Happy Monday!
Zenyatta, 13Z and Cozmic One were visited by Jerry and Dottie this weekend. It was a particularly special visit because they were there to see Coz off as he departed Lane’s End for Mayberry Farm in Florida. At Mayberry he’ll follow in his mom’s footsteps and focus on his new routine—learning to be a racehorse. Alys captured video of his departure for the fans.
The team spent time with Zenyatta, who is looking great and in foal to War Front. They also said hi to 13Z, who’s having a blast this fall with his buddies.
We’d like to thank Lane’s End for all of the time, enery, and love that they have put into Coz. For that, we are very grateful.
Enjoy!

Galileo Filly Smashes European Record Price
By Myra Lewyn, The Blood-Horse Updated: Wednesday, October 9, 2013 2:57 PM
A Galileo full sister to 2012 Epsom Oaks (Eng-I) winner Was sold for 5 million guineas ($8,443,575 in United States funds) Oct. 9 out of Book 1 at the Tattersalls October yearling sale in Newmarket, smashing the European record price for an auction yearling set the previous day at the sale.
Bidding on behalf of Sheikh Joaan al Thani’s Al Shaqab Racing, Nicolas de Watrigant’s Mandore International outbid Coolmore’s John Magnier to acquire the regally-bred filly offered by breeder Lodge Park Stud. The Irish-bred is out of stakes-placed Alluring Park, by Green Desert.

What is the world record? Answer is:
Sid Fernando tweet
$13.1 million the world record for Seattle Dancer
Terry Crow
BGG-Didn’t The Green Monkey go for 16 million?
Eveline / Maryland.
Terry, that was in a 2 year old in training sale.
Terry Crow
Eveline-You mean that the buyers actually saw this horse run and still paid 16 million for him? A horse that never broke his maiden and had only three starts? What the heck did they see in him?
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
He ran a sub-10-second furlong. That’s wicked fast. He had a nice pedigree. And he looked great at the sale.
Really, though, the price was due to a bidding war between Coolmore and Darley interests. Darley’s probably glad they lost that one.
DebraZ
It scares me to see those huge prices. How can the horses live up to those expectations? At least the mares can be bred.
Terry Crow
DebraZ-You have good reason to be concerned. It is high yearling prices that contributed to the “Bluegrass Bubble” in the 80’s and directly led to the downfall of Calumet Farm.
DebraZ
I didn’t know that! But it makes economic sense that that might happen again. Shaking my head.

Dear BGG Sheikh Joaan Al Thani was determined after losing out yesterday. She’s a beautiful filly. A mare called Hazel Lavery , in foal to Frankel, is expected to shine at Goffs in November. Sometimes I feel these owners have more money than sense. Hugs Sheena

Sheena. I remember Hazel. She beat Noble Mission, Frankel’s brother, last year at Newbury. Good racer.

In a few short years various al-Thani family members from Qatar’s ruling family have won BC, Arc, and Melbourne Cup, among other races.
Max
But not the KD.
Terry Crow
Max-You know your history. The first KD victory by a foreign bred horse would be big news, indeed.
Terry Crow
I had a senior moment there. I think that Tomy Lee was a foreign bred.
DebraZ
Just had to check it out: there were 4 winners of the KD not foaled in the US: Omar Khayyam (GB) 1917, Tomy Lee (GB) 1959 and two from Canada, Northern Dancer and Sunny’s Halo.
Only kind of foreign, lol
Max
The two horses born outside of North America lived and trained in the US. Other than the Canadian horses, no foreign invader, i.e. born and trained elsewhere, has yet captured the KD.
Terry Crow
DebraZ–You are correct, of course. I had forgotten about Omar Khayyam, a little before my time, but not by much. I had seen the others you mentioned run in person. I did not consider the Canadian horses to be foreign due to our kinship with Canada, but of course they are. Max put it much better than I did. her facts are spot on and mine were not.
DebraZ
You and Max are right: it is all in the family.
Max
TC. As I recall, I always referred to non North American horses as not winning the KD, thereby including the Canadian horses. Secretariat was very close to Canada with his jockey and trainer, Ron Turcotte and Lucien Lauren, both being Canadian. Secretariat also won his first turf race at Woodbine, which was also his swan song. The ties between the US and Canada and their horses are like no other, the longest undefended border in the world. The Brits also have their last Triple Crown winner in Nijinsky, born in Canada, US owned, Irish trained. He lived his stallion and retirement days in Kentucky.
Terry Crow
For a while, the brits did not even consider American horses to be thoroughbreds. They passed something called the Jersey Act, which was in effect from 1912 to 1947. It was all about protecting the English breeders.

Am happy you are feeling better about things re Big O and your doc is a wise person. God is love and he wants you to live your life in fullness of Health.

Interesting video about Britain’s Princess Anne adopting a horse in need (rather than purchasing an expensive variety). The horse, Annie, is a Welsh Cob mare (not sure what that means exactly, but thought Sheena and others might enjoy this :-)

Joseph O’Brien sets new Irish record
Posted by: AAP+ Filled in: International Horse Racing | 10/10/2013 at 9:12am
Joseph O’Brien broke a 20-year old Irish record at Navan on Wednesday with the final leg of a treble bringing up his 117th winner of the season to consign the previous best set by Mick Kinane to the history books.
O’Brien, champion jockey last season with 87 winners, equalled the previous record of 115 which Kinane set in 1993, the year O’Brien was born, on his father Aidan’s Sardinia in the October Maiden.

Secretariat fans–you need to get the November issue of Equus magazine. It’s got a whole section on Big Red, what made him so great, and why he is still relevant. There is a discussion of his conformation and gait, with comparisons to other greats. Definitely worth a trip to your local newsstand or bookstore if you are not asubscriber.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks for the “heads up” LauraJ. Good to see you here. Trying to think if there is a large-enough bookstore left anywhere around here that might have the issue.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
I’ve seen Equus at Kroger, though not every issue. Tack shops usually carry horse magazines, if you’ve got one of those nearby. Also check Tractor Supply.

Good morning, just me wanting to jump start your day with God’s Blessings. Pray that the good Lord will met us all at our points of need, be it Healing, financial restoration, relationship mending, wisdom and direction. It is well always.

@Pati-I left this message on another page but, with the speed that we post messages here, it may be missed. I was irritated when the picture of the person riding Zen’s statue was posted. Thank you so much for your beautiful words and kindness. I second your feelings and send prayers and good wishes to all the Z’sters and Dumplings who are going through tough patches right now. You’re the best.
Especially hoping to hear from Ann in NC as she has not posted in a while. She has been helping her Mom who went through surgery a couple of weeks ago. Will keep you all in my prayers. Love and Hugs, JB

Judy-In between looking for that football salesman, I do email from time to time. Ann from NC is one of my favorites. I last heard from her on September 13. At that time, she said hat she would be off the blog for a few weeks as she was traveling to help her mother recover from a serious surgery. I hope she checks in with us soon.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
That’s about when I heard from Ann too. I just didn’t get the idea that she thought it was going to be THIS long. Have tried to locate her by phone with no luck. I join the others in hoping everything is OK with both her and her mom.

Thanks, Sandy. Now I’m worried.

Will 13z be kept or sold? What is his real name going to be?

Most likely he will be kept. The Mosses like to race their homebreds. He hasn’t got a registered name yet. It took them a year to name Cozmic One aka 12Z.
