup program, entertainment, and a chance to meet Zenyatta’s connections and other racing celebrities.
Scheduled appearance and autograph signing at the event will be with trainer John Shirreffs, Dottie Shirreffs, racing manager for the Moss Racing Stable and the voice of the Zenyatta Diary, and jockey Mike Smith. Smith will bring along some of his fellow jockeys and other racing celebrities to mingle with partygoers. The After-Party Celebration will also feature the auction of Zenyatta memorabilia, artwork and an all-expense-paid trip to see Zenyatta and her growing colt at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Ky.
After-Party Celebration tickets are $50 for admission only, or $95 for admission combined with the buffet. Tickets are available for sale today on a first-come basis at the Zenyatta Shop.
As an added benefit for “The Queen’s” most loyal fans, Premier Grandstand seating in the designated Zenyatta Section during the Breeders’ Cup World Championships is now available online at http://www.breederscup.com/tickets/grandstand-reserved or by calling 877-TIX4CUP (877-849-4287). Tickets are $150 for Friday and $200 for Saturday. Included with the special section tickets is a complimentary Autumn season Clubhouse pass to Santa Anita Park, as well as a unique Zenyatta souvenir.
“We are thrilled that the Zenyatta Celebration will once again be a highlight at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships,” said Jerry and Ann Moss. “Santa Anita Park holds many special memories for us as the site of some of Zenyatta’s finest racing accomplishments.”
“Santa Anita Park has rolled out the red carpet for international race-goers and especially Zenyatta fans as they prepare for another Breeders’ Cup World Championship,” said Robert Elliston, Breeders’ Cup Chief Operating Officer. “The Zenyatta After-Party Celebration will be a fabulous way to honor one of Breeders’ Cup’s most popular stars and also raise funds for industry-related causes.”
Throughout her extraordinary racing career, Zenyatta thrilled racing fans with jaw-dropping victories and heart-pounding finishes. However, it was her memorable Breeders’ Cup performances, including her victories in the 2008 Ladies’ Classic, the 2009 Classic and her incredible finish at Churchill Downs in the 2010 Classic, that sealed her stardom and ignited a fan frenzy that has transcended the sport and endeared this stunning mare to millions.

Doctor Hansen, who already rated pretty high with me for his previous kindness to you and your kids, just made a quantum leap in my opinion of him. Hope you have a great time. In addition, Mike Smith is one of the nicest men in racing. This is a combo anyone could get behind. We expect a full report as we are living vicariously through you.

Bad news on the show jumping front. Beezie Madden was eliminated today when her horse uncharacteristcally refused a jump. The rest of the US team advances. Eric Lamaze had a clear round on Derly Chin de Muze for Canada. However the late Hickstead is still missed.

Sign. He loves his “work”. JudyB discovered that the whole family is pretty much together. There are in fact four brothers who are in training with Henry Cecil, Bullet Train, Frankel, Noble Mission and Morpheus. The brothers can see each other every day! Kind is only 3 miles away at another Juddmonte farm. A sister filly as yet unnamed is a yearling who has probably been sent to Ireland.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
WOW THAT IS AMAZING, the whole family being trained by Henry.
Another one of those get to know the families !!!
Max
Sign. There is hope that Z’s babies can stay together if they all go to John Sherriffs. Aunt Ebby is already there.
That might also be the reason that Frankel would not move stalls. He wanted to be with his brothers? Horses like to be with their own kind. I also noticed that Bullet Train is the only pacemaker whom Frankel will follow. He ignored the others.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Max,
More like a “dominance” move. He is already the “head guy” in his barn and when he changes barns he knows he will have to work his way “up”. He can also “boss” his siblings around more easlily.
It is all about herd order and dominance !!!!
Max
Sign. By the sounds of it, Frankel bosses everyone. He is in charge. LOL.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Definately Max, even his humans.
He just wanted to keep it that way.

The selection of “Derly” by Eric Lamaze for Canada in the Olympics.
Need to ride those young ones every step and aggressively, lots of work
for the rider !!!
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/showjumping/opinion/2012/07/eric-lamaze-picks-derly-chin-de-muze-as-olympic-mount.html
Max
Sign. Thanks for this. I do not know why he did not pick Coriana van Klapscheut. I love her. She reminds me of Neville Bardos, although he’s a thoroughbred. Nev and Otis are great horses.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Max,
It seems like size may be an issue. The mare he picked is young but very big and scopy, she just need to be ridden every step.
Corina is small and may not have been able to perform as well over the course. When you are jumping the height and width of these jumps, size is definately a variable. GOOD LUCK TO ERIC !!!!
Do they have to bring a number of horses, too for the Olympic jumping???
Derly is a very beautiful chestnut mare.
Max
Sign. The decision was not made by Eric alone. It is like Neville Bardos. The Canadian team picked Derly as the most competitive for the Games. Derly was purchased for Eric by Eric’s chief sponsor who is American. Apparently my Cori can be quite temperamental. She likes to buck in the ring and she resents it if they try to correct her. She has a take no prisoners attitude. People back off when she’s around. Great little horse.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Often times, Grand Prix/Olympic jumpers are very tempermental.
Shutter Fly is very hard to ride as is Checkmate.
Jumping High through a large long course gets them reved up
and then they have to collect back.
Working with Cori, just takes soft hands, gentle asking to temper her strong personality. Size definatley has to do with stamina and ability to jump long and large jumps consistently. A rider of Eric’s capability/caliber should not have trouble with her temperment issues. Those issues make her very talented.
Have you see Mr. Whoopie, talk about strong and buck buck buck
between fences. He is a real character !!!
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Max
In jumping your legs are the “gas pedal”, when a horse refuses or
has temperment issues at the jump, lack of confidence or boldness as new
young jumpers do. The leg is used to get them over the jump.
Good solid pressure, not too much in the case of Corina, will get them over.
With a tempermental sort, it has to be firm, but able to be quickly released
when they get “fussy” or upset, but still able to move her forward and over.
Just a bit of finese, which I am sure Eric Lamaze has no problem with.
But who did the qualifiers chose ???? They want the best horse that can win for their country ???
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks for that, sign. I don’t know a lot about the sport, but love watching it. I have seen Olympics all week, looking for horses, and finally there was equestrian jumping 1st round today. Such beautiful animals, even if not Zenyatta. Less enjoyable was the German rider with a doping suspension from Beijing, who confirmed my thoughts of him by whipping his horse after a stumble & several rails fell. The whipping just didn’t seem warranted, the horse did not appear to be threatening anything.
Max
Vicki B. I hate it when they use the whip on jumpers. It is used to correct errors so that the horse will understand what was done wrong and not repeat it. Still hate it.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Vicki B, Max and Z Fans:
I don’t think they should be allowed to use the whip in the case of a stumble or dropped rails. You’re right, it isn’t warranted and it isn’t kind. I think it makes the horse more fearful and less well behaved. Hugs, JB
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Max & Judy, I agree. Such people need to be taking lessons from Buck Brannaman, or else leave the sport.
Max
Eric Lamaze used the whip on Derly just last month at Spruce Meadows. It was done after she refused to jump. He also spoke sternly to her. It seemed to work because she then tried the same jump and did it perfectly. I can tell you that it was not done harshly but I still did not like to see it. After the race, Eric said in an interview that he had concerns about Derly and whether she should go to the Olympics. He said that he did not want to push her too hard and ruin “her career.” A nice guy.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Max,
Eric used the appropriate tactics with her. He must get her over and tell her to go over to get her through her lack of confidence. He rode her with confidence and told her she must go over. A whip is what makes the demand along with his legs and voice. Without his strength she will be come insecure and not be able to continue on. That is what a good and talented experienced rider does with his/her green horses to give them confidence. She now know there are no animals on the back side of the jump that are going to attack her. She can not see the back of the jump and does not know what is on the other side.
If they refuse a lot, they will never go over and get very insecure.
The whip tells them they better go over. When Jethro did not go over, I had to use a very strong leg and demand with my body language that he go over. He would not have anything to do with the whip.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Max,
With a young horse, Eric is absolutely correct. If you push them too hard
they will not be able to perform and move forward, because it is too much for her. She is very young and inexperienced.
Vinny the warmblood I rode was pushed too hard to be a jumper by his owner, he started acting up and had to be put out to pasture for a while so he could clear his head and then started again.
GirlSaratoga
Vicki B:
I agree, no rider should be whipping their horse for a stumble or a missed jump! I hope the horse bit him hard! I DON NOT SEE A REASON FOR THIS BEHAVIOR? Thank God I don’t get whipped when I trip or stumble, I would be black and blue all over!
GirlSaratoga
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
GS,
It is a way to get the horse over the jump and build confidence.
Again, you are using “human” emotions, yours to judge an appropriate
riding tactic.
Max
Sign is right. Derly did not seem to mind at all about the whip. This is the way that the rider has to communicate with the horse. If the whip is used too harshly, the judges would take action. After the race, Derly seemed to be quite happy, but no where as happy as Beezie Madden’s horse who won. When they win, these jumpers are very proud of themselves. It is quite marvelous to watch. One time when Hickstead won at Spruce Meadows he lost a shoe in the competition. They decided to replace the shoe in the ring before the winner’s ceremony. Eric was interviewed while this was going on. You could see Hickstead in the background, watching Eric like a hawk and eager to get the chore over so that he could get his reward. It was really very good.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Max,
You are right, these jumpers are very amazing animals.
They so love their job.
Jethro was no where near the level we are seeing in these Olympics or any Grand Prix.
But if you showed him a jump, he was game, the higher the better and the more excited. He was also a very good strategizer and very bold to keep himself entertained. He would take the 5 stride jumps in 3 and as the rider you better hang on and go with him or fall off !!!!!!

Very sorry to see Star Billing finish second, but she did very well nevertheless. She will race again and win. John Sherriffs has a definite affinity for training fillies and mares. I am certain that Big D would be proud of his filly.

Thamks for the link to Holy Null, I didn’t know he was Giacamo’s Daddy, how cool, now we know where he got his speed and talent! Beautiful video, thanks for sharing it with all of us.

I want to make a contribution to Thunder but I don’t do online banking or paypal! Can u with give a way I can send a check or money order? Or if it’s easier a link with the information would be fine too! Won a little money at the slots today, and would like to make a donation! I wish it could be a “BIG” one as I was hoping and praying to hit the “BIG” jackpot so that I could make a dent in his much needed surgery. Who knows going back on Wednesday, maybe I’ll be a lucky lady!
Any help you could provide would be much appreciated!

Dear Girl Saratoga,
I believe that Thunder’s rescuer, Carol Deeble, would be more than happy to give you a snail-mail address if you e-mail her at fundforthunder@gmail.com or write her a message on Thunder’s webpage at http://fundforthunder.webs.com/contact . Thank you for joining in the effort to get Thunder his needed surgery! High hoof!

Hey I just found out that Life is Sweet was sent to Tapit this year too. So we can look forward to both she and Zenny having the same baby’s daddy again this year. Also, Z’s 1/2 sister Where’s Bailey was sent to Z’s sire Street Cry for the second time. She already has a 2010 filly by Street Cry. So may babies to keep an eye out for in the next couple of years.

Don’t forget that our “Prince Z” and Rachel’s new filly will be half’s! Same daddy! There are going to be some fine looking babies to watch for in 2015 and 2016! Thanks for the update, love to hear who hookin’ up with who!

GirlSaratoga. There will be no recognized TB breeding relationship between 12Z and the forthcoming RA filly by Bernie. Relations are traced through the female line only. To be related as full or half siblings, foals have to have the same mother. For thoroughbreds, the dam is the determining factor for families.

Thanks for the TB lesson today, I didn’t know that! I just love this group….if you don’t know something you ask, and if you think you know something and are completely wrong, you get the correct info! Such a wealth o knowledge here! And the links are to die for!
Thanks for my valuable lesson today!

GirlSaratoga. You are welcome. It is always important to look first at the dam line as a predictor of racing ability. Henry Cecil says this. If you look at Frankel, his dam line is as strong as his sire line. It is the same for 12Z. Zenyatta has a marvelous female family which explains some of her greatness. Street Cry also has contributed unquestionable talent. However with Z her excellence is also based on what the French call the “je ne sais quoi ” factor, which is unique and all about her.

Once again I didn’t know it was all about the “girl power”! But very interesting info! I will definitely pay more attention to the dam’s and not the daddy’s! I guess I thought it was all about the “stud” and not the momma! Maybe this will help with my future bets and future winnings!
Thanks! :-)

Dear GirlSaratoga, Max and Z Fans:
Max is correct. The half sibling relationship in TB’s depends on their having the same Dam not the same Sire. I do take liberties there; I plead guilty. I made the comparison of Macho Macho and MMM being half brothers because they have the same sire, Macho Uno. Technically, I’m wrong. Don’t want to give you misleading info. Hugs, JB

GS,
It is a combination of dam and sire. Sometimes one contributes more than
the other, but when both are strong their is a greater influence.
Like Hansen, his dam was unraced and not well know, bred to Tapit and
he got a lot of great traits from his sire.
Breeding is such a crap shoot, not to say some of Zenny’s foals may also
be claimers as well. We will never know until they come to the track.
Like the Green Monkey, 16 million dollars and not able to race at high levels.
