Happy Mother’s Day!
Team Zenyatta headed to Lane’s End for the day and spent some time in the Kentucky rain with Momma Z and her colt. Z even gave some flowers to her human mom! We thought we would share a few of our Mother’s Day moments.
To all of the amazing mothers out there, all of the best to you and yours.

Hi Z Family I hope everyone has a really good day. I wanted to let you know that I heard from the Dr. Hansen again. This was a suprise. He is treating my class to Pizza and dessert. What a really nice man. I did not expect this. The children are THRILLED !!!!! Can you hear their voices ? I just get choked up with how generous the horse owners are. I know all on this site would be happy for the children. Sending my LOVE to ZENYATTA and BABY Z. Love, Shari XXXOOO
Rosemary McCauley - So. Cal.
What a great experience for you and the children. This is a very generous and thoughtful thing for him to do, but I have to say that I believe he is inspired by your obvious qualities as a teacher. Have a wonderful time with the children.
Shari Voltz\Ohio
Rosemary you are just so kind in your remarks. Thank you sweet lady : )
Sue Fredrick Co-P WI Chapt.
Shari,
How absolutely wonderful, I reiterate can I be in your class, ha,ha. Seriously, what a great guy he is and look at the advantage for your kids because you decided to teach outside the box. Bless your heart and Dr Hansen and the children too, hope you have a wonderful time. Hugs
Terry Crow GP
Ms. Voltz-Good to hear from you and I am especially pleased that Doctor Hansen did this. Even though he must have been disappointed at the Derby results, he found the time to give your class a treat. This does nothing but reflect well on him. I will be rooting hard for Hansen (the horse) to make a winning return to the races on the June 9 Belmont undercard.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dr. Hansen is a very nice man; and he really loves his horse and those who also do.
And what a wonderful deed to provide gifts to children to show and gain interest
in the younger generation for the future of racing. He is ODD, but a very generous
man.
Terry Crow GP
sign-A very fair description of him.
L♥VE - JAG aka Auntie Judy ♥ Southern, CA
I also understand that Dr. Hansen has always donated a portion of his winnings to a horse rescue organization. Granted, I didn’t hear it directly from the horses mouth, but my friend who told me knows of this organization – so I would take that as rock solid! Thanks Dr. Hansen – you’re not outrageous
as people would like to THINK! As I’ve said before, I can think of WORSE things that can be done to a horse than to paint its tail – just sayin! :-)
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Right you are, JAG! High hoof to Dr. Hansen!
Terry Crow GP
JAG-I don’t know why there was such a big deal made out of that. Even Hansen’s trainer was opposed.

Mrs. Voltz,
You deserve all the flowers in the world and lots of hugs for Mother’s Day! I hope you got them all because your children must look up to you as an amazing mother to them with all you do. I wish my teachers were half as dedicated as you are. Teachers like you that think outside the status-quo will save America and raise the next great generation to the place they deserve to be in.
Terry Crow GP
Pretty high praise, Ms. Volrz, from one who is still in the academic environment.

Here is an article about foal manners and how foals are discipline by their

Rearing and biting are playful; but only to a certain degree.

wait until the first time 12z tries to mount mama z…then you will see pinned ears, snapping teeth, hooves flying, and you might even hear some hellacious noises. i think mama z will have no problem telling 12z what is not acceptable…

So the Queen will soon be teaching the Prince not only what to do, but what not to do.

I really love this article because of the reasons that you mentioned; Zenny is primarily responsible for his good and bad behavior, of course with the help of
LANE’S END, WHO I AM SURE ARE GUIDING HER.
SHE SEEMS TO BE VERY TOLERANT, BUT MAYBE BECAUSE HE IS STILL YOUNG;
MAY HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL 4 MONTHS OR SO FOR HER TO “LAY DOWN
THE GAVEL” AND PIN EARS, BIT AND KICK THE LITTLE CUTIE.
I JUST LOVE HORSE BEHAVIOR, THEY SAY SO MUCH WITH THEIR EARS;
DID YOU SEE THE VIDEO OF LAVA MAN WHEN THAT LITTLE DISABLED GIRL WAS PLACED ON HIS BACK???? IT WAS TOO CUTE; BOTH HIS EARS WENT IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS AS IF TO SAY “WHAT IS THIS LITTLE THING ON MY BACK??” I’VE NEVER FELT ANYTHING LIKE THIS; AND THEN HE GOT USED TO IT AND HIS EARS PRICKED FORWARD.
nancy in nj
sign – love, love, love lava man. you are so right – he clearly was puzzled by the little “thing” on his back who just sat there. i think he probably doesn’t remember any time when he had someone on his back that was not there to actually ride him. lol. it was neat to see his reaction. he handled it just like the class act that he is.

Sign-Thanks for the various links provided. In the case of Doug O’Neill, nothing has been proven yet and it seems to me that the findings are being kept under wraps. Curley, Moe and Larry, the members of the CHRB, are hacks who can’t do anything right. Rick Arthur, the advising vet for them, falls into the same category.

Here is today’s horse joke. A devout cowboy lost his favorite Bible while he was repairing a corral. He looked high and low for it with no result. Finally, three weeks later a horse walked up to him carrying the Bible in its mouth. The cowboy couldn’t believe his good luck. He took the precious book out of the horse’s mouth and exclaimed “It’s a miracle!” “Not really,” said the horse, “your name is written inside the cover.”

Today’s redneck jokes-here are some especially for Brenda S and Abigail in Montreal, president and charter member, respectively, of our Canadian chapter. You might be a Canadian redneck if you have 10 recipes for preparing bottled Moose. For you Star Wars fans, You might be a Canadian redneck Jedi if Chewbacca is the leader of your dog sled team. You might be a Canadian redneck Jedi if you have ever eaten bottled Ewok. For the rest of the rednecks, you might be a redneck if you have a tattoo of your lawyer’s phone number. You might be a redneck if your lawn mower can break the sound barrier. You might be a redneck if your name your twin sons Jack and Daniel. You might be a redneck if your outhouse has a plunger. You might be a redneck if you re-use dental floss to save money. And, for all of you nurses out there who recently celebrated a day in your honor, you might be in a redneck hospital if the nurses wear flour sack uniforms.

I think you mean ME (LOL) – I realize that you have a stated problem with names, and I did actually think about adding “Sue” as a middle name to upgrade my redneck resume, but . . decided to stick with just Sandy. Anyhow, my friend couldn’t remember who gave her the T-shirt which caused me considerable angst when I really needed to find another one. I was the faculty “chair” when another officer (our entire philosophy department) was coming to the end of his term, and I had to come up with a present. Zenyatta, I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day. I would have gotten you and your foal something if only I knew the address to send it to. How is your foal? I hear that he’s sometimes a little rambunctious. I also hear that you’re in foal again. Congratulations! I can’t wait to see foal no. 2. I never heard about Tasty Temptation’s foal being born. How are they doing? When the new foal is born next year, I hope the current foal and the new one get along perfectly.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Tasty’s foal, a colt, was born several weeks ago. Unfortunately, Tasty did not take to motherhood, so the colt was placed with a mare whose foal had died.
Baby 12Z and next year’s foal are unlikely to meet except possibly as residents of the same barn. By the time the Tapit baby is born, Baby 12Z will be with his yearling herd. Later, he will be off to his initial training, probably in Florida.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Unfortunately 12 Zenyatta and hopeful 13 Zenyatta will never meet until possibly
12 Z is 5yo and 13 potential Z is 4yo and they run on the track against each other as older horses.
What an imagination, that is if 12 Z does not go to stud as a 3 year old;

I do hope it will remain a farm! Oh, please let it NOT be turned into a subdivision with those inevitable “McMansions” and those predictable shopping centers! YUCK!
It certainly should be preserved if for no other reason than an historic one — Big Red and Riva Ridge.
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
Yes, I agree. I think Diana S. said that Penny’s daughter was involved trying to save it. Is that right Diana? Please tell us the story there, as you heard it from her.
Diana Stuart - HAPPY BIRTHDAY TRINA!!!
Kate Tweedy said the land is zoned only for agricultural or open-space type uses, so there won’t be houses or anything. The most likely new buyers indicated they wanted to preserve the important parts of the farm in perpetuity. Let’s all hope this is true!
One interesting thing Kate mentioned in her talk was Secretariat’s condition when he stopped racing. She is convinced it led to the laminitis that killed him. Unlike many stallions today, he was not riden after his racing career stopped, and he got HUGE! She said 1900 pounds!

Judy-Thanks for the link. Too bad it was an off track for the Preakness in Riva’s year or there could have been two triple crown winners in a row. @Marshall-My post was not in response to yours so no apologies are due. My point was merely that if there had been no Riva Ridge, there might not have been a Secretariat..
Margaret I'm ECSTATIC!!!!!
Oh ick! You would NOT BELIEVE how gorgeous the house is. The head contractor took me on a tour of Meadow back in 2007. At the time Meadow was under huge renovations and the road was closed. There is a road marker out on the highway that I wanted a pic of. This man had sent everyone home because of forecasted rain. He spent two hours showing me EVERYTHING! He listened very graciously to my thoughts and ideas (which funny enough ran right along with everyone on the board–only I hadn’t talked to anyone), I got to see Secretariat’s foaling stall, his stall in the training barn as well as Riva’s. I even got to drive a lap of the training track!
The house is closed because of kids sticky fingers (sticky as in food and candy). Everything is wall to wall covered in magohony wood, floor to ceiling. From the outside you wouldn’t expect to see such beauty but what lies inside the brick home is truly breathtaking.
I don’t even know how I got so lucky that day–maybe fate. I was jut in the right place at the right time.
I don’t know about property values and taxes. What I do know is this–if horse lovers can unite, rescues unite for a place for horses this would be a great use. Meadow is a bit north of Richmond, a couple hours south of D.C..
Wonder if there is a way to temporarily halt this–to find people who want to donate monies to save Meadow much the way people donated funds to save Calumet’s trophies?
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
Oh wouldn’t that be great!? I wish I had money, there would never be another horse (or any animal) without a forever home! And I’d try to save all these richly historical places forever. I only hope that Penny Chenery and her family can be of help in this somehow. I am holding my breath that someone like the new people at Calumet will take it over. Too many of these historical farms have been lost forever over the ages – it is time that it is recognized as a travesty.

Judy Berube, I’m impressed; you are about as up to date on Rightful Image as we are. His last work was a good one. When Rod makes his monthly visit to El Monte this Friday he will once again highhoof it over to Santa Anita ( again without MOI, sigh, but no races there this time–watch him end up at Hollypark :-) ) and hope to have a brief chat with trainer Mike and give carrots to Rightful. The latter will no doubt be there; depending on the time of day, Mike may not be. Wouldn’t it be great if Rightful Image could be one of Terry Crow’s talking horses? Oh, the places we’d go, the sights we’d see, with apologies to Dr. Seuss. Well, as Bob Baffert and other trainers say, the horse will tell us when he’s ready.
Before I forget, I enjoyed the Afleet Alex stories.; the lemonade girl and all. I was AMAZED when he got up after going down like that. Talk about gasping, oh my!
And Terry Crow, “the Descarte before the horse,” hahahaha.
All: if I can remember to write about it next time, at work last week some nice (and amusing) references were said about my involvement in racing, to a largish (and captive) audience. It was unexpected and pleasant, something we all can use more of. High hoof!

hello all ! I just got back on Mon from my trip to Michigan and Lexington, Ky. Happy belated Mother’s Day to everyone and the new pics of Z and baby Z and the Mosses – ultra terrific!!
I started my Lexington time with a visit to Old Friends. It’s very easy to locate and the facility is so unpretentious. The office people were extremely friendly and the volunteer tour guide was knowledgeable and very nice. What a joy to see the final resting place of Noor and (I think) Skipaway. We got to give carrot treats to the horses as we toured.
I saw the Hall of champions show at the Kentucky Horse Park 3 times!! I couldn’t stay away from getting a chance to stand a few feet from Funny Cide and Cigar!!! I told both of them how incredibly handsome they are — they nodded in agreement. I also got close enough to FC’s ear (separated by a heavy metal gate) to tell him that I knew he tried SO hard in the Belmont and that as far as I was concerned, he was a true champion! I rubbed Cigar’s nose through the same heavy metal gate. – a one finger rub since the protective gate is. . .well. . .very protective. He seemed to be willing to stay and get nose rubs for some time!! Funny Cide and Cigar both did back rolls in the dirt as soon as they got out to their paddocks! Also it was good to see Da Hoss and Go For Gin!
I took an organized tour and got to see a broodmare barn with LOTS of new foals out of such horses as Lookin’ at Lucky, M. de Oro, Smart Strike, English Channel, and Hard Spun. One of the mares was out of AP Indy – I think her name was Indy Business. Such adorable foals, oh my gosh. We got to walk from stall to stall and see them with their “moms” — some sleeping, some rarin’ to go, a la Z baby!!
Finally I visited Claiborne Farms. I was stunned to be able to see Pulpit, Arch AND Blame up close AND get a chance to run my hand along their necks (invited to do so by the tour guide, as could anybody else!) Blame had the most incredible reddish hairs in his neck that gave the neck an extra bit of sheen. I told him I had did not hold it against him for winning the 2010 BC classic, broken-hearted as I was back then!!
And the equine cemetery at Claiborne – I mean, I knew Secretariat was there, and Swale, BUT I had no idea how many incredible horses are also buried there – Bold Ruler, Nasrullah (Nusrallah?) to name just a couple. Eddington is now in Secretariat’s stall.
Well, I bet you can’t tell that I had a fabulous time. the weather was gorgeous, the area around Lexington is stunning and I am blessed to have had the opportunities I did. And I wish y’all could have been there too!!! I’ve missed visiting the blog on a regular basis.

Sandy! yes, you must get yourself to bluegrass country – you’re quite close!! I lived 7 hours from Lexington for 30 years (Lansing, Michigan) and it wasn’t until I moved to Seattle in 2001 that I finally paid attention to TB racing. Now it takes me 3 days by train (I don’t fly!!)

Welcome baxk Sharon!
I’m so tickled that Cigar gave you the “rolling show” – sounds like he hasn’t lost a beat LOL I miss the Hall of Champions… maybe I will return one day soon.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful visit of the Blue Grass state! :-)

p.s. It was 7 years ago THIS WEEK I was in Lexington. I went to Keeneland to watch Giacomo on their big screen race in the Preakness :-(

and the “grunting” with the rolling show!!! same for Funny Cide – lots of grunting. It was so funny. I had never heard a horse make such noises!! : ) I couldn’t believe it when I found out that Man O War and War Admiral are both interred at Kentucky Horse Park. I spent a lot of time with my mouth wide open in amazement!
