Happy Wednesday!
Last week was a special one for the web team. We packed our cameras and muck boots and headed to Lane’s End to catch up with Zenyatta and her boys.
We roamed around the paddock with Zenny and 13Z (with pockets full of peppermints), spent a day with Coz to observe his new routine, and took a lot of photos. In the coming weeks we’ll put up photo galleries and add new prints to the Zenyatta Shop. Also in the works is a video interview with Assistant Yearling Manager Cooper Sawyer—he’ll explain how Coz is being prepped for the next stage in his career.
Since it’s that time of year where we begin to make plans for the Breeders’ Cup, we’d like to announce that there will not be an official Zenyatta Celebration at the Breeders’ Cup this year. Instead, we’ll hold a special event online that everyone can take part in, from the races or from home. Details will be announced at a later date.
Enjoy!

Bluegrass Girl, Thank you for the news about Paynter. Do we know who is going to ride? Will pray for a safe trip for him.
Lea, one of my favorites, is going against Wise Dan in the Fourstardave. He is a beautiful horse but lost to Dan last time. Just hope for a safe trip for both.
And of course, my beloved Muchie is going in the Whitney.

@Pam Homeier-I am sorry I missed your comment on a previous page about horses who act up in the starting gate. The horse you are referring to in Zenyatta’s BC race was Quality Road, When horses act up in that manner, they are placed on a starter’s list and, if they act up again , are sometimes returned to starting school. If the problem persists, they can indeed be ruled off the track. It does not matter who the trainer is. Such horses are a danger to all. You ask good questions about racing and it is a pleasure to respond to you.
pam homeier
Thank you Terry Crow for all your info. I have learned so much from you and others on this blog. Living in the middle of Kansas all my life my horse racing knowledge comes from the coverage of select horse races on tv. I love Zenyatta and I have learned tons from her support group and all you guys. Thank you all for taking time to kindly reply to all questions.
Terry Crow
I lived in Kansas for awhile and used to love to visit all of the historical places there. I especially enjoyed visiting the Woodlands, which had both horse and dog racing and was a great facility. Unfortunately, the state would not allow them to have slot machines there, even though some Indian reservations already had them and the state of Missouri, just a few miles away, also had full-blown gambling, which forced the Woodlands to shut down.. Kind of sounds like California.
pam homeier
Went to Woodlands once to watch dog races. Very nice place. Kansas has been relenting a little. We have two new casinos, one by Dodge City and another south of Wichita. Both do very well. Dog track at Wichita also went under because of the no slots rule.
Terry Crow
The dog track at Wichita is gone? It used to be one of the top ones in the country. Bummer. I believe Fort Learned, the horse, is named after the Fort :Learned that is near Pawnee Rock.
pam homeier
That would be Fort Larned.

Kathy R thank you so much for the information about Scenic Blast. I fell in love with him when he was in Ca. Photos of Hovis reminded me of him for some reason. Such wonderful, expressive faces. Karen Thompson I do love Hovis.
Steve Haskins is a brilliant writer and a truth teller. There aren’t that many journalists in any sports reporting that are really willing to face and tell the truth.
Pati I hope over the coming years you will be able to share some of the exciting things you experience. You are one special girl.
Dearest Zen, Coz and little Red you make my life a lot brighter everyday. Pure Love.
Pati-College Girl
I will. :-)

Dear vicki: Delighted to help regarding Scenic Blast – he is one of my favourites and I was very sad when he left the country firstly for England, but then (as it seemed) to go permanently to the USA with John. So I’m really happy to have him back home and safe in retirement. Cheers, KathyR.
Nancy Stamp
Terry, on that race Zenyatta did not want to go in the gate either the first time. After the long delay they had to redo every horse. She went in ok the second time. It really is nerve-wracking to watch the long delays for the good horses that load first. Racing is a difficult sport for the tender hearted. I enjoy the replays if all was good. I could never be a trainer or owner!
Terry Crow
Nancy–You should post more often. You always have good and valid points to make.
pam homeier
Nancy, I feel the same way. I could never own a race horse. I would be a basket case until the race was over and my horse was back in his stall safe and sound! I didn’t even do well when we were showing our German Shorthair at dog shows!!! Some judges have no idea what they are looking at! lol
Terry Crow
I used to really enjoy talking to basset hound owners at shows. I loved Joe Garigiola’s comment about them. He said they always looked like the IRS was after them. That may apply even more so today.
pam homeier
I love Basset Hounds. I teach puppy kindergarten at our local kennel club and from time to time we get a basset puppy. Those ears are so cute! They were always stepping on their own ears!
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Terry Crow,
Thanks for the mention of Joe Garagiola — I always enjoyed his commentary when he co-hosted/assisted at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show! Such a likable guy and a dog lover, too. David Frye and Joe were a good team.
Cheers and Hugs
Terry Crow
Anyone who likes basset hounds is aces with me. I miss my corrie terribly. I also recall her tripping over her ears when she was a puppy. Joe was a good commentator. Approached it from the angle that he knew nothing, but he really did. Pretty good ballplayer, too.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
And we all remember the noisy helicopter that was kicking up dirt and wind right above their heads. I wanted to yell, “Back off!”
suew/Va
Interesting comments about the starting gate. I recall an interview in which Mike suspected Zenny was slow out of the gate because she was sqeezed by other horses coming out in earlier races. Lucky for us she had a warrior’s attitude and tons of talent to be an excellent closer. Somehow she knew, even when she was several lenghts behind, that her tremendous stride and heart could get the job done. How I love looking at her races even today!

OK, I know this is somewhat off the topics usually discussed here, but a friend and I were talking about this recently. Does anybody remember that when cable TV first started the big selling point was the lack of commercials?

Russ and I use to talk about that all the time. As the years went by, the commercials just multiplied and the cable fees increased. Even when you know, you never know. Hugs, JB

Dear Max and Judy We all seem to love his name over here.George was a big favourite in the betting Louis is of course after Lord Mountbatten who was murdered by the IRA in 1979. Some were surprised he didn’t get 4 names which is the norm when you are so close to the throne but the Her Majesty only has 3 and her sister was only known as Margaret Rose.Of course when the Queen was born her uncle was the heir to the throne and she was never expected to rule until the abdication.Kate and William are a modern family .They are like a breath of fresh air Thought it was lovely he spent all the time in hospital with Kate.A very “modern man”!! hugs Sheena

Dear Max:
I’m really messing this up. Prince Charles is the new Prince’s Grandfather; Prince Philip is his Great Grandfather and as you said that makes King George VI his Great Great Grandfather. Dear Sheena: George is a great name for the little bloke. Did you know that Australia’s gift to Prince George will be bilbies? I believe they won’t go to the UK but remain at Taronga Park Zoo – bilbies are in the bandicoot family, highly endangered and very, very, cute. I think we gave Tasmanian Devils to Crown Princess Mary of Denmark (who is Tasmanian born). Hugs, Kathy R.
PS: In the comment below on the choice of First Dad, Neil Werrett mentioned that if they had decided to sell the foal, they’d probably have gone to Frankel.

Dear Terry: Very true – but they will keep the croc in Australia, rather than send him to the palace. Cheers, KathyR.

KathyR. This Australian idea of giving impressive gifts to Bruce and at the same time keeping them in Australia is a good one. This method could catch on in a big way. I must rush out and get a gift for Bruce and keep it for him. I wonder how he likes duct tape?

Dear Z Fans:
An explanation from Trainer Thacker on why he had Monzante euthanized. I believe this horse should have been retired and not brought back to race in a $4,000 Claiming race. The trainer acknowledges in the article that the horse was given Bute. That med can mask pain and a horse with an issue will run hard anyway.
Racing is a risk and this could have been just an unfortunate incident that might have happened to a young, healthy horse; but I believe this boy should have been retired and put up for adoption to a good home last year. He deserved that, as they all do. Love and Hugs, JB

Judy,
I don’t buy this bull—-!! I think he is trying to act concerned because there has been such a backlash. It has gone viral on the internet and is being investigated. He didn’t have to run this horse and the vets said Monsante was salvageable. Of course someone like him would never pay the money to save him. Scumbag. hugs
Louise Castello
Agreed! He disgusts me. However, I also think the people who made $500,000 off of him should have made a plan for his retirement. He never should have ended up with Thacker. What a slimeball!
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Louise:
Mr. Thacker acquired Monzante in a Claiming race on May 5, 2012 for $10,000.00. He raced Monzante 9 times. He won twice and ran third three times for him, earning purse money totaling $31,330.00. The beautiful boy earned his keep. Hugs, JB

This is a great article and wonderful ideas. I so hope this can come to pass. It’s so important if racing wants to keep their fans and get new ones. I know it’s cliché, but times are changing. They better listen.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Ann:
This article touches on the very truth that breeders, owners and trainers of all horses, Low Level Claimers or Stakes Runners, should be responsible to ensure their care during their racing careers and for their retirement. The Industry has to make it mandatory that Breeders, Owners or Trainers look for permanent homes for these horses when they are no longer competitive runners. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Ann,
Thanks for this link — excellent article. It makes some very viable points about funding retirement for these lovely creatures. They deserve no less.

Delrene in Carlsbad, Ca
Dear Zenyatta and babies and all Z’sters and posters. I did not attach it but it is easy to find by Google or Bloodhorse – the 2008 race of his life by Monzante at Del Mar – The Eddie Read. Although I cried through the whole video, knowing the sad outcome of his life less than 5 years later, even made more poignant , as it was the anniversary of his win when he died, in a strange way watching his 2008 win helped me. He is breathtaking and he’s a “come from behind” style of a horse we all love and visit everyday on this blog. Rafael Bejarano rode him. An interesting running mate, dear Lava Man – who came in last. Don’t know if this was before or after his stem cell treatment. But Monzante, Rest in Peace beautiful boy and please know your unkind end by those who mistreated you hopefully will haunt them forever and they will suffer for it. I will remember him from his triumph and try in my small way to make it right for so many others that might right now be in harms way.
Zenyatta , more and more each day I realize how wonderful and caring your connections were to keep you safe and healthy and happy.
Maybe all this emotion comes from being present at this current Eddie Read handicap, enjoying the day, the company and the beauty of all the horses and Del Mar and cheering the wonderful Jeranimo and others and then the crushing reality of what can happen to a beautiful animal who suffers at the hands of his uncaring connections.
I hope you can watch the wonderful 2008 replay.

Black Caviar news:
Have just heard a chat with Neil Werrett (co-owner of Nelly) and Sean Cosgrove on Skysportsradio. Neil said the connections will keep the foal, and are hopeful of continuing the dream with him/her. He said they’d be thrilled to just get a Group 1 with the foal. The choice of Exceed and Excel came about because he ticked all the boxes, including being a proven sire in both hemispheres. Sean asked if they had any left field possibilities and Neil said Not A Single Doubt was on the list, and may be considered for next year. He also said that if they had intended to sell the foal, they would probably have gone to Frankel.

I hope no one takes offense of this, but there is a stallion on another site that I watch, and he is quite a character and very smart; his name is Tiznow, He is always looking out his stall for attention and mints. When he first got to the farm, they tried to ride him, but he would just lay down, to get them off, so they just hand walk him. In the old barn, he learned to take the pin out of the gate to his stall, and got out, but he can’t reach it in the new stall. I have seen him checking out the gate, and even taking all the hay away from the gate, to see if there is someway to get it open from the bottom. He loves visitors, and is very smart, with a strong personality, I saw a documentary on him; what a great race horse, but with a mind of his own. One reason I mentioned him, was with some of the similarities between him and Zenyatta, it would be interesting to see what kind of offspring they would have, The only problem is, he is huge, and so is she; any offspring might not fit in the gate. She is the only girl to win the Breeder’s Cup Classic, and he is the only horse to win it twice. She showed so much heart in the 2010, and he gutted out in both of his. Anything from them would be smart, courages, and have a strong personality, with the love of attention and people. Too bad, probably an individual from them, would also be toooo bigg!!!! I don’t know about the compatibility of their families. Sorry so long again!! Hope no one takes offense. Hugs to all!!

Roberta,
I follow the site and enjoy watching Tiznow, he is such a character and he knows he is special. When asked who the smartest horse is, Tiznow, as well ornery, will bite if you do not pay attention. One groom said he is too intelligent for his own good sometimes.
He is described as a “California boy” Snow and cold weather he does not like.
When it is winter he is the first at his paddock gate to come in. During the summer and warm weather, they have to use a couple of grooms to get him in.
Love, Love Tiznow. He has my number One on my standing stallions list since A. P. Indy was pensioned.

Tiznow always seem to peak at the right time. If you watch the videos of his BC wins, you will see how competitve he was.
