Happy Friday!
You may have spotted an additional foal in Alys’ photo above. Zenyatta and 13Z were moved into a larger paddock this week, and they’re now turned out with two other mares.
Our Ask The Experts column has been on hiatus for a few months, and we’re happy to announce its return. The knowledgeable staff at Lane’s End will be answering questions from readers on a variety of topics. If you have been wondering anything about Zenyatta’s life as a broodmare or have a question related to foals, yearlings or Thoroughbred breeding, please send in your questions using the form below.
We have even more in store for you, as we’ll be kicking off the weekend with a Zenyatta Shop update. Look for a blog post tomorrow morning.
Enjoy!

Edit: Thank you to everyone who submitted a question. Look for answers in future blog posts!

I confess that my first love is Secretariat and I’ve been watching youtube videos all night of him and thinking how I wish that I could reach Ann and Jerry Moss to make lengthy videos of Zenyatta. There’s so few of Secretariat for me to savor and I don’t want that to happen to our blessed Queen. If no one has time to hold a camera on her all day, I will. FREE OF CHARGE… Really. Just vids of her doing nothing but horse things would be beautiful. I saw on youtube where people visited Secretariat and his stall and layed in the straw where he slept. I’m so afraid that one day Zenyatta will be gone and I’ll have no chance of ever seeing her. While I appreciate the short videos here, they wouldn’t be enough if she was gone. Chenery didn’t leave us enough of Red. You all are right there every single day with Zenyatta. Please take some vids or let me.

I noticed what large eyes some foals have. Are foals eyes full size when they’re born or do eyes also grow?

Hi everyone and kisses to my Big Girl and her two boys!
My mum’s cat had to be put down early last week. I’ve been running back & forth to the vet with him over the last 3 weeks, so I’ve hardly been at the computer except infrequently. Mum is 94 and a shut-in: losing Cedric has just been devastating for her.
Great discussion & exchange here, as usual. On the positive side, I did LOVE the talk about famous t.v. & movie horses. FURY and MY FRIEND FLICKA were my absolute favourite shows as a little girl. I recently bought some of the FURY shows (on DVD) and when I play one, I go right back in time to little horse-crazed me. For those interested, there are a few of the original Roy Rogers up on NETFLIX.
I have a question. When an Australian horse dies and my friend Bronwen Healy posts about it, she posts “Vale (horse’s name).” What does “vale” refer to? Is it “vale of tears” or ….? And is that the commonly used term in Australia? (I’m asking because I’ve asked Broni a number of times but when she responds, she always forgets to answer! And, we have lost 2 Canadian champions in a relatively short time: Nipissing (winner of 2013 Woodbine Oaks) and Strait of Dover (winner of the 2012 Queen’s Plate. I want to do something on them for THE VAULT and would like to title it VALE Nipissing and Strait of Dover. But I don’t want to use the term if I don’t understand it……)
Hugs to all
Donna R
“Vale” is Latin for “farewell” (as in a “valedictory” address, which is a farewell to the graduating class).

Abilgail, I am so sorry your mum lost her cat, her true companion. Nice to read your post!!

Cyberspace Atwitter With ”Talamo Takeover” At Del Mar
Joe Talamo is a fine, young race rider. Joe Talamo is also – being young and sharp – very attuned to all things digital, like Twitter and Facebook and Instagram, the things that fill up the new world of cyberspace.
So who better, then, to take on – and “takeover” – an assignment at Del Mar to rock its world for a day on-line in the world of Social Media.
Remember this one, hash tag hipsters — #TalamoTakeover.
On Thursday (8/8) Del Mar will, in effect, hand the wheel over to Talamo as he spends his day filling the track’s Twitter account with his daily doings – large and small, indoors and out, old and new – all while going through a day-in-the-life of a highly successful Thoroughbred jockey at the highly competitive Del Mar meeting.

Sad news from California. A long-time lover of horses and advocate for them, has left us. I work at the CHRB and have known Kirk for several years. A great loss for all. Our Zenyatta’s owner Jerry Moss served on the board for many years. The following was written by the board’s public relations director, Mike Marten:
Kirk E. Breed, executive director of the California Horse Racing Board since February 26, 2008, passed away Wednesday in a Sacramento hospital at the age of 73 after a brave battle against cancer. Mr. Breed continued overseeing CHRB operations throughout his long illness. Assistant Executive Director Jacqueline Wagner will oversee the daily operations of the CHRB until an executive director is named.
CHRB Chairman David Israel issued the following statement: “The members of the Board lost a beloved colleague and friend. In his years as executive director, Kirk Breed provided invaluable guidance and counsel to everyone who served on the Board. No one was more dedicated to assuring the welfare of the horse, the well-being of the participants and the integrity of the sport than Kirk. He will be missed, and all of us express our heartfelt condolences to Mary Ann and the entire Breed family.”
A more complete announcement will be issued Thursday.
It is a sad day at work today.

I am so sorry to read this. Condolences to the Mr. Breed’s family and friends.

Lynn,
So sorry to hear this sad news – especially from someone who knew Mr. Breed and had worked closely with him. Condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. You might want to copy and paste this on the blog post that comes up if you click on “Newer” at the bottom of this page. There have been two “active” blog posts which has been confusing to the max, but most peeps have migrated over to the other one.

I will check it out. Why the migration? Feel free to answer off the list kiralyi@prodigy.net

Sad occasion, indeed. Under different circumstances would always be glad to hear from someone who has knowledge of the inner workings of the CHRB.

St Nicholas Abbey Remains in Good Form
By Claire Novak, The Blood-Horse Updated: Friday, August 9, 2013 3:20 PM
Multiple group/grade I winner St Nicholas Abbey remains in good form at Fethard Equine Hospital and recently had his fiberglass cast replaced, the latest update from owner Coolmore Stud said Aug. 9.
The 6-year-old son of Montjeu underwent two major operations—one for a life-threatening fracture and one after colicking due to caecal shutdown—after injuring his pastern on trainer Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle gallops July 23. He had surgery on the fracture July 24 at Fethard and underwent an operation for the colic issue two days later.

I hope my question is not too late, and isn’t taken in the wrong way. I remember an interview with one of the vets for Zenyatta while she was racing, and in that interview, she said that Zenny loved the game, and the people so much, that retiring from racing was going to be the hardest change for her. I noticed that the first group of mares she was with, one seemed to follow her every where, sort of picking on her; I was so glad that she was taken away from her. Zenny seemed to be always looking out over the fence, always for human contact. Except for Tasty, the only other horses she seems to enjoy, are her babies, but she continues to want more human contact then most. Is this true about her? Has there been special arrangements made to address her mental happiness and needs? As we all know, her career and relationship with people was far from the norm for a race horse. She is so loving, and has such a special relationship with people; I just always wondered how these things were handled, but at the same time it is a working farm with many horses. I know she is loved by all, but it is a nagging question I have had. Thank-you, if you choose to answer this; I hope you do!!
sue and tony
Roberta, what a great question! We hope someone at LE answers it because we, too, have wondered how much human contact Zenny gets on a regular basis. She loves people and surely the Mosses and her peeps at LE do the best they can to keep her engaged with humans. Ann specifically seems to understand Zenny and they have a very close relationship. It seems as if they would make sure her desires were met…but an official response would be great.

Love it!

Will Zenyatts’s first foal be sold at the Yearling Sales this fall & if so will that be at Lexington?
Thanks.

Dear Zenyatta Thank you for the card with you and the boys. I am so happy for your new career. You always look so happy and healthy. I think when your foals race it will be You who is more important than the sire. I am so glad that Mr. and Mrs. Moss are giving you this wonderful life. I think having foals and motherhood is so good for you. Every foal you have is more of You to spread throughout the horse world. My new 5th Grade class will know all about you and your foals. Cozmic One’s picture is on the front of my desk. He looks just like you : ) I am getting a Smartboard so I can really enlarge all of your videos.
I Love You and Thank You again. Sending you and the Boys many Hugs and Kisses’ Shari XXXXOOOO

I have two questions for Ask the Experts: When will Cosmic One leave Lane’s End for his pre-racing training? And where will he be schooled?
Could you talk about the differences (or similarities) of temperament between Cozzy and Z13? Do they have very dissimilar personalities? What are they like? Does either colt have traits you associate with Zenyatta?
Thanks for taking time to give this interesting info to Zenyatta’s many fans!

Since they’re both there at Lane’s End, has there been any talk about breeding Zenyatta to Curlin?
