Happy Monday!
Zenyatta, 13Z and Cozmic One were visited by Jerry and Dottie this weekend. It was a particularly special visit because they were there to see Coz off as he departed Lane’s End for Mayberry Farm in Florida. At Mayberry he’ll follow in his mom’s footsteps and focus on his new routine—learning to be a racehorse. Alys captured video of his departure for the fans.
The team spent time with Zenyatta, who is looking great and in foal to War Front. They also said hi to 13Z, who’s having a blast this fall with his buddies.
We’d like to thank Lane’s End for all of the time, enery, and love that they have put into Coz. For that, we are very grateful.
Enjoy!

Dear Peggy(N) South Georgia,
I Pray to our Almighty Father that you are feeling better about Big O and the race today. I don’t know where to begin but just want you to know that I know exactly how you feel and want you to know it gets better, not today, not tomorrow, but it will get better. Just let yourself feel all you want to feel and over time, I promise you, you will be feeling a whole lot better, Not that you don’t still feel the old tinge of anger anytime you allow yourself to think of your baby but you come to accept it and just pray that he is happy where ever he is and that his son’s and daughters will make him Proud.
It took me a long, long time to get over big Brown losing the triple crown bid and my pain was compounded when people forgot that he was a 2 time champion prior to that ill fated day and a pretty good one at that. His winning the Haskel invitational and having to dig really deep to beat pesky coolcolman was a little redemption for me because it showed he had the heart of a champion and life was almost good again. They still don’t give him the respect he deserves but I pray that God will Bless his kids and make it all right.
Now the Queen’s loss to Blame was another matter altogether, I was mad at God,!, I didn’t understand it, I didn’t want to understand it and it took me forever to watch the video after the fact since I was too nervous to watch the live race. When she was retired and moved to kentucky, I was devastated because I knew she did not have another opportunity to shut her critics up.!. so, my dear, I understand, Big O moving to Asia makes it all the more painful for you knowing his racing days are over and how would you keep up with what he is doing?, most owners are not like the Mosses who knowing how much the Queen was loved set up the different ways for us to be connected with her.
You know what, it is well, we will keep praying for the big fella to do good at what ever life presents and have a good life where ever life takes him and to know that he is dearly loved. I know I am beginning not to make sense but pray that this is of some comfort to you

Zenyatta the Good Queen has had such a positive influence on so many lives. Mine in particular. When health and family worries weighed me down there was always Z to think of and cheer for and love. Following her career, retirement and motherhood has been a constant for me during good times and bad. Discovering all the dear people that share that love of the greatest rachorse of my time (forgive me Secretariat) gladdens each day. Thanks to Jerry and Ann Moss and the great people at Lane’s End.

I was just thinking that we hadn’t heard from you lately Carol. So sorry for the angst you must be going through but glad to hear that your Hubby is on the mend and hopefully on the way home. Hugs!

Carol–so sorry you and hubby are going through such an ordeal. Hospital stays are the worst ever. We had 5 of them last year, and every time there was a parallel crisis at home: plumbing problems, house flooding, etc. I can truly sympathize with both of you.
Prayers for healing and comfort along with the usual hugs.

Happy birthday, Judy Maass (rhymes with Moss) Gadwood! Here’s a repeat of your poem from 2011. Hope you have a wonderful day and a wonderful year ahead!
A Birthday Poem for Judy Maass Gadwood (JAG)
(October 8, 2011)
Our dear Judy Gadwood, nee Maass,
Finds Zenyatta a horse to treasure–
Her love for Z has no measure
And to spend time on Z’s site
Is for her such a pleasure
That she can’t stay away,
Try as she might.
She’ll even sneak minutes
Out of sight of the boss
On a work day
For Zenyatta.com–
For her soul
It’s a healing balm
Without limits.
But before there was Z,
There was another “hoss,”
A superstar
Who brought fans from afar.
His attendants had found
That when in his stall
He dearly loved to pound
Anything steel
Right into the ground—
Now that should reveal
The name
Known to all
To which he brought
Even more fame—
Yes, ’twas John Henry,
Another champion he!
And Judy was soon in his thrall.
He won his first Arlington Mile
Beating The Bart,
And that was the start
Of a career
That year after year
Brought Judy many a smile—
And she in turn gave him her heart.
To this day his name
Encircles her wrist
On a bracelet she wears
As if keeping a tryst
With him whom she so admired.
And when John Henry retired
To Kentucky Horse Park,
Judy was lucky enough
To visit him more than once–
For sure he had no better pal
Than this gal from SoCal.
And she was blessed
To give him a final kiss
And tell him goodbye
As it came his turn to die
–on her birthday, no less.
Oh, how he would be missed!
But before he departed
To race cross the sky,
His heart to her alone spoke
What no other could hear.
Soul to soul he imparted,
“My time now is near,
My race has been run,
My work here is done.
But have no fear—
Though she is still young,
Another already has come
That you’ll love
As you have loved me,
Just wait patiently
And you’ll see.
From above
To her my spirit I’ll send,
To her my soul I’ll lend,
And her with my fire
I’ll inspire
To be a great filly and mare.
Of her I’ll take good care
So no matter how fast
She flies round the track
And charges from last
To be first at the wire,
She’ll always come back
Safe and sound…”
Then he was gone.
Judy cried many a tear
When she lost her old friend,
And was bound to fear
That her sadness would never end.
But she at last found relief
From that deep grief
When she finally met
The promised Zenyatta—
To her, a gift of new-found joy
From her beloved boy.
That first encounter with Z
Was some three years ago–
Z’s now relaxing in Kentuck’
And preparing to be a mother,
So Judy now cheers for Mo,
Black Caviar, the sweet Blind Luck,
And today certainly Mr. Commons.
And since in this world of saints and sinners,
It’s true
That her whole life through
Judy has been on the side of the good,
We would, if we could,
Make all of her wagers winners.
And another wish we would grant her:
These days
She fervently prays
That the stars may align
For March 9
To be the day that Z gives birth–
The same day that in ’75
John Henry first set hoof on earth.
For her ’twould be a splendid sign
That to be alive
Is to be truly
In a circle never broken.
Meantime
Let our love for dear Judy
Be joyously spoken.
We say hoof, hoof, hoof-ray,
And may joy with you always stay!

Oh my gosh Zsters, we began the new fencing and removing of some old fencing at 9:30 ish a.m. Sunday to have Sir have a new and stronger fencing for his nice sized pasture. I was there earlier as I covered to feed and clean prior to the arrival. There were only 3 of us volunteers, two husbands and a strong son to drive Tposts, putting up the major fence & carrying other heavy stuff, but I did ask if we could borrow Cedar Valley Centers “mule”, which is a 4 wheel truckster to carry items and to keep the fencing stretched. Awesome!
We still needed to keep Sir separated from the other horses so we could not take down any fencing dividing them in the paddock. Holy Moley, Sirs new pasture was completed first and we closed the gate out to it, let him out from the goat pasture area. He stood there for quite some time, looking all over and grazed a bit. Then, while I was working on the other projects, I looked up, and there Sir was running around the whole big perimeter, not once, not twice but four times! He was so happy . He stopped, rested, then began to roll, rested a bit, then rolled and got up.
Sir was having the time of his life. He did run again later too!
We took down the old dividing fence in the paddock and had to get the other three in their stalls with doors closed. It took awhile to get down and I began to hear that they were getting restless. We also needed to put a dividing fence to the opposite end of the paddock leading to Sirs new big pasture. It was a stressful time to get this part completed. The three wanted out.
We let Fancy, Frito and Jo out and Fancy headed fast toward the way they always used to go, my heart stopped, so did my breathing, as he put on the breaks realizing there was a new fence. We had marked the fencing. He turned almost wild, as where do we go now, but he saw the big entrance to the goat pasture leading to through to the biggest part of the pasture and he ran with Frito and Jo following.
I felt so bad I had to watch Fancy so unsettled and I prayed no horse would get hurt. My arm got scrapted up by the door when opening Fancy’s stall door and he was out so fast, my arm was still on the door, but my body left his path. I love Fancy too, he is the oldest at age 32, still a great looking Arabian who usually is the most layed back horse one could ever be with.
I began to question why I volunteered to help because no way do I want any of the horses getting hurt. I did not sleep well when I left.
Good news, they have found their contentment. Monday volunteers said that and I saw it today. The only thing is Sir is favoring his left hind leg so his happy response to freedom I hope only gave him a pulled muscle. The experienced will watch him. Frito, I found this morning did try to push at the hefty fence out in Sirs pasture. I wonder what sign he is because he sure is stubborn!! He was the one who was destroying our wire fence last time! What a stinker!
Thank you for all your time, I tend to go long, but everything is looking really rosy right now for the horse sanctuary and the horses.
Peace and love, Sally B

Cool video – thanks Janet! I’m impressed with those huge barn doors that can apparently be closed as needed, but what’s up with the doors to the stalls? Looks like a fortress, and no way for the horse to get pets!
Terry Crow
The size of such a door and what it takes to open one was one of the key issues in the death of Alydar.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Terry, I just read about that! Incredible that “About five days before Alydar’s injury his original night watchman, Harold “Cowboy” Kipp, testified that he was at work on the farm when he was ordered to take Tuesday, November 13 off,” which was the day Alydar shattered his leg. An MIT professor testified that Alydar could not have done the damage himself, as the force needed was too great.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alydar
Marty R / Colorado
Thanks for this video, Janet. Tapit is impressive!! Sandy, I hadn’t noticed the stall doors so had to take a second look. My guess is that petting the stallions has to be controlled for safety reasons. Looks like those doors would definitely accomplish that. I kind of like the look of more openess, both for the horses and anyone walking past.

zenyatta and your babies and baby to be. i look at the writing in this blog and sometimes wonder who are these crazy people who talk amongst themselves about birthdays and what not and not about you, team z and the kids. some of these people need to go elsewhere and talk about their stuff. loved the look of COZ. he is going to be stunning. and thirteen z will be a knock out too. so happy for you zenyatta, to have dottie and jerry in your midst, bet you were happy. love to you an all of your family. joe & marsha

Marsha and Joe–
If you lingered here long enough, you would understand the “family” who has formed around Zenyatta and because of Zenyatta. If it were not for her, none of us would have met. We have become dear friends. We weep with each other; we rejoice with each other, We speak up for horses in danger. We care about each others’ pets and families. Zenyatta is retired from racing now. We love the updates on Zenny and her babies as they grow and mature. LE and Team Z. are so kind to provide the framework for our being here. But if the sole topic of conversation that is allowed should be confined to Zenyatta, we would have run out of superlatives long ago. Hugs to all.

I just read it too, and it breaks my heart. Dr. Hansen was upset about it, and didn’t think that he would be sold out of the country or he would have a clause in the contract for that not to happen, because he is a homebred. He said that the farm had a buy back clause, if his first year foals do very good. He is a very spirited horse; I pray he will be okay, and come home soon. It is heartbreaking news!!
I was trying to put he link, but forgot how; it was on a Bloodhorse alert.

Roberta, I left Ashford Stud a “Shame On You” post on their facebook page. I know it will mean nothing to them, but made me feel better.
