Sandy, thanks for the Hovis update. Hope you get sun very soon!
Luv ya.
Our little girl, Zellda, worked at Santa Anita yesterday. 4F in 50:08. Guess she will be a little girl to me forever. Good health and good luck to her.
The quarantine hasn’t been lifted as yet; should be soon. I have been to visit Angela a number of times and going back again this week. She’s progressing well; will take a while before she’s completely healed 100%.
Angela said I could give Charlie some muffins as long as I stayed in the unrestricted area, so I did get to see him as well. He and most of the other horses are doing fine. There are still a few who are being monitored, but all and all, it should be completely A OK soon. Thank you for your sweet concern and your prayers. Love Ya. Hugs, JB
Happy 02/02/2020.
Hope you saw the Martha Washington Stakes from Oaklawn yesterday.
Taraz looked like she was out for a quick breeze. Gorgeous girl! Congrats.
Congrats to all who ran yesterday.
Happy 02-02-2020 to you, too, Neighbor Ann!
Hope this palindrome date brings us a good day. Did Sir Walter Wally see his shadow? I assume he didn’t — the last couple of years they waited to bring him out until a cloud passed in front of the sun. Sad that you can’t even trust the groundhog! ? It was cloudy in Pennsylvania this morning apparently, so Phil didn’t see his shadow. Oh well, even if Wally did see his shadow, we can’t have six more weeks of what we haven’t had, can we? So far winter has basically been a no-show. We have the miserable rainy season now between fall and spring. Squish, squish!
Congrats to Taraz and her connections! More Congrats to Midcourt and John Shirreffs, too!!
Sandy,
Thank you for posting Hovis every Friday. Nothing like kicking off the weekend with a laugh. I know Sheena is proud of you.
Marshall,
Hope little Fenn is doing well. Again, Bless you and all who rescue these sweet creatures of God’s. I don’t know anything much about dogs, but do know what a joy my 2 rescue cats add to my life. Of course, the girl Mitzi is Queen of the House and Meow and I just do here bidding.
Fenn is coming along; although, he can’t be trusted just yet. He is quite the little love-bug though! He will get his stitches out tomorrow, and my vet will get his first look at this little guy. He has that typical terrier personality which is very cute. Yes indeed, my dogs have always brought joy to my life just as your cats have to yours. Hope I never have to live without the company of dogs. Thanks for your kind words, my friend!
Bailey loves having a little brother again, too. They chase each other around and do a bit of pseudo wrestling.
Our Sally sent me some cute and funny pet tails (pun intended). I will shorten my favorite one: A German Shepard, a Doberman and a cat went to heaven. God asked them each what they had done on earth. The Shepard said, “I protected my master”. God said, come sit by my right side. The Doberman said, ” I was loyal to my master”. God said, come sit by my left side. When the cat was asked the same question, the cat said, “I think you’re sitting in my chair”. ?
I needed a good laugh and that did the trick. Love and Hugs, JB
What a blessing our pets are. So glad you were able to see Charlie and give him some muffins. Hope all will be well soon and things can get back to normal for Angela and all the horses.
judy berube
Dear Shirlee:
Thanks for your sweet comments on Charlie, Angela and the farm.
Yes, pets are a blessing and a gift. Looking after Lola is a delight every day and an incentive to see all that’s good through her joyful innocence. Dogs, Cats and Horses; what would we do without them!
Love the cat joke! I have 3 cats and I can see that happening. So typical of cats. I have a needlework pillow that has “If you want the best seat in the house, you’ll have to move the cat”. I am baby sitting my best friend’s terrier this week. He has completed his cat-dog training, courtesy of my cats.
Harvey’s Lil Goil, filly by American Pharoah out of a Tapit mare, was first in the Busanda at Aqueduct. Looked like she was just out for a gallop. A beautiful gray girl.
Connections for Taraz, by Into Mischief, are considering the Kentucky Derby or Derby Oaks. Another fast beauty.
Go fillies!
judy berube
Dear Carolina:
God Bless you; three lucky kitties. Gotta love their independent spirits.
Thanks for the heads-up on Harvey’s Lil Goil (love that name). Sounds like she and Taraz are off to a splendid start. Girl Power!!!! Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Carolina and Judy,
I love that name, too! Congrats to Harvey’s Lil Goil and all connections. Best of Luck to her and safe, sound racing always.
Thanks for the laugh, Judy! Outstanding cat/dog joke. ?
The name is Fenn! He has responded to it, and it seems to fit. ?
Just as with some of my other dogs’ names, it seemed awkward at first but now seems more natural.
Thanks to everyone for the good wishes and positive vibes! ?
Congrats to Midcourt and JS and also to Taraz too.
Got my eye on Derby contender beautiful Tiz The Law. He won The Holy Bull Stakes on Saturday and he did it after being steadied. Brave heart. Here’s the replay. He’s No. 3. Gorgeous boy. Wow! Love and Hugs, JB
Thanks for posting this replay. Tiz The Law looks mighty fine indeed! Nice the way he handled that little intrusion into his path. Congrats to him and his connections!
Sackatoga Stables is the owner — Funny Cide’s people. Yay!
That’s great. Have always liked Tagg. Good trainer.
Thanks for the replay. Smart boy!
Marshall (NC Broad)
Yes, Barclay Tagg is a nice guy and a great trainer!
I will always have a soft spot for Funny Cide and his owners (and their school bus transportation)! That was a wonderful success story.
Good Luck to them on the Derby trail this year — safe and sound always.
Go Tiz the Law, Go!
Churchill Downs will debut a twenty stall gate for the 2020 Kentucky Derby. Still won’t watch the race live; will wait for the replay. Twenty young horses too nerve wracking for me. Maybe the gate will help reduce all the shuffling and bumping at the start. Hope so.
Love and Hugs, JB
Judy,
I hope the new gate helps at the Derby. I do think that reducing the field down to 12 or 14 would make it a lot safer. Don’t know how they would decide who gets in but as we know 20 horses increase the chances of accidents. One big spill in the Derby would just about be the end.
I am awaiting the debut of Independence Hall and Structor to see how they do. Right now Tiz The Law looks good.
Marshal,
Fenn has chosen his name. He is one lucky dog.
Nice article with beautiful photo of Midcourt and VE. His owner, Lee Searing, describes him as a “goofball” and credits JS with getting him interested in training. Too cute! Love and Hugs, JB
Thank you for your comments and the articles. I love Tiz the Law as well. Handsome boy and it is easy to spot his blaze face. Will be watching John Sherriff’s Midcourt too. So many good ones to watch this year, girls and boys.
The picture of the 24-stall gate in Australia is amazing. Can you imagine what it will be like when the gates open. Thundering hooves. I really hope the new 20-horse gate at Churchill Downs helps all the bumping and keeps the horses evenly spaced. I still wonder if 20 horse are just too many for the width of the track , whether it is two gates or one.
Praying for safe training and racing for all these beautiful, courageous horses and jockeys.
Don’t know for sure, but guessing mid March to Mid April???
Paulick Report article dated 8/13/19 announced Z in foal to Candy Ride. If she was about three months along at that time, then March/April seems right. Getting close. Can’t wait to see this sweet filly. Prayers for safe delivery and healthy Z and baby. Love and Hugs, JB
Judy,
Thanks for the post. She is a very pretty good girl with a magnificent pedigree. Those MdO fillies seem to be special. Was good to see John’s comments on bringing her along.
So glad the Mosses are her owners and he is her trainer.
Agree, something special about MdO’s. She’s such a beautiful little girl. Was nice to see her in that work. God Bless her and JS; Godspeed. Love and Hugs, JB
Martha the Mini Horse is just precious. Love those little “high kicks”. So heartwarming. Rescuers have a special place in heaven.
Zellda is looking fantastic. I am glad JS is allowing her to come along at her own pace. She will be ready when she’s ready. Safety first. So exciting to watch her videos and see how much she has matured.
Speaking of special, how’s Fenn doing? Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Judy,
Fenn is just marvelous! I am totally in love with this dear little being. He has had a good couple of days with no goof-ups. Fenn seems to be a sharp little guy, and he is most certainly a love-bug. He has won over both Bailey and me. Thanks for asking!

Today is a very sad day for Cappy & me. It was 1 year ago today that Amy left us. I sometimes still feel her presence where she used to lie on the pad near me while I was on my computer.
I am so grateful that I have Cappy because he is such a great comfort. He loves to snuggle when I need someone to do this. I’d like to get him another sibling, but I cannot afford another dog on my retirement right now. I think I would like to get another pit bull or a pit mix like Cappy some day.
Thoughts and prayers to you both. Please be comforted by your wonderful memories of sweet Amy and know that you gave her a happy life with lots of love. That’s the best gift anyone can get.
Blessings to you and your devoted Cappy. May you continue to comfort each other — lots of snuggles. RIP dear Amy
So sorry for your loss. I had the same feeling when I lost my almost 17 year old Toy Poodle, Gina. Used to feel she was with me. We never forget them. RIP beautiful Amy.
RIP in peace Amy. We miss our fur babies when they cross the Rainbow Bridge. Our special memories of them comfort us until we see them again. Heartfelt sympathy to you.
Thank you for the additional info on Zellda’s videos.
Dear Z Fans: Saw this on the Paulick Report today. It is bittersweet but good news of another filly.
“The first foal by The Lieutenant is a filly born Saturday, Feb. 1 at Keane Stud in Amenia, N.Y., for breeder Meadow Hill Lane Farm.
The Lieutenant was one of four stallions killed during a December raid on Haras Barlovento in Peru, where he had been standing the Southern Hemisphere season. His only crop of North American foals will be born in 2020.”
Such an awful tragedy. Praying and hoping there will be justice and no more reports of this happening again.
The Lieutenant was indeed gorgeous and such a tragedy to lose those horses to evil men. This little filly is lovely — Congrats to her beautiful mama, Keysong and to all connections. May she have a long happy healthy life filled with love.
Thank you for the news of The Lieutenant’s first foal, Carolina. All of his offspring will be even more treasured than usual because of his untimely end.
Thank you for the beautiful slide show, Judy.

Carolina

Dear Carolina:
How very, very sad. Wishing his little girl a long, happy, healthy life.
The Lieutenant was by Street Sense (Street Cry), so part of our beloved Z’s bloodline. RIP beautiful boy.
Here’s a stunningly beautiful slideshow of him from Bloodhorse. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Carolina and Judy,
The Lieutenant was indeed gorgeous and such a tragedy to lose those horses to evil men.
Hugs and Love
