Happy Derby Weekend!

Morning at Lane's End. Photo by Tyler Matson

Happy Friday!

Are you excited about the Kentucky Derby? We are, and we want to wish the best of luck to all of the horses and their connections!

Zenyatta and Baby Z have been in the Kentucky news recently. Be sure to check out both of these video segments:

Born To Run—WDRB 41 Louisville and Zenyatta’s First Foal A Handful—wave3.com

We will be returning next week with the second installment of our Lane’s End interview series, this time with assistant broodmare manager Donna Vowles. In the meantime, here’s a short video that was taken in early April by Ann Moss. She really captured Z’s excitement about peppermint treats!

Enjoy your weekend!

Wow! What a day. SO thankful they are safe. Anyone have info. on Calvin/Take Charge Indy? I did not expect Daddy Long Legs to finish well from that position and the long trip over.
Congratulations to I’ll Have Another! Like Brenda S., we saw Flower Alley cover a mare in ’09 as well. Wouldn’t it be something if either of us saw him from the very beginning?
Congrats to Bodemeister–what a great run!
    And Dullahan/Mining My Own–what a girl.
    Congrats John Shirreffs too!
I don’t know how the men stood it in that heat/humidity, wearing suits.
Now it’s on to the Preakness.
    @Andrea–any word on Blanchie?

Congratulations to I’ll Have Another. What a great Derby with such a splendid field of horses this year!

Love to Zenyatta, Baby Z, and all her connections.

Amen to Andrea’s prayer for the horses and their jockey’s for this derby weekend.
When is Bernie’s sweet boy racing, I’ll root for him.Go Alpha!

Now to the matter at hand, it was a treat seeing the video’s of Queen Z and her pesky darling Prince!!!!!. He is just toooooo adorable. All that Running and Prancing, precious.Always brings to mind the name, BORN TO RUN.

I love the fact that he is so feisty and opinionated, ain’t no one telling him what to do except his darling mama. God Bless and keep them both safe. All that running the Queen is doing chasing Prince around, is it good for her?, given her condition. I guess its all good or else they wouldn’t allow it.

Enough writing, LOL to all, till next time, God Bless the Mosses and all the people taking care of our loved ones.

I admit that I was wrong about the horses who raced in California. However, it has still been a long time since a Cal bred won the Derby.

I was so overjoyed that Shack won that the Derby felt like an anticlimax. I was for Mike on Bodemeister and for Gemologist. What in heck happened to Gemologist? He finished at the back of the pack. And Rags–what happened to our handsome Rags? The important thing is–they all came home safe, both horses and jockeys. At least that’s what we know so far…

Believe it or not, I have heard and read some wags blaming Mike for having Bodemeister lose! He was supposed to lay back until Trinniberg was tired and then surge ahead. Instead, he let Bode take the lead. To me, it was a wonderful ride and he almost made it! What do you think? I say Mike did the best he could in such a strong field and i hope he gets the mount in the Preakness.

Question: no fillies have ever run in the Derby? I truly don’t know…

Barb. So far only three fillies have won the Derby. This article discusses Genuine Risk and mentions the other two winners.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but after a mere 32 years, I’m still cranky at Angel Cordero for bumping Genuine Risk as she was coming around to pass him and Codex in the Preakness. It was and still is one of the most outrageous moments in Triple Crown racing. I’ve never carried a grudge in life except this one, and i just don’t think I am getting over it.

The best of the fillies to run in the Derby and lost were probably Silver Spoon and Althea.

I heard Bob Baffert’s interview after the race – he WAS happy with the way Mike rode Bodemeister. He said that he told Mike that if he wants to run, let him go. And that is what Mike did.

Karen, yes, Baffert said he doesn’t like getting 2nd, but that Mike rode Bode the best way. Don’t hold him back! Mike also said before the race that he would be off the lead or take the lead depending on how they broke from the gate. You can’t strangle a horse – you have to let it run its race! :-)

          May 7, 2012 at 7:37 am

Agree completely. More races are lost by jocks strangling their horses back than by letting them run. Mike’s ride was a good one.

Dear Zenyatta. Well my beautiful girl, it has been so wonderful to see all of the pictures and videos of you and your little Prince these past several weeks. He is so very, very special; growing like a weed and developing a personality to match his amazing mother!! My heart soared watching you and he racing across your paddock, with your tail flagged into the air. It brought me back to that day not so long ago when you were released in your paddock at Lane’s End for the first time. You were beautiful beyond words then and you still are. I received my “It’s a Boy” poster. I love it! Thank you to wonderful Team Z and everyone at Lane’s End for keeping us up to date and sharing so many fantastic photos, videos and gift items. Leonard and Krista at your Zenyatta shop are the best!

What a great weekend of racing this has been. I watched the Oaks last night. It was so special to see Believe You Can win. Such an accomplishment for Rosie and this wonderful filly’s connections. I was glued to the TV all of today watching Derby Day. Too fun!!!!!! How I was cheering Bodemiester and Mikie on, they were just nipped at the wire. I’ll Have Another ran beautifully. So many gorgeous horses and amazing behind the scenes stories. Reasons I love the sport so.

It saddened me a great deal to hear of Dynaformer’s passing. I received an e-mail from Three Chimneys just before they released the news to the press. It brought tears as I read it. I had seen him several times when visiting the farm, he had such a presence. I also got to spend time with his son Purim at Richland Hills. He was so very much like his sire and absolutely gorgeous. Now they are both gone from us. RIP.

To all of my amazing Z-friends, how I have missed being with you. I have just spent the last few hours catching up and reading every post in the blogs since I last wrote. Shari is correct; a lot has been going on in my life. Work has been hectic since I got back from Washington DC, mother had her surgery (she is doing great), my dear friend lost her father and other friend had her thoroughbred jumper die of colic. To top it off, it was time for my annual check-up at the Mayo Clinic. Luckily, they allowed me to have the tests run at our regional area hospital, so I did not have to travel to Scottsdale. The first week was waiting for results, which were that the tumor had grown, not exactly what I wanted to hear. The next week was waiting for the surgeon to decide what that meant to me. I am sure you have all experienced those times when you just feel like you have hit a wall. No matter how optimistic you are, when you have had some serious diagnoses and surgeries before a little doubt can creep in. I was emotionally and physically exhausted. The word finally came this Friday and the decision is that although the tumor has gotten larger, it is not currently posing a threat that would warrant the surgery which would be required to remove it. We will continue to monitor. PRAISE BE, LIFE IS GOOD!!!!

I have to apologize if I worried some of you. Shari and I had been talking on the phone about her farther also and she voiced some of your concerns for me and I read others tonight. I cannot tell you how much your kind thoughts mean to me and touch my heart. I find strength in knowing that you would be there for me if I am ever in need, with your prayers and well wishes. Thank you!!!

Sweet dreams to Zennie, baby Z12 and each of my dear Z-friends. To Dottie, you’re the best!! I love you all in Dumplinghood!!! Hugs and kisses. Dawn XXXXOOOO

There was a thought I wanted to share with all of you that I think describes the Zen-magical spirit of our friendships and the difference we can make in the lives we may touch:

To the world you might just be one person, but to one person, you might just be the world.

A Birthday Poem for Sally B.
    (May 6, 2012)

    Dearest Sally,
    When you tally
    Your blessings
    On this birthday,
    I’m guessing
    You’ll say
    Like many another
    That family and close friends
    (Human, canine and equine)
    Top the list
    Of what brings you bliss
And makes life for you fine.
    In the family line,
You have a twin sister and a brother.
    Before 2011
The latter’s health was in steep decline,
But his life was saved in the nick of time–
It may have been that your dear mother,
    Already up in heaven
    And thus in close proximity
    To the Divinity,
Sought God’s help for your ailing brother.
Perhaps she stood right by God’s ear
And confided to Him her greatest fear —
    That her son
    From this earth would depart
Before his time here was done
For want of a healthy heart.
    His own was failing–
Indeed he had only days left to live
Before he would breathe his last
When a matching donor to the next life passed
    And was able to give
    The life-saving bequest
    That fulfilled a request
    Made from desperation.
    ’Twas on the birthday
    Of their mother
    That Sally’s brother
    Woke post-operation
With a new heart in his chest
    And felt so deeply blessed.

    Sally and her husband
    Raised two sons
    And now with two granddaughters
    And one grandson
    Have tons and tons
    Of fun
    Though those young ’uns
    Recently caught her
    Falling off a pogo stick!
    Though it roused laughter
    All around,
    Sally found
    It taught her
Her reflexes on that pogo stick
Might not be all that quick
    As before,
And she’d like you to know
    That thereafter
    She chose to forego
    Any more
    Pogo!

    Loyal readers here
    Will recall
That Sally B and Sue Fredrick
Have been BFFs for many a year—
    In fact they’ve been pals
Since they were both single gals.
    Sally and Sue
    Always found much to do,
    Hiking, biking and riding,
Often with a dog along too.
    Then both married
And yet their friendship forward carried,
    First having great fun
    As a young foursome,
    Then raising families
    With many joint activities.
    Sally and her hubby
    Remain to this date
    Delightfully chummy
    With Sue
    And Sue’s wedded mate
Though now it’s a bit harder to do
    Since the Fredricks did move
    Ninety-some miles away.
    Undaunted by distance, yesterday–
    On the renowned
    First Saturday
    Of May—
The four, reunited, could be found
Where the Fredrick family now dwells
In the vicinity of Wisconsin Dells.
    They all gathered ’round
    A TV
    The Derby to see,
    Mint juleps in hand.
    Each cheered of course
    For their favorite horse
    As the Thoroughbreds churned
    Out of that final turn
    And charged before the grandstand
    To where Destiny
    The winner awaited!
    I’ll Have Another was fated
    The roses to wear–
    And indeed
He was one of the many
    For whom Sally did care,
As she a week ago related.
    Though she thought any
    Of the entered twenty
    Could carry the day,
    Another of her stated picks
    Was Mikie’s Bodemeister,
    The gallant steed
Who for most of the race
    Was on the lead
    Setting the pace
And who gamely held on to place.
Surely this brought Sally a measure
    Of pleasure,
    But she had confessed
What she would truly like best:
Since she A P Indy does so treasure,
    She was wishing
That the race might be won
By the A P Indy son
    Who wound up finishing
    Ahead of just one.
    Jockey Calvin Borel
Had positioned Take Charge Indy well,
    But when his pace
    Began diminishing,
    It became clear,
    I fear,
    That in this Derby race
    He wasn’t on his game.
    All the same,
    Dear Sally, don’t dismay–
    I feel confident to say
    That this kin
Of your beloved A P Indy
Will return to race and WIN
    Some other day.

    Dear Sally,
    You’ll be
    Homeward bound
    Today,
    And along the way
    Perhaps you’ll fondly contemplate
    Possibilities
    For the Triple Crown.
    Once you’re again in town,
    Your family will congregate
    And very soon
    This Sunday afternoon
    Your home will reverberate
    With happy sounds
    All around
    As you your birthday celebrate–
We hope it’s the best to date!

Happy birthday, Sally B, and many, many more!

      Dear Trina,
Lovely, lovely, lovely poem for Sally B’s birthday.

      Sally B,
Take Charge Indy was within striking distance,
But just injured his ankle. He is one of Indy’s most
Talented son’s. I wish him a speedy recovery and
A win in the BCC just like his Dad.

I did not see Borel/Take Charge Indy drift back, but just saw
          the final results.

I am just very thankful Calvin took care of TC Indy; he is such a very
kind man; I am trying to find the photo Stonestreet took of Calvin
          and Rachel. He is hugging her head and she has her eyes closed;
like it is so good to see you, I have missed you and now I can relax.

Very touching, when I find it I will post it. It was on HRTV today.

Sign, I have finally my phone, computer and TV working!! I missed learning about TC Indys’ injury. Thanks for the heads up. It probably was that wet slop by the rail that did it. Below, I read he is going to have surgery to remove a chip? Thank God it was not worse. I do feel some of these awesome horses just did not have there fair chance out there.

I am happy for I’ll Have Another, Bodemeister and Dullahan. Dullahan sure charged forward toward the end nearly passing or tieing Bodemeister. I am tickled for Mike for sure.

I agree that Mikey had a great ride on Bodemeister. He and Bob know the horse best. I would think (someone correct me if I’m wrong) that holding a horse back, unless he knows how to close and can do it, could cause the horse to lose confidence when others pass him. But what do I know?

Good morning, Barbara. Thank you so much for thinking about me. You are all very special to me! I agree that Mickie and Bodemeister both did great and came oh so close. I think they are going to continue to be a force. The special background pieces on Bob Baffert were especially touching yesterday and seeing him get so choked up on the walk over with his son Bode just demonstrated what is really most important. Terry,
It was like bumper cars in this year’s Derby.
It is a wonder that there were not more serious injuries
So, I consider the chips & hydration problems minor to what could have been. It is not to minimize surgery. These should heal.

Thanks for that link, Judy, the photo is wonderful. But I may be a party-pooper, because I just can’t get past how much I’ve seen Calvin use the whip in her races. The most interesting commentary on it, that I have found so far, is here: http://sidfernando.wordpress.com/2009/09/08/was-rachel-alexandra-whipped-too-much-in-the-woodward/

Among the responders are a breeder, a trainer, and a former jockey. Some talked about the unfairness of blaming Borel because it’s Rachel, but ignoring all the whipping by others less-celebrated (e.g., Ramon Dominguez). And I had no idea, but one writer pointed out that another jockey had gotten a 10-day suspension for NOT using the whip, and getting nipped at the wire.

Another commented: “…And Borel’s comment after the race that hitting her does not make her go faster begs the question of, well then, Calvin, why did you whip her so much? I think Haskin got it right when he said that Calvin seemed to think the whip was necessary in that moment. My take is that the man is under tremendous pressure with Rachel and did not want to be the reason she lost by a head.” There was some agreement with Haskin’s comment.

I liked the link for the thoughtful, sprightly discussion — not totally cut-and-dried.
