Second annual Zenyatta Celebration to welcome fans at the 2012 Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
Special Zenyatta seating section also available during Championships
ARCADIA, Calif. (Aug. 1, 2012) – Breeders’ Cup Ltd., along with Zenyatta owners Jerry and Ann Moss, announced today plans for the second annual Breeders’ Cup Zenyatta After-Party Celebration, to be held Championship Friday, Nov. 2, at Santa Anita Park’s Frontrunner restaurant. This year’s official event will be an exclusive evening full of Zenyatta fun following Friday’s race card and will benefit several equine and racing-related charities, including the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund and The Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses (CANTER).
The Zenyatta After-Party Celebration will be from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., providing racegoers a relaxing environment to toast the day’s winners, celebrate the past and present of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, while enjoying a twilight, panoramic view of the historic racecourse from Frontrunner. Amenities include a California buffet and cash bar featuring cocktails, race replays from Friday’s Breeders’ Cup program, entertainment, and a chance to meet Zenyatta’s connections and other racing celebrities.
Scheduled appearance and autograph signing at the event will be with trainer John Shirreffs, Dottie Shirreffs, racing manager for the Moss Racing Stable and the voice of the Zenyatta Diary, and jockey Mike Smith. Smith will bring along some of his fellow jockeys and other racing celebrities to mingle with partygoers. The After-Party Celebration will also feature the auction of Zenyatta memorabilia, artwork and an all-expense-paid trip to see Zenyatta and her growing colt at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Ky.
After-Party Celebration tickets are $50 for admission only, or $95 for admission combined with the buffet. Tickets are available for sale today on a first-come basis at the Zenyatta Shop.
As an added benefit for “The Queen’s” most loyal fans, Premier Grandstand seating in the designated Zenyatta Section during the Breeders’ Cup World Championships is now available online at http://www.breederscup.com/tickets/grandstand-reserved or by calling 877-TIX4CUP (877-849-4287). Tickets are $150 for Friday and $200 for Saturday. Included with the special section tickets is a complimentary Autumn season Clubhouse pass to Santa Anita Park, as well as a unique Zenyatta souvenir.
“We are thrilled that the Zenyatta Celebration will once again be a highlight at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships,” said Jerry and Ann Moss. “Santa Anita Park holds many special memories for us as the site of some of Zenyatta’s finest racing accomplishments.”
“Santa Anita Park has rolled out the red carpet for international race-goers and especially Zenyatta fans as they prepare for another Breeders’ Cup World Championship,” said Robert Elliston, Breeders’ Cup Chief Operating Officer. “The Zenyatta After-Party Celebration will be a fabulous way to honor one of Breeders’ Cup’s most popular stars and also raise funds for industry-related causes.”
Throughout her extraordinary racing career, Zenyatta thrilled racing fans with jaw-dropping victories and heart-pounding finishes. However, it was her memorable Breeders’ Cup performances, including her victories in the 2008 Ladies’ Classic, the 2009 Classic and her incredible finish at Churchill Downs in the 2010 Classic, that sealed her stardom and ignited a fan frenzy that has transcended the sport and endeared this stunning mare to millions.

Just a comment about Fort Larned …one I did not act on…he has Nashua in his pedigree on both mom and dad’s side…..just like our incomparable Zenny….wish I had given that more thought before I placed my bet

Dea Carol,
I am not part of the “league”, but I was watching and when I saw Fort Larned, I thought to myelf, “He IS Gorgeous”, I would have picked him, and was so pleased when he won. I know that is not very professional hanidicapping, but Hey, whatever works, works. Right?

Dear Max,
Here is Duncan Mc Farlane and Mr Whoopie, his gand prix jumper stallion.
Lots and lots and lots and lots of head tossing, and bucking between jumps.
He is young maybe 9 now. The male side of hormonal rather than female.
It is really fun to watch him, but lots of wasted energy on the horses part,
but he love’s to “party”. He is a warmblood, too, I believe.

Description of Mr. Whoopy !!
“Fourth to go clean was the awesome Duncan McFarlane and the brilliant bay stallion “Mr. Whoopy”, owned by Simone Coxe. Talk about a fantastic partnership! Wow again! This pair is always so much fun to watch! Mr. Whoopy’s talent is profound, his scope and power explosive. His jumping seems effortless, as if he could jump the moon if he so desired, and even that would be easy. He appeared to be completely non plussed by these big jumps, as if they were child’s play. And play he does, between every fence. Duncan is an unbelievably skilled and tactful rider, any other would probably be face first in the ‘Eurofelt’. But not Duncan. He’s like a steady and consistent ‘burr’ in the tack, allowing this playful and rambunctious behavior as a harmless side effect to a spectacularly talented and successful stallion. Hats off to you Duncan, and…Rock on Mr. Whoopy!”
Darlene Daniels
Max
I have missed all of this, but that is a wonderful description! Thank you for sharing.
Are you going to the Breeders Cup?
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Max and Dalrene,
Mr. Whoopie and his rider, Duncan McFarlane have not been in the Olympics.
His rider rides for New Zealand, but has dual riding capability with the US,
but was not able to get qualified for the Olympics. May be in 2016, Mr.
Whoopie will be around 15 yo, which is a prime age for a Grand Prix Jumper and Olympic horse.
Max
Darlene. Sign is the one to thank.

He is a very talented stallion.

I am not the only person that didn’t approve of the whip! And your probably right “human” emotions! I am a caregiver of horses, and have some experience, I guess I will learn to keep my comments to myself, so that I don’t embarrass myself and avoid the stern reprimand I seem to get. Your knowledge marvels me and though your experience out weighs mine by a mile, I feel it best not to comment anymore, maybe I am over sensitive when it comes to horses and whips and abuse (not that I feel Eric was abusive).
Thanks for setting me straight once again!
GirlSaratoga
Good luck to all with your handicapping, I will be withdrawing, Thanks for the great conversations, I have thoroughly enjoyed them
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
GS,
What you have said is not a problem and should be shared so that it can be clarified
by those who have riding and horse experience at a certain level.
It is just very important to know that the hand, the voice, the leg, the whip and the body are the aids a rider uses to train and ride a horse. They all have a purpose and those riders in the OLYMPICS AND GRAND PRIX are using all of them in an appropriate fashion.
A HORSE IS A PREY ANIMAL, WHEN THEY DON’T GO OVER A JUMP AS A YOUNG IN EXPERIENCED HORSE THEY THINK THERE IS A CAT OR A DOG ON THE OTHER SIDE WAITING TO ATTACK THEM. IT IS THAT SIMPLE. THEY MUST GO OVER SO THEY KNOW THEIR IS NO FEAR ON THE OTHER SIDE.
THE “BABY” JUMPERS (7, 8, 9 YEARS OLD), MUST BE NURTURED BUT FIRMLY
DEALT WITH BY THEIR RIDERS SO THEY CAN BE A SUCCESSFUL JUMPER.
THEREFORE THEY NEED TO BE PUSHED APPROPRIATELY USING ALL OF THE AIDS
TO MAKE THEM A SUCCESS.
FEELING SORRY FOR A HORSE WILL ONLY GET YOU A VERY INSECURE HORSE THAT IS UNABLE TO PERFORM TO THE LEVEL THEY ARE CAPABLE OF.
IT IS LIKE TAKING A CHILD AND CODDELING IT SO IT IS UNABLE TO FUNCTION IN LIFE AS AN ADULT.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Also remember they are jumping close to 6 feet high and 4 to 5 feet wide.
Very scary for a human as well as a horse.
Max
GirlSaratoga. Please do not leave. TerryC needs you for the Rednecks, the handicappers would miss you in their current endeavors and the supporters of Bobby Frankel want you to stay in the group. GirlSaratoga,
What? What’s going on, what did I miss? You can’t quit now you and Judy are the ones that got me into this!! It sounds like your feelings are hurt by something someone said, but don’t take offense. Everyone on this site is truly nice and caring, and I’m sure they didn’t mean it in a hurtful way. It’s always hard to tell someone’s tone thru the written word, it’s happened to me too, but don’t quit the game or this site you have lots to offer! Hugs Sue
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Sue,
Sorry for the confusion, we were talking about the whip use in the Olympics with the Grand Prix jumpers. Some folks on this site don’t realize it is an aid to help the horses become
brave to jump 6 feet.
Not any relation to the fun we are having with the game.
Louise Castello
I think GS felt singled out because Max, Judy B, and Vickie B. all said the same thing and she was feeling a little sensitive. And YES I am aware it’s none of my business. but I was reading this and felt sorry for her! Sorry!
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
The comment was made for all who addressed the whip issue in relationship to
the jumpers. No one was singled out.
There is a purpose for it and it must be used appropriately in all equestrian sports
as an aid. In racing it also has a purpose because jockey’s do not
have the leg to use as an aid.
Some horses do not do well with it like Acclimation. His owner, watched the races and when the whip was used he quit running, which is a sure sign he does not like it. When a horse moves forward when it is used and responds
then it is appropriate.
Max
The use of the whip is a sensitive subject and a very tough call in racing. Northern Dancer was another horse on whom they could not use a whip. His owner instructed the jockeys never to use it. His dam Natalma had refused to race at all if the whip was used and she passed that attitude on to him as well as an aversion to Belmont. The British have recently brought in fines and suspensions if more than a certain number of strokes are used by jockeys in the last furlongs of races. No one really likes to see a whip used, but sometimes it is necessary in order to navigate the track. Still I hate it.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Max,
You are right, some horses do not like it and will balk, not run, stop,
rear up, run into a fence when you use it.
However, it is an aid to give the horse directions and should be used
in certain situations to communicate.
I think the whip rule in GB came about with Frankie D, whipping the young
horse repetatively that broke down. That is abuse.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Also, Louise did you see Max’s comment regarding the whip ??????
Not all horses need or should be rescued.
Some of them have good self-esteem, good owners that treat them well and know how to train them to perfection using all of the aids appropriately. The horses who win in their disciplines know they are great and love what they do and can’t wait to get back to it. Even the dressage horses like TOTOLIS are
so very awesome. Their expession and fluidity are just amazing.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
It is your business !!!
However, look at all the fact and the discussion as well.
Louise Castello
Sign, Thank you for saying it was my business! Really it wasn’t, but thanks! Anyway, I know nothing about riding horses, I’m just a fan and I trust what you say about this issue. I wasn’t commenting about the whip issue, I think you are absolutely right! I guess I was just feeling bad for GS cause her feelings seemed so hurt and I think she felt singled out. Listen, I’m just a novice who enjoys reading everyone’s posts and your knowledge is fascinating to me. So I’m sorry for butting in and I appreciate learning from you. I love everything you said about jumping and I especially loved the video of Mr. Whoopie! Wow! Thanks for that!

Dear Louise:
Look forward to your posts and your comments. Never feel you are butting in; just joining in a conversation. The use of the whip, when and if appropriate, is always an issue for debate. As Max said, some times it is necessary, but I hate it too.

Sign and Judy, Thanks again!
Marty R / Colorado
Yesterday I watched the W.V. Derby being televised. Prior to the race, Dr. Hansen was sitting with the announcers and they asked DR. H. why he does things like dye Hansen’s tail. He said he does it to put some fun in racing and make it fun for young people. Then he said there was a fifth grade class in Ohio, Mrs. Volz’s class, I do it for them, and he named a couple others, but they didn’t register, I was so excited to hear him mention Shari’s class.
I’m definitely no expert, but my thoughts were that Hansen used a lot of energy in the post parade and looked wet to me from sweating. He actually looked like a darker gray horse going into the gate. There was some mention made by the announcers about the length of the race and if it was a good length for Hansen. Maybe his connections are expecting more length than he can handle. It’s almost seems like a repeat with Shackleford from last year.
@Darlene Daniels, I hope your bruises have healed and CONGRATS. on being able to go to the BC this year. I think everyone there will be in awe of the Zennyatta fans in attendance.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Definately correct Marty R.
Dr. Hansen is trying for the second time to see if Hansen is a long distance horse and he is not. More money at stud if he is.
Now we know Shackelford is not a sprinter and he hates Saratoga and an off track.
He broke in the fourth position, when his feet hit he mud he said, “Yuck this really stinks,
I hate the mud”. Came in last.
Max
Sign. This did not register at first when I read it. I thought that you were talking about a much earlier race. Shack last in the Vanderbilt. Wow.
Ann
Don’t they give MUD baths at the SPA?
Poor Shack,it really was not his day. Still luv me some Shack.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Love that comment Ann.
Shack deserves a big mud bath, lots of carrots and TLC.
Who says horses don’t talk, he said a lot with this one.
Dale Romans said he threw a “clunker”.
Keta
Sign,
Shack is 0 for 3 in the mud.
Perhaps there is a message there.
Keta
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Keta,
Definately agree. Did you see the way he broke, it was like
“YUCK, what kind of dirt is this, it is messing up my clean, bright
and shinny hooves, it makes me slip and slide around. I really hate
it, why does that trainer of mine make me run on this kind of track???
He knows I hate it. ”
Footing is so very important for a horse.
Lisag In Texas
Perfectly correct, Hansen is improving and running longer distances as he matures, and should keep working at it, but for now he needs to enter is Handsome self into shorter races for the WIN. Lisag
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Definatley agree Lisa G.
Terry Crow GP
Nice to hear that Doctor Hansen gave our Shari some pub. I hate to say it but I think Mike gave hansen a bad ride. In his comeback race this year he showed somewhat of an abilityto rate. Mike should have stalked the 100-1 shot that was on the lead and took over in the stretch. Of course, who am I to give a hall of fame rider advice. Hindsight is always 50-50.
Maryp (New York)
Terry, You are right about hindsight but I agree with you. I certainly don’t have a lot of knowlege on racing but Hansen didn’t have anything left for the finish and I love Mike. I read where he’s heading for the Travers maybe with another rider.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
So what do you think was wrong with the ride??? I think it was the distance
he has not been able to go long yet !!! Trying to put a square peg in a round
hole for more money at stud I believe.
Maybe he tried to rate him and Hansen would not let him.
The dueling really took a lot out of Hansen.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC

Here is another filly who has beaten the boys, a lot of them. Irish Mission won the mile and a half third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown today at Woodbine. She was given a 5 lb advantage because she is female. This filly is a very big girl, at least 17 hands, and towers over the guys, especially her nearest rival. Her father is Giant’s Causeway while her mother is Misty Mission, with good US horses in her dam side pedigree.
No Canadian Triple Crown winner this year.

I love those EURO filly’s they are really something else !!!

Also Congratulations to Miss Derek, I know you didn’t win but nice effort.

He sure looked like his mom out on that race track today. Can’t foret Giants Causeway too. He almost won.

What? SHack last??? Oh no!. Have to go to the videos now.

No video but here are the details. Sad about this. Romans thinks that it was the mud. Shack had Johnny V with him so that between them there was talent to spare. Next time, Shack.

Here is the video of the Vanderbilt. Shack does not appear to be racing to his usual pace. It must be the surface which annoyed him and he decided to give this race a pass. Next time, Shack.

From watching the race, it was apparent that two things were working against Shack. Number one, he drew the rail, not the best place to be in a six furlong race. Number two was the off track. Shack had not shown a liking for Saratoga under optimum conditions. The rider did not peresevere with him when the stretch drive came. Smart move. Why keep riding hard when the only thing at stake was 6th place rather than last? Differant track, differant distance and Shack will return to his normal self.

Someone Mentioned Buck Brennaman as a trainer.
If you look on his web site, the DVD on ground manners includes the use of the whip when lunging and driving the horse. These are essential skills and require a whip to learn them.
It is a part of equipment that is an extension of the human.
There is not a trainer that does not at some point use ti.

Disgusted, Just Disgusted
Well, if yesterday wasn’t a whirlwind for the world of horse racing I honestly don’t know what could possibly qualify. We had several top horses racing at Saratoga, topped off by the Whitney Handicap, and Hansen running with a blue tail in the West Virginia Derby. All the talk was centered on either Ron the Greek and could he get his third grade one win and how Hansen should walk all over the entrants in the West Virginia Derby. Neither happened, yet one set off a reaction, which I would have to say I’m utterly disgusted with.
As we all know Hansen did not win the West Virginia Derby. He didn’t finish second or third, but fourth. By the comments I read, you would have thought that the horse had the perfect trip before finishing dead last in the field. Ok, let’s review what actually happened shall we? The horse broke well, went for the lead before he encountered a rabbit on a suicide mission by the name of Hero of Order. Was the pace overly quick, at first glance no, compared to Tapizar’s race, not even close. However, notice that while Tapizar cleared the field, got into a good rhythm, and was running comfortably with his ear pricked, up until about a quarter of a mile out, Hansen never relaxed and was constantly hounded by Hero of Order, who was constantly being hounded by his jockey to keep up despite him clearly being finished. It is not rocket science to know that a relaxed horse uses less energy than one that is keyed up.
After Hero of Order finally tailed off, Hansen looked as though he actually might still win, despite never fully relaxing. Entering the stretch there was daylight between him and the next horse, but it didn’t last long as the effects finally began to take their toll. The colt still ran valiantly, but had nothing left and was beaten by just over two lengths, not 20, as some may have believed just by reading the hateful comments left over the internet, after the race.
What surprises me is that all those hateful comments are focused at the owner and horse. So, Dr. Hansen wanted to run his colt with a blue tail. So he’s enthusiastic, dear god forbid he be enthusiastic. I saw a picture of the blue tail, and did not find it that distasteful. In fact, I barely noticed it, so again, what is the big deal? What is surprising and disgusting is that out of all those hateful, evil comments not one was directed at the rider of Hero of Order. I have nothing against the use of rabbits, it is strategy. However, after the horse is done in, let them gallop out. Do not ride them for all they are worth, after they clearly have nothing left to give. How did such a disgusting ride go unnoticed? The blue tail you say? Get over it. The blue tail did not harm Hansen, the way the jockey rode Hero of Order, on what I heard was a very hot day in WV, was unethical and cruel to the horse. That is what people should be talking about, not a blue tail.
After watching that ride, I hope the jockey of Hero of Order was taken aside and reamed by the owner or trainer or both. I hope the stewards took the time to look at that ride and see how disgusting it was. I hope they suspend him for the treatment of that horse. You want to talk about something, and then talk about that. Something that deserves to have anger and heat directed its way. Not about how much a champion sucks, or how his owner is an idiot, or how stupid the blue tail looked, because in the whole scheme of things, which is really worse? That tail, or how Hero of Order was punished during that race?

This is an excellent summary of events in the WV Derby, Keta
Same thing happened to UR when he got boxed in in the Fla Derby.
Race riding and it is one way to do a front runner in pressure him so he
can’t relax.

I mentioned his blue tail as a bad omen in gest !!!!

Ann-Someone using the hatpin method could top him. One useful purpose a trainer like this serves. You can eliminate his horse automatically.
Terry Crow GP
Keta-very good analysis. Mike should have taken back off the rabbit but jockeys are paid to make race decisions. You are also correct about fractions. There is a huge differance between breezing uncontested on a lead and being pfressured all the way. The fractions may be the same, but the toll taken on the horse is not the same. Have to wonder if the jock on Hero of Order had a conversation with some fellow riders before the race in private. When Shoemaker was riding high, his friend William Harmatz would often soften up a speed horse to give Shoe’s horse a better chance. Unless, of course, Shoe was on the speed horse.

Terry, Sign, Barbara, & Max,
This was written by Laura Pugh. (I found it so interesting I had to share.)
For ten years my passion for horses has steadily grown. I started out in the hunter/jumper industry and have been showing for nearly eight years now. However, my main focus has become Thoroughbred racing. The first race I ever watched was War Emblem’s Preakness in 2002, and from there I have soaked up any knowledge containing racing that I can find.
I created my own blog Horsin’ Around in August of 2009. As a blogger I became known for my knack of creating heated debates on several subjects and not being shy about sharing my opinion on any matter. I hope you will enjoy reading and debating with me, as much as I enjoy my job as a blogger.

Hi GirlSaratoga,
I have been dealing with my sick pets and not following the blog much at all.
I don’t know what happen that upset you. I hope you are feeling better today. I understand that someone may say something here on the site that could be upsetting. It happen to me several months ago. I was at first hurt by the comment. We are not all going to think or act like we may want all the time. There are people here that have great knowledge and people like me that just love horses and know very little about them. I am learning something each day or at least when I have time to read. My point is don’t give up something you LOVE for a few words that stung a bit. I didn’t and am still enjoying this site and all my new friends. You are one of my new friends. You should not leave us please. love Sue

I didn’t know they used whips at the Grand Prix events, I’ve seen them, been to them but I guess I never noticed a whip? I guess I was paying too much attention on the horses and their talents! I understand what you are saying and it makes sense! They jump high and wide and they don’t know what’s in front of them or behind them! I guess 7, 8, and 9 year old’s are considered young compared to race horses Thanks for the info, I appreciate it, it’s amazing what these beauties can and will do! I did know about the legs and the voice commands, but not the whip. i now know that all of this equipment make these horse so great and a joy to watch.

GS,
Great insight, yes some of the riders do carry “crops” (english riding term for whip). In fact in one of the videosyou will see Duncan Mc Farlane with one on Mr. Whoopie. Imagine that. They are very hard to see and not used much in GP jumping because they are smaller.
Warmblood horses mature much later that TB so they are trained later. Grand Prix jumping is very hard on the bones, muscles and ligaments so they start jumping much later than TB because of this.
It is very good to be sensitive to issues and aware of the reasons why also. You are such a welcome member to our family. The whip/crop issue “crops” up here a lot,
having ridden for a number of years using it properly is very important in training
and riding.
John Sherriffs had Steve use a dressage whip on Zenny when she was training to keep her from leaning into the gate. This type of whip is very long and thin and taps them on the hind end or shoulder to remind them to straighten up.
Thanks for all you contribute to this site and very glad to have you here.

The crop/whip issue is similar to the chain over the nose or in the mouth! Always a “BIG” debate, especially at work! I understand it is a safety issue……however with my group who are well over 17 hands, close to 18, they DON’T like it! They seem to fuss and act terribley when it’s being done to them. I am the smallest and lightess person that works there, so I generally don’t handle the “really big guys” but over the past few months, I have studied their behavior, and realized they don’t like the chain any where except hooked under their halters. Well…long story short, a couple of the owner’s requested I handle their prized posessions (these horses are show horses, and worth a lot of money) my manager was a little concerned because as Mr. Martinez said in his video “My Job” the pairing of people with the size of the horse is important. “Big Meeting” to discus my size and weight and handling these bigger horses. Well….fast forward and I now handle all the “big guys” and the ex-race horses, because I took the time to watch and observe their behaviors and quirkiness ‘s. “My race horses are always ready to “go” and want to be the first ones out! My big guys just want to be handled with care, a little head swishing, a little two step, and a little kindness!
I wanted to share this with you, because I do understand the whip/crop it’s part of the horses training and probably for the rider and horses saftey too! Yhey need to feel safe…..that on the other side of the jump everything is “ok”
