December at Lane’s End: Part 3

Cozmic One.
Cozmic One at Hidden Brook Farm.

The last stop on our December trip to Kentucky was Hidden Brook Farm. We were excited about this visit because Cozmic One had recently arrived, ready to embark on a new career.

Sergio de Sousa, partner and manager of the farm, showed us around. His daughter Isabela is training Coz for Retired Racehorse Project’s 2018 Thoroughbred Makeover and blogging about the process on Chronicle of the Horse. Read her first post here.

Follow De Sousa Stables on facebook for the latest updates.

Safe trip to all of the horses in Dubai. I worry about Forever Unbridled and hope she comes back home safely. Take care Biscuits and West Coast also. Will feel better when they are all back here in good healthy. Some of them seem to never be the same after that long trip.

My thoughts and prayers are with Jockey Pat Smullen and family after his cancer diagnosis.
Only Nicky Henderson will be open at Lambourn on Good Friday because of flooding in the area. The old NH spirit is alive and well!

    The Player Update for Tuesday:
Trainer Buff Bradley posted on Facebook: “Dr. McCauley seems to think at this moment
all is normal and he was pleased with his attitude and mentality to rest.
All the vets and vet techs love him. He has a big bag of mints that they’re feeding him.”

Don’t know if you all have seen it but you can order Coz gear. Info on the de Sousa facebook page. Tee shirt is pretty tempting. Wish we could get Ziconic gear. Would love a tee with his pic and The Red Prince on it.

Dear Sheena, Hi, had a question to ask if you know. I was listening to HRRN this morning. Didn’t hear all the talk but they were talking about Que Card. I had lost track of him. Is he retired now? He’s a pretty neat horse. They were just talking about him and laughing. They said in one of his races they were cheering him. They said he was just loving it. Looking like yeah I’m King Horse. Too Cute.

Dear Peggy.Cue Card’s final race is at Sandown on the april 28th.A loto us have wanted the owner/trainer to retire him ahile now.I know Paddy his jockey will look after him in the race he will live on his trainer’s farm then as a hack and most probably do some hunting. He is hugely popular over here.He loves all the attention as most champions do.

Hi Ya’ll~Here’s a book I just saw. Haven’t read it, but it sounds like one that many would appreciate:

One Hundred and Four Horses: A Memoir of Farm and Family, Africa and Exile

Follow the true story of Pat and Mandy Retzlaff, who risked their lives to shelter the horses left behind by those fleeing Mugabe in early 2000s Zimbabwe. An inspiring story that “showcases the seemingly small but deeply significant heroism of doing the right thing” (Booklist).
