Happy Thursday!
We have an exciting post for you today. Dr. Ernie Martinez has written a piece detailing the steps taken at Lane’s End in preparation for foaling. It’s a great example of how Lane’s End leaves nothing to chance. You can follow Dr. Martinez on twitter at @emartinezdvm.
Alys also sent us some great photos of Zenyatta’s first colt playing in the snow.
Enjoy!

Enjoying Late Pregnancy & Preparing for Foaling
By Ernie Martinez II. DVM from Hagyard Equine Medical Institute
As Zenyatta approaches the end of her second pregnancy, we begin to prepare for the arrival of Little 13Z. Very little will change from her daily routine. She will continue to be fed and checked by farm staff twice a day. They will begin to closely monitor her for any signs of premature labor. These might include early udder development or an abnormal vaginal discharge. Thankfully, Queen Z has strided through this pregnancy like a champ and everything has been very routine.
In the last trimester we vaccinate her with a three shot series of vaccinations for Rotaviral diarrhea. This can be a very life threatening diarrhea when acquired in the neonatal stage, and we do all we can try to prevent this disease or at best minimize the severity of any clinical signs. All farm mares receive this series of vaccinations, and we have had very healthy newborn foal crops for some time.
When Queen Z has one month to go we will give her annual series of booster vaccinations. This serves two purposes. First, we provide Queen Z with her annual booster of vaccinations for protection against Equine Herpes Virus 4&1, Eastern-Western Encephalitides, West Nile, Influenza, Rabies & Botulism. Second, and most importantly, by vaccinating her one month before to foaling we will booster the volume and quality of antibodies in her colostrum. Newborn foals are born immunologically naive and must consume and absorb the antibodies from colostrum for their initial immune protection. When 13Z is born we will test her colostrum to insure it is of high quality. If it were to be low, we will give the new foal a pint of colostrum from our colostrum bank. When 13Z is between ten to twelve hours old we will test a blood sample to determine the IgG, or antibody, level. We want all our foals to be above 800 mg/dL. Greater than 1200 mg/dL would be off the charts and even better!
As the foaling date draws nearer, Zenyatta will be brought up to the foaling barn where she will stay until she foals. In the foaling barn she will be under 24 hour surveillance as we patiently wait for her to foal. As she gets closer to foaling, or parturition, her udder will start to develop and the teats will fill. The classic sign that foaling is near is the production of wax or “waxing up.” This is a sebaceous-like pre-colostral secretion that in most cases means foaling is imminent.
Two weeks before Queen Z’s due date we will sample and test her blood for neonatal isoerythrolysis, or NI. We call it an NI Screen. NI occurs when the foal ingests colostrum from the mare with antibodies that react with the foals red blood cells (RBCs). The antibodies are produced by the mare due to transplacental hemorrhage in late gestation. The mare’s immune system identifies the RBCs as foreign because they contain stallion DNA. If the foal were to consume NI antibodies in the colostrum the foal’s RBCs would be coated in the maternal antibodies and cleared by the foal’s immune system, causing a hemolytic anemia. The foal would crash in respiratory distress as it would have no RBCs to carry oxygen. Thankfully, the NI screen allows us to detect NI positive mares. In a positive case we would muzzle the foal and supplement it with tested negative colostrum until the antibodies were cleared from the mares milk. This normally takes 10–12 hours.
So when she draws close to foaling time we will have done all we can do to insure that her colostrum will be top quality, we will have screened her colostrum for NI and we’ve made an easier pathway for the birth of 13Z. Now all we can do is wait.
See you at the Foaling Barn!

Fun news.
We got a new horse at my barn. She’s a mare. A new GF for Red. ;-) She was a rescue, and my instructor’s husband refused to leave her with the previous owner. The woman had the horse in a tarp shelter that blew over in the slightest breeze. She is roughly 200 lbs under weight, but she’s kind and sweet. My instructor is letting me work with her, and if she is good enough after I leave for college, she will be Katy’s replacement when she goes up to her horsey retirement home in the barn just up the road. If she is too wound-up, then she will be sold to a good home. My instructor is very picky, and doesn’t sell to just anyone, so I know she will go to a forever home if she is sold. I really want to make her proud, and do the best I can with her. I’ll find out her name tomorrow.
Do you guys remember the SHERR rescue that needed a name? She was named Daisy, and she is already being adopted out! She and Levi are so in love, SHERR couldn’t think of separating them. So, Levi’s mom stepped up and took Daisy as well. So the two love birds will be together.
I’m ready for this cold to go away. I’m ready for the TC races, and I’m ready to move in to college and be busy all the time. I think I have a terribly short attention span because everything bores me lately. The Internet, I have a huge writer’s block/t.v. script block, I’ve had migraines everyday for the past two weeks, and I feel like I’m going crazy. I don’t even “aww” at the foals when I see pictures. I think I’m just ready for a change in scenery.
59 days to graduation. My cap and gown came in….. and my weight gain shows. Oops. It’s a bit, curve hugging if you will. I think I’ll just roll into graduation in my pjs. It’s my last year anyway. LOL
I am making bookmarks. Does anyone want one? I made a few Paynter bookmarks, but I’m making different ones now. I’m rather proud of my Zenyatta ones. They are laminated and everything.
I have a curious theory as to who I was in my past life. ( I like exploring every angle of belief, and we talked about it in English today.) I’ll have to write about it later, but I think I was an artist, or an aristocrat. Or a mix of the two.

Dear Pati College Bound, it was really nice reading your entry today, and wondering why you think you have writer’s block, your entries should be a book with the title reading, ‘The Chronicles of an exciting life’. I’ll buy it and maybe it will unlock my ‘Reader’s Block’.
I agree with Max, you are doing great things, relax and enjoy college and graduation, even if you roll in in your PJ’S on graduation day.
Send us Pics from the graduation . Take care and God Bless.

Dear, Judy, Ann, Keta, Max
Have been away for a little while. A little under the weather and real busy atwork.
I am on Cloud Nine, though now. I am hopefully if everything works out going to see Leroidesanimaux on this coming up Wednesday. They told me I can come. Yippeeeeee, I am so excited. Am going to the sale on Tuesday in Ocala and to see Leroi on Wed.
Was just over the moon when they told me I could come. Forgot to ask if he liked treats…..Oh my. But you know I am going to carry him some.
Not going to be able to get there in time for the races on Monday as I don’t believe I am going to be able to get there untill later in the afternoon. I heard Edgar Prado and others are going to ride. Would love to see some of them. But Leroi and the sale are top priority this time.
Good luck to all horses and riders racing

Hello Max and Judy and all fellow dumplings.
I haven’t posted for awhile as I am recovering from a stroke but I am much better now.
My mum did get some fantastic photos of Frankel when she saw him at York races.
She has a regular camera so just have the hard copies, he was amazing and she was in tears when she saw him in the paddock.
I am waiting for Z13 and thinking about Zenyatta every day, I am hoping for a grey colt so he can win the Triple Crown, we badly need a new winner and I think Z is the only one that can produce the next champion.
I loved the story of Vyjack and am so impressed with the way he wins and also physically.
I hope US breeders will support Bullet Train he is a bargain compared to his brother and I think he will be a great stallion, can you see Z and BT I think that would be interesting.
Hope everyone is well.
12Z looks so much like his mum, I love him, maybe he will be the next TC winner.

Donna. Sorry to learn that you have been so ill. I hope that you are well on the road to recovery, and we will hear from you often. I remembered that you had said that your mother would be going to see Frankel run his last race. What a priceless experience for her.
We can all learn from Kauto. He looks after himself, has a very positive self image and always has a good time with his search for mints and carrots. I love his will to keep going and his mischievous character, such as taunting Denman and Steve. It really works. Right now he is getting ready for the Gold Cup parade. I will post any new photos. Hunter’s Light Pounces in Maktoum Challenge

Kentucky Derby Unlikely for Ive Struck a Nerve
Horse Racing Nation 3/9/2013 6:22 AM
The Kentucky Derby dream of hometown horse, Ive Struck a Nerve, a 135-1 upset winner of the Risen Star Stakes, may have been derailed this morning when he came back with an ankle injury following his first workout since his stakes victory two weeks ago.
Fair Grounds-based trainer, Keith Desormeaux, said that his first legitimate Derby contender in 23 years of Thoroughbred training came back from the track with an ankle that his veterinarian will examine. “I’m disappointed, not down,” Desormeaux said this morning from the Fair Grounds backside.
Desormeaux said the injury came out of nowhere as the three-year-old son of Yankee Gentelman had been giving every indication of good health. This morning’s four furlong workout that Desormeaux timed in 48.4 seconds and watched as Ive Struck a Nerve changed leads on cue from regular rider James Graham and then galloped out strong. Following a post race walk and bath, Desormeaux noticed his horse was not 100% sound.

Keta, This seems to happen so often to promising 3 year olds. Are they not as sturdy as the horse were years ago or do trainers and owners push some young horse too hard in the quest for the Derby? Soundness seems to be a continuing problem for these young ones.
