Happy Friday!
Are you excited about the Kentucky Derby? We are, and we want to wish the best of luck to all of the horses and their connections!
Zenyatta and Baby Z have been in the Kentucky news recently. Be sure to check out both of these video segments:
Born To Run—WDRB 41 Louisville and Zenyatta’s First Foal A Handful—wave3.com
We will be returning next week with the second installment of our Lane’s End interview series, this time with assistant broodmare manager Donna Vowles. In the meantime, here’s a short video that was taken in early April by Ann Moss. She really captured Z’s excitement about peppermint treats!
Enjoy your weekend!

Karen,
Thank you for sharing all the links. They are wonderful.
You have a great day of racing too!
Darlene Daniels
Just a moment of reminiscing.
May 3, 1975 Foolish Pleasure won the Kentucky Derby. I was watching with my Mom while I put on my makeup and did my hair, getting ready for my first date with my husband!
Terry Crow
Was this after you planted the tomatoes?
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Too cute, Darlene! Great story!

Dear Lane’s End Team and Z Fans:

Even when you know, you never know.

Dear Sign and Terry C.:
Hope Alpha came out of the Derby sound and maybe they’ll try the Preakness with another jockey. Hugs, JB

DITTO, AND IT WAS A GREAT WIN, GARY STEVENS SAYS SHE IS SO SUCESSFUL BECAUSE SHE PLACES HER HORSE TO WIN, AND SHE DID TO THAT.
Chris Balmes
I just cannot tell you how much I am enjoying these 3 videos; I just had to watch them again because I kept hearing his little squeal and laughing to myself; he is simply adorable. She is so proud and having so much fun with him – you can just tell. And honestly I think she was in a hurry to get to her “mom” – not just to the mints; although I have no doubt she loves them. This story just continues to be so heartwarming. He certainly doe think he is “hot stuff” – lol!

Mikey and Amazombie up next….Shack is there too….oh my
Terry Crow
Shack held off Amazombie in a spirited duel. Kudos to both horses for a well run race. I do have some business to take care of so I may not be back until Sunday.
signofthetimes
DID NOT SEE THE RACE, BUT LOVE THE VIDEO
SHACK IS BACK !!!!!!!
FINALLY AT THE RIGHT DISTANCE.
Terry Crow GP
Agree. Got to love Shack as he is one of the few good older horses still competing. And, I can’t believe that I referred to a four year old as a older horse. But, in the context of what is going on today, he is.
Ann
Yeah!!!
Didn’t a six year old set a track record on Oaks Day?
Shack is just warming up.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sign, Terry C., AJ, Ann, Carol and Z Fans:
Soooo happy for Shack. Hugs, JB
AJ from CA
Love Mikey but the Shack is back – how great is that! One of the best races ever.
carol in utah
I agree….great race…wonderful interview with Mikey on NBCSports now
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Yeah, Shackleford……………………………….
Brenda S..Ontario, Canada
Zenny, The Derby coverage on NBC just mentioned your love of Guinness so I guess we can forget the Mint Juleps. I wonder if Lane’s Ed could tell us whether you got the odd glass after Baby Z was born.

DON’ THINK SHE IS ALLOWED ANY ALCOHOL ANYMORE; SHE WAS BRED SHORTLY AFTER 4-6 WEEKS; ALCOHOL CAN CAUSE MISCARRIAGES.
Abigail from Montreal
So pleased to see so many of my original Zenster family here — Dawn, Terry, Brenda S., Shari, judy Berube, Darlene, Karen, Carol, Barbara Wood….IT’S JUST LIKE OLD HOME WEEK! Thanks to Ann Moss & Team Zenyatta @ Lane’s End for this lovely post and the brand new baby photos of Z-12. Love & hugs to all!
Darlene Daniels
So Great to hear from you too Abigail. Hope you are well and enjoy the Ky. Derby!
Terry Crow GP
Abagail-You are still a charter member of the Canadian chapter and it is a most welcome surprise to see you posting. Come back to visit us more often. Hope Doodlebug is doing well.

Please, God, on this Derby Day, protect all of your innocent creations and the jockeys who guide them! May they run on strong, swift legs! Please, hold all of them in the palm of your hand until they are all back safely in their stalls.

Trina Nagele in So Cal
High hoof, Darlene!

Darlene-I bow to a superior handicapper. It was great to see Lava Man and he was getting a lot of pub on TV, as well he should.

WoooWhoo – Yippeee! California here we come!!!! One Two in the DERBY!! Congratulations to all the connections of I’ll Have Another!! And all the horses in the race. (my picks were CC, I’ll Have Another and Hansen – the two California horses were my top picks, didn’t matter which one, as long as one of them won!) YAY!!!

Lava Man looked like he wanted to run the race….
Trina Nagele in So Cal
I think you’re right.
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
The 5 California horses finished in the top 7 in the Derby! WOW!!!

Keta
Great race!
Bodemeister set the 5th fastest fractions in Derby history.
BUT, he didn’t win.
I’ll Have Another must have gotten very good advice from Lava Man on winning.
On to Preakness
Very nice payoffs
Congrats Darlene–good choice!
Brenda S..Ontario, Canada
Congratulations on a great race by I’ll Have Another, Flower Alley and Three Chimneys will be celebrating tonight. Great job by Mikey with Bodemeister. Too bad that Union Rags got boxed in leaving the gate but he did well in spite of it. The best thing – they all came home.
Linda Edwards in NJ
Hi Brenda: Thanks for the info. I got to see Flower Alley when I was at Three Chimneys back in 2009. What a great race!!! It’s been 23 years since a horse won the Santa Anita Derby and the Kentucky Derby.
What a great run Bodemeister. Looking forward to the Preakness. I’ll be there. If anyone is going please let me know.
– Linda
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Have fun, Linda! We’re looking forward to your next trip to the West Coast.
Terry Crow GP
Indeed.
Linda Edwards in NJ
Thanks Trina and Terry. I am really thinking of coming out on Gold Cup Day. Hope it works out.
Eveline / Maryland.
Hi Linda, I’ll probably will be at the Preakness. Would love to catch up with you that day. How about ladies day on friday the 18th? Anybody going that day?

BAD BREAK CAUSED UNION RAGS PROBLESM; HE WAS A STEP BEHIND AND GOT
SANDWICHED AND PUSHED BACK AT THE START.
HE NEEDS TO RETRAIN ON BREAKING, MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE TO CHANGE THAT
THOUGH
Terry Crow GP
Unfortunately for me, I was correct in my prediction. The Derby was decided in the first 1/4 mile.
Max
Brenda S. You must be proud as a Canadian about this race. The owner of I’ll Have Another is from Windsor, Ontario and the jockey did most of his riding in Vancouver. I’ll Have Another has Danzig, one of Northern Dancer’s great sons, on both sides of his pedigree. The owner quoted Wittgenstein in his acceptance comments. You do not see that every day.
Congrats to all who helped get this wonderful result, especially to Laval Man who did a great mentoring job. On to Baltimore.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
We might, dare I say, have a good candidate for the Triple Crown? Great genes. Hugs, JB
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Brenda S.:
You are so right. The best thing, they all came home. Hugs, JB
signofthetimes
Dear Judy B and Brenda S.
Yes so very important they all came home safely, even though Take Charge Indy
was injured, Calvin just took him back when he stared having pain.
Hugs
Darlene Daniels
Now that I have calmed down a bit, I would like to say Thank You God, they all were safe, and thank you for this awesome country we live in and this wonderful tradition that has gone on for 138 years.
Mary J Blige, very nice job with the National Anthem. Thank You.
NBC, very nice coverage. I had my doubts, but I think you all did a very nice job. However, it will never be like the days with Jim McKay, in my opinion.
Finally, Congratulations and thank you to all the horses and their connections. They all worked hard and all were very deserving to be in this years Kentucky Derby.
And the hats were amazing!
Debbie G/Kentucky
I’ve finally calmed down too, Darlene. I get so nervous and worked up, and then bam, two minutes and it’s all done. I’m just happy that everyone came home safe and sound. I even won a little money. I agree with you about Jim McKay. There’ll never be another one like him. Do you ever go to the Derby?
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Congratulations on your winning bets, Debbie!
Debbie G/Kentucky
Thank you Trina!
Terry Crow GP
At least Howard Cosell was not involved as he was when ABC had the rights.
Debbie G/Kentucky
You’re right, Terry. Howard was OK when he stuck to football and boxing, but I couldn’t imagine him ever doing a horse race. Another person I always liked on ABC was Charlsie Cantey. I don’t know what ever became of her. I haven’t seen her in years.
Terry Crow GP
That is a good question. Wasn’t she the one who followed on horseback like Donna Brothers does now?
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Debby G. and Terry C.:
Here’s a Wiki on Charlsie Cantey. Note at the bottom indicates she retired from television after the 2005 BC. Hugs, JB
judy berube from Rhode Island
Oops. Would help if I posted the link. Hugs, JB
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlsie_Cantey
Terry Crow GP
Judy-Thanks for the link. I did not know that she had been an exercise rider for Ruffian.
signofthetimes
I really like Charlsie, but she retired and said she was getting burned out and it was time. She was such a great announce with such great track
experience; riding etc….
Ingrid Arnone
Oh my goodness! My dear’s friends, probable you will not to believe me… but I just won!!! Do you remember my picks for the Derby I said that I was going to pick one of them to bet $300, however, I made a booboo, I split my bet between Went the Day Well, and I’ll Have Another, but I still got a very good paid off. Well, you paid for changing your own rules. Hope you all did well also hugs Ingrid.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Congratulations, Ingrid!
Terry Crow GP
Ingrid-You wouldn’t mind lending some money to an old pal would you?
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Ingrid A.:
Nice handicapping. Good for you. Hugs, JB
Andrea
I am so glad everyone finished safely. I even made a little money! Time for one more julep!
signofthetimes
ME, TOO. “I’LL HAVE ANOTHER” MINT JULEP, PLEASE !!!!!
Terry Crow GP
Andrea-See my response to Ingrid above.
Brenda S..Ontario, Canada
Hi Linda, I wish I could say that I would be at the Preakness, I’d love to see a Triple Crown race, but that will have to stay on the Bucket List. I was at Three Chimneys in 2009 and was lucky enough to see Flower Alley cover a mare. You too must have seen Smarty and Big Brown as well as Dynaformer.
I will be going to the Queen’s Plate at Woodbine in June, the tickets for Vic and I arrived this past week, and we have the same seats as last year. We’ll also be at the Prince of Wales in July so we get to see two out three of the Canadian Triple Crown races.
Enjoy your visit to Baltimore, hopefully you’ll see I’ll Have Another win the second leg – I think we’re overdue for a Triple Crown winner.
Linda Edwards in NJ
Hi Brenda: Wow, Wow Wow!!!! Now there is a treat that’s on my bucket list. Wishing you and Vic a wonderful time.
Yes, I did see Smarty, Big Brown and Dynaformer. I never got to see Smarty race. I did get to see Big Brown race twice at Monmouth Park. That was really special. And I am really glad I got to see the famous Dynaformer when I did. So sorry when I read of his passing.

What a wonderful day for So Cal in Kentucky. I’ll Have Another, takes the roses. Congratulations to his owners and team. Bodemeister shows he’s “for real” and much more. Wow those fractions!
Flower Alley: They’ll soon be updating the online Stallion Register from:
Best DISTORTED HUMOR at Stud.
Two G1 Winners in 2011 – New G1
SW in 2012, KY Derby (G1) hopeful
I’LL HAVE ANOTHER ($634,000).
TO:
Best DISTORTED HUMOR at Stud.
Sire 0f 2012 KY Derby (G1) Winner
I’LL HAVE ANOTHER
Dullahan did his big brother, Mine that Bird, proud. Their mom, Mining My Own, is writing her own pedigree…Dam of two Kentucky Derby runners, one a winner the other placed. She has a Tapit two-old filly, dropped a Giant’s Causeway colt last month and is booked to Bernardini. What do they call broodmares like her….Blue Hens.
Oh my! The day just got better. Morning Line, making his first start for John Shirreffs, in the Mervyn LeRoy at Hollywood Park, holds on to win. Nice.
sue and tony
Good for John! We love it when a good man finishes first.
