Happy Derby Weekend!

Morning at Lane's End. Photo by Tyler Matson

Happy Friday!

Are you excited about the Kentucky Derby? We are, and we want to wish the best of luck to all of the horses and their connections!

Zenyatta and Baby Z have been in the Kentucky news recently. Be sure to check out both of these video segments:

Born To Run—WDRB 41 Louisville and Zenyatta’s First Foal A Handful—wave3.com

We will be returning next week with the second installment of our Lane’s End interview series, this time with assistant broodmare manager Donna Vowles. In the meantime, here’s a short video that was taken in early April by Ann Moss. She really captured Z’s excitement about peppermint treats!

Enjoy your weekend!

How very cute Ann, Zenny has been dying for those pepermints after being deprived at the end of her pregnancy. 12 Zenyatta did not seem to know what was going on he
was just following mom. Too little for those mints yet.

IT HAS BEEN A GREAT DERBY WEEK !!!! VERY SPECIAL WIN BY A VERY ASTUTE

Happy Derby weekend to everyone! This year’s race has a very strong field — safe trip for all. I’m rooting for Mike on Bodemeister, but also love Hansen and Union Rags.

Just can’t get enough photos and videos of Our Queen with the little Prince. Thanks to the team at LE for sharing.

    Hugs to all!

Thank you so much for the latest news about Z and her precious son. I just sat spell bound, watching the videos. LOVE LOVE LOVE Z and BabyZ!
I would agree that BabyZ is a handful but did we expect anything else? His antics make me laugh, love the squealing and especially love to watch him run!
Thank you for taking the time to keep us updated!

To Kim and My Z Family Dr. Hansen sent the children mini Hansens. They are so cute. The box came at 10:00 this morning. The children were thrilled. We have little Hansens everywhere : ) What a really nice man. I just can’t get over how he remembered us during one of the biggest races of Hansen’s life. There are some really Great Horse Owners out there.

Hansen was really washed out which lead to the race being run as it was. Perhaps the Derby should do as the Oaks does. Limit the starters to what can be loaded into the regular gate, 14.

I agree TC, twenty 3 year olds is a lot to handel.
Gemologist was not even himself, could be the heat,
Track, but with 14 it would be a little farer.

I think he is spoiled rotten. I do believe he’s going to be just like his mom. We already can see he loves the camera and the attention he’s getting. Well, he better get used to that because he’s going to have a camera on him until he retires.

Did you all notice in the video how he ran and squealed when Zenyatta was running so much ahead of him? looks like he wants to win all his races already. Hmmm, I believe this is a good sign.

Yes, and I feel it’s also a good sign of the playfulness, and bond between them, the connection and relationship, that will benefit him (and her) all the rest of his life.

Have you heard horses squeal, It is even cuter
Because they are so big and the squeal sounds
So child like. Horses squeal when they meet someone
They really like. They often touch noses and squeal,
More so mates, but geldings, too.

Happy Derby weekend to everyone. Such a nice video above. Thank you so much for posting it. I pray so hard for safe trips for all horses this weekend.
I am rooting for American horse and Kentucky Born, Daddy Long Legs. I know he is a very long shot, but I just like him very much.
@Daddy Long Legs, I know you drew post l, but you still can do it. Remember Ferdinand ( I like to remember him every chance I get) he won from post l in the l986 Kentucky Derby. I just love him and his Northern Dancer Line. I know we don’t have the great Willy Shoemaker to ride you, but maybe we can get some Devine Intervention from the Good Lord, Willy Shoemaker and Ferdinand. If my memory is serving me o k this afternoon I think Seattle Slew broke from close to the rail also. Yeah, I know we got to watch out for Calvin Borel also. I do love Take Charge Indy too.
Anyway I wish you could do this in remembrance of Ferdinand ( I like to talk about him like I know Michael Blowen does too.)
There is just a hole in my heart and a lifetime of tears for what happened to Ferdinand. We can I know just remember, use our voices and our resources to help this from happening
Go Daddy Long Legs, You break wonderfully from post l……….Do it for the horses of the past. Love,Peggy

I remember a local news interview that Bill Shoemaker did upon hearing the news of Ferdinand’s death and knowing how he died. Shoe was livid! He could barely speak, he was clearly distraught and a little misty eyed. He also said that if he had known this would have been Ferdinand’s fate, HE WOULD have flown over there to bring him home – NO QUESTION! At this point in the Shoe’s life, he was in a wheelchair but I do believe that he would have done it! I remember him saying that this should be NO horses fate, ever. His heart was certainly larger than he was when it came to horses. Bless both their souls …..

For some reason, that interview has stayed with me through the years when I think of what happened to him. I can still see Shoe in his wheelchair … almost breaking down … I remember tearing up and was appalled at the horror of it all, and that this was allowed to happen. Thank goodness things were changed for the better for our precious horses going overseas. I do believe that Mr. Shoemaker had a hand in bringing that about before he passed away in 2003. Rest his soul ….
