December at Lane’s End: Part 3

The last stop on our December trip to Kentucky was Hidden Brook Farm. We were excited about this visit because Cozmic One had recently arrived, ready to embark on a new career.

Sergio de Sousa, partner and manager of the farm, showed us around. His daughter Isabela is training Coz for Retired Racehorse Project’s 2018 Thoroughbred Makeover and blogging about the process on Chronicle of the Horse. Read her first post here.

    To Z-13 Rulz.

    You seem so knowledgeable about horses. Do you know enough about a Suspensory injury to discuss it. Have just fallen in love with “Fly So HIgh” the Granddaughter of my favorite horse “Quiet American”. After I heard she does have an injury I have been so worried.

      Hello Peggy,

      I can discuss it at a high level.

      Basically you have to realize that from a skeletal standpoint horses are running on their fingertips. What propels them are the tendons, and ligaments that make up the suspensory system in the lower leg. Like a giant rubber band.

      If you look at a horses leg, the front inch is bone and then the back is tendon and ligament.

      Reading the Blood Horse article they are saying that Fly So High has a small tear in her upper suspensory. So one of those tendons or ligaments has a small tear in it; think of it like a small hole in a rubber band. This compromises the integrity of that suspensory system and if those suspensory tear completely, then you run the risk of a catastrophic bone injury.

      The injury she has is not life threatening, but it could be career ending. A race horse runs on that system of rubber bands in those slim lower limbs and that system has to be flawless in order to not only race safely but also at maximum ability. They are key in a horse’s propulsion. Recovery to peak racing fitness is never a guarantee with these sorts of injuries, even with all the treatments in the world.

      It should not cause laminitis, since it sounds like she’s sound and carrying her weight balanced on all four limbs, which means that she can go on to a career as a broodmare, no problem.

      As a race horse? That will have to be evaluated as she heals.

          She is so lucky that her owners and trainers put her health first. If she cannot race again, she will probably be off to be a mama at Claiborne. Not a bad life.

    sizing John has been ruled out of the Cheltenham Gold cup with a hairline fracture of the pelis Jessica Harrington has announced.He has not raced .since a poor performance at Leopardstown over Christmas.This is te 3rd year a Gold cup winner has failed to defend his crown.The short guy is back with a win on Lareena.
    Lovely to see Trevor Hemmings with his Grand National winners Hedgehunter and Ballabrigg in their home on the Isle of Man.Three legends….

      was at Oaklawn
      at paddock by Rivers….talking to one of his caretakers
      got pictures
      he calls him Big Man
      Rivers stable mate Wilbo is Little Man
      asked him about Rivers temperament….he is kind and loving…no biting
      moved outside for race
      chatted with people near rail and told them how I pick Rivers out 4 yrs ago
      there were 4 in race favored over Rivers but one of the guys ran to the window and bet Rivers because of my story…wanted to buy me dinner
      had to refuse
      it was a great race
      his handler also says that Rivers basically knows and loves his job…almost trains himself

        Thanks for the info on Rivers. You told us about him and I have watched out for him being in a race. So nice to know that he has loving caretakers and that he is doing well. Think you might retire him to your back yard?

    Congratulations to Gidu (Frankel’s boy)winning at Tampa Bay.An Akita and Papillon won their respective groups at Crufts tonight.Jan Mine who is a member of our horse racing nostalgia visited Brigadier Gerard.s grave at Newmarket today for his birthday she left flowers, cake, mints, carrots and a card from the group.He is ever remembered.

    Sadly Dina is battling to save 24 TBs who came straight off the track at Delta to killpen she needs another $8000.A $16 million race was held in January it’s a great pity some of that money was’nt set aside for rescues.I wish her well
