Breeders’ Cup Weekend Recap

Zenyatta, Ann and the Breeders’ Cup Sports and Racing Excellence Award.

Last weekend was the 10th anniversary of Zenyatta’s 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic victory, and we were at Lane’s End Farm to celebrate with The Queen herself.

Zenyatta was delighted to receive her Sports and Racing Elegance Award. Thank you Breeder’s Cup and all her fans for  supporting and honoring her in such a beautiful way! She thoroughly enjoyed every moment!

      Dear Sheena,

      I remember well this tragic day. It is one of those dates that you remember exactly where you were when the news broke. I was in ninth grade General Science class — truly an awful day followed by darkness and much sadness. It was also on Friday in ’63.

      Thank you for remembering our national tragedy, my friend. In addition to our country, I think much of the world mourned.

    I wonder what our country and the world would be like had he lived. So sad. Everytime I hear Hail To The Chief and see Air Force One, I think of him.

    Dear Sheena and My Z Family:

    Looks like the horse that came to the farm in September had Equine B Virus and Strangles. Angela texted me today. She said quarantine could last well into February. The problem is there are so many horses in the barn that when some horses get sick, they usually recover in about two weeks. In that time more horses are infected and on and on it goes. So I won’t be able to see my boy for a long while. Your prayers for the horses and Angela are so appreciated. Love all of you. Hugs, JB, LM and all the Sweeties

    This is what’s happening on the farm. Please keep praying. Thanks. Love and Hugs, JB

    Source: Rhode Island State Veterinarian
    Number Confirmed: 1;
    Number Exposed: 47;
    Clinical Signs: Coughing, Fever, Nasal Discharge, Lymphadenopathy; Horse Status: Affected And Alive; Vaccination Status: Status Unknown;
    Notes: A 40+ horse boarding facility in Providence County, RI began experiencing mild respiratory disease in mid-September. Signs were mild fever, nasal discharge and cough. There are several attending veterinarians for the stable and one was consulted. This veterinarian obtained nasopharyngeal samples from 3 horses and submitted them for a respiratory panel where Equine Rhinovirus-B was discovered in 2 horses and Streptococcus equi zooepidemicus in all three. The farm owner separated the sick horses from well ones until the sick ones were clinically normal for greater than a week (all horses had temps monitored twice daily). Upon reintroducing the horses that were formerly showing signs, the well horses began showing similar signs with some also experiencing lymphadenitis and lymphadenopathy. To date approximately 26 horses have experienced some respiratory signs and 21 have not. A second veterinarian examined a single horse with the aforementioned signs and she obtained a nasopharyngeal sample that was qPCR positive for EHV-4 and Streptococcus equi equi. Upon this diagnosis the state veterinarian issued an order of quarantine. The owner had been maintaining strict biosecurity prior to the new diagnosis but two horses left the property to go to another boarding facility in the same town. There was no quarantine in place when they moved. There is no known disease at that farm and those horses moved about 3 weeks prior to the diagnosis of S. equ and EHV-4. ;

      Dear Dee in the Hudson Valley and Z Fans:

      Dee, thank you for posting this article here. One of the Z’sters emailed a similar article on this new idea.

      Hope they make it a coalition made up of all race tracks in America. All the same rules for stewards and vets regarding drugs, use of whips, fines and suspensions depending on the infraction, reasons for scratches, disqualifications, etc. It would better protect the welfare of all horses and all jockeys.

      Horses and riders are even more at risk at the lower level, small claiming tracks and a universal coalition would assure more help for them. All horses and riders, even those that are not talented Stakes racers and riders, deserve the same protection from injury and worse. Love and Hugs, JB

    So sad to hear about Mr. Fink. Same goes for Shattering and Tamleek May they all rest in peace. Also very encouraging to read about the new coalition being formed to protect the horses. From the sound of it Zellda did well on her first workout. I don’t know if 36.40 is a good time or not, but according to information I found online it would appear that she was still full of run at the end and went willingly. Could someone tell me if that was a good time or not?
