Happy Friday!

For nearly three weeks now, Cozmic One has been able to call John Shirreffs’ barn at Belmont home. He’s settling into a relaxed training schedule, where he is permitted to learn and grow at his own pace.

We welcomed him off the truck from Ocala, FL at the end of March and met up with John and the crew at Barn 41 again yesterday. We hope you can share in our experience through the photos and videos below.

Enjoy!

Besides being a great Mom and role model for Princess what will Zenyatta do during her vacation? Will she be allowed to stay with LIS or will she be placed with other mares not in foal? Silly I know to worry about her happiness and contentment but as we all know Zenny is not just any mare. I wouldn’t want her to become bored and possibly do herself an injury. Also how do they keep her in good shape?

I am very interested in what Zenyatta will be doing during this year and who she will be with since she won’t be in foal. I think Team Z will be letting us know how she is and what she’ll be doing. Very good questions Vicki. I really wonder how they keep her in top shape.

Sheena. Disappointed that Estimate did not win. She’s a lot like Quevega, no prep races. She just does it. Hopefully she will race again.
I agee about the whipping. No need for excessive use.
Free the Moose! Power up Danny. Power up CDA, Chromie and all others who are sick. Reilly, hope all is well. Sir, good luck has to come your way.

Estimate really tried and gave it her all. Wish young Joseph would stop using the whip excessively (if at all) or maybe just show the horse the whip. Power Up Danny, CDA, Beholder, CC, Reilly, Sir and all who are ill or injured. Beast, Max is watching. TT, Max is waiting. Loose The Moose! Love and Hugs, JB

What do You Zsters think. If Keeneland does host the 2015 Breeders Cup.
Keeneland’s race meet is generally in October and ends at the end of the month.
The Breeders Cup is usually the first Friday and Saturday in November right?
Wonder if Keeneland will just extend its race meet a week or if the Breeder Cup will move back a weekend. If you look at the calendar you will know what I am talking about.
First weekend in November is the 6 & 7.
Wondering what you guys think. Although, maybe too soon to know.

They’ll have to apply for extra race dates from the state racing commission, I think. They’ll probably just extend their fall meet a week. This year the BC starts on October 31, so the whole thing doesn’t have to be in November. In any event, they’ll be cutting into Churchill Downs’s fall meet.

I read an article that says they can probably add about 25,000 temporary seats. That would put their capacity at about 65,000. That is considerably less than Churchill Downs or Santa Anita can hold.

LauraJ, With only that number of seats available, we had better start looking for tickets pretty early. Kinda wish they had given it to Churchill because of it being a bigger track and the experience it has with big events. The main thing is, I hope we have one of the wonderful Kentucky fall days. ‘Cause I have gotten awfully cold a time or two at Churchill.

    Suspensions at Ascot
Thoroughbred News 20 Jun 2014 | Ascot Racecourse
Joseph O’Brien has been banned for a total of nine days following two separate incidences with the whip on Thursday at Royal Ascot.
Following the Gold Cup, the stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Joseph O’Brien, the rider of the winner, Leading Light, from three furlongs out.
Having heard his evidence and after viewing a recording of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The stewards suspended O’Brien for seven days as follows: Thursday 3rd, Friday 4th, Saturday 5th, Sunday 6th, Monday 7th, Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th July 2014. Under rule (B)54, they also fined O’Brien £3,000.
The stewards also held an enquiry into the use of the whip by O’Brien on Carlo Bugatti (placed 7th) from two and a half furlongs out in the King George V Handicap.
Having heard his evidence and after viewing a recording of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. They suspended O’Brien for a further two days as follows: Thursday 10th and Monday 14th July 2014.

      Excerpt from article:
The stewards also noted that the Gold Cup winner, Leading Light, had interfered with Brown Panther (placed 4th), who then interfered with Estimate (placed 2nd), who then interfered with Missunited (placed 3rd) approaching the furlong market. After viewing a recording of the incident, they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved Leading Light’s position.

Dear Max.I recall when reading General Sir Jack Seely’s book about his warhorse “Warrior”,he wondered at the end what had allowed Warrior to possess such a great character and personality and he believed it was because he had (despite the destruction of the war) known kindness all his days. Here are some of his words…. “the soul of a horse is a great and loyal one, quite unspoiled by the chances and changes of human kind.Above all,it is a courageous soul, and affectionate soul. But let there be one cruel blow from a grown-up man and you have ruined the horse’s fine soul for ever.
It is my dream that those who read this book may vow never to beat a willing horse”

Max, I agree with you. Wish they would completely ban the whip. Or if it is used, maybe after the race the same amount of hits should be administered to the trainer and/or owner!

After the Breeders Cup win on Muchie, Gary Stevens said that he learned not to use the whip at all on him. That he was trying as hard as he could without it.

        • Max

          June 20, 2014 at 12:20 pm

          Shirlee. Very good suggestion.
Muchie like most first class racehorses knows what he is doing. Wise Dan also usually wins on a hand ride. In his last outing, he spent energy fighting Uncle Johnny who wanted him to stay behind. Dan knows best. Let Danny run.
Free the Moose. Power up Danny! Power up CDA, Chromie, and all others who are sick. Reilly, we are expecting a good report on you. Same for Sir.

    The Fugue breaks course record
    Brisnet Updated: June 19, 2014
A crowd of 40,459 was on hand Wednesday for day two of Royal Ascot, up from the 38,758 last year probably due in part to the participation of Treve in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes.
Three fillies entered against five males in the race but, instead of the French superstar schooling her rivals, Lord Lloyd-Webber’s The Fugue stepped up to win in thrilling style when breaking the Ascot 10-furlong course record in 2:01.90. The previous record of 2:02.52 was achieved by Cirrus des Aigles in the 2011 Champion Stakes.
“We did genuinely think that we were going to let her have a stroll round the park,” Lord Lloyd-Webber remarked. “Nobody believed that she would quite do this but it’s the best racing day in our whole racing career.”

    June 20 Cherokee Devotional

Everything is fresh and new on a June morning. Someone performed a miracle while we slept. The air was cleaned to crystal clarity, the rising sun glistens on every leaf and blade of grass. The hills are new green from spring rains and the horses that graze there are sleek and shiny. Such rewards, such a sa s dv, are for the early riser, the one who greets the day with thanksgiving and praise. Regardless of how many tag-alongs from yesterday threaten, they cannot break the spell of the beauty at hand. Another opportunity, another splendid day that is so oblivious to the schemes of man. To go with it, to rise with the morning mist, is to know the freedom and restoration in the soul of the American Indian.

To the Indian, words that are true sink deep into his heart where they remain; he never forgets them.

Thank you Lane’s End for all of the wonderful pictures of Zenyatta and her offspring. Hope to visit your farm some day. Just read that Chris McCarron, Tiznow’s jockey, is retiring from the riding academy located there in Lexington, KY. (Bloodhorse and Paulick Report articles)

Rosalind has minor cuts. Grabbed left front quarter. Otherwise minor.
Hope Keiren is alright too. Heard he was off mounts. Bad luck. Head up

Landaluce Educe posts that Rosalind is fine after her stumble at #RoyalAscot today.
“Her next goal is still the Belmont Oaks on July 5th.”

Sheena. I’m with Hovis. Those two manly equines were just exchanging horsey secrets. The ginger dude however looks tiny in comparison to Hovis. The ginger dude also looks a little like Chromie. Maybe Chromie’s gone to England on his hols?
Saw what you wrote about Rosalind. She’s okay?
The Queen’s horse came in second again today. I’m still disappointed over Estimate, but she ran a very good race.
Checked out the new photos of Lane’s End. Princess is big and beautiful like momma. Did not see Tasty.
Free the Moose! Power up Danny! Power up CDA, Chromie and all others who are sick.
Reilly, be a good boy for Marshall. You might get extra treats. Better days to Sir.
Beast, time to think about bed time. Tasty, looking for you. Where’s Tasty?

Did you ever see the show the jockeys? That
‘s how I got to see Joe Talimo in his rookie season. He was so cocky and full of himself the other jocks would ignore him. Mike nice as always tried to mentor him, but behind Mikes back Joe would talk bad about him. The other jocks would have none of it and told him when he had ridden as many winners as Mike then come talk to them, or if he ever got into the Hall of Fame. Not long after that Mike comes into the room and is sooo excited and says, just wait till you seethe horse I rode today!,,,I think it’s the best horse I ever rode. All the jocks started throwing dirty white towels and socks at Mike in fun cause they had all herd him say that before, but that was the day he rode Zenyatta for the first time . I love that

Thanks for sharing that story. I knew it was around then but did not know the play by play. Everything with Joe Talamo is different now. He is very respectful and hardworking and Mike and he are good friends. He is very respectful when he speaks about Mike.
