Happy Friday!
We close off a quiet week with a few fun photos, courtesy of Alys. Zenyatta and her boys are delighting in the final days of spring. Break out the fly masks, here come the dog days of summer. As you can see, Coz has found a new way to keep himself entertained, it’s called a Jolly Ball. The farm likes to give them to horses that like to stay busy. Coz loves his!
Best of luck to all those participating in the Belmont Stakes. Have a great weekend.
Enjoy!

Thanks for keeping me updated you all. I found the article on POE on the Bloodhorse website. Had not looked at the computer until this afternoon. This just could be the sign that it is time for him to retire and pass on that amazing Big D bloodline.
Brenda S. Fort Erie, Canada
Another great horsey day for Vic and I today – Vic got to ride one of the new boarders in the barn – a 17.2 hands, 17 year old off track gelding, with Bold Ruler in his pedigree on the top and the bottom. He has a blaze that is very, very similar to Zenny’s but he is a bit lighter color than Zenny. His name is Seven and he did pretty well in his racing career and performed well as a hunter jumper in his off track life. Vic was in seventh heaven at the opportunity to ride an “almost Zenny look alike”. She worried that she wouldn’t be able to mount him and then that dismounting could be a problem but I assured her that if Mikey could get up and down on Zenny with her height she should have no problem. All went well and she was able to walk and trot him. He has a good disposition and seems to have a great sense of where the camera is so I was able to get some nice shots with ears pricked. He got several mints for being such a good boy.
Vic is thoroughly enjoying doing morning chores at her instructor’s barn, 11 horses and 2 ponies and I occasionally get to help with turning out and filling water barrels. My new accessories are straw and mud and my new fragrance is Eau de Equine.
Marty R / Colorado
What a great post, Brenda. Gave me a big smile. Hoof Ray for Vic being able to ride Seven. My favorite fragrance was always Eau de Equine.

Dear Max, Sheena, Peggy, Sally B, Sue Fredricks, Barb Wood and Z Fans:
Visited Charlie today at the farm. Angela and some of her boarders planned a horse show with events for children and adults. Hudson was in the show and was ridden by Katie. She was very well behaved and really seemed to enjoy it.
Hudson is shoeless at the moment because she would not let the farrier put shoes on her after she had thrown a couple of her shoes while running in the paddock. She was kicking him and would not stand still to have the nails tapped in place. Every time Katie visits HT, she picks up each of her feet and taps on them to try to get her to stand still so that shoes can be put on her. They tried glue ons, but HT would not stay still the necessary time for the glue to bond.
Hudson is one Independent (stinker) Thinker. Just gotta love her.
Charlie and Gigi were in the paddock and racing all around while the show was going on. Then Charlie came over to the fence near the ring and we could see his fly mask was loose and so were his bell boots. Angela went and got him and brought him into his stall. I had a nice visit with him and gave him some carrots, mints, Stud Muffins and a lot of kisses on his beautiful face.
It was a really fun day. The Cute Ribbon of the day went to three year old cowboy, Jason, who rode his Percheron (with the help of his Mom leading the horse in the ring). He came back from his event shouting loudly to everyone, “Did you see me”?
Too cute. Love and Hugs, JB
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Judy B, Sounds like the whole day was wonderful for everyone except the farrier since he tried everything to get those shoes on Hudson and could not! ha
Everytime you come home from visiting with Charlie and just being “there” I bet you feel like a new person….uplifted!!
What are bell boots?
hugs, Sally B

Dear Sally B.:
You are so right. That weekly visit is something I really look forward to. I bet you feel the same way when you get home from a day at the rescue. So wonderful what you do.
I have enclosed a photo of bell boots. Charlie’s legs are so long, he was clipping himself just above the hoof area (near the pastern). When he runs like a wild man, his back hooves clip his front ones and he gashed himself one time pretty bad. The boots we use are lined with fleece and fasten with Velcro. We buy them on line. They have done the trick and he hasn’t had a problem since he’s been wearing them. Love and Hugs, JB

Another good article about the Triple Crown races this year, and what the connections of Orb, Oxbow and Palace Malice have all done for the sport of horse racing:

Dear Vicki B.:
Great article. Love Mikey’s smile. Thanks for sharing. Hugs, JB

Interesting article. I have a slightly different take on the TC results this year. When you analyze the results and the times of the races, one could conclude that this was a very ordinary crop of three year olds. The last quarter of the Belmont was run in over 27 seconds, harness horse time, and was won by a horse who had previously won only one race.
SharonAtlanta
I agree, Terry. We all so hope for a TC winner and Orb showed well in the Derby. This year we have 3 different winners of these races with Orb being beaten twice by Oxbox. I was really curious to see how Palace Malice would run without blinkers and if he would rate better than he did in the Derby. Well, by golly, he did. To me, it’s a testament to his endurance. Sigh, maybe next year.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
I agree with you totally. They all were pretty much equals; Orb, Oxbow and Palace Malice. Each of them, I thought, gave their all in the TC races. Hugs, JB
DebraZ
Do you think the requirement to earn enough points by winning big races in order for a horse to enter the Derby had any impact the Triple Crown?
Terry Crow
Yes, i do. I preferred the added money winnings requirement. The points assigned to each race was strictly politics by Churchill Downs. For instance, no points for the Illinois Derby winner? This was petty on the part of Churchill Downs. One of their partner tracks is Arlington, who has a feud going with the track that hosted that race. Also, it virtually eliminated fillies from the Derby.
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Go figure Terry? I guess that is the separation from the great winners of the Triple Crown along with Zenyatta in her remarkable races!! Secretariat and others just did it; It has been 25 years or so? What was different that they did with those former horses that separates them from all these possible triple crown winners now?
I just know that our Zenyatta will always be considered one of the greatest racing mares of our time!
hugs, Sally B
carol in arkansas
Last yr only one horse ran all three triple crown races….Optimizer….this yr we have 3…
Orb…Oxbow…Will Take Charge…all 4 of these guys are planning their next race..this gives me some hope that strength and endurance may be improving …I know …small sample but one can hope ….
…..
Also interesting is that Mr Lucas trains 2 of this yrs three….some critics say they run too often….others applaud the “old school” idea that they get races not works…hmmmmm

Thanks for the great article Vicki. Nice to see the comparison with the 2007 trio of winners. What do folks think about this comment in the article re horse racing?:
“The industry is desperately trying not to be written off as an old and dying sport for old and dying fans”.
Terry Crow
The former president of the California Horse Racing Board referred to the average age of fans who actually went to the track as deceased. Maybe somebody just forgot to tell me, but I think I am still very much alive. However, there is no doubt that newer, younger race fans need to be cultivated.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
Love your post. I am in the same group as you (deceased). Ha, ha.
There is definitely a need for more young people who love horses to become interested in the sport. Hugs, JB
Louise Castello
Sadly, getting young people interested is tough. I have daughters in their 20’s and 30’s that I have to defend myself to because I love horse racing. Because of the rise of animal activism and the breakdowns and drug problems, young people hate it. If racing cleans up its act, maybe they would be more interested. It’s sad, but I believe some changes really have to happen to get young people back. My girls love horses, they just don’t like what the business does to them.
Terry Crow
Judy-Younger fans should be encouraged to attend the races. However, the more I think about it, how about giving the old, loyal fans a break? Reduced parking, admission and program, not to mention the racing form, would be much appreciated. In Las Vegas, it cost nothing to get into a race book or to park. The casino gives out food comps and forms are free. Is anybody listening?
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Oh dear – I guess they weren’t happy to get ME then :-) I like your idea about breaks for us old codgers Terry (especially the parking part – more spaces somewhere in the same county as the track would be nice – especially at Santa Anita).
Terry Crow
Sandy-Any track should be eager for your business. There is a quarter horse track about 25 miles from Santa Anita named Los Alamitos where I go to make my bets. Parking is free and admission is $2.00 for seniors. And, you don’t need a shuttle to get to the main gate. Racing has taken its fans for granted for so long it might be too late for them to change. Every time Santa Anita hires a guy who has some good ideas for the fans, they fire him.

Breeders’ Cup to Santa Anita in 2014
By Ron Mitchell The Blood-Horse Monday, June 10, 2013 10:36 AM
For an unprecedented three years in a row, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships will be returning to Santa Anita Park in 2014, according to an announcement by Breeders’ Cup officials June 10. The dates will be Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 2014
The World Championships drew 89,742 to the Arcadia, Calif., track in 2012, with total wagering of $148 million, and the event is scheduled to be held at Santa Anita for the seventh time this Nov. 1-2.
“Santa Anita has proven to be an outstanding host for our championships, providing horsemen and fans around the world with a first-class facility and one of the greatest experiences in sports,” said Breeders’ Cup President Craig Fravel in a release. “We are delighted to extend our partnership with Santa Anita for a third consecutive year.”
“We also value our relationship with the Southern California business and entertainment community, who have demonstrated long time dedication and support of the Breeders’ Cup since our inception in 1984,” Fravel said.
The 2014 running of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships will mark the 11th time the event will be held in Southern California.
In the release, Breeders’ Cup officials indicated no decisions have been made on host sites beyond 2014.

Terry Crow
Seems like a strange decision to me. As much as I enjoy having the Breeder’s Cup in my own back yard, I would think that, if indeed the event is supposed to rotate among various tracks, that 2014 should be held at another venue. There was a problem with this a few years back when Oak Tree Racing Association, which used to control the dates in question, were denied the use of Santa Anita to conduct its racing dates. This was obviously a power play by Frank Stronach, the owner of Santa Anita, because he wanted to control those dates and host the Breeder’s Cup himself under the auspices of Santa Anita. The Breeder’s Cup was ready to sign a contract with Oak Tree for the Breeder’s Cup to be held every year during the time period allocated. When the problem about the use of the track during the dates in question came up, the Breeder’s Cup people backed off. Having been denied the use of the track for its dates, Oak Tree conducted its meeting at Hollywood Park for one year and then folded, conceding its racing dates to Santa Anita. Oak Tree Racing Association was a wonderful organization who contributed its profits to charity. The same cannot be said for Mr.Stronach. Sad. I get mad just thinking about it. Stronach should be chastised, not rewarded. With Hollywood Park closing its doors at the end of the year, he is by far the biggest player in Southern California racing.

NBC’s coverage of the Belmont was pretty pathetic. I miss Jim McKay. He had racing in his heart and soul. Belmont looks so impressive. Why don’t they have the Breeders Cup there? Has it been back there since Tiznow won for America?
Ann NC (Power Up POE)
Jim McKay was great and has a race named after him. I miss him too.
Terry Crow
Agree. Jim McKay was a class act. When ABC hosted the race, even Howard Cosell was not as obnoxious as usual. I like Bob Costas, but he does not make up for everyone else. As far as Belmont hosting the Breeders Cup, I also agree with your general sentiments and commented on it above.
Louise Castello
He was a class act. I will always remember him most at the Munich Summer Olympics massacre! He was so good then and every time I hear his voice, it brings it all back. He was great.

You guys will probably think I am terrible, but I used to turn Wide World of Sports on at the beginning so I could laugh at the guy who epitomized the agony of defeat. When ABC had a reunion 25 years after the fact, the ski jumper said that was the first time he had seen the tape. It was only funny because the guy walked away from it without a scratch.

TC, my brother and I were also terrible. That was quite the sight and we always planted ourselves in front of the tube to get ready for Wide World of Sports. Each time we saw the ski jumper,we moaned and thought unbelievable!
Jim McKay was instrumental in creating the Maryland Million Race Day, a day to showcase MD racing, he tried his best to keep the sport alive. A class act for sure. The race in his honor was a turf race.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Absolutely adored Jim Mc Kay. He will always be in my heart.
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Perhaps over time Bob Costas will become a match to Jim McKay. Something is missing though. Jim Mc Kay was awesome!!

Dear Vicki, Ann and TC:
Always enjoyed JM’s commentary. Think he truly love horses and the sport of racing. That came across very well. Hugs, JB
Especially Horses / So Cal
Greatly miss JM.
Going forward they should replace Costas’ with Laffit Pincay. Leave Costas’ to do the other NBC sports coverage, but for Horse Racing, Laffit can handle it on his own, he doesn’t need Costas.
Terry Crow
That is probably true. They should leave Costas to do the interviews after the race, although generally I do like him.
shirleeinindy
Vicki, I agree about the TV coverage. It wasn’t too bad on NBCSports but after that it was downhill. Need to see the horses and the jocks not some woman who doesn’t know jack about racing. More Donna Brothers and women like her. Poor Jerry Bailey looks bored out of his mind.

Dear Shirlee:
Love you post about deceased fans. Ha, ha. Hugs, JB

Dear Shirlee,
I agree that the coverage of the Triple Crown races could have been better. I suppose Ms. Beadle was there to draw in new viewers, but I don’t think she added very much other than silliness. Yes, more people like Donna Brothers and others who actually have knowledge of horseracing would be huge assets. Maybe they have learned something from this; after all, they went back to “New York, New York” last year after trying “Empire State of mind” (?) two years ago. I think that was aimed at drawing in young audiences, but it certainly bombed, IMHO. This from someone who remembers “East side, West side” before “New York, New York”!
I enjoy your posts, Shirlee. Take care and Cheers

Just had a brief e-mail conversation with a fellow Dumpling about the Clydesdales, which jogged my memory of my promise to post what we learned at Warm Springs Ranch in Columbia, MO. Hope my notes are correect. Had to remember it all and write it down later. Apologies to those not interested–just skip.
The stallions who pull the wagons are geldings about 5 years. old or so at the start of their service. They must be bays, with black manes and tails, 4 white socks, and a white blaze. At the time of retirement they are adopted out or sent to the national Clydesdale auction. (Don’t know anything about that–hope it’s ok). The broodmares stay for life. The biggest horses are the wheel horses nearest the wagon. Those in front of them are the body horses. The swing horses are ahead of them. They do the maneuvering. Those in the lead are of course called lead horses. They have to be fearless and practically bombproof. They can be 18 hands high and weigh 2000-2300 lbs. They remain unshod in the pasture but wear shoes to travel, pull the wagons, etc. Their shoes are padded with leather, which they have found to work better than neoprene. The nails that hold them on ar very long, and they havea lip in front of the shoe to hold the hoof in place. The shoes are very big and heavy.
Each harness weighs 130 lbs. The reins alone are 75 lbs. There have to be two men to drive, as it becomes tiring.
When on the road, they can only travel a certain number of miles per day and they must stop every 2 hours for rest. The trucks (huge) are not airconditioned or heated, as there might be too big a temperature change when they reach their destination. They are ventilated, however. They do layovers at farms with whom they have made prior arrangements. There is a team in the northeast, the one in MO, and one in the west. (Can’t remember if there is a 4th)
There are 101 horses on the farm with 40 babies being born each year. They have no vet in residence, as their workers know pretty much everything, and the U. Of Missouri is right there if there is an emergency.
They travel with a separate truck just for the equipment. It takes at least 5 hours for each hitch setup.
The babies are sheared shortly after birth, because their warm, fuzzy coats are too heavy for our American climate (They originated near the River Clyde in Scotland). If not sheared, their body temperatures would escalate alarmingly.
Life expectancy is about 20 years.
The pregnant mares are monitored by the farm manager by marecams with alarms attached to the mares that will go off when they are about to deliver.
That’s about it. I think you would enjoy a trip there. Love to all.

Great info, Barbara. I was reminded of the fact that the Clydesdales used to pull the starting gate at Santa Anita and had stalls in front of the stands so that the fans could see them. I don’t know why they no longer perform that function. I say reminded because one of my favorite old shows, Highway to Heaven, just had a re-run of an episode in which a group went to Santa Anita and, sure enough, the big guys were pulling the gate. For some reason, the Clydesdales were also headquartered at Sea World here near San Diego about 15 years ago and the horses would be hitched up and took a tour of the grounds every two hours or so.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Would love to have seen them there!

Thanks for sharing that info. Lucky you. I always loved seeing the Clydesdales (on TV and videos) never have seen them in “person”.

Thanks,Barbara.
Great info. My Dad and I came across them by luck one day, they were giving a show at my college. It was a great Daddy/daughter experience to stumble upon.
Glad you were able to see the farm!!

Dear Barbara, I just loved reading your post! The Clydesdale is another very special favorite of mine. I stopped for a tour of the Budweiser Clydesdales in St. Louis about 12 years ago. I remember watching one outside having a bath and a man was on a 6ft. ladder to reach the horses upper body and head. Their stalls were impeccable, I think I could have a picnic lunch in the stall!
Then the Budweiser hitch came to good ol Washington County Fair grounds just four years ago. My BFF and her husband had come down. Off Sue & I went to see these big beautiful creatures. We hung around. Grooming began as getting ready for a departure.
We were so lucky to be right next to this one big boy. (All are males in the hitch I learned). I gave him a kiss!! This breed is truly a gentle giant don’t you think?
I have learned more now. Thanks Barbara!
hugz, Sally B

Diana Stuart - Where's My Clyde?
Dear Barbara:
I’m still waiting for the FedEX crate with my baby Clydesdale in it. You promised – – – .
Thank you for this great post. Can’t wait to see pictures! I am also happy you cleared up part of a question many of us in rescue had – what happens upon retirement from the hitch, and what happens to the mares. Clydes are very valuable horses and I have always figured that Budweiser et al would never allow the PR nightmare that would come if any of the Budweiser horses went to an unsavory auction somewhere.

dear judy loved your post about visiting Charlie and the girls.was interested in your discussion about getting youngsters interested in racing we get family days at some racecourses over here and there will be lots of fashionable “young things” in ascot next week of course the recent scandals haven’t helped us either!have a peaceful night full of sweet dreams God bless love and hugs sheena

Dear Sheena,
Could you tell us what time the Queen Ann Stakes will be. I’m trying to figure out what time it will be here.
I’ve got Japan racing figured out so now I just need to know the Ascot time.
You know Sheena something I really wish is that Orfevre would come here to race also. I guess that’s just an unrealistic dream as he doesn’t have too much else to prove except for I know they so want him to win the Arc. I remember seeing him win the Japan Triple Crown. What a horse….Just reminds me of some of the Old Champions of the past.
Just love him dearly.
Didn’t someone on here compare him to the look of Whirlaway?
If he came over here, I’ld just have to drop everything and go see him. No mater where it was.
Peggy (N) South Georgia, "Power Up" Point of Entry
Just Googled Whirlaway, Oh Dear Lord, He and Orfevre do look a lot alike.
Whirlaway l941 just beautiful in the winning Photo, Oh my goodness he’s just beautiful.
Peggy (N) South Georgia, "Power Up" Point of Entry
Everybody they brought him back to Calumet to bury him. This just makes me so happy.

I hope you get your wish and some day “O” does race in America. Love and Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia, "Power Up" Point of Entry
Judy it would just be a dream come true.
When you have time go in and google Whirlaway. I’ve been reading about him.. Just have fallen in love with him too. He died the year I was born in l953. He died in I believe April of that year. You could just loose your mind with these beautiful horses.
My heart just sank when I read he went to France and died there, But he was brought back home. He reminds me so much of Orfevre.
I want to go to Calumet to visit his grave.

Dear Peggy:
Whirlaway ran at our local track, Narragansett Park, in 1942; one year before I was born. Glad he is buried here at home. He was our fifth Triple Crown Winner (1941). Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Sheena:
So glad you enjoyed the post about the horse show and visiting Charlie.
Yes, Ascot will have everyone turned out dressed beautifully and oh, those hats. It’s like Derby Day in Kentucky. Love and Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
When Whirlaway won the triple crown, the Preakness was run one week after the Derby. Always been a favorite of mine. When I first learned about him, I thought he was still buried in the French graveyard near Normandy. IT is an old story by now as I have posted it before, but he was already at Santa Anita in 1941 preparing for the upcoming campaign when Pearl Harbor happened.

O K, I’ve got questions tonight. Sorry
Has anyone in the past few years seen the Lippazon Stallions show. I have been getting emails at the first of the year about there tour dates. They have been in Jacksonville, Tallahassee all round here. Are the shows I wonder as good as you use to hear about.
I remember hearing about them lots when I was little, oh my many years ago. I would like to go see them too. I think I’m being nastalgic tonignt.
Peggy (N) South Georgia, "Power Up" Point of Entry
One note, I think my email spelled the Lippazon a little differently, but the stallions looked the same in the picture that came through. Just Gorgeous.

Peggy (N) Whether being nostalgic or not, I would not think you would ever be disappointed.

Dear Max, Ann, Sheena, Peggy, Sally B and Z Fans:
In an earlier post I incorrectly said that our little three year old cowboy Jason rode his Percheron in the show yesterday. In fact, after sending his photo to our wonderful Sharon in Atlanta, she pointed out to me that the horse Jason is riding is a Belgian. She is correct. I mixed up Rex, Jason’s Belgian with Sir Lancelot, who is a grey Percheron. Lance was not in the show yesterday. Sorry for the mistake. Love and Hugs, JB
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Whether a Pecheron or a Belgium they are both big beautiful horses. How great you can see them and a young boy such as Jason can ride one!

To all; A wife & friend of ours (her husband a long time college friend of my husband) has lost her fight against cancer. She passed away this morning. Her name was Lori. She was a fighter. She had cancer off and on for many years. This time they unfortunately could not do anything more. Please say a prayer for Lori to be at peace and in Gods hands. Thank you, hugs, Sally B
