That race showed that poor Mendelssohn was both unprepared and outclassed on dirt. He might have more success back on turf. The chestnuts on the other hand really went for it.

Nearly Half The Kentucky Derby Field Is Racing Against A Half-Brother
And if the horse in the next stall isn’t a half-brother, he’s definitely some kind of cousin.
By Pia Catton and Gus Wezerek in FiveThirtyEight
Filed under Horse Racing Published May 4, 2018
In every Kentucky Derby, breeding is the silent, invisible force that can play a huge role in deciding the outcome of the race. What’s unusual about the 2018 Kentucky Derby is the sameness of the breeding. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/nearly-half-the-kentucky-derby-field-is-racing-against-a-half-brother/
Congratulations to Justify winning in the slop. And congratulations to Aidan getting his 300th grade one victory. He is such a modest gentle guy and a master at his craft.A shame about the ground for Mendelssohn.Justify is some horse though and congrats to Mike as well.
You were right about the choice that Moore made. He should have stayed with Warrior. He gave a good interview to NBC. Nice fellow, and taller than most of the US jockeys.
So sorry that Mendelssohnn had such a hard time — he got slammed/squeezed out right at the first by several coming in on him. Aidan is quite a nice man and so is Ryan. That is one handsome horse though. What a sloppy day!
Congrats to Justify and all connections! He is one beautiful chestnut, and Mike Smith is one outstanding guy.
Marshall,
I saw an interview with several of the Derby trainers and they all said that 14 gate was one they didn’t want since what happened to Mendelssohn had occurred several times especially in those huge fields. Poor guy, he got it from all sides. It is a shame he didn’t get to run his race. My boy, Instilled Regard was one of them who came in on him.

Another one terrific exciting race at the Derby. I am thrilled for Justify and for Mike Smith. I really did like several horses in this race. What a messy track. Any horse and rider behind a couple horses were so covered, and Justify and Mikey so clean!!
Did I hear right that a couple of trainers/owners already said they would not race against Justify at the Preakness?
So on to the Preakness for another big test.
Hugs to all,

Chestnuts 1, 2. Congrats Beautiful boys. Nice third by Audible and fourth by Island Reward at 87 to 1, I think. Mendy had a rough trip getting across from Post 14, plus the messy track conditions.
Shirlee, you mentioned Island Reward for a long shot in the mix. Hope you got lucky with your Exotics.
So happy for Mikey and for Justy. Feel bad for Bolt. I’m hoping VE didn’t over use the whip. Maybe he didn’t like the surface either. Love and Hugs, JB
English papers said that Mendy just did not have the ability to race against the high caliber of horses in that race. It was a good field. However a certain chestnut is still holding on the track record for the KD. What the surface was never mattered to Secretariat. His last race was won in snow showers.
I just watched the Derby replay three times. I counted at least 14 hits on Bolt, even as he faded. He was up third for almost 3/4 of the race and just didn’t look comfortable. He should have been eased. I hope he’s alright. I love this brave boy. Sad to watch. Love and Hugs, JB
Judy,
That is why I cannot care much for Victor. He has won a lot of the big ones but so has Mike. And Mike is not whip crazy. When a horse is clearly out of it, why keep whipping?
I agree with you, Shirlee, I prefer Mikey’s style of riding.
I did read that Bolt was scoped after the race to see if anything was impeding his breathing or if he bled, and everything appeared to be OK. Celeste, as you said, he raced hard in his last two races before the Derby and could just be tired. Understandably so. Hope he recoups and comes back strong. Would Love to see him try the Travers at Saratoga. Love this boy. Love and Hugs, JB

Aidan O’Brien on Mendelssohn: “He just got knocked over coming out of the gate and then he got knocked over again going into the first bend… We’ll take him home and give him a break and come back (for the @BreedersCup Classic). We’ll look forward to the Classic with him.”
O’Brien just doesn’t get it. The other horses like Justify will spend the months between now and the Classic training and running on dirt in major races. There is nothing like that in Europe. This horse has no chance against that field and older horses.
Great derby today, Justify lived up o the hype about his talent. My grand daughter said people were taking off their shoes because of the mud. Can only imagine how difficult it was for the horses and jockeys. Jockeys and horses are such amazing athletes!
I am thrilled over the moon that Justify & Mike won the Derby! A perfect early birthday present for me!
It was also good to see Good Magic trained by locally grown trainer, Chad Brown come in second.
I was 100% committed to wanting Mike and Justify win, but I had hoped to see both Bolt D’Oro & Vino Rosso run better. Maybe they did not like the “river” of a track today. Bolt also had two challenging previous races and maybe they took their toll…
I hope that Mendy is ok; he was slammed once from each side by other horses and I don’t know how he stayed on his feet when he was hit from the right. He didn’t have a chance after that…
The best news of all, though, will be that all of the horses came out of the race safely.
