Happy Wednesday!
The summer weather has been beautiful at Lane’s End. It time to break out the fly masks and watch Baby Z shed his furry coat.
Zenyatta and her colt are both happy and healthy. Baby Z will be as tall as his mom in no time!
Thanks to everyone who has sent in questions for the experts at the farm. We are continuing to accept submissions, so head back to the last post if you haven’t asked yours yet! Check back in the coming weeks to see answers to some great questions featured in the blog.
In the meantime, enjoy this video of Z and Baby hanging out in the paddock.
Have a great day!

Whoa, Baby Z has gotten so much bigger! I’m looking forward to seeing video of his exploits as he grows up. I hope the Mosses consider naming him “Mondatta,” in keeping w/the “Zenyatta Mondatta” theme started by his mom.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
They can’t. There is already a “Mondatta”–one of their other horses.
Ann
Thanks LE. Little man i love the fuzzy in the middle look.

All: Thank you so much for the condolences and prayers for Chester. I know Susan appreciates it so much and so do I.
Terry C.: It would be a wonderful tribute to Chester if he is the celestial mascot for the Redneck Groups. I know he would love that.

Thanks for the update! Baby Z is getting big and he’s beautiful, just like his mom. I enjoyed the vid. I got a kick out of Baby Z walking over to the camera after he realized it was there. His mom has taught him well! Mother and son look fabulous and I’m glad they are happy!

It sure is nice to see the photos and video, boy 12z is sure growin into a fine young man. His eyes are special as you can see him thinking. Must be something he learned from his mom. 2 of the most beautiful horses, what can I say. Thank you Lanes End.
Max, thank you for the imformative article. I really enjoyed it.

What a strong young man . Z has grown so tall and seems to love the camera like his mom.
I have grown to love the horse population more and more since reading this site. Thanks to all who share here.
Susan sorry for you loss. I have a retired greyhound and as he gets older I pray I can handle his loss when he goes.
I do know the human gift I can give him is for him not to be in pain.My Harley has given me so much happiness.
I will always be grateful to him.
Thank you Zen fans and team Z for sharing.

Thank you, Lane’s End and Team Z, for these pictures and video. I can’t believe how big Z12 is getting! He’s still such a little cutie pie. His blaze looks like a little diamond.

Well handily means she didn’t put a terrible amount of effort into it, and looked nice while she ran. She pretty much did the time without using much energy. That’s how I always took it.

He’s getting so big and all his baby fuzz is almost gone. Too cute. Zenny looks wonderful, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her with so many dapples!
suew/Va
Zenny, you and little Z look amazing. LE must be heaven on earth for horses…how content they both look!
I wonder if LE ever thought they would have a horse like Zenny in their midst. I mean, she is still a superstar with FB friends that keep growing!
I think little Z loves people as much as his fabulous mom.
tony
Zenny is still stunning and her little Z seems to be following in her famous hoofprints.
He sure knows how to find a camera.

Diana Stuart - Dapples on Dapples
Lordy! Zenny’s dapples have dapples! If she doesn’t watch out, she’ll get reclassified as an appaloosa! How beautiful she looks! How HUGE Prince Z is getting! Snuck in to see this and hope to enjoy more later.

Zenny, look at you!! Love the dapples and the fact that you look so happy and content. The Prince sure has gotten taller since the last photos. He’s shedding very well too. He’s going to be just as dark as his Mom and looks more and more like her all the time. Loved how he noticed the camera and went up to it to investigate. What a smart lil man. Just love the updates. Thank You Lanes End and Team Z!

One more thing – – – who walks right up to the camera??? Now I wonder where he got that trait???

Thanks for the new pictures! My how he is growing, he really has a lot of similarities to his precious mommy!

I too love the dapples! But, is that sweet foal going to be seal brown when he grows up? My favorite horse color! Thanks for the photo and video!
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Yes he is, although the Jockey Club will register him as “dark bay or brown.” Both his parents are that color, so there wasn’t much chance that he’d be anything else. (Z may carry chestnut, but Bernie does not.)
Darlene Daniels
Laura,
I always love your posts. You are such a wealth of information. Are you the one that said a long time ago, that TB’s are rarely or never classified as black? Was Eiight Belles, classified as black or dark bay/brown?
Someday I would like to take you to lunch and soak up just a fraction of your knowledge. Thank you Laura for all you teach us!
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Eight Belles was gray. She was still rather dark at the time of her death.
I believe it was Margaret and I, plus a few others, that had a discussion of black. It is rare in TBs, but Margaret rightly pointed out that a number of probable true blacks have been registered as dark brown. Part of it is laziness on the part of the Jockey Club. Sunday Silence was registered as a dark brown but was likely a true black. Another problem is that many black horses will fade in the sun and look brown or bay. Sometimes a genetic test is the only way to tell for sure. Zenyatta is clearly not black, because she has the telltale mealy tan on her muzzle and belly. However, in some brown horses the tan can be faint, and these horses look black during much of the year.
The reason black is fairly rare in the TB population is because the Agouti allele A, which makes the horse bay, is dominant. Another version of Agouti, At, is recessive to A but is dominant to a. At is believed to make the horse brown. Little a is recessive; it is the version that causes the horse to remain black. Bay and brown are the two most common coat colors in the TB population, so the dominant alleles are passed along frequently. Zenyatta does have a black ancestor (Halo–registered dark bay but widely considered to be black), so she might carry black. Some people think Kris S., her damsire, might have been black, although he was registered as brown. Kris S.’s son Symboli Kris S., a popular sire in Japan, appears to be black and has black offspring. He is also registered as brown, but he sure doesn’t look it.
There is no way to tell visually whether a chestnut horse carries A, At, and/or a, as these only work on the Eumelanin (black) pigment, which chestnuts don’t have.

Thank you for keeping us in the loop with Queen Zenyatta and the Little Prince. We still think about them everyday and they are in our prayers every night.
They both look so happy and content! You are doing a wonderful job.

Dear Lane’s End and Team Zenyatta,
Thank you for keeping us up-to-date about our beloved Zenyatta and Baby Z. Any update is such a bright spot in my day!!
The Queen looks so healthy and happy! She is thriving with your excellent care and the love she has for that scamp of a son she has!!
What a scamp he is: so cute, so precocious, so loved, so special. One day in 2015, we of Zenyatta Nation will look at those ears in his bridle and think, yes he grew into them!!
I bet he will love the feel of the wind in them.
Take care,
Mary
