Happy Wednesday!
As most of you know, we went to Florida at the beginning of the month to check in with Coz who has been at Mayberry Farm in Ocala for two months now. Jeanne Mayberry established the farm in 2000 and now runs it with the help of her daughters Summer and April. Today they are teaching Cozmic One the skills and routine that Zenyatta learned in 2005.
In this video from our visit you’ll see Ann, Jerry and John Shirreffs observe Coz’s morning from stall time right through to his post workout bath. Video and photos by Tyler Matson and Kyle Acebo.
We look forward to interviewing Jeanne about the process of breaking yearlings and her experience throughout the years. And in the next few weeks, the staff at Mayberry Farm will be answering questions from the fans in our Mayberry Farm Edition of Ask The Experts. Submit your questions below!
Happy Thanksgiving!
-Team Z

Dear Max Diolch yn Calon Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving and catch a few bargains today. Wow, our boy is getting very famous!I’d give Mr Beauty Pageant a wide berth and stick to Ruby Emerald, would love to see that race. Am glad the weather over here is mild after yet another haircut! I,m not sure the treat em’ mean keep em’ keen approach to Foxy will work somehow. Did you hear about the 5 wolveswho escaped from Colchester Zoo? 2 were tranquillised and 3 were shot and killed (sad) Paul Lister of MFI fame is determined to reintroduce them on his 23,000 acre estate in Sutherland.Have a great St Andrew,s day Hugs Sheena Am worried about St Nick!
Max
Sheena. Got my new iPad without too much hassle. Having cake for St. A Day.
Did google search on the wolves. Sad end for the 3. These must be European wolves, not those huge ones from Alberta?
Moosie is heading to Sandown. I would love to see him race.
Hovis is possibly not so secretly in love with Z, and maybe Foxy knows this? No filly or mare can compete with Z. Everyone loves her.
shirleeinindy
What a treat to find the photos and video of Coz. He is such a big boy now. Still has mom’s ears, thank goodness. What a lovely Thanksgiving gift to all of us from Ann, Jerry, John and all the Z team. Thank you so much.
Also, the Clark is coming up at Churchill. Lots of talent in the race and it should be very interesting. Pulling for the Dude.
Max
Shirlee. The Dude nearly had it, but that grand ole chestnut put his nose in front. WTC is a horse to watch as a 4 year old, if he races. He’s huge and a late developer. Like that big blaze too.
Ann NC
OMG!
I just came out of my self-induced turkey coma and read the race results.
I am very proud of WTC! I am celebrating with more pie and whipped cream on top, not a dollop, but a big ole white blaze portion!
Wow!
shirleeinindy
Max, Lets pull for Groupie Doll in the Cigar! I think this will be her last race. Thank goodness she was purchased by someone who seems to be a good owner.
Seems to be time for the Dude to go home to the farm or join Lava Man in his second career.
Maybe Muchie can be older HOY!
Max
Shirlee. I’m hoping for Groupie Doll for sure. She’s exceptional. It would be nice for Muchie to get an award, even better if he can race again next year. He’s still young and another late bloomer.

One-track thinking absorbs energy and hides good ideas like thick fog. People want to think for themselves, and they should. A good thinker seeks input from sources that benefit what he is trying to accomplish. His ear is turned to the sound of something that will help. But be aware that not everyone is open in this way. Some people throw up guards against the truth if it goes against what they want to believe. They hotly protest that they know as much as anyone else, which may be true-but on different subjects.
Remember that if what you offer rings of or looks like truth, know that it may not be well received. The market is not flooded with takers for truth. But be diligent: some will be open to your help even though they may not be beating down your door.
Everyone is ignorant-but on different subjects.

You, know, Hovis, that in that particular picture this week, your blanket has a distinct pink cast in the light. But we know you won’t mind….very much……..we won’t tell the girls. Hugs to you and Mum. And thank you, Max, as usual.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Kathy I always think for myself and don’t follow the crowd! Hugs to you and kisses for the Pups. Sheena
Max
Sheena. Moosie is also an independent thinker. No one dictates to the Moosester.
Kathy

Dear Max Glad you got your ipad. Moose has been busy tweeting today, asking Mick Fitz to come and see him being saddled up and to send Alice down to the start. Someone asked if Nigel was going to wear cheekpieces for his sprint at the start! He’s got 2,500 followers now.Enjoy your cake tomorrow, is also Winston Churchill’s birthday.Am hearing of a police helicopter crash in Glasgow, it crashed into a pub busy on a Friday night no confirmation of injuries or deaths yet.busy part of the city near the Clyde.news is coming in as I write it’s 11 23pm over here, can see the copter embedded in the roof would be surprised if anyone in there is alive.will have more news tomorrow Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Very sad news from Scotland on eve of St. Andrews. Hoping that there are few injuries and no deaths. I see that Dave is being criticized for missing his own St Andrew celebration to head off to an EU meeting. Isn’t it time for Steve to come home?
Still think that Nigel needs to hire a timber wolf to help out with the race start.
Marshall (NC broad)
Prayers for all victims of the helicopter crash in Glasgow and also for their families. Life is unpredictable and brief.
Dear Max,
Are you having a birthday today? If so, have a very Happy Birthday! Hope your day was just what you like. Best Wishes for many more healthy, wonderful birthdays to come! Lots of Hugs
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Yes, very sad indeed Dave doesn’t care much for Scotland or Wales We celts must stick together. The last time I heard Steve was due to come home soon he’ll be fluent in dutch by the time he gets back. Am sure Moose could handle a wolf with ease!! hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Yes, you might be right. Moose could stare down a wolf. Watch out for those hooves too. LOL!
sheena.davies(wales)
Sorry forgot to put Max is nearly midnight now bed for me goodnight Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Enjoy your rest. Dave’s a Celt himself but may have gone English.
Funny that you should have mentioned Churchill. I have read almost every book written on him as he was a maverick and a hero. Reading about WWII is one of my hobbies. Also went many times to visit Blenheim Palace where he was born. He had an American mother as you know.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max Am still here listening to the news, Alex Salmond has said there are bound to be fatalities.2 police officers and a civilian pilot in the helicopter, it’s a miracle there wasn’t an explosion.Yes ,I knew about Sir Winston’s mother Jennie Jerome a great beauty. Keeping those involved in the crash in my thoughts and prayers tonight.Hugs Sheena

I kept watching this video of Coz! Everything about it is wonderful to my eyes! love, love, love! Ann, give more kisses from me too!
Coz is a young gorgeous son of Zenyatta for sure with a some of Bernadini !
Hi all Zsters, it has been quite some time since I wrote about Sir and our other older horses. Sir is doing better though some said he had been cranky, after one volunteer had said he either had a bad slip or fell. He was do for a chiropractor so I met out there to help assist with another volunteer. Whew, you could tell when she worked at certain spots but over all, he was a real good boy. He never hides his feelings, if he has his ears back you know he does not want to be bothered. Yet, he can be affectionate with me when I have been there and some others. I played a game with him the other day as he smelled some carrot pieces in my pocket. I said Sir come with me and I began to walk out to his large pasture and he followed me like a puppy dog and caught up. I talked to him and gave a couple of carrot pieces and turned and moved on. He kept following stopping a moment or so to smell on the ground and caught up with me again. I think he enjoyed the special attention and excercise as well. It has been cold in Wi. and his arthritis is acting up. I have arthritis and it is far better for me to be moving than sitting too long.
Wednesday a couple of men from Center Valley came to use the skid loader and carry all the poop & debris away. These were new fellas, not the gentleman that had done it since inception of the Sanctuary. One left a gate open by mistake and all three, Fancy, Jo and Frito escaped and had a wonderful adventure. It could have been disasterous running across Hwy D but they made it across and kept running up the hills as one of the guys stated. Sir, meanwhile was at his wits end as he paced and attempted to run his fence lines to see where they were. All turned out fine as I heard they came back very willing. As Liz who had called me stated they were a bit tired but in terrific spirits and Sir was happy to see them. Imagine, 32, 30 and 27 year olds ran about on an adventure and uninjured! Thank God.
I am envious..I need an adventure! (Like a sudden phone call and running to Kentucky to see Zenyatta!)
All of a sudden, whether the cold weather has anything to do with it, we have lost our Mon. a.m. volunteer and our Fri. evening volunteers who have been with us a good year. It is sad to see such wonderful volunteers go and now we have to step up once again to fill in more time frames. I am praying word continues to get out and we find additional volunteers because our program otherwise could be in trouble.
I believe I am the second oldest person in the program and the oldest just trains the prospective volunteers. We need more younger blood! If I did not have physical issues I would be there whenever I could to help out. These horses are so worth it.
Mia, the german sheperd has become the biggest baby since all the care and recovery of surgery. My son, the actual owner, says “geez, I thought I bought a german sheperd to have people think she was protective, when all she wants is to be petted, and whines if one is not around”. hah hah Oh well! gramma spoils!
I am thankful for all of you, for Zenyatta in my life and all her connections and thankful for the contentment I have knowing I have friends and family nearby. (a little late for Thanksgiving Day)
hugs to all, Sally B

Dear Sally B:
So happy to know that Mia is doing well and also that Sir is enjoying his treats and his time with you.
Wow, glad that little adventure turned out so well. I bet it’s something they will “tell” all their buddies about; the “great highway adventure”. Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Sally B.,
Thanks for the update on Sir and Company! I am so glad that the escapees returned home safely after their adventure. That was really scary! Sure hope that more volunteers will sign on soon, too. Best Wishes!
Happy that Mia is doing well, also. Fancies herself a pampered pooch/lap dog, does she? LOL
It’s all good!! Keep on spoiling her, grandma! Lots of Hugs
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Ditto from me Sally – Marshall said it all so well – no need to repeat, but please know I join the others in sending our best to you and all of your critters :-)

Think long and hard before you give control of your life to something or someone. Never having to think for yourself and take care of yourself does not mean you are free from responsibility. The only thing it does mean is that you have fewer choices over which you have control.
Now is the time to think about controlling the choices in your life. It’s very easy easy to give up control over many parts of our lives if we don’t take care and pay attention to what is happening. There are enough things in our lives that dominate us without giving society and government control over life itself.
Consider the mess that things are in and stop looking for ease and freedom from responsibility. Rev up your thinking, doing, and voting. Let the world know you have a right to have control over your own life, to make choices about your own life. When you do this, your self-respect will become stronger. Never violate the sacredness of respect.
When we are poor we will tell you of it.

Dear Max Sad St Andrew’s Day for our Scots neighbours,8 fatalities and 14 seriously injured, rescue and recovery still on-going.Will take a while to find out the cause of the crash.RIP hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Very strange and very sad. It leaves one distressed for those involved on a day which should be festive for all Scots. I read your comments elsewhere about your worries. Don’t worry about losing control or anything else because we never know when the game will be over. Horses although they like their routine live in the moment. Carpe diem, my friend, carpe diem.

Dear Sheena and Max:
So sorry about the crash in Scotland. Prayers for the victims and their families.
Max, you are so right; live life every day to the fullest.
Love and Hugs, JB

JudyB. How’s it going for you and Miss Lola in your new digs? Hope that PC and his lady friends had a good Thanksgiving with lots of horsey treats.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Thank you for thinking of me. We had an unexpected ER visit for my Brother-In-Law in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, the day before Thanksgiving. He is doing better and everyone gathered at my nephews for Turkey Day. My sister, brother-in-law and I were a sorry looking lot; just need to catch up on our sleep and we’ll be fine.
Lola Mae and I are very settled in our new digs. Feels comfortable and like home. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a very Happy Birthday to you (can’t remember the exact date).
Haven’t seen Charlie for two weeks, but have been in touch with Angela. Seems my desire to be more hands on hit a wall. I had the most sever attack of Asthma that I’ve had in quite a while after mucking out and grooming the horses. Took the inhaler and after a couple of days was able to breath more normally. I am disappointed but not surprised; was hoping it wouldn’t trigger. I’ll just have to stick to being the carrot lady. BTW, Angela has asked me to stop hand feeding the horses for a while, as she said they are getting a bit nippy. So I will just be leaving the treats in their feed buckets. Hoping to see Charlie on Wednesday. Was set to go this week, but life as you said in an earlier post, has a way of detouring the best made plans. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Sorry to hear about your brother in law and you. Hope that you are both feeling better soon. Visiting the horses rather than working is also a very good thing to do. They need that kind of social attention. PC especially needs practice time with his styling, and you can be his model. Watch your hat and scarf.
Ann NC
Dear JB,
Hope your brother in la is better.
Hugs!
Ann NC
Am sorry, B in Law.

So sorry to hear this Sheena. I haven’t had the news on for the past couple of days so had only your report. My dad was born in a town near Glasgow so it is a special place for our family.
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Sheena, My sympathies go out to the families that lost their loved ones and for those who are worried about their injured. Was this a multi car crash or were passengers on a bus? Either way, so sad.
hugs Sally B

Dear Flat Out
So hope we see you again next Year……………………………………….
Max
Peggy. Flat Out is 7 and if ever there was an argument to keep a horse in racing if he or she is healthy and can do it, this is it. What a win!
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
Wasn’t he great. Just love to see horses like him and Wise Dan
I like Flat Out’s family so much too.
Congrats to Flatter and Grand PaPa Indy too.
Max
Peggy. Flat Out is a wonderful warrior. He knows just when to turn it on. Yes, that wide run today reminded me of Danny Boy.
There is another Indy on the horizon for the KD – Honor Code. He just won the Remsen. Dam sire is Storm Cat. Owner is Lane’s End. This is a horse to watch.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
Just love to see these older horses with these huge runs. Flat Out so much reminded me of Dan today.. Was so glad to see Orfevre run as long as he did too. So hope they still will let us see him race one more time on Dec 22.
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
So happy for Flat Out!!
hugs Sally B
Janet Newman
I would like to see Flat Out standing at stud,
He proved what a durable horse he is and earned over 3 million the hard way.
I read there is some negotiations to stand him, but that was before the Cigar win.
If he races and that would be great. He is a true warrior.
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Dear Sandy (Ohio) My goodness you had dogs and cats all wishing you a Happy Birthday. That was special for your big day!!
Although I am late, I still wanted to wish you a Wonderful Birthday and many more happy and healthy ones.

Oh, wow. I guess one never knows whether you have another day or not. To think just at the wrong place at the wrong time. How sad!!! I have to remind myself to make everyday meaningful.
I think I better start organizing my dresser again and get rid of any old holey socks or under garments. I am serious. I think it would embarass me for someone else to find these things, even though I would no longer be here.
hugs to you, Sally B

Max, Hovis sure entertains me!! “Hey Hovis, you are mucho, you can wear pink and get away with it!! What is Hovis going to try next with Foxy. I am happy to have read Hovis this week and wish I could read everyone. How does one order Hovis’s book?
I promise it won’t be a stocking stuffer, it will be for me!
hugs to you, keep them coming Max, Sally B

Sally. You can order his books from Bransby Horses website. Hovis gives all of his profits to them for horse rescue. I bought both books and intend to read them at Christmas. Service is very good from the UK.
